  1. If only Wikipedia always came on disks and Encarta given free, then it would be suitable to compare these two. How about Britannica and Encarta? I think it would need separate topic for this.Microsoft Money... It seems lots of organisations are going the opensource way or custom services as per their needs. Few years back, may be a decade ago, it was all Microsoft. Today everything has changed, lots of rapid growth in every field. I mean to say, in those days MS didn't have the competition which is being seen today. And today MS is already utilizing lots of its manpower in important things like Windows.
  2. Gutenberg even offers thousands of ebooks to be downloaded in ISO fromats to burn them on disks. I think I can hardly read ten of them in the coming years, then having these thousands of ebooks is just for collection, may be to distribute it among our friends. Visit http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ fro more information. And as they clearly say it, that the ebooks offered in the CDs are atleast 80 years old: For those who cannot download them, they even mail free copies of the CD/DVD. Also, there is an option to customize the ebooks in a ISO and then download them: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/
  3. @nirmaldaniel Reading the last sentences of your post, I guess you are interested in running and experimenting your own server, which is accessible on the internet so anybody can access your hosted site. There is no need to hold the IP address by not switching off the router. You can even point your domain to the site hosted on your PC. For this you need a way to make your IP address look permanent. This is usually done by a program given by freedns service providers. It basically points your current dynamic Ip to the subdomain provided by them which in turn points to your domain. You can visit these sites for more info: http://freedns.afraid.org/ http://www.dnsexit.com/Direct.sv?cmd=dynDns https://www.zoneedit.com/
  4. Actually I don't need any programs to make myself anonymous on my own website. If I use those it will make my job of identifying my own hits even more difficult. The point is not hiding but knowing my sites stats better.
  5. How can I prevent logging of my own IP on my website's awstats log? The problem is, my internet connection has a dynamic IP address, so there are bunch of my own IP's showing in the log. Although, they start with the same number, I can't actually ignore all of them as mines. Even though some of them start with a number same as mines, they actually are coming from 1000's of Km away from my city. I checked those on ip2location.So, is it possible to have a feature in Awstats, where the IP logged in each time in Cpanel (that is my IP) is ignored in Awstats? I basically don''t want to see my bandwidth, hits, browser, OS data in the logs.I just now signed up for Google Analytics. I am waiting for the bots to visit it and collect the data. The problem is, I have many static pages, so entering the javascript code in each page is a herculean task. Moreover its difficult to manage, which pages have the code and which of them doesn't.Is there any better solution or script than Awstats?
  6. Instead of getting the DVD, we can get the CD distro and then install the required packages as we wish. Isn't it possible? Is there anything essential missing in the distro which is there in DVD and which cant be installed if we don't install DVD? I got the the 690 MB download and will be trying it out soon on another PC. It will be helpful for me to learn by having two linuxes installed (Ubuntu and Fedora) on separate PC's.
  7. I don't know exactly, but I think it was workstation. I tried it years ago, when it came in a magazine DVD. I think there was also VM player. I dont know what it did. But anyway I am now happy with Virtual Box. Its doing the perfect job for me.
  8. @yordan: Oops I didn't, but anyway I backed up all my data on portable HDD, so even if something goes wrong later I can go for complete format. Also, I have an old P3 with win 98 just in case, if I have some important work to do. With Ubuntu installed, now I am going to install AMP on it. Just hoping everything goes fine. I didn't knew about the opensource Clonezilla, thanks for telling that, would be useful in future. And another thing in Ubuntu is that all the drivers like blutooth drivers comes pre installed, I just switched on bluetooth on my smart phone and there it got connected.@akashi: I think language won't be a problem, as I only use English on computers. Winblows.. Are you supporting to remove the word 'windows' from internet once and for all?
  9. Thanks akashi. I think now I will make a complete switch to ubuntu now. I am now familiar with many basic things like browsing, using apps, and setting things up. I also tried wine, Its useful to run occasional 'windows only' programs.
  10. I once installed Fedora 10 on a virtual box, it was something like blue theme, I couldn't understand much as I could in Ubuntu. Fedora 11, Also yesterday, that is 10th, the new version of Linux kernel 2.6.30 was released after many RC's. So does this mean they will be incorporating the latest kernel in Fedora 11 through updates soon, or will they update it in the next version?
  11. So this means all the settings and files stay intact? Like all the settings and installation of apache, php, mysql, will they be there when I update? OR is it all reset?

Do these sites help to get unique visitors? I always thought that it is useless to signup for these things, because the link would be visited through these websites, so I would rather see the website in the my visitors log rather than the Ip of the clicker. And hence would be full of those referrer sites only. And I also heard that doing this way may actually reduce the google's blessings on a site.
