  1. Being a bit melodramatic there aren't you? Your rights in no way shape or form have been altered or infringed upon by business practices at Comcast. There is no one preventing you from switching to another provider of internet service. Not a single person has prevented you from expressing an idea or opinion as evidenced by your post. Perhaps the above was typed tongue in cheek but really unless i missed something in constitutional law there is niothing in the US constitution that gaurantees unlimited internet access. I would be far more concerend about the "stimulus" bill that tries to back door "Net nutrality" into law.
  2. Simply saying that something is under copyright does not make it so. I have numerous places where some one places a copyright notice on a template they got from somewhere else wich is often in violation of the templates license more often than not. Content, if original, is certainly protected under copyright law but a web design would be nigh impossible to prove there was any violation in a court of law. And yes I fully support copyright law.
  3. Of course the internet can be destroyed. Anything can be destroyed except energy. The internet is merely a series of physical connections. Google can't be hacked, that's just silly.
  4. I have been tasked by a buddy with upgrading his PC. His Pc is too old to really upgrade much 2.8 Ghz proc, AGP etc. Sure we could hunt down a slightly better processor maybe add some ram or a newer video card. But, in truth for the same or near enough the same price I am convinced we could basically rebuild his PC. The price tag we are looking at is around 200 dollars US. First I am looking at what he does have that can still be used. He has a 150 GB SATA hard drive so we will not need to purchase one for now. He has a nice mid ATC case with good fans in it. He also has optical drives currently a DVD-r and a CD-rw. Those will do for now as well though they are IDE. We can hold on to and use these parts as they are in fine working order and will keep our current cost down. They are also easy to upgrade at a later date. One of the goals I am striving for is to make the PC very upgradeable. The other goal of course is for the machine to really upgrade what the friend has currently. Use wise the toughest thing the PC does is run World of Warcratf and City of Heroes. We would like to be able to run some newer games as well though not heavy duty FPS games like Crysis, more like some of the newer MMOs such as LotR or Champions online. Thus, here are the parts I am looking at for him at this point. First off I am looking at an Intel e5200 processor. Sure there are faster processors out there and there are certainly cheaper processors out there. Price to performance ratio though I think it is one of the best processors on the market and it fits in the budget. For the Mother Board there a bunch of options, of course. Given the budget and the goals in mind I am looking for something that offers maximum usability now and upgradibility later. The board I would like is one from Gigabyte. This board is inexpensive (not cheap) yet offers exactly what I need. One of the top considerations is that I wanted a GeForce chipset. The nForce graphics will certianly be a step up from the old ATI (9200?) graphics currently used and the Pcie x16 slot is there to upgrade further. The board also has an IDE controller so that the older optical drives can still be used. On new egg the combo of the two comes to 141.98 with out shipping. that leaves $60 for a 2GB stick of ram and a new power suplly since the old one won't cut it. Conveniently New egg has a combo deal for a 2 gb Kingston stick of ram and this 500 wattpower supply for $66. So that total goes to $208 with out shipping. Not the perfect PC yet but will certainly be a good machine plus it is massively upgradeable. The ram can be increased and a dedicated video vard can be added, obviously. With an after market CPU cooler we would also be able to overclock the CPU. The solid Gigabyte mother board gives us that option. Of course even cheaper would be this barebones kit from CompUSA . A good kit but the MB is not as trong and I know nothing about the 450W power supply in the case. Your thoughts, what would you do differently? What parts would you suggest? Just remeber the budget is about $200 US it needs to be better than what we have (easy) and needs to be open to upgrades. Provide links where you can.
  5. While a CPU/GPU hybrid may work for a laptop I do not see the idea working for desktops. One of the advantages of a separate GPU even for on board graphics like nForce is the flexibility it affords mother board manufacturers. This is especially true for manufacturers such as Dell who are able to offer the same CPU in different models with varying graphics capabilities from Intel's (useless) on board video or Geforce chip sets as well as offering Pcie slots. Another potential pitfall I see is that it seems that graphics technology accelerates a bit faster than CPU technology. I can not imagine AMD/ATI being able to spend the time and costs to update one side of a chips function. Conversely they might be stuck with chips that run at current clock speeds but end up a generation or two being in graphics capabilities.I hope AMD still strives forward and remains a competitive alternative to Intel in the x86 market. Competition is always good.
  6. You do realize that you are responding to a two year old posting, right? Or was that a joke of some sort?
  7. He literally means adding ?something=something to the URL Thus youtube would be http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. As to the topic itself, yes, there are ways to bypass just about anything. However for anything that can be bypassed there ways of stopping by passes and ways of detecting when thing are bypassed. Of course there are ways around the other ways and so on. It can be an endless battle. To the point though: there is a reason network admins put up these sort of blocks. Is you tube really so important that it HAS to be viewed from school? Really I am curious about this.
