Heres A Good Reason Why Soldiers Are Dying im beyond angry with it
jlhaslip replied to Saint_Michael's topic in The Vent
Sad. Truly sad. My thoughts are with the families left behind. And I fully support St Mike on this one. I doubt any of those soldiers were told their stint in the Forces would be fun. And I'm pretty sure that nobody was sent to Iraq to have fun. Be aware, stay aware, stay alive. -
In a 'defensive driving' course I once upon a time registered in, the best lesson I learned was to do a three item check before making lane changes or turns. The sequence is: Signal - use your turn signal Mirror - check your mirrors for other traffic Blind Spot - do an 'over the shoulder' check for other traffic that you may not be able to see in your mirrors Most Examiners will also be watching to see how 'aware' you are of the presence of other traffic, so be certain to check your mirrors often and 'scan' the road ahead of you. Unless you are the only car on the road, your situation changes about every three seconds. Be aware of the presence of other vehicles at all times. Most importantly, be calm. Drive slow. Relax. Good Luck to you. Hope this helps. Notice from BuffaloHELP: Edited as reported.

In reference to the "World Series" being an American only thing: Don't the Toronto Blue Jays count? I am Canadian!

Operating System Not Found Error Displayed On Start Up
jlhaslip replied to jlhaslip's topic in Hardware Workshop
Thanks for the info Buffalohelp. I didn't realize my machine was unique in that it doesn't actually have that chip. The way I described it up there was wrong then. Are Compaq's the only machine that use the Master Boot Record on the Hard drive?St Mike - How many Drives have you been through?Neliminat - I remember some DOS from a way back. Like 20 some years ago. It actually does come in handy once in a while. With all the emphasis on GUI's in the last 20 or so years it is not very often required. It was nice to have the background, though. -
Lozbo,No offense taken. I was just explaining my approach to the assistance I supplied.I hope you solve the problem and share the solution here for us to also learn from.Sounds like you are determined enough to find the answer you are looking for.Good luck with it.

Is This Illegal? Music and Internet
jlhaslip replied to fsastraps's topic in Websites and Web Designing
So have a good clean up program handy.Search the Forum for "cclean" and "cleanup". Both good utilities. Biggest difference is that cclean has a regisrtry cleaner as well, so it has a risk included. If you know what you are doing, and backup your registry prior to using it, you will be alright with it.I use cleanup. I can't be trusted with things that cause damage. -
So I've been having some difficulties with my Laptop computer. Not the least significant of them was this problem of not being able to find the O/S. What to do about it? How does the computer not find the Operating System? I know that it is in there someplace, I had just re-installed it, but the BIOS was not able to locate it.On the phone to the Manufacturer's Help Centre. Explain the problem. Real nice guy. Had the answer right handy. Send me an email right away. Good thing I had another machine available, huh? On startup, the powering on of the machine triggers a process whereby the very beginnings of your operating system are read from a small chip. These instructions are required to find the operating system and your hardware and link up all the pieces and parts, like drivers, to assist with all the inner workings and carrying ons that happen deep inside.Seems when this process is disturbed, all the linking pieces aren't found and connecting properly, and the system won't startup because the computer is not smart enough without all of this information. So, how do you reset the process back to the 'default' settings and continue on your way with a fully operational machine? Well I never knew this before, but on my particular machine (Compaq) , tapping the F10 function key resets the BIOS and the computer will then be able to find its way and gather all the things it deems neccesary for operation as per your configuration. Wow, that simple. Tap a button until it either works or it doesn't. That is how to reset the Bios to its default setting. Once the Bios screen appears, though, you have to reset the clock and calendar before you proceed. Use the arrow keys and the numeric keypad. Because the system isn't set to recognize the mouse, the keyboard is the only input device you will have.Sorry this article isn't more technical, but I am not a technical kind of guy. And like most users I know, all that techy stuff gets real confusing when the alphabet soup language that pervades the Computer industry are tossed around. (acronyms - that's the word I needed). Two lessons come out of this posting. First, this is how to reset your BIOS, and second, just a reminder to all the techy types, that you don't need to use all those acronyms when you are talking about computers. I only used one -- BIOS -- Binary Input Output System. Or something near like that. I might have been sleeping by the time it got explained in class.

