  1. This reminds me of the time I went around looking for a 2 GB chip to replace te 32 MB one that came with my phone. Imagine being able to walk into your local hospital and walk out with a memory slot on the side of your head. Okay, so that one's a joke for now, but the possibility of implanting a chip into the brain has a huge number of possibiliies. Here's some I can think up of:1. All purpose communication device: chip embedded in the brain that draws energy from the brain, and is a radio transmitting device that works just like one's handheld phone. Unlike a phone however, there'd be no need to hold a device against your ear, but simply think (thus activating) of taking the call and letting the chip/s interact with the brain directly to pass on the interpreted radio signals to 'sound' that the brain understands and 'voice' as the brain transmits as part of the communication. This would be something of an 'always on' system that would allow for a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) worldwide connection, and would supply a list of friends, families and acquaintances for anyone with an implant to simply think of speaking with and instantly (through tha P2P network - bouncing the signal from one head to the next) be able to connect and communicate with the person called - should the person select to receive the call. World-wide-communication for free. This system would however be able to conventionally connect to the land and mobile network, through sattelite uplink. (All this assuming that we're able to sort out terabit wireless data transfer since the brain would be able to communicate with another brain directly, much faster without the need for human to human interface modules like speaking and hearing physically). As an all purpose communicaition device, the chip would also be capable of complete desktop capabilities, and be able to compose text and image based documents and presentations and be able to access the web (either through the free P2P system or through a worldwide ISP).2. The next step would be to upgrade the chip to be able to receive A/V sattelite feeds - in effect, being able to receive TV and radio - directly into your head. Of course, it would also mean that one'd go in for something like this as long as one had the ability to switch between channels and have the ability to switch off at will. There of course would be some potential negatives to consider, like a third party taking over the chip through radio and causing mis-information to be fed. And, since the brain is directly linked to the chip, the very scairy possibility of having someone take over the subject's brain completely (like as in research being done with mice <direction and movement control>).Most interesting and has immense future potential. Can't wait to read about more research in this direction.
  2. What I find really great about Google is that its always undergoing constant innovation. And, although everything is adsupported, the advertising is unobtrusive and it really works for the end user - by offering choices in whicherver arena or vertical a search/ other operation is being carried out.Google' suggest is a natural extension to the text based advertising I believe. Since the technology already existed with Google to bring in advertising that is iline with a user's search, the same technology may be extended to non advertising suggestions (similar search parameters). Overall, something that will enhance a user's search experience.
  3. Of all the renuable forms of energy, solar energy seems to be one of the best bets for the near and distant future. Primarily, because the sun puts out a great deal of energy through fusion and is distant enough not to immediately pollute the planet. On another front, it's going to be there for a great deal of time - something that is really worth investing time and money into.Other than this, as far as earth resources are concerned, we could always look at resources like wave action (since we can assume that the moon is going to be around for a while). Solar-power tech should really be invested into, especially for vehicular transport as well as heat requiring industry. As soon as something that's viable for industry to adopt on a grand scale, I'm pretty sure we would be able to look out for clearer skys and cleaner air to breathe.
  4. hey.. this should be interesting. I really must give it a shot and see if it works out... sure would do good to hava an extra mailing address with my given name to keep as a standby.
  5. I'd definately go with AVG Free Edition. I've been using it for the last 3 years and it's given me extremely good service. The updates are regular and the client check for urgent updates at every start-up. It also integrates very well into the major e-mail software checking for viruses while sending as well as receiving mails. Club this with a great firewall like ZoneAlarm and you're on your way to maintaining a high degree of vigilance over your system. Of course, it's always advisable not to go about installing every piece of software you come across on the internet, since there's a massive amount of freeware that also installs malware; stuff that passes along usage and sometimes even password and CC information to IRC servers.
  6. This is a really good idea, but there is a slight drawback. The cost in terms of energy required to seperate the hydrogen from H2O is pretty large and there is considerable wastage. Also, the amount of energy generated is usually not enough to maintain a self sustaining cycle, with an overflow of electricity.Ultimately, when we can reduce wastage of energy in production as well as in the seeration of Hydrogen from water, we should see hydrogen fuel cell applications appear in all our daily like gadgets and lifestyle usage. Really looking forward to that day.
  7. I'm using Hutch GPRS through a Sony Ericsson s700i via bluetooth and the performance is pitiful. It's so bad that I've given up accesing the net through the handset and use my Reliance CDMA (114KBPS out of which I get about 90 KBPS and about 40 KBPS during peak hours). I'm on a fixed monthly plan with unlimited downloads, so with my usage, it works out quite well. Keep the GPRS to check mails from my phone only in an emergency, since the speed is so terrible.
  8. That sure was a good one. I can imagine a McAfee user, happily going about his/her business when all of a sudden, every spread sheet is blocked by the anti-virus from being opened because they're all quarantined. Now, that would sure put quite a lot of people out to roast McAffee. I'm actuallysurprised that no one's gone about claiming massive damages as yet. Coming from a reputed company, one trusted to safe guard one's computer, something like this is very serious indeed. In fact, at that level of professionally running a firm, there has just got to be some sort of multiple redudency system where there is a multi-point check against errors like this.
