  1. All of the cooling methods work in some way or another. But does it really matter? Your cpu is designed to work properly up to a certain temperature and only if you exceed that temperature for a given length of time your cpu gets fried. So why would someone harass themselves about reducing their cpu temperature if it is not over-clocked? Your hard drive generate almost as much heat as your cpu and dissipate the heat in the case. Now if you got hot air circulating in the case then the cooling fan on the cpu will be blowing hot air on the heat-sink and reduce the amount of heat that gets dissipated from the cpu. So stick two fans in the case one on top and one in the back and don’t worry about it. If your computer is not over-clocked then you don’t have anything to worry about.
  2. Please read the TOS and you will find the answer .Please note this line " Xisto.com has a zero tolerance policy for the use of its network for the posting of messages or commercial advertisements, which violate the rules, regulations, FAQ or charter of any newsgroups or mailing list. "PM an admin if this don't seem clear to you.
  3. Coder is right, it’s that simple and I have done it more than once. Select backup from your cpanel, and then click on the database you want to backup. It will give you the option to save the backup as a *.gz file and let you chose where to save it on your computer.
  4. I very much support what mastercomputers is saying. I think there is too much information crammed into one page, hence the small type. I like to think simple and get the message out, like movie trailers. Create an intro page with highlights of your best quality and features with links to the more technical information. I like to think simplicity is the key ingredient to a web page.Gif animations are friendlier than flash because they don’t need a plug-ins and will display on any browser. But I will not use too much animations or graphics to create distraction. I also like uniformity in a page design and thinks it make a site look more professional. In American business politics comparison to other competitors that you beat hands down make good reference material.
  5. I have done it this way and it worked out fine but required some editing.First I downloaded the entire site to my hard drive cgi-bin and all, and then did a backup of the databases and save them too. I located all the code on any page that pointed to the old sub-domain and changed those including links.I created new databases with the same names and login as the old ones at the new site and restored the backups. I then entered the admin panels of the forum etc. and edited the content of the database fields to match the new site.It took me a few days but I did not have to remake the site.
  6. You may not be able to remedy your problem in a conventional manner. There is too much interference generated in a computer to really get clean audio from a regular sound card. I periodically reinstall my sound card drivers to get a better sound as the quality deteriorates over a period of time. If you could shield your sound card in a metal housing and get a clean ground also grounding the housing it will do the trick. But here is something you can try that takes the audio from your usb port as digital audio and convert it to analog. They have box for about $150.00 bucks that seem to be popular. http://www.stereo-link.com/ Good luck!
  7. This pole sucks! This pole sound like someone asking you what is the best fish to eat?Maybe you need to rephrase the question.
  8. I support what you are saying and think that management should consider making the change to hide the login name.If I had bad intentions it make it easier by having half my work done for me if I already know the login name. All I would have to tangle with is only the password.I have question it myself several times. ;)I went into my profile and removed it and it don't show any more. Also everything seem to be fine, no problems created.
  9. Please have a look at this site and there are many more that will state this fact. "Microsoft officials conceded, under oath, that most of the Windows operating system had been copied from the Mac operating system." http://macvspc.info/ Have fun Additional info Graphical User Interface (GUI) The GUI had its roots in the 1950s but was not developed until the 1970s when a group at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) developed the Alto, a GUI-based computer. The Alto was the size of a large desk, and Xerox believed it unmarketable. Jobs took a tour of PARC in 1979, and saw the future of personal computing in the Alto. Although much of the Interface of both the Lisa and the Mac was based (at least intellectually) heavily on the work done at PARC, and many of the engineers there later left to join Apple, much of the Mac OS was written before Job's visit to PARC. When Jobs accused Bill Gates of Microsoft of stealing the GUI from Apple and using it in Windows 1.0. The fact that both Apple and Microsoft had gotten the idea of the GUI from Xerox put a major dent in Apple's lawsuit against Microsoft over the GUI several years later. Although much of The Mac OS is original, it was similar enough to the old Alto GUI to make a "look and feel" suit against Microsoft dubious. Taken from âapple-history.comâ On November 10, 1983, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City, Microsoft Corporation formally announced Microsoft Windows, a next-generation operating system that would provide a graphical user interface (GUI) and multitasking environment for IBM computers. Microsoft promised that the new program would be on the shelf by April 1984. It might have been released under the original name of Interface Manager if Microsoft's marketing whiz, Rowland Hanson, had not convinced Microsoft founder Bill Gates that Windows was the better name. Taken from âAbout.comâ website.
  10. I have worked with MACs and PCs for more than ten years now and can say from experience that the MAC OS has been more stable than the PC OS.Bill’s company used to develop software for MACs before he got the DOS development contract. It was the MAC desktop environment architecture that gave him the idea for windows. No one can tell me otherwise! The MAC OS for most of its life has been backward compatible with old systems; unlike in the PC world if you upgraded your OS you had to upgrade hardware.SCSI, USB and FIREWIRE have been a part of the MAC world before PCs saw any of these technologies. MACs have been expensive and third party development has been hindered. But you will find that most complicated software like video studios, music, and labor-intensive programs lean towards MACs.I am comfortable in both worlds and love to work with both; it’s hard to choose.
