  1. On your newly created Xisto account? Did you delete the /install and /contrib (I think) folders as directed? You need to do this from your hosted account c-panel. Not the one at the forums here. It may not work until you do that. Also, did you Log-in using the correct user-id and password? If you need more advise, you will have to hang on until somebody else shows up. I'm far from an expert... just trying to help.
  2. Kind of wandering here a bit, but just going to make the following point about domain extensions. There are now way more dot org names out there. It used to be reserved for "organisations", but it seems that even individuals are able to use them. Should there be another extension for personal use? I'm thinking I need an extension like: dot ref to let people know that I ref Hockey, or dot gek to say I use a computer too much. LOL
  3. 30 I think. read it somewhere while I was lurking around. Try looking here.
  4. Okay, so how does this sound to everybody...I live in a relatively remort part of Westen Canada. In the middle of the Rockies. It is a beautiful part of the world, for sure. Unfortunately, the cost to ship things in and out of here is expensive by North American standards. Anyways. So the price of gasoline is around $1.229CDN per litre. Sounds cheap? Or is it? There are 3.78 litres in a US gallon, so do the math. That works out to $4.65CDN per US gallon. Still sounds cheap, right?Except the exchange rate is in your favour, so let's do that next. Let's use a factor of about .85. I'm too lazy to go get the detailed exchange rate, but that's close enough. So the price of our gas is now $3.95US/US gallon. Still cheap? Consider that Western Canada is a NET EXPORTER of Crude Oil, Natural Gas, and other byproducts of the PetrpChemical industries. WE HAVE THE PRODUCT!!!! We don't have to ship it in from anywhere, only within the region. We produce enough to ship out to other parts of Canada, the US and the rest of the World. None of our Refineries were shutdown due to the hurricane, yet we are paying the price of those closures. Make any sense to you???

    It's Me

Hey lethal,Welcome to Xisto. I am also relatively new and the experience has been good. I just got hosted, so I can't speak based on a lot of experience, but it looks like a real good place to hang out, discuss stuff with others, and get to help each other, too.I hope you enjoy the stay...
  6. And if you use Mozilla or Firefox as your browser, simply Ctl-U as you are looking at a page on the web will do the same as the rt-click>View Page/Source. Absolutely correct about studying other pages to learn new things. I did it when I first started. Some people are okay with you doing that with their site, others don't like it, but remember that "stealing" the code is not a good thing. The author owns the rights to the code, but most will be okay with you copying their techniques. Just don't steal the code, Okay?Learning Html is good, but pay attention to the CSS part if they teach you that. It will really help to know the css well one you start doing multiple page sites. It lets you format an entire site with just one file. If there are changes to be made to only one line, would you rather open and modify all the html files, or just one? Yes, there are editors whch are capable of doing that, but the multiple occurence editors can also mess a site up bad if you aren't careful.I'm beginning to discover the power of css, and I like it alot.
  7. WOW ! Thanks Mayank That looks fast just sitting there... lol. I am very thankful I can't return a siggy to you because I just don't have the time or the computer to manage that, but if you need a hand with anything I am capable of helping with, I'll be there for you in what ever capacity you need me for... Or if you need a reference about what a terrific job you as Moderator at the other place, I'll sure be willing to speak on your behalf. It was great meeting you there and I look forward to meeting lots of good people here at Xisto as well... Thanks again... friend.
  8. As Biscuitrat says, viewing the source code is one thing, and an excellent way to learn, but copying it to re-use is another matter all together. There are copyright issues invovled. Particularly if they are selling the code. By all means get a Lawyer involved, even if it just to send them notification that you are aware of their activities. On the other hand, I have been quite successful in approaching other authors to ask them to 'borrow' their code. I will not knowingly use another design without asking. Most authors will consent without much negotiation. There are lots of Open Source pages out there that are free, so why steal one?As people get more experienced with their coding skills, they will be less likely to "steal" yours. IMHO, let them view your source. If they learn something from it, that's a good thing.
  9. Both are very nicely arranged and each will have their place. I'll download and inspect them more critically later. Probably learn a thing or two... You must be happy with the reviews.
  10. Okay, I snagged one and it works great. Only thing is that it saves them as gif rather than jpg. If you are alright with that, I'd say go for the download. In the meantime, I'll send you a copy of the before and after for the one I did.HTH
  11. Tried it using Ms office 2000 and it was a disaster... Maybe a newer version would do better, but I don't have it, so... Okay, I'll find a spot to upload it to and let you know... thanks.
  12. You might have the problem solved by now, but I use a pgm named Animation Shop 3 to change background colours to transparent and it works fine for me. It doesn't do Layers like the better Graphics programs, but for what I do with it, it is a great little piece of software. It is available on the web. Google on the name JASC Software. The program was on this computer when I bought it used and I don't know if there are freebies for it...
  13. I like the crisp, clean nature of the site. Too many sites are terribly cluttered up so you can't find stuff. Can you spell anal-retentive???
  14. Hi, just got posted this morning and I' have a project I am working on that I uploaded and would like to get some comments on. <a href="http://jlhaslip.trap17.com/index.html">GDMHA</a> GDMHA The site is for a Minor Hockey Association. A general information web site that links to Hockey related sites and provides each team with a page for own their pictures and comments. Please review and comment. The Layout will change a bit. The "Rams" text is being replaced a graphic logo, for one thing. The background and side bar colours are/might be changed. The forum link might also change to my new Host here at Xisto. I am more interested in your comments regarding the mechanics of it all. The html behind the page, the page structuring, complance issues, etc, so if you notice anything that might be changed, please make suggestions. Thank you... Notice from NilsC: you have to use BBCodes for URL to show up, we have HTML tags turned off for security reason. the BBCode for this would be. [URL=http://jlhaslip.trap17.com/index.html]GDMHA[/URL]

