  1. Sigh... so many renders and so little time to download them. Mainly because of a dial-up connection and how long it would take to download them. Pity.
  2. These two error messages.... ...suggest to me that there is a file, (perhaps users.php?) that does not have the correct permissions set to allow the file to be written to. It looks like the script might write to a text file or something during the login/signup process, I think this file and/or the folder it is in would need global write permissions. I wonder why you would use a text file to record information like this, a MySQL database would do it so much better. Search for a login script at one of the many PHP resource sites out there, it will save you a lot of work. Hope that helps.
  3. I don't know if it's relevant, but perhaps your hard drive has been formatted for use with WinXP which I believe is FAT32. I think Win98 uses FAT16, therefore the install program for Win98 may have difficulties reading/writing to the hard drive. As I said, I don't know if it's relevant as I don't know enough hard drive formats.Personally I would run with WinXP, but if you must use Win98, you might need to reformat the hard drive using a Win98 boot disk.Hope that helps.
  4. I have noticed there are numerous topics that can't be viewed by normal forum users. These topics would include sig requests that must be approved by a mod and topics for mods themselves. Even though these topics can't be read by normal forums users, they still appear on the latest topic and post lists at the bottom of every page. I think it would make more sense to stop them from being visible in the list if the user viewing the list doesn't not have the required access to view the post itself. Many times I have tried open a topic from the lists only to be shown the "board message" telling me I can't view the topic. It get's a little frustrating after a while and might make people begin to think there is something wrong with the forum.
  5. Tyssen's point about client side 'includes' being able to be turned off is very valid. It seems more and more people are wary of javascript and will turn it off as a security precaution. Where possible you are definitely better off to use server side includes. This doesn't mean client side includes don't have their place, use them when server side includes such as PHP or ASP etc are not available.PHP is an easy and powerful language to use, even an old man like me can learn to use it. If you have it available like you do here at Xisto, make the most of it.As for slowing down the page by using includes, I don't think it would matter which way you do it, the page loading would be much the same. Generally it's basically on text of html that you are including so it be a similar load to actually writing the code on the one page.
  6. Another free html editor program is Alleycode. It's not WYSIWYG like Dreamweaver, but it has some nice options and it is free. If you want to learn how to code yourself, I'd recommend not using a WYSIWYG editor. While you mighjt be able to build a web site faster, it won't teach you much about html coding. You can download Alleycode at https://alleycode.com/
  7. Hopefully this is the kind of "fantasy" you had in mind. I know it's not quite the size you wanted at 400x125, but it looked too big at 400x150. Also, straight abstract just didn't seem to work with this render so I used a grunge backround with some abstract overlay. Notice from jlhaslip: Edit as per report

    Bonsai Kittens

Yes, I'd say it's just a sick joke too. The problem is, there will be some people out there that will try to do this, just because they think they can. Then it is no longer a joke.
  9. What is all this?!? Mine is definitely the coolest sig here, you may as well close the voting now! Just kidding. My vote goes to Mayank, mainly due to a process of elimination. I find Mikes too bright, all detail is lost in the brightness. Mareck's is the opposite, it's too dark to see the detail. $upa pimp, the left render is blurry, and the brushing needs work (You just need practice like I do) Reaver, I have no idea who or what that character is, weren't we supposed to put the character name in the sig too? And I don't like the background, sorry. Now, because it wouldn't be right to vote for mine, (even though it's clearly the best one here ) that leaves Mayank. Seriously though, I like the render Mayank used and the use of the 'blades' on the left side filled up what would have been otherwise a blank spot on the sig. The double border works well too. And to top it off, Wolverine is cool, though not as cool as Spiderman of course. saint-michael:1 mareck:1 mayank:6 $upa pimp:0 avalon:0 reaver:0 Don't take anything I say here too seriously, except the vote of course. I'm just in a humorous mood. Notice from mayank: corrected typing error...my name was written wrongly
  10. I was thinking someone else might have a go at this. They would present a different style that might be what you are looking for. 256 x 256 is a big avatar by the way, some forums limit the size of your avatar and 64 x 64 is a common size.
  11. Part of elevenmil's question wasn't answered. I am considering Xisto - Web Hosting to host my site. I have a lot of files in my Xisto account, (140mb) that I would need to upload to Xisto - Web Hosting. Is it possible for you to do a server to server transfer? Being I am on a dial-up connection it would save me a huge amount of time.
  12. Hrm... a post containing over 1,400 words only earns 1.76 'points', therefore to gain each point you have to post around 800 words. When you need 100 points to earn 1 dollar, you definitely won't get rich with this scheme, but I guess even a small amount of money is money just the same. A post that size would probably earn you 10 times that amount in credits here on Xisto. :PNot saying that paid2post won't or doesn't work, it just seems a lot of work for not much money. To earn the minimum $20 so you can check out, you would need to post somewhere in the order of 1,600,000 words. That's a lot of posting! And some people think you have to post a lot here to keep your account active.
  13. You make an excellent point, I didn't realise that many people turn off js. To clarify things a little here, perhaps you could explain what server side includes are, how to use them and any restrictions they impose. @jlhaslip Yes, the html you insert is affected by css like the rest of the page.