  11. I have used the phpbb quite well even at another site I built. It is simple to setup in the cpanel, just select phpbb under preinstalled scripts. Give the bb a name, setup the admin name and password and the rest is done for you. The system creates some sample categories for you to start with. The colors can be changed in the admin panel and is fully customizable. You can edit the graphics and change them or even use templates. Here is mine: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  12. I found a little program that does it for you right off the internet some time ago. I have used it several times and it work well. It seems harmless enough I scanned it for viruses and every thing. It’s only 10k compressed I would be happy to share it with anyone who wanted it just email me for a copy. Strange enough I did not find any copyright information with it so I don’t even know who made it or if it’s copyrighted. There is no company name in the properties.I will provide it to anyone at their own risk!
  13. Some of us will never put on a pair of pants without first putting on briefs, but the kids of today thinks that a pair of boxers and their pants halfway down their legs is the way to go. Even to wear a brief under the boxer is asking too much for my son but I will never be caught dead without a brief. At one time AOL was the only internet company some people knew, and it provided them everything they need to know about the internet.Old habits die hard!
  14. Thanks much for the comments, I think I will change the buttons highlight to white. But I will have to convince Timmy about removing his picture from the front page though he may not want to.I will remove the page transition like you said Silentx.I like to play around with graphics Qop and I am a mean photographer by my standards. I did the graphic editing with paint shop pro.
  15. It’s funny you should think that floppies are dead, because that’s not quite true. The technology is changing but still has a long way to go before floppies get toss out the door. Many schools still use floppies for students to store data, and many companies still think it cost too much to upgrade their computers. Floppies will be around for some time to come believe it or not.I am right now repairing a computer with windows 95 for someone, and the person don’t think it’s necessary to upgrade to windows 98 because he only want it for letters he said. There are a lot of people who would say the same thing and would only give up if they can no longer get what they want (floppies in this case).
  16. It is a common practice for some people to take advantage of a situation, never thinking of other persons who have genuine causes and willingness to abide by rules and regulations. We all know how large our sites are and what resources they would eat up, so if our sites are too large for the free service provided then it maybe making enough money to pay for itself. But who cares if the service provide make up new rules or stop providing free hosting for people who really need it? You didn’t like the service anyway so it’s no big deal.Well some of us care about loosing the great services provided here at Xisto and do not wish for others to screw up things for us, so please consider paying for the hosting if your site is too big or uses up more resources than allowed.Thank you.
  17. This is great! But if you change the settings to only half of what you stated here a person will still see a great improvement in the speed. I have always wondered if this could be done or we would have to just wait till the new upgrade come out. It’s nice I like it already!
  18. Do any of you guys have a WAP site or has an interest in making one? How many of you have used a wap browser or even used your cell phone to access a wap site? I know some people donât care about cell phones other that to make call, but the technology is here to stay. Like computers the cell phone will be integrated with every aspect of communication and is constantly expanding. The WAP protocol is the leading standard for information services on wireless terminals like digital mobile phones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). WML is the language used to create pages to be displayed in a WAP browser. Here is my wap site still under construction: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I actually did not build the wap engine because I donât know php but by golly I will learn it.
  19. I sometime get on to the forum and for some reason have to leave my computer or maybe fall asleep. The next time I go back could a few hours or a full day. I was wondering if the system admin could set a time limit for inactive logins that would trigger an automatic disconnection or logoff for a user. The idea is in the interest of security for the site like in the case of an ftp login.
  20. I use both Photo Shop and Paint Shop Pro for different reasons. I like to use PSP for web editing stuff because it is simple to use and can use most of the plugins that PS use. Also with the GIF Animator integration I’m using two programs in one.PS now I use more for picture editing like when I sling out my handy Digital Cam there is always some thing to be adjust to get the final masterpiece. The brightness may need some tinkering, I might have to do some cropping and the list goes on. Then when it comes to the plugins and what you can do with images is amazing, the main thing I like it for.
  21. Ok guys are we trying to kill a cockroach with a sledge hammer? If you just want to save data you don’t need to make it complicated like you are setting up a fortune 500 company. And judging from what you say “home network” you are not sharing the data with the world. Just create a folder where you want to keep the data and share it across the network. You can protect the folder if you want to but I doubt you would. Use the resources you got (win xp, nt4 or what ever you have already) and save the time trying to get something else, then you never do it.
  22. Can someone close this tread or move it to the right location?
  23. I have a problem too, but the message is not the same. I get a timeout error so I’m thinking that it may be something to do with the database getting updated when your account is added (propagation). I could be wrong for sure. I will wait and see because just using the IP address should work just fine.I have tried every thing still can't get on. I did as the cpanel suggested but to no avail.I did find my problem, my firewall was blocking something. Any ways all is well now.
  24. I did my site in 2003 and have not updated it since. I am ashamed because I did it to sell stuff and have not stuck to my code of ethics. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ This is my last job for a tour guide operator on the Island. /legacy He wanted it simple with the hope to expand later. Thanks to astahosting for the space, my Red Cross youth site is alive again. It's 95% complete I just need to do some more code fixing. I created this site 1 year ago and had it hosted for free, but it only lived for three weeks. The hosting site killed it with no explanation, no warning what so ever. I later realized that all the free-hosted sites were deleted and only paid service was provided. We were used as ginipigs to get the service tested and stabilized for them. It took me a year to build up the courage to try again. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  25. Your explanation of the problem is not clear enough. You have explained what does not happen but not what happen. You have not explained what type of protocol (txp/ip, netbui) in use. Have any changes or upgrades (service packs) have been added to any of the machines. What type of OS is installed. What about security settings on the browsers? You have a lot more to explain for us to be able to help you.