    What To Do

Very difficult situation. I wish your friend all the best, and you as well.I am not religious in many ways, but I do believe there is a force more powerful than Humankind, and I hope and wish they are able to guide you through this situation. I also believe that the challenges presented to us in this live are given to us so that we can grow and become better individuals, not neccesarily by how we deal with them, but be how we grow in spite of them. As thablkpanda said: Godspeed to you and yours.
  16. I use my computer for emails, forums, writing code for websites(html and learning css). But the biggest reason for even owning this laptop is because I needed some drawings done for a jobsite I was working at. It was cheaper to buy this thing and a Drafting software package than buy a complete drafting board and all the rest of it. That was just about one year ago, and I don't know what I would do without it .
  17. Probably only if you rent premises or get so big that you attract attention to yourself. If you maintain a minimal profile, ie: sell mostly on the web, I doubt very much if they would bother you. Have you considered eBay? or other similar sites?
  18. Introduction of jlhaslip Hi everyone. My name here is jihaslip, but call me Jim. I'm a bit of a dinosaur. Over 50 and still learning new stuff everyday. I'm trying to learn html and css to use for my own and a couple of other web sites that I've come to be involved in. Long story... but I enjoy every minute of it, so it is good... I was formerly hosted at a now defunct site (liquidh.com) but they folded up and wandered off, so then I became registered here at Xisto due to a referral from another former liquidh member. Actually, there are several of us here now. Mayank and wild20 I know are active, but I haven't seen domthedude001 here yet, although he was supposed to get registered. Anyway, I have benn registerd for a few months, but there has been a lot of stuff going on in my life lately, so I have not been able to post too much. I think it is time to change that, since I rather enjoy meeting people via the web and the forums I belong to. If any of you have any interest in Hockey (what the Americans call "Ice Hockey"), I would love to hear from you. I've played, coached, and officiated the game for a long time, and look forward to the start of this season as well. So far, my experiences here have been good. I've had to report myself only once so far... LOL, but each forum is different and I hope to remember not to spam or double post and learn to behave myself. The rules that are in effect are so that we can all have a good experience at Xisto, and I think they are reasonable, so I'm looking forward to becoming a helpful member of this forum. Remember to take care of yourself, and others...
  19. Doesn't the center tag need to be closed? like this: <html> <body> <center> ... Under Construction Image Tag here ie:<img src="http://image_name.jpg"> .... </center> </body> </html> And if it is the only file in the web site, why not just name it "index.html" in order to avoid the .htaccess stuff? Another thing I do, as I build sites, is to create a version of this page to use for a dummy link. By renaming this file to something like "underconst.html", as you develop the menu structure, have all of the links for the web site point to this file. Then as you upload the files, there is an active file to point to and you then know that the coding is working properly. When the real file is completed and uploaded, alter the link to point to the new file and your site is bigger and better. Works for me. HTH
  20. I agree that it is a very nicely gone site. I don't know enough about all that search engine stuff, so I can't comment on that, but I suppose if you have a small market and are not keen on further development of your market, then the SEO is not a problem. I further suppose that if your market is Spanish/Argentine then the lack of English is not a problem, either. Cool roll-over effects on the menu / nav bar. That I really like.If you are producing this level and quality of site using tables and i-frames, I look forward to seeing what you will be doing once you find out how much more you can do with CSS. I'm just starting to learn web site design and CSS, too. Maybe you could review my site once I get hosted and uploaded? The only design comment I would like to make is the colours are too dark for my personal preference. It looks good, but it is just that I prefer to use lighter colours in my designs. To each their own.Take care of yourself, and others... it makes the world go round.
  21. Hey Mayank, Good to see you here at Xisto. Nice work on the siggies. I'll get you to do one for me some day, maybe. When are these people going to make you a Mod? If you need a reference, I would be more than pleased to provide one on your behalf. You did a terrific job over at liquidh. Too bad they folded. Oh well, onward and upward. I am quite pleased with Xisto, Now all I need is hosting and I'll be set.Take care of yourself, and others...
  22. Okay, thanks for the input. That is pretty much what I have been doing with this file. Using the pdf version, and linking to it with an anchor tag, so I guess I'll keep on doing it that way. Just checking to see if anyone knew of a better way. Thanks for your time and assistance.
  23. Well, cute. And interesting, at the same time. Is that a Flash production?
  24. How's that done? (please provide an example.) And doesn't that require the client to have the same software? Not everyone has ms office word processing. Acrobat reader is probably more readily available, but it requires that the reader gets "fired up" and is a resource burden, (the file is about 600K),so I was just curious to see if there might be another way to do it.
  25. I love watching Don Cherry on HNIC, but I can not for the life of me find any valid reason to find him on the top ten list of Canadians. Great guy, super personality, and a great Canadian, for sure. Was his entry an attempt by the CBC to boost his ratings? Notice from wassie: Edited as requested
