  1. There are many Gallery scripts available, it shouldn't be too hard to find one that suits your needs. If you don't find one you like, look at an existing gallery script and make the changes you want, check first that the original author permits this. Just by looking on one site planet-source-code.com I found 21 gallery scripts. Try them out and see which one you like. I hope that helped.
  2. I agree with wassie here, if it's a pre-made site you're after PHP-Nuke is probably the best free one out there. Because so many people use it there are a huge amount of skins available that can give your site a unique look, well as unique as you can get with PHP-Nuke. While a Content Management Script (CMS) like PHP-Nuke is a good place to start, I'd recommend learning PHP for yourself so you can give your site it's own individual look and feel. Do a search with any search engine for 'php tutorial' and will find there are many sites out there to help you learn. Once you have made your own PHP enabled site, you'll never go back to a CMS again. If you'd rather not search for tutorials, try these sites for a start: http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp http://www.phpfreaks.com/ http://www.free2code.net/tutorials/browse Good luck!
  3. Hmm.. I hope you haven't created a problem for yourself by deleting everything. Normally you would leave those folders there, especially the public_html folder. This is where your web pages go so visitors to your site can see them. Upload your web pages to the public_html folder and make any directories you like within that folder that you want to be visible to your visitors. If you are experiencing problems trying to view your web site, try recreating the folders in the '/' directory like what you see below. If recreating the directories doesn't work, try contacting an administrator and see if they can help you.
  4. I like truefusion's php solution better, it's a lot simpler. I'll use that in the future. All you'd need to do is save it as a php page by itself and then use an 'include' statement wherever you want it on the other page. Good work!I guess the javascript is handy for when you don't have access to php, but that's not a problem at Xisto.
  5. Here's a little random quote script that you can use to randomly choose from an array of quotes you provide. It's very easy to use on any page as it's an external script, you just call it from your page. I wouldn't use it for any more than about 50 quotes though, it would probably slow your site down too much. Here's the code: ar[5] = "Little by little, one travels far." ar[6] = "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." ar[7] = "It's a dangerous business going out your front door." ar[8] = "All that is gold does not glitter." ar[9] = "His house was perfect, whether you liked food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling, or singing, or just sitting and thinking, best, or a pleasant mixture of them all." ar[10] = "Many that live deserve death. And some die that deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then be not too eager to deal out death in the name of justice, fearing for your own safety. Even the wise cannot see all ends." ar[11] = "'I wish life was not so short,' he thought. 'Languages take such a time, and so do all the things one wants to know about.'" ar[12] = "Still round the corner there may wait, a new road or a secret gate." ar[13] = "There I lay staring upward, while the stars wheeled over... Faint to my ears came the gathered rumour of all lands linenums:0'>var ar = new Array(44)ar[0] = "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger."ar[1] = "Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens."ar[2] = "I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done since I grew old and wary enough to detect its presence. "ar[3] = "If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."ar[4] = "It's a job that's never started that takes the longest to finish."ar[5] = "Little by little, one travels far."ar[6] = "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."ar[7] = "It's a dangerous business going out your front door."ar[8] = "All that is gold does not glitter."ar[9] = "His house was perfect, whether you liked food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling, or singing, or just sitting and thinking, best, or a pleasant mixture of them all."ar[10] = "Many that live deserve death. And if they had, we shouldn't know, because they'd have been forgotten. We hear about those as just went on -- and not all to a good end, mind you; at least not to what folk inside a story and not outside it call a good end."ar[20] = "The board is set, the pieces are moving. We come to it at last... The great battle of our time."ar[21] = "The Darkness has begun. There will be no dawn."ar[22] = "Their plans were improved with the best advice."ar[23] = "With hope or without hope we will follow the trail of our enemies. And woe to them, if we prove the swifter!"ar[24] = "Their Oath shall drive them, and yet betray them, and ever snatch away the very treasures that they have sworn to pursue."ar[25] = "The treacherous are ever distrustful."ar[26] = "He should not vow to walk in the dark, who has not seen the nightfall."ar[27] = "Few can foresee whither their road will lead them, till they come to its end."ar[28] = "It's wisdom to recognize necessity, when all other courses have been weighed, though as folly it may appear to those who cling to false hope."ar[29] = "For though I do not ask for aid, we need it."ar[30] = "I have no help to send, therefore I must go myself."ar[31] = "What do you mean? Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good on this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?"ar[32] = "He that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom."ar[33] = "The deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised."ar[34] = "I sit beside the fire and think of all that I have seen."ar[35] = "I wish I had never come here, and I don't want to see no more magic."ar[36] = "The Road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began."ar[37] = "It all comes from here, the stench and the peril."ar[38] = "But only a short way ahead its floor and the walls on either side were cloven by a great fissure, out of which the red glare came, now leaping up, now dying down into darkness; and all the while far below there was a rumour and a trouble as of great engines throbbing and labouring."ar[39] = "A box without hinges, key, or lid, yet golden treasure inside is hid."ar[40] = "Go not to the elves for counsel, for they will say both yes and no."ar[41] = "I am told that I talk in shorthand and then smudge it."ar[42] = "It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him."ar[43] = "Not all who wander are lost."var now = new Date()var sec = now.getSeconds()document.write("<table cellspacing='0' cellpadding='0' border='0'>")document.write("<tr><td><img src='img/scroll_top.gif' width=160 height=37 border=0 alt=''></td></tr>")document.write("<tr><td background='img/scroll_mid.gif'><table align='center' cellspacing='5' cellpadding='5' border='0'><tr>")document.write("<td valign='top'><font size=-1><i>" + ar[sec % 44] +"</i></font><font size=-1 color=#800000><p align='right'><b>J.R.R. Tolkien</b></p></font></td></tr></table>")document.write("</td></tr><tr><td><img src='img/scroll_bot.gif' width=161 height=27 border=0 alt=''></td></tr></table>") The variables you need to set are the top line "var ar = new Array(44)" 44 is the number of quotes, in this case we start at 0 and go to 43, that's 44 lines. Then of course you need set each of the quote variables "ar[0], ar[1], ar[2]" etc to your quotes. The "document write" statements format the text and display it on the page. You will want to change the images used in the table to what ever images you want to use. Copy and paste the code above into a text editor, make your changes and save the file as "quote.js" and then upload it to the server. To call the script you just need to put this code in your page wherever you want the quotes to appear. <script src="quote.js"></script>This assumes the script is in the the same directory as the page calling the script. An example of the above script can be seen here. Look in the bottom left corner of the page, reload the page to see a new quote. Have fun with it! Notice from cmatcmextra: Use [-codebox-] tags when writing long lines of code! This is script - it does not discuss any website - moving out of Website Discussion --> General Notice from KuBi: On top of cmats note, warning issued.
  6. Here is a Flash page header I made for an online roleplaying game. I personally didn't like it because it made the pages too slow to load, especially if you have a modem connection like me. But it's what the customer wanted and once again a web designer was at the mercy of his customer. I know the dragon is a bit funky when it walks but I had to limit the number of frames in an effort to try to keep the file size down. Obviously this was a "Dungeons & Dragons" type role palying game, hence the theme. Shyderra Flash Header
  7. Well guys, here's my first attempt at a render using Photoshop. I normally use Paintshop Pro for all my graphic work but it would seem it doesn't save PNG files with a transparent background, one of it's shortcomings I guess. I think it's one the robots used in the Mechwarrior game, if it's not it sure looks a lot like one. I am sure there are things that could be improved, let me know what you think And the resulting render. Notice from BuffaloHELP: Edited as per request.
  8. Thanks for the information. I can't remember, but I must have applied for package1 and that was what was approved. No big deal, I'll just earn more credits and upgrade, (remembering that every letter I type leads to more credits ) I knew it must have been something I did wrong. Bit of a shame to waste 20 or so credits by having it reset back to 2 credits, but that's the way it goes sometimes. Notice from cmatcmextra: Fixed mistake
  9. This sucks. I see he even has the cheek to link to your images. This could be the easiest way to slow him down, change your image links.I think you need to act on this, try a polite email first but if that doesn't work submit his email address to a few 'opt-in' advertising scams. Another option is to report him to his host, I'm sure they would have a policy about copyright material. As thebluekirby has said, if you don't act, people might think you were the one that stole the content.Good luck with it.
  10. Hmmm... is that SPAM I smell? I think someone is going to get smacked! I hope you weren't looking for hosting here hacker, because that sort of post will not get it.BYE!
  11. Hiya,I have just processed my free hosting account and I think I must have done something wrong somewhere as the credits vs hosting package doesn't add up.When I applied and was approved for hosting I had less than 30 credits. As I wanted Package2 I thought I would build up more than 30 credits so I could get it before I processed the account. I built up 35 credits and went to process my account. During processing I didn't see anything to allow you to choose what package you want, so I thought ok, it must work it out based on the credits you have. The account I was given was Package1 (20mb), so I thought ok, then maybe you have to start with Package1 and then upgrade. I went to upgrade and it said I didn't have enough credit. Now I look at my credits and it says I have 1.99 days of credit. From what I have read elsewhere in the forums, 1 day = equals 1 credit. This means somewhere I have lost something in the order of 23 credits.35 credits to start less 10 credits for package1 = 25 creditsI can build the credits up again so it doesn't bother me too much. I'm confused as to what happened and disappointed I missed out on package2.Anyone have any ideas what I did wrong and what happened to my credits?
