Mininova Bites The Dust!

Recommended Posts

The movie and music industries worldwide must be celebrating right now! Here's the latest post from the mininova blog:

Hi all,
Today is an important day in the history of Mininova. From now on, we are limiting Mininova.org to our Content Distribution service. By doing so, we comply with the ruling of the Court of Utrecht of last August.

Unfortunately the court ruling leaves us no other option than to take our platform offline, except for the Content Distribution service. According to the verdict (Dutch link) we have to prevent uploads of torrents to Mininova that refer to certain titles or to similar-looking titles. Weve been testing some filtering systems the last couple of months, but we found that its neither technically nor operationally possible to implement a 100% working filter system. Therefore, we decided that the only option is to limit Mininova to Content Distribution torrents from now on. We are still considering an appeal at this moment.

We launched our Content Distribution service in 2007. This service allows producers and artists to easily publish and distribute their content for free through Mininova. The launch of Content Distribution has proven to be a success. Countless content owners have used Content Distribution to distribute their content (e.g. albums and documentaries) for free to millions of users. For example, the Dutch band Silence is Sexy released their complete album on Mininova and received the Interactive Award 2009 for doing so. The Dutch television broadcaster VPRO decided to start using Content Distribution in 2009 in order to distribute documentaries.

We would like to thank you for your support. Especially everyone that contributed to Mininova receives a big thank you! for the effort! We hope to keep welcoming you on Mininova and our other projects (e.g. Snotr, Dispostable).

Thanks! The Mininova staff

I saw a brief report in the newspaper, then looked up the site, and was bemused to see over 6000 comments below the post, all bidding a teary farewell to mininova, which is supposedly the largest torrent tracker in the world after PirateBay (which bit the dust a few months ago). 5 out of every 10 comments had the same question - "Where should we go now?!" This is a really surprising situation and I actually feel sorry for those poor pirates - all their hard work of over 5 years has gone down the drain just like that!

The movie and music industries worldwide must be celebrating right now! Here's the latest post from the mininova blog:

I doubt about that demonoid/ahashare people are still active behind the scenes and pirate bay still have movie torrents with them. So loss mininova doesn't make much difference. Besides that warez world is not just on mininova but also on some porn sites :). So if you don't get torrent here then you'll get torrent from some other place.

I feel sad. :o But i felt very bad when mininova was shut down cause dattebayo was distributing official bleach episodes from mininova and it was very exciting to get each episode from mininova. But now they stopped and only alllowing content distribution from it. Though dattebayo will be back to mininova as content distributor but now they need to have dedicated seeder unlike letting seed through others. So this is sad in some cases but for most of the cases like movie, ebooks and music this is point of celebration.

Could you explain what is Content distribution torrents? I don't like torrents at all but I thought mininova was a site of free flash games.

Content distribution torrents are like promo products. Like ebooks, movie trailers, promotional movies, made for internet movies, tv episodes released with rights etc. There are many things that come into content distribution.

And mininova is not flash game site that one it Miniclip. Where you either get free flash games for download or for some payment.

PirateBay bit the dust? A quick search on it reveals there are 8000 people leeching and 6000 people seeding Microsoft Windows 7. If they bit the dust, they're doing pretty well! I think I used to use mininova.org to download some T.V. episodes I missed. Arrggh! Who will be the next scurvy torrent website to walk the plank?

I am not working with torrents and i am not reading news for sites like this.In my live i have downloaded not so much torrents. So what this says, that we can't get illegal things from mininova.org now? ARGGG these not very good news. But here we are not allowed to talk about warez and illegal things so i am not gonna talk about that.I can see that there are only few torrents now so if i search for windows 7 i got only 10 torrents: translations and tricks/tips.Good move for the web, because that is good, illegal content is not allowed - and now mininova will lose some Terabytes :o There are lots of sites providing torrents links which are working but also there are trackers...PS: If i search for full,i got only full albums instead of full pack with keygens/serials :)

Hi!Mininova.org isn't completely dead. It can still be used for content distribution. If you make videos, music or anything in particular that you would like to share with the rest of the world, you can create a content distribution torrent on Mininova. Pretty much anything that is too large to distribute through a website due to bandwidth limitations can be distributed over torrents. It's legal, it's convenient. It may not be as much fun as pirated stuff though.

never used mininova before, but i see it now as musics and movies torrent tracker? so i guess it was another torrent tracker... which contains terabytes of warez, and now pushed down to the dust :)

PirateBay (which bit the dust a few months ago)

really?just checked there and they seems to do their living fine

I just found out that isohunt is loaded with new torrents which were earlier on mininova. Now that if we populate it and talk about it too much then that site will be taken down as well. So shhhh don't make noise that there are some torrent on that site. :). I hope we find more torrent trackers as alternative to mininova. And yes, Pirate Bay is not at all closed, it is just doing fine. And only thing i have seen is that there is limited amount of torrents are on pirate bay. So people are less searching on that site.Maybe private trackers will rule the web now, you can say subscription based sites will rise.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought TPB and MiniNova were torrent trackers, which basically means that they just track torrents, not necessarily host them. It would make sense that if they were to shut down operations in a few departments that we may lose some tracking of torrents and torrents that are solely tracked by just those trackers, but for the most part, it's business as usual with casual torrent users since most torrents have multiple (or multitudes) of trackers.

Don't get me wrong... it's still a big blow at the PR level and at the seeming fact that organizations are actually doing something about piracy, but to most of us, the real damage won't set in until more popular trackers go down and we start to lose a significant amount of torrents. Maybe this might be the trend, or maybe it stops now since I don't really know of any other "large" torrent trackers besides TPB or Mininova. Demonoid's BEEN down for months, it seems... "permanent maintenance" seems like a quiet way to go if that's what really happened, doesn't it? :)

You're right, those torrent trackers just removing illegal torrents by observing each torrent uploaded. They are still in business by promoting content distribution torrents.

In front page of theirs we can see that they are coming back when the person who is going to backup their data will come back to the position. So i guess they'll come back soon. In between ahashare will be there on mininova's place.

Yes mininova was a really large torrent tracker and that was why it made things easy for everyone - they didn't have to look elsewhere for torrents! According to Alexa, mininova was more popular than TPB. Ever since I read about this incident I've been visiting mininova daily for any change and all I see is hilarious comments by users, some of whom are abusing the content distribution service! Oh well...

I have seen that :o. And some of the comments were very hilarious. People are spamming over there literally. Like there was comment on ebook page as "very good movie must watch no cam". :D. and after reading this i was like what the hell that guy is upto. And on trailer page there was comment like "nice music, keeny g rocks" :). I don't know if people are venting out their frustration or something but i can easily see that it is annoying for them that it's down. I doubt they will be in business for long. I am sure alexa recorded some drop in traffic since friday. That must be the black friday for the company. Now there is going to be more fun on their comment section, i'm gonna watch for some action till they moderate it :D.

Mininova is dead.Is this indicative of a larger trend? I think that the government is starting to crack down on the internet, which is just wrong and gross. I hate that they're making it harder for us to steal! How dare they?Okay, so the entire controversy over this is stupid. There is no reason that this should be an issue. Why should we discuss this?Because we're idiots.Let's cry because we can't steal anymore.