  13. I think the online download of packages is a good thing in Ubuntu. It actually helps a lot for the beginners as they can see all the packages in a neat search able directory and install and play with any of those. And also many newbies wouldn't know how to install a package correctly (including me) so having such a system is great.I heard that to update ubuntu to newer versions we have to completely reinstall the new version. Is it true?
  14. I switched to linux (not completely, dual boot) because I wanted to learn and setup Apache MySQL PHP and also wanted to setup sendmail option so that I could learn to create my own complete personal website server. I haven't succeeded in setting everything yet as I am still unfamiliar with many of the basic things in Linux and this is making the learning process a lot slower. I am watching videos to learn them, there are many great ones out there.
  15. But thats only a free trial. Anyway the standard edition is more than enough. And I need 15 email accounts so, I was asking whats the difference between xisto doing it for us and we doing it ourselves.
  16. Thanks a lot xpress. I knew about google offering free service for webmasters, I once got to the free service link about a year ago, but at that time I was too ignorant to bookmark it. And now when I got domain I was searching for it like anything. There seems to be only paid link and 30 days trial. Thanks for the link. It seems that there is not much information on free service. And about the 10 google email accounts being offered here, what is the difference between setting on our own and having xisto setup for me? If I do it on my own, I get can get more features and can setup even more email account right?
  17. May be an essay or tutorial with around * (I read the rules, sorry) words may earn you a dollar. I don't know, I am just guessing. But this is a nice system of earning for posts. And some very talented, geniuses here. And also this the cleanest forum I have ever seen with general discussions apart from tech related subjects.
  18. Yes, the upgrades are free. The Logic Pro has much more space and bandwidth, but I saw that its just a customized version of the logic plan. I didn't knew this before. Its far better to customize what we want, like I would never need 100 addons, 100 subdomains etc, so customizing the plan can eek out the best price for our needs. Also in the Logic Pro package we need to pay setup fee of $9+ if you choose monthly payment option (free if chosen to pay yearly). So it is the best option to customize the Logic plan itself than going in for the Logic Pro plan. What do you think? Actually it is the Google mail for domains (under email solutions) which is setup for free, they setup 10 gmail accounts linked to the website. The Google Apps and DNS configuration costs one time $15 setup fee. By doing this I can integrate the services offered by Google into the website. Although you could do it separately by yourself. And the custom nameserver costs one time setup fee of $5. Custom nameserver means, you will get your name server like ns.mydomain.tld which would redirect to the original nameserver. But to this we need to first register ns.mydomain.tld at the domain registrar. You will also need two static ip addresses, one for primary namserver and other for secondary. Usually we can do that by going to our domain registrar and entering the nameservers with IP addresses. The exact process seems to differ from host to host. So paying a one time fee wouldn't be a problem for me. I have some more questions. What is this email forwarding during domain order which costs 2$? Is it a required if we choose the forwarders user@yourdomain option in the email solution of the hosting?
  19. Yes, it is called windows readyboost component in vista which does that boost. Any kind of flash storage can be used. I think it was included in windows vista, to promote the usage of Vista during its release back in 2006. Because it asked for almost whole system upgrade who had normal PCs at that time and everybody was talking about the amount of RAM required to run the Aero. But RAM's have become very cheap today and almost all of the systems bought these days have minimum of a gig of memory. Having more definitely helps for playing all those high-end graphics games.
  20. Adjusting for best performance makes windows much much faster, it removes all the effects, transitions etc, in the process it also removes the precious xp theme. If you don't like this you can once again get back to xp theme (or any other), you can change it in display properties (right click in desktop>Properties). Now, the settings previously applied still remain in effect, and you also get back the lost theme.Unchecking the startup programs will of course speed up, but care should be taken not to uncheck any essential startup programs. As advised google for more info about the names to see which program they startup. There are also lots of built in system services starting up during windows startup. Although most of them are essential for the smooth running of the operating system, but there are also some services which doesn't have any use and just sit there hogging system memory also. You can go to services by going to Control Panel>Administrative Tools and double click the services shortcut. For the services you want to be stopped during startup change the startup type in the properties to "Disabled". Now they won't startup and run hogging system resources. Detailed description is given at the right panelm but you may google for more info if you're not sure about a service.
