  1. there's really no need to "learn" applescript. you can find scripts in books and online for simple tasks, I use applescript often but I know pretty much no unix scripting. kinda like javascript, when i need to use it on a webpage I either get a ready made script from a book or a website or I get one of my friends to write it for me
  2. I just got Gmail and I must say that I love it. The spam thing is great (no spam in my Inbox and it's been about 2 weeks), but I have to say my favorite feature is the ability to search for any content in a certain email. If I need a piece of info all I have to do is enter it into the search box at the top of the page, and I get it in seconds.
  3. I have been looking high and low for a good domain service, and most places I have checked have Perl as a feature (including this one). What is Perl? It is included in the same info space that stuff like cPanel is put. But most importantly, how can Perl help me? If it can't, why do they advertise the ability to use it everywhere?
  4. I voted for stem cell research. We use animals all the time for medical research, and those are whole concious beings. Stem cells are parts of smoething that has the potential to be concious. And there are many things that we could figure out using stem cells. Why should we "save" things that aren't even born when we can save those who are alive?
  5. You appear to have forgotten my favorite browser, Safari. It is the browser packaged with Mac OS 10. It is the Apple company's first foray into the world of browser and in my opinion it is very well done. It is simple to use and very useful. There are still a few bugs being worked out, but that is only to be expected. Unfortunately you can only use it if you have a Mac.
  6. The use of floppy discs seems to be declining every day. Macintosh computers are no longer even made with floffy drives and windows computers will most likely follow suit sooner or later. Files are much bigger these days than they were back when floppy discs were first invented and so nothing but very basic things (text, spreadsheets, etc.) can even fit onto a floppy. Also, the fact that it is amazingly simple to burn files to a disc (most computers these days come with CD burning capabilities) makes it so floppies are pretty much useless. I suppose that in a few years no one will even remember what floppies were.
  7. Whenever I really need to stay awake I tend to turn to coffee. But If I ever need a bigger jolt at many drugstores you can buy caffienated gum, caffienated mints and caffiene pills. While I realize that having too much caffiene in your body may cause some sort of damage (no one is really quite sure what caffiene can do to you) but I have not noticed any negative effects from any of these products.
  8. Has anyone else heard about the fact that the Adidas shoe comoany is now developing a type of shoe that has a microchip that reads various patters in the way a person runs, making it able to adjust arch support and other stuff like that? It shocked me at first, the idea that even our shoes will now posses mini computers. Not that I'm complaining, I love computers.
  9. I first discovered the joys of listening to my favorite radio stations when I took an extended trip to Australia (way out of the range of every station that I listen to). Distressed at the thought of having to give up me stations for any length of time so I chose to turn to the source where most of us get our answers, Google.com. I searched for my favorite stations and discovered that most of them had websites, and a bunch of the ones that had websites also had live streaming programming directly over the internet.
  10. I agree that the Wacom tablets are the best out there. The site also has this cool matching program where you answer a bunch of questions (including price range and what you would use it for). It then gives you the tablet(s) that would be best suited to you. The tablets are also packaged with a wireless pen and a wireless mouse. I believe it also comes with Photoshop Elements (not the best thing out there, but it's included so yuo might as well use it). All of my friends who do graphic design use Wacom tablets.
  11. The reason I use Macs are because I am not quite good enough to use Linux or Unix, I like things really simple sometimes. Mac is a Unix based OS so I still posses a fraction of that power. If I did a lot of developing I would probably want to switch over to Linux, all of my colleuges who develope extensively use it.
  12. When the major OS' were first being created the reason that people liked macs is because of their ease of use. You didn't have to memorize all sorts of code just to open a document, they had an interactive interface from the start. Now that everything is so simple a hamster could run it, the Apple company has gone the other way. They still have the simple interface for those that don't require something more customizable, but thanks to a little program called Applescript you can use basic unix programming to change the inner workings of programs and documents (you can even change the OS to some extent). From simple things like allowing free Quicktime to go into fullscreen mode, to more complicated things. Ease of use when I need it and customization when I need it are the reasons that I chose Mac.
  13. Many people when choosing an operating system simply look and say "Well more people use Windows, so it must be better!" This is not really the case, the reason more people use windows is because back in the 80s the main computer companies (at that time Apple, Microsoft and IBM) were at a crossroads, they had to decide what they really wanted to do as far as what they produced. The Microsoft corporation decided to give up making their own hardwear and focus completely on softwear. The Apple company decided to continue producing their own hardwear believing, rightly so, that having machines built to their own specifications would improve quality by a lot. Unfortunately this meant that the different companies that made computers for the Windows OS drove down the price of the machines (that's what happens with copetiton) and so all the people who wanted something cheep and able to word proscess went over to Windows. The reason that the Apple company has not died out is because many people choose quality, but I guess there are arguements for either OS.
  14. I voted for Perl because it's really the only one that I have ever used extensively. Should I try PHP?
  15. My favorite free blogging service is Modblog. It's really easy to use, and if you want to customize your blog by writing it in HTML you can. I'm addicted to it