  12. I like the layout of your site but I find the colors very harsh. The colors used in your header would make a much nicer combination. I agree with the others about the intro graphic, fading from one picture to another would work well and it needs something to tell the user to click the image to continue. I don't know if it's just my browser (IE6) or the site is not finished, but I couldn't find any links on the site. Nothing in the menu appears to work for me so I couldn't comment on the rest of the site. My other pet hate is if I have to scroll sideways to view a site. Your header is bigger than your content, either make it smaller or the same size. I also prefer a site that resizes itself with table widths expressed in percentages rather than pixel sizes. If that won't work with your layout, at least make it so the viewer doesn't have to scroll sideways to view the site in 800 x 600 resolution, this is usually the lowest resolution most people use. I use 800 x 600 because I have tired old eyes and not a very good monitor. As for advice about what HTML editor to use, I'd suggest moving away from WYSIWYG editors. They will not teach you much about html because you don't actually write the code. Another drawback with WYSIWYG editors is they tend to add a lot of unnecessary code, below is an example from your site. <tr> <small></small> <td align="center" bgcolor="#ff0000" height="20" valign="middle"> <small>Ljubavno gnezdo<br> </small></td> <small></small> </tr> The 2 "<small></small>" tags above and below the "<td>" tags serve no purpose and shouldn't be there. What this does is makes your site bigger and slower to load than it needs to be. There a lots of free editors available, try a search for "html editor" at somewhere like Tucows and look for the "freeware" programs. You might need to try a few programs to find one you like, but with the number available you're sure to find one. Don't be scared to experiment, html is relatively easy once you understand the basics.
  13. I don't know the exact reasons but here's what I think may be the reasons.1. You notice there are advertisements in the forums, it is quite likely Xisto recieve some sort of income for either displaying them or when someone clicks on them. Therefore, if you make it a requirement for people to post in the forum for free hosting, the advertisements are displayed more often and there is more chance they will be clicked on.2. Xisto are building a forum community, by enticing people to post in the forum with free web hosting, it means the community has a better chance of surviving/growing. This again means more advertising and more income to support the free hosting.Personally I think this works really well. Most people would prefer not to have forced advertising on their free web sites. Let's face it, if you didn't mind advertising on your web site you can get free hosting anywhere. But how do you cover the cost of providing free hosting without putting advertising on the members' web sites? This is the perfect solution. By strictly moderating the forum for content, it ensures the free hosting is only given to those prepared to support the community, which again helps it grow.
  14. Thanks for the feedback, this is what helps me learn.@mayank: I guess backgrounds are a matter of preference, I like a background so long as it's not too overwhelming. Some of the animated backgrounds you see around just make me dizzy and distract from the site content.@sxyloverboy: It's funny you should say you think it's a little too basic. I was told the previous version of this site had too many graphics and too much going on. It had a lot of animated graphics, I guess I've gone too far the other way. With the second site, I'm not a fan of intros either. This site was made for someone else and they wanted a Flash intro, unfortunately web designers don't always get to make things the way they like if their making the site for someone else. I guess the main thing from the feedback is to make the first site a little more interesting. I can do that.
  15. This is a very hard question, all of the Graphic17 crew are very talented , each with their own style. I guess it comes down to what style you like. I like Johnny's normally clean lines used in his graphics, but I also like some of snlildude87's grunge style.I guess I'd vote for Johnny too.
  16. I have had my say about a couple of sites on the "Hosted" forum, I guess it's only fair that people have their say about my design. This is the site I hope to host here once I have enough credits for the Package 2 hosting offer. (needed due to the size of the site) It is a fantasy image gallery driven by PHP and MySQL. The link below does not go to a working site, just a html version of the main page, it shows the layout/theme of the site but none of the links go anywhere at this stage. (I need PHP and MySQL to make the site live.) So I guess for this one all I'm after is comments on the layout. Mud Mall Fantasy Gallery Here is another working site that made for an online role playing game that no longer exists. This site only uses html, a Flash intro, some javascript and CSS. Because the game no longer exists, some of the links no longer work, notably those in the header. Shyderra Although the purpose for the site no longer exists, I am fond of the layout and might use it somewhere else in the future.
  17. I'm not going to say anything about the technical aspects of the site except that you need to get away from using Frontpage or any other WYSIWYG editor. You will not learn html using these programs. My main issue is with the layout and content. This is supposed to be a site about web design and graphic design. The design looks very bland yet at the same time hurts my tired old eyes with all that orange. It is screaming for some graphics, whether that be in the form of graphical buttons or some other relevant graphics.I'm sorry to be so critical, you asked us what we think and I think it needs a lot of work.
  18. I think this is along the lines of people who scream and shout about a new super cool site they have made. When you go and look its just a PHP Nuke site or something like it with a nifty skin. I'm sorry but that's not web design in my opinion, it's just content design/management.My 2 cents worth.
