  2. it certainly is an old technology... i don't see any recent/new video cards made with VGA connection... i always have a few converters/adapters DVI-VGA, DP-VGA, miniDP-VGA lying around because i still own and use old VGA monitors hehe
  3. i see... yea i'm only setting up mine because i realize my current broadband package comes with an option of a Free Static IP addy... otherwise i wouldn't be bothered setting up a server... the PC i'm using for the server is an old machine of a mate of mine who was gonna throw it away, so i grabbed it
  4. and quite a lot of people use Ubuntu so its a lot easier just to stay with Ubuntu Server i have decided to go with Ubuntu Server with Xubuntu Desktop because i've fiddled around with Ubuntu for sometime now i think is a lot easier to stick to an Ubuntu Server (i'm not a power user of Linux but more of an explorer hehe) http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ is my Server... Nothing there yet... will use it as my Wordpress Playground, and maybe other stuff but haven't decided on what they would be yet... what do you guys use your home servers for anyways?
  5. it is pin number 9 - so it is one of the ground pins... so shouldn't matter thanks MC
  6. one of my extension VGA Cables have one pin missing... just notice it todaywhat could the effect of this be on display? although there is no noticeable effect because this cable is used to connect to the TV and i haven't really played anything 1080p on to it
  7. have you looked into the drivers? maybe the wifi card might have a linux driver from its support site? or maybe a fresh re-installation? is this the main OS on your lappy?
  8. so the annoyance comes to life when the wifi router is off? could it be that its picking up a weak signal from your neighbours? but then how can their router be on if there's a power cut... hmmm interesting scenario you got there...
  9. if you sing good enough i'm sure the key board noise will be insignificant
  10. i'm talking about power cuts... doesn't his wifi router goes off when power cuts?
  11. could be your neighbours wifi, should be obvious from the name of the network recognized by your adapter... unless there are mysterious ghost wifi signals lurking around the place?why not just turn off your wifi when this happens? does your laptop have a wifi on/off switch or function key?
  12. in Ubuntu variants its sudo apt-get install Virtualbox great tutorial MC
  13. keep a few earmuffs around the room, and put a Notice on wall to who ever enters to put a pair on
  14. maybe try wearing earmuffs... or headphones with some music on
  15. well keep us posted with your progress... and yes Virtualbox and VMware is still my Virtualization preference
  16. a quick solution would be to grab one of those leather/rubber keyboards hehe... i have one and its water resistance, although it takes a bit of getting use to... but it is very silent when in use...
  17. was more lenient towards Ubuntu 12.04 LTS which comes with the 5 year long term support... but am having a look into CentOS...
  18. I'm going to setup a little server using an old hp box - AMD 64 X2 3800+, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 80GB HDDThe box will be pretty much running LAMP for web dev testing so may probably host a single site...I would also like to access it remotely when i'm not at home... any OS recommendation? Currently looking at Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS but this will be my first time setting up a server, appreciate any advice or additional options that i might need to consider for the setupcheers
  19. i think the Firefox project was backed and greatly funded by google, i'm not sure if they still do now... unless it is google again backing this new OS since its Chrome OS didn't get the expected or wanted traction since launch
