  1. I personally use Google Chrome. One of the main problems I had with Firefox was that when I first turned on my computer, Firefox took ages to load. Chrome was generally the faster. Also, I prefer the Chrome UI.
  2. great, it's monday already

  3. I know I'm a bit late but I'm pretty sure that effect was made using HTML 5.
  4. Hi Tooke, welcome to Xisto. I personally started programming learning Java and I know that it is possible to create a text-based game using Java (as well as GUI). I'm pretty certain you can create a text-based game using other languages as well. Just look around and see what you like.
  5. Open Office is like a double edged sword with me. For starters, I'm running Ubuntu and Open Office is convenient enough to use. However, I've had some issues with formatting. For instance, I was working on my resume and I was tying up loose ends. I saved it as a .doc file just in case I wanted to open it on another machine. I closed Open Office but about 5 seconds later, I realized that I had forgotten to print it out. So I had to reopen it. When I opened the document containing my resume, I was sorely disappointed that most if not all of the formatting had been lost. The column widths were different and the spacing between rows had changed. So I thought, "Probably just a 1 time thing". So I fixed up my resume again and this time, I saved my document with 5 different extensions. I closed/reopened Open Office. Now this is the part that just gets me: every single file had lost some sort of formatting, whether it be the font or the spacing. I repeated this process a few times and it seems to finally be working. I don't want to jinx it or anything. I exported it to a .pdf just in case I need to print it.
  6. I'm sure that doing something like this is possible. There are many products that allow you to do something like this. As for building one yourself, I'm unsure of how long it would take.
  7. I have little to no doubt that Chrome OS will be faster than Windows. However, I'm still skeptical on cloud computing. I'll probably wait awhile before I install this on my machine. Also, since Chrome OS will be implementing the idea of cloud computer, I am assuming that it will be geared towards laptops/netbooks as compared to desktops, although desktops could also be included.
  8. I have another (free) service you can use. I found this a few months ago. It's called http://www.text4free.net/. You just make an account with them and you can send sms messages without charge.
  9. I doubt that this sort of thing will happen. If, by some chance, computers do manage to "take over the world", it will be a person that is responsible for programming said computers. "Computers are only as smart as the people who program them." -Scooter Computer and Mr. Chips
  10. If there is a possibility to integrate flying cars into society, I would probably be against it. First of all, the resources required to make sure this plan does not fail are immense. You need to think about what kind of "roads" they will use. Also, you need to think about how this will affect airplanes. Most likely, the flying cars will not interfere will airplanes because airplanes will be flying much higher. However, you might need to take into account for helicopters.I feel like we could be spending our time more constructively than how to create flying cars.
  11. It's finally Friday.

    Lockerz

Sorry to be blunt here but you're wrong. Lockerz IS NOT a scam. People have received prizes which they bought with the points they earned. Just because you weren't fast enough to redeem your points doesn't mean that others were not. You also have to think about it from their perspective. If they bought enough Macs, iTouch's, and electronics to supply everybody's need, then they would be losing money. With the system they have right now, they are buying just enough merchandise to give to a fraction of the people who visit their site. This keeps the people who redeemed happy while at the same time, keeps the people who didn't redeem keep returning to their site. Then of course, you have people like me who saw the pattern of the constant redemptions where I couldn't redeem anything. In that case, I just gave up and left. But again, as I said in an earlier post, "I despise Lockerz". But it is NOT a scam.
  13. This is just a theory. Since there are 2 parts, it would make sense to split them between the first half and the second half of the book. It's true that there are more fight scenes in the 2nd half of the book (from what I recall) but I'm sure it will be just as good as the first half.
  14. ^ But in response to your question, the first part of the 7th movie will be about the first half of the 7th Harry Potter book. So basically, most of the fight scenes will be the 2nd part. Nonetheless, I will definitely be watching both parts.
  15. I don't really have a favorite band. Fallout Boy is kind of old. I remember listening to them in middle school. But yea, anything with a good beat. There are certain types of songs out of each genre of music that I don't like but I most music. Just not anything related to metal. I also enjoy playing songs on the guitar, so that broadens my choices for music.
  16. I believe that man is a slave of technology. The whole point of technology in general is to make a certain task easier and/or more efficient. If you had the option of using said technology or discard it, man would generally choose the technology. Therefore, man becomes dependent upon technology. If someone is using Technology X to complete a task, he will likely switch to Technology Y if it completes the task faster/more efficiently given that it is affordable and convenient and etc.. Technology is being designed in such a way that it adapts to society. But, I feel, for the few instances where the technology does not adapt, people will adapt so that they can glean the most benefits.
  17. I believe that given the size of the universe, you cannot bar the idea of intelligent life existing outside of Earth. Just because we haven't found any evidence doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. There are close to 125 billion galaxies in our universe. I find it hard to believe that you can make a blanket statement refuting the existence of intelligent life. Also, we seem to have some preconceived notion of what intelligent life is. Granted, if there is intelligent life, it may not resemble the aliens that we have defined, i.e. martians. In addition, their technologies might not be as advanced as we have made them out to be in movies.
  18. I would say that I am a combination of the first two choices. The "Time-Waster" and the "Busy Mind". I'm not that much into competitive gaming. I feel like my time could be spent more constructively. This of course is contradictory to the whole notion of playing games. Just overdoing the "playing" part is not for me.

    Linux Games

I really enjoy playing Quake on Ubuntu. It's an online game and I just use Firefox to open it. The requirements aren't that demanding. I managed to get by on an old (8 years) laptop.
  20. I believe that the importance of history is downplayed by many people (including me sometimes). Let me be more clear. Learning about the United States history is boring to me but may be important to those studying or working in politics. Also, history could also mean learning from your mistakes. If you do something incorrectly in the past, it is generally a good idea to realize what you did wrong and try to do it correctly the next time. If you don't, then you will continue to fail.

    Hello

Thanks for responding Mich. My purpose for participating is to get some web hosting. I'm trying to do it to test out an idea for a website. All of the other free hosts do not provide the accommodations that I need. I spoke to a moderator on Xisto and he said that Xisto is more technical. But I visited here a few days ago and the topics being created looked interesting so here I am.

    Lockerz

I despise Lockerz. It's not a scam when they say they'll give out free stuff. They do. The only problem is that they only allow you to choose your prize (providing you have enough points to purchase it) on certain days. They are unannounced so you kind of have to refresh the page every few seconds. It's usually at the end of a month so you don't have to check for the entire month. Also, you're competing with thousands of other people. This creates the server to be bogged down. Many times, the site just lagged until it timed out. Oh, and points expire after 1 year. So if you haven't used any, you're going to see your total go down after a year.
  23. Wow. One Terabyte is a lot of space for me but 1.2 Petabyte is just unnecessary. However, I have a friend who ran out of space on his 1TB external hard drive. Granted, he had mostly tv shows, movies, and games on it, it was still not enough. The cost of the hard drive is quite cheap in my opinion considering it can hold so much. I would only buy it if I had an immense amount of data to store.
  24. I feel like it would be a good idea to compare computers to TV's in terms of price as well. A TV is generally more expensive than a computer. Therefore, using this logic, it would be a better idea to use a computer to watch videos and TV shows rather than a TV.
  25. My hometown's air quality is relatively low (10-30). I live in in an urban setting but the environment is quite peaceful. Pollution is minimal if present.
