I have been having some difficulties with a laptop computer that has Win 98se installed. I am going to re-format it and re-install the operating system. I'm not a techie, so I have a question about all this.Can I install windows ME on a system wjich was originally 98se? It is a compaq presario 1230 with a 233 mhz processor, a single usb port, a cd read-only, a wireless card and a 7 gig h/d. Or would you stick to 98se?

Do you have a method for measuring the 'size' of your web site to determine how fast or slow the site will load on various connections? Does it consider the values for the image and css files which have to follow along? And what sizes are considered acceptable?Thank you.

The Firefox 1.7 is a better browser than the Mozilla version that I have been using as well. It is crisper on the display and faster for line speeds. Of course, if you are able to apply the "turbo-charging" techniques described in the tutorial section here at Xisto, it is even better performance.The Tutorial is very easy to follow and it greatly increases the capabilities of the browsers. It even worked on the Mozilla Suite ver 1.7.11, because they are the same engine underneath. So,I am happy with the Mozilla/Firefox product. I hope they continue to supply good stuff at the right price...

Both of the above postings are correct. There are some html tags which can do a few weird thingd if they are included in Forums allowing html. A lot of forums are table-based and do not parse properly when tables are entered as posts. For example, the community forums at ebay get extremely messy when tables are entered correctly and they get down right absurdly messed up if you enter an incorrectly formatted table. Heading tags, too, can be not acceptable. What I did was create a list of tags and (values in those tags) to post to the forum to determine which ones behaved and which ones messed up. Then I entered the list of acceptable tags in to the Admin Control Panel. It resulted in a larger list than what is normally supplied, but far from complete tag list.You also have to consider whether the forum members you are dealing with are knowledgable. If none of them know how to use html, it is senseless to include tags they will never have a use for. IMHO.

I will spare you the details, but, for Future refence, I suggest going to the Admin Control Panel and enabling html before you enable it for a user. It might be that the forum needs to be enabled prior to the user. Does this make sense???

I think I' ve done everything by the book. It was allowed on the forum ACP, it is allowed by user, it seems to be allowed on the posting form, the tag list has been added at the ACP, the preview accepts it , but the posts show the raw tags as part of the post. Is there anything else I need to do?Does the Admin have to allow it? Is it dis-allowed for the Xisto free hosted accounts?Your help is appreciated.

I have been using Mozilla suite with the same browser engine as Firefox for about 8 months as it was reccomended by a pretty knowledgeable friend. The IE security issues were what forced me to switch from IE.After reading a post on this forum last week, I just dowloaded the Opera browser to see if it was any better. Well I can't say it is better because I haven't used it for too long,and it depends on what you are looking for, of course.Both have some distinct advantages. Mozilla is an all inclusive browser, mail, address, calendar coming soon, Composer for editting, etc. Opera has the mail option, but I haven't tried it yet. Takes a bit longer to load then Mozilla, but it seemed to run way quicker. It uses a different caching technique. After seeing the firefox speed up techniques here at Xisto and making those changes, the speed difference is minimal. The thing I am having trouble with is familiaity. When I want to do something in Opera, my mouse instinctively head for the Mozilla click location and it isn't there. I guess I'll just keep trying it before I decide. I'll wait for a while before I vote. One thing for certain, It won't be for IE...

OH! That would do it, I suppose. (like I knew that) But it works in the other browsers a-okay, only in mozilla is it a problem. I'll do your fix and re-check in the morning. What's the odds that the browser preference is an issue here??? And thanks for the pointer. The z-index solution will be the first thing I try because the positioning is a compromise arrangement so that all three browser look similar. Not the same, similar. I would rather not move the #main. I guess I will if I must.

I have a string of anchor tags arranged as a menu bar horizontally on a page. Pretty basic stuff is included in the css to give some colour and rollover colour change.The page links have been in place in the Html code and all are tested and confirmed accurate. This topic has to do with the browser only,( I think). I mention this in case there might be concerns about the anchor tags being correctly coded. Yes, they are good.So I modified the css to get it looking the way I thought was correct for the page in terms of placement, Background colour, rollover effect, etc. I did a 'visual' check of the page using 4 different browsers. Opera, IE6, Mozilla, and another one from the text editor I use (Editplus) which i think is IE based. Not sure. Anyway, back to the problem... There were some differences between browsers, of course, but nothing serious, nothing unacceptable. The page was good to go... so I uploaded the new css page and opened the site using Opera. Results were as per the local test. Ditto for IE6. These browsers were good. When the mouse pointer approaches the boundary of the text, the rollover and link activation occurred just fine and wonderful.Mozilla, however doesn't want to handle the colour change on rollover. The mouse pointer had to be right in the middle of the link and near the top edge of the text to recieve the rollover effect to activate the link. I have been using Mozilla for 8 months or so and I have never seen this effect before today. Can someone tell me what might be causing this? Where do I begin to correct it? It can't be in the html page since it works fine in three other browsers. Or can it ?The page in question is at jlhaslip.trap17.com/index.html. Well, there might only be three, but you got one wrong. Hockey, Lacrosse and Track. Not neccesarily in that order. It depends on the season. Being Canadian there is no doubt that winter is Hockey season. Lacrosse in the summer and Track anytime. Cross Country running was actually my favourite running event. For actual Track competitions that would be translated into the mile and longer events for me. I enjoyed it a lot. It kept me in shape for Hockey and Lacrosse.

So, one week later... How did the course go this week for you? It may take a few weeks to settle in, but did it get any worse?

I opened up my web page with Opera, Mozilla (same engine as Firefox), ans IE6. The Mozilla and IE pages were pretty much identical, but the Opera browser extended the page height, produced space at the top between the header and the menu bar,and forced the top sidebar to be covered by the bottom sidebar (left hand side). So, that raises the question about compliance. Which of thes three are most w3 compliant and which one do you design to? Same old problem... design to MS standards or w3??? Personally, I would like to think that I attaempt to be w3 compliant, but the browser market share that is MS based is huge, so if you run the Opera or Mozilla products, expect some trouble with the presentation. Overall, I liked the Opera browser. some cool features... and quick, too. A bit slow on the start up. Any way to fix that???

Know what I mean? because a have an old, table based page that might work for you... well a mixed bay of a page that got caught in the transition between thinking tables were the slickest thing since sliced bread and now understanding the strength and value of a w3 compliant css page. So, let me know if that would work.

All excellent possibilities. Another thing to check for is a spyware detection pgm that might be scheduled for a time of day when you don't want it to be. Or other processes, so take a look at your scheduled task list. I run an older version of Windows (98se) and the path is : start>programs>accessories>system_tools>scheduled_tasks.Another old flaw with windows is that the msoffice software had a "fast find" utility that would fire up randomly through the day and index all your files. Not just the file names, but the full contents of the files. This caused the processor to slow down at times as well. It never did works too well, anyway. The trick to disabling it was to find the process (I forget where or how) and set the frequency for it to run at some ridiculous number of days. Like 9999 days between runs, so it didn't bother you.If you are running xp or another (read newer) os, this post won't be much help except to show you that whatever it is can be halted.Personally, I would do a scandisk, spyware detection, anti-virus, malware search, then a full clean up (uninstall and delete unused software) followed by a de-frag. If this is a recent phenomenon, have you installed any new software that is keylogging? There is a package available, might be ad-aware by lavasoft that is supposed to be pretty good with those...Hope this provides some insight...

So I went to the first site posted up there, found the meta-tag generator, entered some info , clicked ok (or whatever it said) and got some php code to cut and paste??? What's with that??? Do I include the php code in my web site index page or what? I'm just learning all this stuff, please be patient with me...