I caught that, too, before I got to your posting...

Lozbo, We are only trying to assist you with this problem. Often the answers provided will give you enough information for you to help yourself. One of the best learning techniques is to "seed" an answer and have you find the balance of the solution. Learning by researching the topic and doing it yourself is a better lesson learned. Given the small amount of information in your first post, I thought you would be able to complete the answer based on the information I had given. Apparently not. Does my last reply help? The one with the span tags? Or maybe I am not understanding what it is that you are asking?

or add the background colour to the floated elements and have each of them share the screen width. Like this: <div> <span style="float: left; width: 50%; background-color: #fff000"> left </span> <span style="float: right; width: 50%; background-color: #000fff; text-align: right;"> right </span> <p style="float: left; width: 50%; background-color: #000fff"> left </p> <p style="float: right; width: 50%; background-color: #fff000; text-align: right;"> right </p> <span style="float: left; width: 50%; background-color: #fff000"> left </span> <span style="float: right; width: 50%; background-color: #000fff; text-align: right;"> right </span> </div> It worked with both paragraph and span tags when I checked it. Not certain what you will see in your browser, though. Might have to reduce the width a bit. Like 45% or something, depending on how the page margins are set for the rest of the page and how you want it to look.

Here is how I would add background color to a 'floating' element: <div style="padding: 2px; float: right; font-weight: bold; font-size: 18pt; font-family: georgia; background-color: #ffffff; color: brown;">Web Site</div> This is in-line styling. For use in an Html document on a class, the html and style sheet entries would become something like : html on your page:<div class="back-colour">Web Site</div>and the css in your syle sheet file:.back-colour div {padding: 2px; float: right; font-weight: bold; font-size: 18pt; font-family: georgia; background-color: #ffffff; color: brown;} I didn't test the css and class, only the in-line. I think it will work as displayed, though. My ff browser is not available (hasn't been since I did a win98se re-install. It has no Internet connection). I checked it inline with IE and it worked. lozbo, Clear your cache? Or add this meta tag to the html page until you have it behaving properly. <meta http-equiv="expires" content="0" /> This meta tag should expire this entry in your cache so the next viewing will show the changes you entered. Otherwise you run the risk of picking up the prior version which will not include your altered html or css. Delete the meta tag from the html page after you get the coding correct, or the page will never cache. Hope this helps. Notice from BuffaloHELP: Merged as reported.

What browser are you using for this? I also have trouble with floats using older IE.I'll check some 'floats' I use and post back later.

Lots of coding help available on this Froum already. Use this Link and see for yourself.

And there are lots of 'paid' hosting services that don't give you the same features as the Xisto does. And you get to meet others interested in the same topics as you. You might also learn some new stuff along the way... safe journey to you.

My Hard drive is getting a bit "cluttered". Is there a utility available which will pop-up a long file description to remind you about what the file is for and when it was created? It would be nice to have it so when you hover on the file icon a "tool tip" containing the info would display. Kinda force the computer to remember stuff you should not have to remember about.

The second pronounciation has to do (to me at least) with genetics. See all about it here...

Well sorry to read that there is trouble in paradise... Been there, Done that... On a positive note, as you move along in the life process, you will be able to look back at this experience as a new beginning... not as an end. Where you go to next would not have been possible without this occurring first. Make sense?

Saint-Michael 2-1But it was not an easy decision. Both have some very good points about them. And they each have their not so good points.

I don't have a source reference for that quote, but it is not exactly correct. If you have ever had TWO women mad at you at the same time, you'll know what I mean...

Htaccess To Block Bots How do you block bots and spiders?
jlhaslip replied to jlhaslip's topic in Web Hosting Support
well, as it turns out, this was all "much ado about nothing".I banned the suspected IP addresses, used the Robot Link above and then one of the forum users couldn't sign-in. Turns out her satallite connection gets re-directed to an US based facility, so the Bandwidth usage was legitimate.Just another lesson to be had here. -
Well, that was just one of several attempts to log-in that failed. In the end, your suggestion was the one that worked, but I don't know why because I had tried it several times prior. And several other versions a bit different that failed as well, so I can't explain why it ended up working this time.* Wonderful * devices we play with...!