  9. Linux viruses are not quite heard about, and a major anti-virus firm coming out with a warning for Linux seems like a PR and/or scare tactic. Automatic installation and even remote installation of a malacious object in a Linux OS is fairly difficult. It is vital to have a firewall, whichever OS one's running and for linux users, who're much more involved with their systems and are generally more aware of the "computing' world around them, this is much of a given. The thing with Linux users is that much of the software that is used is usually opensource. This is of course very disturbing to companies manufacturing software and especially so for anti-virus firms, since they have a cash cow in renuals itself. With huge swathes of users - especially the young who adapt to Linux so very easily, using Linux, the large companies of the world, non-OS producing (mainly the supporting software) are very worried with the trend. As far as I can tell, the next few years will see a concerted effort to try the very foundations of Linux for it's strength, much sponsored by large corporations. And Linux will evolve. Like it always has.
  10. I've got all the Buddha Bar collections and this one sounds like a good buy/download. will remember to get home and look for it. On a similar line, I also do like Talvin Singh quite a lot. The compositions are very much on the same lines as Buddha Bar. Time to go Music hunting.
  11. I've been using a Toshiba Satellite 3000 for the last 6 years and it's been giving me great service. I've utilized it for graphics as well as video editing and rendering, other than the regular internet, gaming and running Apache on Windows. I bought it with 512 MB RAM, and it's got a 1.2 celeron processor. As long as I don't render more than 2 movies at a time, it's never hung. Toshiba's got good hardware and handles Windows well. I tried Linux (Redhat and Debian) for about a year, but switched back to Windows since performance was faster using Windows. HP is also a good bet. My girlfriend has one and it's also put to good use, since it's on 24/7 and extensively used to scan and continously run OCR on documents (Law research). But that machine is doing a 1024 RAM and has a 4 Gig processor, and packs a decent 120 HDD. If connectivity is a concern, make sure you have bluetooth, Wireless networking, IR, Multiple card reader becides the DVD R/W. You'll get an HP with a great config for under 1500USD. If you've got friends travelling to South Asia or to Dubai, have them pick a machine up there.
  12. For about 3 years I was using PHPNuke and have just moved onto Dragonfly. Dragonfly is extremely effecient, simple to install and use and I had my re-done site up in 10 minutes flat.. There are a number of free opensource CMS available and you can compare, utilize the user and admin demos and even put in, edit and delete content at OpensourceCMS.com By checking out the functionality, and the kind of output you get, by utilizing the demos for each CMS, you'll get a fair idea of what you want. Personally I utilize dragonfly because it's got a blog, forum, picutre gallery, calendar, downloads and has the option of integrating a bunch of other modules including an e-commerce module that patches in through your subscribed payment gateway. On the long run, a really good deal. All the best.
  13. Wow, now that's quite a something, launch a sattelite from a satellite, with human power.. Now, I'm all for the theory that the golf ball is actually a trial minature satellite, that may or may not be part of a hive of hundreds of minature satellites, to be utilized for communications, positioning and keeping an eye out on the planet or maybe out into space. There's been talk over the years of deploying a mesh or hive of minature sattelites, that may not be detectable by ground stations, that may be used for any of many uses. Also, with the kind of miniturization available today, it's very likely that a mesh/hive of tiny satellites, with distributed computing and the ability to rapidly bounce signals between themselves and earth stations, such a space solution becomes a very viable option for anyone willing to make the investment. And the lone golf ball actually amongst the mesh may not be a publicity stunt, and actually be a back up story just in case any of the hive satellites hit another space object.
  14. 1. Sometimes after you delete stuff from a folder, and you were using a program or file from the folder before deleting the file/program, during use, the program would have paged the memory and put a process in queue.. now although you have seen the file and/or run the program you just feleted from the folder, the memory still has a process in que and if the process refers to the folder where you've deleted the fole/program from, then the OS will not allow you to delete the folder. Solution, wait for a while (if you're running on a low amount or RAM reboot) and then delete the foder. 2. You have a hidden file in the folder that is being paged and is queued in a process. Unhide all folder contents. Delete any hidden folders (as long as they are not system critical), refresh the folder and then delete it. 3. You have some sort of malacious ware/file that is running from the folder location and is hidden; or the folder is being used as a location by some program to briefly store temp files. Since the folder is locked for use, you need to kill any process that may be using the folder before you can delete the folder. Solution, reboot your comp in safe mode (press F8 to start in safe mode) and delete the folder. (Safe mode allows only essential processess to run). Hope this helps..!!
  15. Used to love the game.. this was one of the first, first person, games I ever played. The detail was pretty good and the fact that it was extremely challenging was an even better rush. Will watch out for the new Game.