  19. My site, (when I get it hosted) is also a gallery, mine is of fantasy images such as dragon and wizards etc. I wrote the scripts for it and instead of using categories I gave each image a description and added a search function. It is a bit tedious writing the descriptions, but that was the way I wanted to go so I could teach myself PHP and make something useful at the same time.As rvalkass said, if you're new to PHP you could always use a pre-made script such as Coppermine. I have used this script, it is very good and has many options. If you want to learn PHP then write your own script, yes it can be frustrating, but it is also very rewarding when you learn how to do it yourself.
  20. Well I must say, this is refreshing. Had I said something like that on a lot of other forums I would have started a flame war. I like this place, sensible, mature conversations. Gotta love it! Anyway, I think most understood what I am trying to say. In my opinion, (whatever that counts for) some of the sigs seem to focus on the background rather than the render and text. Granted there are those that don't such as the ones Johnny put up as examples, (really nice sigs btw) but some of them, well... The one below is a classic example of what I mean, (sorry to single you out). The background completely dominates the sig, it's difficult to see the render and the text is too small in relation to the size of the sig. But that's just my opinion.
  21. I will probably have a few people howl me down here, but I'd like to make a comment about a lot of the sigs I see here. Most of the sigs from the regular contributors here, (you know who you are), seem to feature very elaborate backgrounds. Obviously a lot of work has gone into making these backgrounds, but in my humble opinion, most of them are too 'busy'. By this I mean they tend to overwhelm the render and/or text with their complexity. I thought a background was meant to be just that, something that sits in the background. Some of the sigs I have seen, the background seems to be the main feature of the sig. In my opinion, a sig is to tell everyone else who you are and possibly provide some insight into your interests via the render. This is just my opinion, while the sigs may be technically brilliant with the array of brushes and the like used, the backgrounds often direct the viewer away from the purpose of the sig, i.e. telling ppl who you are via the text and/or render.
  22. To answer this question you really need to know what you want to do with your graphics program. If you are doing print graphics then there is no question, PS is what you need. It has almost endless possibilites as to what you can do with it, if you are prepared to take the time and experiment. It is without doubt, the program for the professional graphic artist. It is expensive, but it is very good.If you are doing screen based graphics where the resolution is much lower, somewhere around 79 dpi I think, then PSP will suffice. I have been making screen based graphics for web sites for a while and I find PSP produces results just as good as PS in this area. I personally find it easier to use than PS, but that's probably only because I am more familiar with PSP than PS. Because I am not a professional, price is also an important factor to me, PSP wins hands down in that department. Sure PSP has a few useless tools such as those god awful picture frames, but all in all I find it does everything I need, especially when you have a good collection of filters to go with it.I have a few graphics programs on my computer, PS, PSP, Fireworks, Corel Draw and few others I use for animated graphics, I use all of them from time to time, but I keep finding myself coming back to PSP as my main graphics program. So I say use the program appropriate for your use and budget, be that PS or PSP.
  23. Thanks again folks, the feedback is appreciated. I agree with the pixel text, it is a little fuzzy. I tried it without anti aliasing and it looked awful, I might have just have do it by hand pixel by pixel to get clean looking text that small. I have a question tho, if I clean up that text now will that be against the SOTW rules? In answer to shigajet's question, I used Paintshop Pro with a few filters, I haven't really explored with brushes much, looks like I need to though. Why do I use Paintshop rather than Photoshop? While Paintshop is not as powerful as Photoshop, it's not far off. I have used it for a long time so I'm used to using it and it's a lot cheaper than Photoshop. The filters I used were:Eye Candy 3.01 - Glow Xenofex 2 - Little Fluffy CloudsXenofex 2 - ElectrifyPaintshop - Inner bevelI'd be lost without my filters! In addition to the information Phyre provided for melkonianarg, layers are very important, it allows you to compose the scene exactly the way you want it. You may find them difficult to learn but they will make your life much easier in the long run.A couple of people mentioned the background could do with improving. I was trying to get a stormy sky look, what improvements do you suggest?Once again, thanks for the feedback.
  24. Hey thanks for the praise. While it is my first ever 'sig', I have played around with graphics for a while. Mostly making images for web sites and banners for people. I have also dabbled with Flash but I find it very time consuming. If you're interested in at looking at what I have made with Flash, here are a couple of links. They are both for a promo I made for a web host, high and low quality versions, (only the sound quality is different). Both are *.exe files because he wanted them as stand-alone files that could be played on any computer. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (1.7mb) http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ (3.4mb)
  25. Ralphie's sig does it for me, the whole thing sorta blends together and has the camoflauge look about it. Just the sort of thing you would expect from a sniper theme.
