  1. Very nice How To but what does it have to do with "Web design and HTML"? It probably should be in the "Tutorials and How To's" section. Please try to take more notice of where you are posting and less notice of how many posts you have left till you get your hosting .
  2. I have seen some graphire tablets around and thought they were great but never really thought about getting one. Do you know around how much they cost? Also I have heard many good things about photoshop but haven't tried it. I will considr getting it.
  3. I have always believed that yes in most cases keeping it simple is indeed better than trying to do too much and screwing half of it up. With your second problem, maybe you should look at some of the portals around where I believe you can use a kind of customizable template. It will help you create alot of pages much faster without having to put in as much time or effort. Also if you could tell us the url of your site we could probably hep you much better.
  4. Unfortunately I have no idea how to do what your asking, however I would just like to advise you not to use MS frontpage ever again. It is a terrible web editor and it makes illegal pages. I suggest Macromedia Dreamweaver which is easily the best editor around with both WYSIWYG and coding capabilities. It does however cost quite alot so if you don't want to spend the money you can get a very nice Open Source editor from here. It is called 1st page 2000 and is much better than MS frontpage. You can also get much better support from others who use this program.
  5. Unfortunately I was also raised using windows and now I have used it for so long don't think changing to linux is really worth the truble. Anyway I use:1. OS: Microsoft Windows XP (SP2)2. Web Server: Xisto's Apache web server3. Database: I am currently experimenting with MySQL database4. Dynamic Page Language: usually PHP5. Page Designer: Macromedia Dreamweaver (If it's just something quick and simple i'll use notepad)6. Graphic Designer: I really need to find a good one of these!
  6. I've never used frames because of all the reasons stated above but I've also never frowned upon their use by another person. I think it's just what you prefer really. I've seen quite a few very successful sites that use frames rather well, no where near the amount of sites that don't use frames of course but who's counting right?
  7. I would suggest dividing up the programming section into the languages. That would of course be a huge job ofor the admins who are already very busy with general moderating and the hosting accounts.
  8. I never have used portals or templates and I don't plan to. They can be quite helpful if either you need a site quickly or you don't really know what you're doing but I hate having the possibility that another site could have the same settings and so almost identical styles. Plus I like knowing that I have created my own unike thing all by myself and I know exactly how every part of it works and why . It also means that if something goes wrong I know how to fix it.
  9. I got a "could not find" message. The site seems to have been deleted. Because the code was illegal as said above maybe? I would only use it to use it to prank friends anyway. What was the script written in anyway, php, perl?
  10. I agree with all that has been said above and would like to add that it is nice to allow the members to post some emoticons both the usual and possibly some unike to the site. Post counting is also a good thing to have. I think that adding a calender is probably going to far though, the odd anouncement to say the board's design is going to change or whatever is ok but a full on calender with public holidays and stuff on it? definately a no-no!
  11. Like ssjojo I also prefer to use statcounter.com's services. Although I have only tried about half of those that are on the above list. They have heaps of great features and their counters can of course be invisible or you can design your own.
  12. I think OpenBSD would lean more towards the bazaar side of the scale as people can contribute ideas etc. to the project. As for windows being the only popular closed source operating system, isn't Solaris a closed source operating system? I thought it was and from what i have heard it is resonably popular.
  13. I like the colour scheme and layout for the new (red) one better. The only thing is I would include the news section from the old (blue) one (of course replaceing the blue shading in the background with red shading). Perhaps placing it in the top left (still below the heading of course) as that is where most people tend to look first.
  14. I have only read the introduction at the moment but I really liked how he compared the two styles. I plan to read the rest over the next week or so, so you can expect my opinion when I have finished.
  15. It sounds quite good and as I don't have a webcam I couldn't care less about the video conferencing. Is it free? If so where can I get a copy?
  16. I'm no admin but I beleive it says in the rules that instead of "double posting you should edit the post you've just done. My gues is it was an accident though as you even repsted the link . It's a great site by the way it has tonnes of tools to use and all free.
  17. At the moment I prefer Windows beecause I have always used it and its quite simple. If I really wanted to get a truly brilliant website going and decided not to be stingy and get a web server at home I would probably go with Linux though. It has no viruses, is widely supported and is of course free. It is probably the most secure OS available, which is what you want when hosting a website
  18. I use Opera for it's speed and tabbing, so naturally I create all my websites for this. I then adapt them so they still look good in IE, FF and Mozilla (whcih is as close as I can get to testing it on a mac browser). If anyone creates pages and tests them only in IE, please don't. It is:a) very amatuerishb) damaging to the web standards projectand c) really anoying to the countless people like me who do not use the popular however sh!t browser IE.and for those selfish people who don't care about any of that and need yet another reason to adapt their pages for more browsers,d) it discourages alot of potential veiwers of your site like me!
  19. My name is easily the most basic of all, Darren is my name. Yep that's it. That's how incredibly imaginative I am. Which is probably the main reason I am so much better at coding than graphics.
  20. They're gonna have to try a bit harder than that. I saw last time I went to google that they have now indexed 8 billion pages. In case any of you aren't any good at maths that's 10 times the pages that Blinkx have indexed. In other words google still has a much larger range to search from giving it better results. Good luck to them though, the closer they get to google the harder google will work to stay ahead (and of course we get all the benefits ).
  21. This is the reason I still have a floppy drive in each of my computers at home (even my pare parts one). It my get used once a year if it's lucky but that one time may save me alot of money or time . Plus a computer just dosen't look quite right without the smaller slot bellow the big CD/DVD rom drives. As for using the hundreds of exess floppys I have around the house, I like to go out to the shed, take out the old nail gun (or if I'm feeling really patient and careful i'll use super glue) and creatively stick em' to this big block of wood which I call a artform and plan to one day sell for alot of money .
  22. Msn messenger 7 beta is the latest one out so far (for some reason the file name sais its v.9 ???). You can get a copy here. I quite like it. It isn't that much different from version 6.2 which i previously had. A couple of the features are being able to nudge the person your talking to, an option to sign on in offline or away mode (something quitee handy for me cause I often can't be bothered talking but still want to know whos online) and of course some new smilies .
  23. Even without the added features I would probably still get the PSP. I have looked at videos and screenshots of both of them and the graphics are way better on the PSP. The touch screen on the DS just seems kinda gimicky (something they added just to make it sound better instead of for better playability etc.) to me. Nintendo only really has two things going for it right now. 1) A whole bunch of customers loyal to the Nintendo name from previous great consoles. 2) Alot of much better quality games already signed up with Nintendo. EDIT - http://4bitterguys.com/phpBB3/ This is a bit old but still funny. Actually almost everything on this site is worth a look.
  24. I have no idea what you are talking about. Can anyone tell me what he/she is on about?
  25. I agree that both are as good as one another but I still think that if nothing better comes along and creams them both (this is what will happen in my opinion) , flash will win. Not because it creates better graphics or whaterver but because it is so much more user friendly.