  21. We get a lot of emails everyday, from friends, relatives, newsletters, automatic notifications, and of course spam. Most of us use free email services like Gmail, Yahoo mail, Hotmail etc. These services offer many great features to manage emails, set filters, with very good spam filters. But do we use them to the fullest extent? Now you would say, just because those features are present, its not necessary to use them. But, just think, by using those feature one could actually save time and improve productivity. Here I present you some tips and tricks to manage emails more efficiently. Gmail being the most popular free email service, I would consider that you are using it too, and also because some of the features are not available in other email services, but rest of them can be used in others too. So here we go. Some of them may seem too basic, wacky or just going too overboard, but nevertheless they help to some extent. 1] Use multiple email accounts: Having multiple email accounts set for different purposes, helps you easily distinguish what type of emails are present in a particular account. You can use one email for sending and chatting with all your friends and relatives, one for all online and offline bank accounts, one for all notifications and newsletters, and one for spam. You could better categorize depending on your requirements and usage. 2] Managing multiple email accounts: Now managing such multiple email accounts can be a daunting task. Fortunately there are many ways to manage them. a] Email clients can be very useful for this. Thunderbird being the most popular free software, it has many basic features and some nice time saving features too. IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) feature offers a great way to access and delete emails in real time. And the good thing is gmail offers it for free. b] Email clients are great way to manage, but the features offered in the browser interface and looks are taken off by the email clients. So, how do you access multiple email accounts in browsers: First method is to use portable version of the popular browsers. You can download them from portableapps.com. Now, you can have multiple copies of them in a safe place in a drive. Configure each of the browser with one each email account and check mark auto login or if the browser offers password saving then use it. Now to login to these accounts you just open the particular copy of the portable browser and it opens right away into the inbox. For gmail accounts using portable Google Chrome would be the best option, you can actually make the portable version of the latest version by using a program which you can download here: http://portableapps.com/node/19307 Second Method is for Google chrome users. It has an incognito mode which basically lets you surf web without leaving any trace on PC like cookies, history etc. And the cookies during the browsing time are stored in separate folders for each of the incognito window you open. So you can easily have multiple email accounts open at the same time. But a little Note from gmail: Even though I use multiple instances of gmail, the accounts didn't got locked up ever. But if you think you want to use this method extensively then you need to think a bit before going for this. 3] Using Folders/Labels effectively: Now moving a bit offtopic but still relevant, most of the email service offer this feature offer labeling/folder feature. In yahoo and hotmail its known as folders and in gmail its known as labels. Set some filters to automatically send messages to particular folders or apply labels. Lets the example of my gmail labeling for Xisto: You can assign multiple labels, so that you would easily know if you have a mycent update, by just seeing the label unread count in the right side. 4] Chatting from multiple email accounts: Almost in every account you may have added chat buddies to chat with. You can use many of the portable chat clients to chat with buddies in multiple email accounts. Or if you use use multiple chat client like digsby then you can easily do that. You can also open multiple gtalk clients. There is a little neat trick for this. In the gtlak shortcut properties ( You can find it on desktop or Start>Programs), you can open by right clicking the shortcut and selecting properties. Now add "/nomutex" without quotes at the end of target. There is a space before "/nomutex. Now click OK. Now you can double cli"ck that shortcut icon to launch multiple gtalk windows. You can login into each of them with different accounts and chat. Also you will receieve updates of new emails as and when they arrive. Useful feature and an advantage over using other clients.
  22. Yes virtual box is really useful for testing things and even doing some risky tasks. Like you can safely download some unknown windows stuff on ubuntu running on Virtual box. Talking about VMware and virtual box, the latter is very easy to use with wizard to setup everything easily. I once tried vmware, after installing I was clueless on how to setup, and then I didn't spend much time with it. So virtual box is the best, we can even run multiple OS simultaneously, although the max I could run was 3.
  23. Some updates from free domain world: .tk now doesn't put ads, yeah those big banners at the top are no more. uni.cc are back up, thanks for a member here for letting us know about that. @fermin25: No co.nr don't have dns control and they probably never will. For dns one you can use uni.cc domains. If you want dns control for path forwarding, co.nr offers that.
  24. 5000, five thousand docs per minute. That is like flipping a book and its done with scanning. Amazing, the hardware would be really high end to process something like that. They also need good hard disks to write data that fast and efficiently. Hope somebody may soon suggest a better solution on digitizing those texts. I don't know, I am referring to something totally other thing here, you can have a look of gutenberg scanned copies. May be somebody in those forums may help.
  25. Nice layout. I liked the image slider. It looks more better when they snap through quickly. Rather than some image sliders which keep moving slowly while you hover hover the arrows. May be you can sightly improve the visual appearance of drop down menu on nav. And I too can't read Albanian, so can't comment on the content. You can increase the spacing for the text a bit. Overall the site looks nice. And some images are too graphic, may be you can put a warning at the footer saying so.