  8. AS far as the distance is concerned 200 ft is not that far and should not be much of a concern. as far as the material of the building is concerned if you have a window in the shop that faces the house put the antenna there and you should be good. Here is simple test to see if you are going to have a problem. Take a cordless phone from the house to where in the shop you want the antenna. If you can use the phone from that location then you should not have a problem with a wireless connection. Check to see if your phone says 2.4 Ghz on it. Most currrent cordless phones are and typically say so on them. This is the same frequency that wireless G and N operate on.
  9. That was a great video. I would like to know if they told the people that it was KDE and what their response was.
  10. An interesting idea. Nvidia could probably make a good CPU. They have been creating GPU's for some time and as stated I guess the transition to an x86 processor would not be that huge of a leap technology wise. I was surprised when Nvidia first started making chipsets and was a bit skeptical at first, now Nvidia's are my preferred. I would hope that if they decide to go this route that they are successful. I would hate to see the company invest as much as would be needed into making CPUs, advertising them and the like to fail. A heavy investment that did not work out could kill the entire company.
  11. One of the greatest new features in CS4 is the ability to easily rotate the "paper" like Painter does. If you use Photoshop to create art in directly, especially with a stylus, this is a huge improvement. There are some other improvents as well for the digital artist though I do not remember what they are off the top my head. Now for my disclaimer on just about every PS thread: If you are not creating graphics professionally you do not need Photoshop.
  12. On a windows system, (really the only OS where uninstalling programs actually does not completely uninstall them,) I typically use the one provided by windows. But, when I install an application I always monitor the install so that I know every change that was made to the system. Then when I so desire I am able to run a check against the install list to be sure any changes made by an install were reversed by an uninstall. I have a brother who writes or rewrites install packages for distribution on very large networks (thousands to tens of thousands of PC's). It really is interesting how something like a 5 MB patch even can made 1MB or less.
  13. I have a close friend who is actually afraid of rabbits. I do realize how incredibly ridiculous that sounds and the interesting thing is that he does as well. To sit down and discuss it he is keenly aware that rabbits pose no real threat to him. But, if he actually sees a rabbit he freezes in terror. I knew him for a couple years before I actually saw his response. It was odd to see a full grown man afraid of a rabbit. My friend does not know where the fear comes from. He does remember seeing Monty Python and the Holy Grail at an early age though he is not sure that was the litmus.
  14. I have been an instructor for nearly 20 years now thus have taught a lot of students. Teaching others is a requirement in our class to even test for black belt. For us achieving a black belt is not just about having the physical skills needed to perform the technique and kata. It also about knowledge, understanding, leadership and maturity. If one can do a kata well it is obvious they know the kata. to teach a kata well one has to understand it.
  15. There are numerous reasons that your site could be running slowly. Of course there could always be hardware concerns. Your statement seems to indicate that the database and the web server are on the same box. Checking your hardware's performance logs could reveal problems. Though there may be hardware issues I am going to guess that the performance issues are more likely to be a result of poor database and/or query optimization. First take a look at your database design and determine of you have followed the rules of normalization or normal form. Then have someone else take a look at your data model, it never hurts to get a second opinion. Remember you can nad should check up on the health of your database as well. If you have all your data normalized and modeled well take a look at your queries. With MySQL you can append the the EXPLAIN statement to the front of a SELECT query to see how well it is running. If your SELECT queries are not searching indexes then you will be able to determine where you need indexes based on the information given. Be sure to read the documentation topic about optimization.
  16. In the case of professional athletics it seems that the term overpaid should be kept in context. Think of things in the terms of basics economics. Every professional sports team is a product. It is the job of the owners and managers or whoevers f that or organization to make a profit. Teams that win more make more money. If I own a burger joint my product is obviously going to me hamburgers. so for my product to sell I have to pay a certain amount for materials I have to buy buns and meat. There is only a certain amount by which I can control how much my materials are going to cost me. Perhaps I have a cheaper burger that taste good but, Bob Burger Bar across the street is buying better beef and better buns and makes a burger that tastes great. Though his may cost a bit more he is still getting the business. So I may need to buy some better ingredients that the half stale buns from the outlet store. In the same way athletes are the materials that make a sports team. Even if they seem to make an obscene amount of money for what they do they are simply the material for that product. Athletes that help win games or simply put people in the seats are a higher value product. Soccer (Football) player David Beckham made a ton of money to go play for the L.A. Galaxy. The team still was bad but his name alone put enough people in the seats to pay for him. In the same way Bret Favre helps win games and gets fan excited to see the games. Thus he is an expensive material but one that pays off. Take in account as well supply and demand. Unlike the bun example I used earlier there is only one Bret favre or Micheal Jordan or whoever. There are only a handful of top Quaterbacks in the world. The best materials for your product cost the most. In the same way event tickets costs are subject to the law of supply and demand. Every stadium has a finite number of seats available. Those seats get sold at a rate that coincides with the teams ability to sell them. Sometimes those rates goup as material costs up or demand increases and sometimes (rarer) they go down. Ticket costs for the Devils Rays in Tampa went down when they could not get people in the ball park. So athletes get paid a bunch of money but still less than the profit margin of the teams in question. I think sometimes people gripe of salaries more out of envy than anything else. But, that is another topic entirely.
