  1. NOD32 or Kaspersky both run well on low spec computers. The key is knowing how to properly customize your AV settings. Merely choosing the default settings won't cut it. Since you'll be installing the AV in a networked environment, I suggest that you buy kaspersky open space security.
  2. That's odd. The "original" themes, apps and other add-ons for your phone are hard-coded on the chip when it left the factory, so they will naturally be restored no matter how many times you master reset/restore to factory defaults your phone. However, if the apps you're referring to were added by you or your network provider after the phone was purchased, then they won't be restored. You can try flashing the firmware of your phone using a third-party software (like JDflasher).
  3. It could possibly be the actuator arm, but since a hard disk have other mechanical parts it's hard to tell for sure. Plug the HD back in and go to your CMOS settings. See if the BIOS recognizes your HD. If it does but doesn't appear in your "my Computer" or device manager (am assuming you're using Windows), try using a live disc and see if it is able to recognize the HD. You can try the linux distros like knoppix, slax to mount the disc and recover the files. If you're using XP, hiren's boot cd has file recovery utilities you can use, so does winPE (all freeware).
  4. It depends on the kind of video watermark you have to remove (text, logo, is it static, etc...), what is the video format as well as the quality of the encoded video? Also, most video editors add an invisible watermark aside from the visible one. It's hard, but it can be done. And with a bit of LUCK and skill, nobody will even notice that a watermark was removed. No altered video quality, smearing and the like. After effect and even virtualdub can be used. And pardon me if I may ask but is this for legal reasons? Because there's a reason why people watermark/copyright their work.
  5. Firefox is my browser of choice. Browsing speed aside, it is more dynamic compared to the other internet browsers around. For many firefox users, I think the main sticking point is the thousands of plugins you can use to customize as well as enhance the user's browsing experience. With regards to the "fastest" browser, chrome takes it IMO.
  6. When it comes to heuristics and better malware detection, I give kaspersky the edge over NOD32. The good thing about NOD32 is that it's light on system resources and has an above average detection rate. If you're a long time Kaspersky user and you switch to NOD, you tend to get paranoid because NOD doesn't seem to be doing anything in the background, that's how light this AV is. But it does good job at blocking malware infections.
  7. I think it's a bit unfair to rate a file host's "performance" if you use their service as a free user. If you upgrade to a premium account (say rapidshare, megaupload, filefactory), you'll certainly won't see slow download speeds, captchas, waiting time, etc... I rate rapidshare as one of the best, simply due to the massive amount of files they host as well as their cheap premium rates.
  8. If you're a starting web designer, try to take things in a stride. Don't immediately expect nor attempt to make websites that are tad too technical. Even if you already have a web template in hand, if you don't have a sound understanding of (x)html and css expect to have difficulty editing that template. My advice is to familiarize yourself with the foundations of web building (html and css). Don't fret if you have difficulty at the beginning. We all have to start somewhere. For basic designs you'll get by with html and css alone. Then from there you will soon know what other stuff you need to learn without having to ask somebody because sooner or later, you'll realize that there are things that css alone can't accomplish. It wouldn't hurt to learn javascript or jquery maybe, or a couple of web programming languages (php, etc,) if you want to create dynamic content, or perhaps learn cms (joomla or drupal). As for me, before I start to make a site, I try to brainstorm for ideas first. That way I have a general idea on the site design and content. I usually have pen and paper in hand for the preliminary design. Once I'm through that, I create the images (banners, logos and what nots) through photoshop. Then I code the semantics with dreamweaver then eventually finish the overall site design with css.
  9. Hi mpopkin50, welcome to Xisto. For your video game website, you have to decide if it will be a general review site or you'll mainly be reviewing specific video games (ie; PC only, console-based, etc...). You can also check out other game review sites like gamespot.com or ign.com so that you can get a general idea on what kind of content you can include for your site. Are you the one making the reviews?
  10. There is no effect/harm on your battery if you use the power cable for extended periods. In fact it prolongs your battery life because the power will mainly be from the AC outlet. With regards to battery maintenance, make sure to otimize your netbook's power and battery management settings. Make a profile to fit your netbook usage habits.
  11. Voted. My second favorite is deadmad's design, the choice of text is a bit out of place though. Goodluck to all.
  12. Sometimes the reason why most novice web designers say its difficult to make websites is that they try to make a big impact on their very first design. Instead of starting with a simple yet functional site, they try to make a flashy and technical design which is beyond their skill Try to start slow and then build your knowledge from there. First start with (x)html. Once you get to fully understand the basics and theories behind it, starting learning CSS. Then you can start learning the rest. As most have already pointed out, work with samples and templates. Simply reading ebooks and tutorials isn't enough. It's not a daunting task, it's a matter of planning ahead and knowing what you really want. If the website you're planning to make is just a one-time deal, then using free online website editors is enough. But if you want to make a career out of this, then you have to really commit yourself. You don't have to enroll to courses specialising in graphics and webdesign... Use google, knowledge at your fingertips.
  13. Definitely agree. It's so easy to lure wifi users to connect to an unsecured network. They think they have found a free access to free internet. Unfortunately they're not aware that the admin is sniffing on their packets. One example is that of Cain's man-in-the-middle attack, the ARP poisoning feature. You can intercept their traffic and soon enough end up with a collection of usernames/passwords to their online acounts.
  14. If you're trying a new software, it's best to read the reviews of those who have tried it first. softpedia and download.cnet are good sites to start with. I don't necessarily download the freewares from them, I mostly check the review on a particular piece of software whether or not it's worth downloading it.
  15. If you guys want to extract the vid or audio of your youtube downloads (or any flv file for that matter), you can try FLV Extract (lightweight and freeware). The good thing about this simple program is that it doesn't re-encode the extracted vid/audio. An yep, you don't even have to install this to your pc. Just extract the rar file, drag and drop those flv files and you're set. You can get it at moitah.net