  16. The Norton AV packaged is available free for only a limited time period as I'm led to believe. (there was an earlier post on this which I can't seemt o be able to locate). But Adaware is a good prog. It scans pretty thoroughly. The thing is that Google has a whole bunch of stuff that's just right for Windows but very little else for other platforms (yes they have a great deal for MAC too). In Google's quest to provide their users with free to use SW and internet utilities, they should come out with a comprehensive platform that encompassess OS, multimedia, gaming, business, communication and internet. Even if everything on the desktop has a dedicated section for textual advertising, I do believe that people would relish the thought of not having to pay for any of the OS on the machine. But the quality has just got to be better than Win, a whole bunch more controllable than MAC and eons ahead in user friendlyness than most Linux platforms. All this bundled in with internet business and other tools would make Google king of the road.. (and I do hope there are a few other competetors to keep Google at bay AND to make sure every platform has a high evolution curve).
  17. Extremely exciting stuff.. when my dad was young, he got his kicks out of the massive increase in the number of airports mushrooming across the world. According to him, his dad (my grand dad) would tell him that mass air transport would never be viable nor would the world take to it and that sailing between continents would countinue as the main means of mass transport between continents for a few centuries... look at the world today and you'll see every village equipped with at least the very basic airport. I do believe that within the next decade we may be seeing a great many people heading out for a bit of exotic space tourism.. and mayhaps within a few decades we'll be regularly doing the inter-planetary voyages, like how making a trip half way around the world is no big deal today. Here's to space travel.
  18. If you're on a Windows system, you could get ahold of the Windows Media Encoder (Available Here). To use this you will also need the supporting audio and video codecs - WMV & WMA codecs (Available here). The application is simple enough to use, just start it up, follow the screen directions, choose wether you want to grab just audio, video or both, and viola.. you're ready to capture. Run your onscreen video/audio and click start.
  19. Holy wow.. and I thought that the field of bio-robotics was still in its infancy. I just came across a person yesterday (currently visiting Singapore) who was into robotics and does some work on hive technology. I actually thought that was pretty interesting since robotics environment is currently really interested in figuring out how to make simple robots react to certain environmets and create learning robots that store learnt information in biological systems like strands of braincells. Sinilar to this I'd read a while back about scientists developing a latex that weould respond by flexing to mild electrical inputs; which enabled the scientists to create moving parts without gears and mechanical energy transfer sections on small robots. (Similar to a human muscle). Must research this some more and see how much of progress has been made so far.
  20. You should check your USB hub by connecting some other USB device to your computer through the hub. If the computer is not detecting this, then perhaps your USB hub requires a driver or a manual installation. Usually Xp should automatically detect this, but sometimes if the service pack has not been updated, then HI-Speed USB drivers will not be loaded and this may be a cause for concern/ problem. Can's seem to think of any oter reason this problem should occur.
  21. Well, I was talking about slicing a template image into the corrosponding bits relating to borders, corners, headers.. etc.. these form the very basic structure of a webpage design as defined by the rendering machine through the css/ template page it outputs. You may slice an image to make links out of or use scripting to define any area of a page (which may corrospond to an area of an image that you'd like a link over which to appear) as a link. Of course, in a template design, bits of the template result in link areas (which may be images) in which case, whichever way you look at it, it'd be using an image as a hyperlink.
  22. At present I've got 30 BG processess on and that's because I've allowed a lot of unnecessary stuff to utalize automatic updates... however I suppose that if I were to stop all the automatic updates, stip my apache server and my SQL, screenprint ping software etc - stuff that loads on start, I suppose that I could bring down the number of processess down to between 15 and 18.. Untill I pugraded my RAM to 512 I'd never allow more than the most essential stuff to run.. now I guess I've started overlooking stuff.. however, if I'm running memory intensive programs like when I'm working with graphics.. then I turn off most non-essential processess..
  23. Go in for a blood test for your sugar levels. I have gone through the same symptoms and have been diagnosed as being hypoglycemic. Hypoglycemia is a condition where the body burns up sugar really quickly and if you have a significant period of fasting (such as sleeping) you're going to land up with a considerably low sugar level. The first thing to do is to consult with your doctor and get yourself tested for both diabetes as well as for hypoglycemia. If you have diabetes, you'll need to get onto insulin medication right away, and if you have hypoglycemia, you'll have to immediately get onto a regemented diet - concentrating on stuffing yourself with food before going to bed. Get yourself checked.
  24. Wicca as far as I am aware is 'A way of life'... historically, nature worship was the original of all worship, since the first people that started of praying, did so to nature since nature inspired awe and terrified early man who did not understand much of nature. Wicca, is basicaly the worship of the basics of life. It's defined by the parameters of nature worship and even human worship (in some forms). Essentially it revolves around understanding, bonding and being a part of the universal energy fields that surround us through all animate and in-animate things. Take for example, Hinduism. It has its roots in the very ancient (circa 1500-2000 bc) of times when the understanding of nature was entirely the vogue. When we look at the non-commercialized form of Hindu worship today, it maintains the essence of reaching out to the universal all encompassing energy (Bhrama). A lot of religions around the world have their basis defined by the search for and attaining a bonding with the universal energy. That's Wicca... (my understanding of it).
  25. The thing is that people look out to increase their web footprint by adding links to themselves on different websites. One of the measures of website popularity is through the number of links to the person's website. Especially so if the website linking to your site is a popular website itself. So if you want to get a higher search engine rating, get your website listed in as many popular websites as you can and you'll be on the path ot fame soon enough.