  17. Sorry, but that is not entirely accurate. The McDouble is Exactly the same as the double cheeseburger with the exception that it uses one slice of cheese rather than two. There are several reasons that McDonald's continues to succeed. One of the main reasons is consistency. Wherever you go in the U.S. and most of the world McDonalds' food taste the same. As a corporation they go to great lengths to make sure this is true. Though menus may vary from location to location the basics remain the same and taste the same. Another reason is name recognition. They have built themselves up to the point where the term "fast food" means Mcdonald's and vice versa. Surely there are other places but ask most anyone to name a fast food place and McDonalds will likely be the first thing they think of. Ask a child where they want to eat and the first answer is very likely to be McDonald's. (It seems to be one of the first words kids learn these days) That familairity and name recognition go a long way to promoting continued business. Finally they know how to remain profitable. Take, for example, the double discussed earlier. Any fast food location operates on rather slim profit margins. It has been a very long time since did a profit and loss statement for a franchise but I know a location makes less than 5 cents frofit on a double. (probally around 2.5 to 3.5 cents) For anything sold therer is, of course, the cost to make the product. After that for every item sold a pre-set amount of the cost goes to McDonalds corparate the remainder goes to the franchise. Out of that <5 cent profit utilities and payroll have to paid as well. With costs on some things rising removing a single slice of cheese saves between 7 and 10 cents. (Yes, that sounds small and dumb ,but, multiply that amount by the 500 or so they sell a day.) Thus they are able to keep the price point the same while offering the same (essentially) sanwich and maintain a bit of profitability.
  18. If it just a display glitch that's good. If 300+ is deducted for no apparent reason that will annoy me greatly. However, it seems that continuing to post is pointless if so doing further drives the number into the negative range.
  19. I somehow managed to get -361.84 MyCents. I did make a post in the support section yesterday that I do not see today. So I guess if it got deleted then then somehow that managed to deduct a large amount of MyCents. The post was simply asking (I thought nicely) if there was a way to find new or recent topics. Can this be fixed or do I need to post 348 cents worth of posts to be in the positive again?
  20. The & is telling the command line parser that a new command is beginning. Thus your sytax is not going to work. The easiest solution would be to rename rhw offending folder to something friendlier to the batch file syntax.
  21. There is not a command line that can be used to perform zip functions in Windows. Thus you will need a third party such as Pkzip or 7-zip that allows command line zip functions.
  22. I prefer the old one but this skin is far better than what ever was going on with that blue disaster yesterday. The design is OK, lets be honest there are a hundred thousand BB templates out there (if not more) and most of them look pretty much the same. I do think it looks a bit girly for the target audience, but that is just opinion. I do miss the super simple boxes that let me look at the most recent new topics and most recent new posts with just a glance. I typically check the page two or three times a day and I lied the ability to see what was going on in one look. "Today's Active Topics" and "View New Posts" seem to contain the same data for me currently. The active topics is kind of useless given this board propensity to add new post to topics that are several years old. Case in point the "where can I find web templates" topic. Someone decides to make their one and only post in a three year old thread and that constitutes an active topic? On the previous system I could tell at a glance that was an old topic being dug up right away. I dislike having to look for then wait for information that is easily presentable otherwise. A new Topic option at least would be nice given that we have the completely useless top 20 options. (And really does anyone care who the top 20 people with time on their hands happens to be?) Basically why make information harder to find? This is an especially good question when the board (at least at one point) purports to have a professional stance. I am aware my post sounds rather negative. Please realize that is not my goal per se. I like the the Asta community and the Hosting is absolutely top notch. I simply do not believe in changing something that works fine for the sake of changing it. On the positive side I am so very glad the stunningly useless shout box is no longer atop the forums.
  23. If I get the time I will have to see if I can put together a design or two. Getting ready for my Christmas trip will have to come first though.Allow me to add a couple questions to my post for the sake of the design process. What does the Asta in Asta host mean? Who do you envision the target audience of the board to be? Do you want any wording aside from the the name Xisto on the banner graphic? These are normal considerations for a design endeavor.
  24. Fairly simply put Ther have been dozens upon dozens of people trying to say that Jesus never existed. Saying it was a mushroom trip is just another odd justification for making a book. History in general does not refute the existence of Jesus. You can argue if you believe he was the Son of God or the Messiah or rose from the dead, but to argue the existance is a non starter.
  25. Who doesn't like Google? I have stated before, and will continue to do so, that Google is highly over rated. Actually if Google is around in ten years I would be willing to bet that they will be though of much the same way as Microsoft is currently by many people.