    Hosting Credits

Of course they get something from your posts, otherwise the hosting would not exist. The way I see it, the more posts that are written and read means the more times the advertising here is viewed. The more times it is viewed, the more chance there is someone will click on one of them. I'm not sure if the revenue is generated just from the advertisements being displayed or whether it is when they are clicked on. Either way, if there are more quality posts that people will read, the chances are they will also read the ads and possibly click on them, then Xisto will make the needed revenue to keep this hosting running. Personally I'd much rather have the advertisements here on the forum than my web site. By the way, this post has probably earned me about 2 credits. It's not that hard at all!
  15. Thanks for the feedback, unfortunately using Imageshack is not an option as the way my gallery is set up the thumbnail image has the same name as the full size image only it is prefixed with "t_". Imageshack renames the file you upload with some random name, looking at the Xisto gallery, it appears to do a similar thing. I am assuming that Photobucket also works in a similar fashion so I don't think it's an option either. The host I am currently using for the thumbnails is 1asphost.com. It is a small (20mb) free hosting service that as the name implies, allows you to run ASP scripts. I was experimenting with ASP a while back and still have the account.I might look at dynamically creating the thumbnails on my Xisto.com account again. I did play with it a bit in the beginning but it meant a fair bit of rewriting of my scripts so I abandoned the idea.@tuddy While could I probably have both accounts without their knowledge, I prefer to be up front about it in case it is against the rules. I don't want to do anything to jeapordize my current account, such a great service for free is very hard to come by.
  16. I think the simplest way to do this is to use a javascript that has the information you want and then insert the script in the page where you want it. Unlike PHP or ASP etc. a javascript will work on almost any web host, essentially it is just inserting a text file. Here's a very simple example for inserting a logo image and some buttons, note the use of single quotes around the image and page names. document.write("<img src='my_logo.jpg'><br>")document.write("<a href='contact_page.html'><img src='contact_button.jpg'></a><a href='search_page.html'><img src='search_button.jpg'></a><a href='gallery_page.html'><img src='gallery_button.jpg'></a>") Save the above text in a file called 'mynav.js' and upload it to your web server. Then to display it on a page, just insert the following script tags at the position on the page where you want it to display, in your case it would be immediately after the '<BODY>' tag as shown below. <html><head><title>My Web Site</title></head><BODY><script src="mynav.js"></script>The rest of your page code goes here....You can use pretty much any html code you like, just so long as you replace any double quotes (") with single quotes ('). Experiment a little to see what you can do. As you can see from the example above, if you are going to insert a large amount of html, you can do multiple 'document.write' statements. I hope that helps.
  17. If you must go with a WYSIWYG editor, I'd suggest using Dreamweaver. I think it is far superior to Frontpage in that it doesn't add anywhere near as much 'junk code' as Frontpage. However, if you want to learn how to actually code a webpage I'd suggest using a text based editor. If you do decide to try a text based editor, I'd recommend Alleycode, https://alleycode.com/, it's free and it has quite a few nice features that you don't often find in free software. Good luck.
  18. Hi there, I have been hosted with Xisto.com for a few months now but unfortunately it doesn't quite have enough space for my entire web site. I have a gallery with thumbnails that are not dynamically generated which means I need the space to host them as well the full size images. Currently I am hosting the thumbnails on another free webhost because I don't have enough room on Xisto.com, and yes I do have an upgraded account. What I am wondering is if it possible for me to have a Xisto.NET account to display the thumbnails used on my Xisto.COM account? The reason for this the current free host I am using to host the thumbnails is not very reliable. Technically I would be using the Xisto.NET account for file storage as I wouldn't have any pages there, just the thumbnail images. This means I would not be showing banners on the Xisto.NET account, but I already have banners and a button promoting Xisto on my Xisto.COM site, because I like to promote such a great service. If you want to view my site to see the banners and button I am using, go to http://www.mudmall.com/.
  19. Here's my entry... what's happening to Homer's donuts?? Disappearing into the grunge? Good luck folks!
  20. Somehow I think there is more to this than meets the eye. Parents, (I am one) don't just do things like that for no reason. I find it very hard to believe they would give away your dogs for no reason or without discussion first. Did you ask them WHY they gave away your dogs? They are your parents and most likely they love you, (most parents do you know, even though it may not seem like it at times) they don't want to see you upset just for the heck of it, there must be a reason behind it. You may not like the reason or agree with it, but when you sit down and think about, it will probably make sense.
  21. You might want to look at this forum topic to better understand how the credit system works. Here's a quote from that page... So when they are talking about quantity, it means the number of posts. A single post of 300 words will earn you more credits that 5 posts of 2 lines. However, if that 300 word post is meaningless, it will most likely earn you a warning. A good 300 word post can earn you up to 5 or so credits so it's worth putting in the effort to make a good post. Just find a topic that interests you and go for it! I think the most number of credits I have earned in a day is about 15, but then I don't anywhere near as much as some people here.
  22. *darn*! Sorry about creating the endless loop. It was close to being right, but one wrong step and it turned into a disaster. Glad you sorted it out in the end, at least I pointed you in the right direction.
  23. Obviosly that person is not very bright. To think that the Admin needs any of that information when it's already available to them is just plain stupid. I guess they were hoping the person they were sending the message to is as dumb as them. Well spotted Plenoptic!
  24. Perhaps you could try something like this: $result=mysql_query("SELECT * FROM $usertable ORDER BY uid DESC");$row = mysql_fetch_array($result);$lvl="<img src='./images/level".$row[permit].".png' border='0'>";while($row){echo "<tr><td align='center'><font class='news_font'>$row[name]</td><td align='center'><font class='news_font'>$row[username]</td><td align='center'><font class='news_font'>$row[function]</td><td align='center'>$row[lvl]</td><td align='center'><font class='news_font'>$row[email]</td><td align='center'><a href='manmem.php?user=$row[username]&req=edit'>Edit</a></tr>";} I haven't tested it, but I think it should work.
  25. These might be something like what you are looking for.
