  1. Problogger.net gives a list of ways to make money through your blog, many of which work with any type of website. I think there are some resources there which are similiar to Google AdSense. You could also consider affiliate programs, where you link to a site's content and they pay you for it. There are tons of ways to make money through such programs; you just need to do some research and find them.
  2. Those things are really, really high in sugar though.
  3. I agree sites should be mostly uniform in their appearance. It's nice to update once in awhile though as web standards and design trends change. It also gives the impression that you're trying to keep your site as current as possible.CSS has made the process of changing pages so easy and convienent. Plus, by altering it instead of the actual HTML, you're more likely to keep key features of your site, such as its navigation, constant. This is much easier on your visitors. I'm always a little annoyed when sites I really like completely revamp their appearances, to the point where I can't find what I'm looking for. Small, incremental changes are best so that your appearance "evolves" over the years.
  4. The three main stages of love you mention remind me of something I read in a book about the biology of love. The author said something very similiar; that there were three different parts of love: lust/desire, friendship, and attachment. By combining these different parts in various ways, you can describe the different kinds of love. The initial romance you feel, for example, is lust+friendship. Later an attachment develops, and then the desire slowly fades as you get married, have kids, etc. This is the "normal" flow of love, but it can vary. There are couples who stay together out of habit, and perhaps because they still lust for each other. In this case the friendship aspect is gone.I strongly believe that love is a multi-phase process like you mention. What I often wonder about though is how long the different phases tend to last. How long do most couples go before the initial passion fades and the deep respect/devotion for one's partner sets in? I know it varies among couples, but there's probably an average which gages it.Quite an interesting subject, for sure.

    Java Or C++

At my school, they teach us Java first, then C++. And it makes sense...I've yet to find a significant project that was much easier to do in C++ than in Java. C++ has its perks in that it often produces faster programs and can be more powerful, but Java has the advantage of a huge standard library which helps immensely in your coding. Often you'll find that what you want to do has already been done for you, so you can concentrate on other aspects of your code. It's also easier to make your program web-accessible with applets in Java.
  7. I didn't bother with the SAT either, just went for the ACT. For me, it was much easier being that there were no analogies and there was a science section. I also like how they don't take away points for wrong answers. Where I live, the SAT is the norm, and they don't even tell students that they have the option of taking the ACT and that most colleges will accept either test. If my parents hadn't taken the ACT, I wouldn't have even known about it. I wish they did a better job informing of us of all possibilities, not just what most people do.
  8. All animals, which includes humans and insects (the examples I gave are insects). We humans do respond in ways that could probably be considered one of these methods, but we also have higher cognition which influences our behavior. Thus, our behavior is indeed more "advanced" if you think about it in this sense.
  9. How code savvy are you? If you have the ability to had code a store yourself using a database, that is what I would recommend doing. It'd be more time consuming than using someone else's code of course, but you could customize it to fit your exact needs. Plus you would have the database at your fingertips in its bare form, and you could display and view books exactly how you wanted by creating your own queries.
  10. I like a pretty interface as well, but most importantly, I like a usable interface. Many interfaces are poorly designed due to being thrown together at the last minute, with the thought being that the important part of the program lies in the technical function, not the way this is presented. A poorly designed interface, however, can lead to many of the program's features being unable to be used because users don't want to take the time to figure out an unintuitive design.
  11. Me too...whenever I can, I use text editors to edit my files. The only time I use word processors is when I'm working on a novel and want the revision features, or when I'm doing a school assignment where I need it to print nicely. Text editors are more flexible, and if basic features are all I need, then that's all that I want to be available.
  12. I thought it was interseting, but not Shakespeare's best. My favorite by far was Hamlet, due to the complexity of the story and characters. This could be due to the way the plays were taught at school though; my teacher who went over Julius Caesar with us really kept banging it into our heads, whereas my teacher for Hamlet had us explore the themes and ideas of the play more on our own.
  13. In second grade my teacher read us "Little House in the Big Woods." We did several projects on it and did all these activities that related to it...it was a lot of fun. I loved the book and went on the read the rest of the series. I love how the series spans across Laura's whole life throughout the years, as well as showing the life of her husband. It makes it so interesting and memorable.
  14. With the Series of Unfortunate Events movie especially, you lose all the references and humor the author includes in the writing of the book. This was also the case with the Princess Bride. I saw the movie first and I had no idea that the book was actually humorous, until I read it. Then I wished that the movie had somehow been able to incorporate that into it, since it really is what made the book interesting.
  15. Note that while some oils are healthier than others, this is due to the type of fat they contain, not the calories. So by choosing olive oil over palm oil, you aren't lowering the calories in your diet, you're just getting less saturated fat. While it's important to consume the right fats, you still need to watch calories if your goal is losing weight.
  16. Frontline recently did a fascinating report on the healthcare systems of the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Taiwan, and Japan. They examined each of these systems and looked at the pros and cons, comparing them to what we have here in the US. If you're interested in learning about how different healthcare systems compare, you should definitely check it out. You can watch the full program online here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/sickaroundtheworld/
  17. It's vital to test your web pages in multiple browsers, so you should really get several of them. W3schools has a chart of the percentage of users using different browsers. IE is by far the most common. I recommend getting Firefox though as your main test browser, since most pages that render in Firefox will work in IE. Also, Firefox has a slew of web building tools to help you out. I use FireBug to debug my Javascripts, and I've found the IE tab ad-on to be enormously helpful. With this ad-on, you don't need IE; you can open a page in an IE tab right there in Firefox. It's quite convienent. You should still expect to test pages in multiple browsers though, if you want optimal results. Even web standards don't guarantee that your pages will look the way you want them to in all browsers; they just ensure it will be as close as possible.
  18. Speaking slowly and clearly is indeed very important. I worked for a few days as a receptionist, and so many people would rattle off information incoherently, and I felt awful asking them to repeat themselves but what else can you do? By trying to speed thigs up by talking quickly, you really end up taking more time since you'll probably have to repeat stuff or your information will be taken down wrong.
  19. The most you can do is just be there for your friend, to listen and provide emotional support. Like truefusion said, you can't give his father a job, and you probably shouldn't offer financial support because it might be insulting. Perhaps remind your friend of all the cases of people who have searched for jobs but been successful. Just be reassuring and upbeat, and take his concerns seriously. It isn't your job to solve the problem, but you can help ease the worry.
  20. Good tips! Preparation for speaking in public is key. I've often found the following steps to be helpful in preparing speeches:Six steps to prepare for a speech:1.Select and narrow the subject Select a topic you know well and that your audience can relate to Don?t use too many details with might bore your audience Keep it simple2.Determine the purpose There are different reasons to give a speech: to inform, to educate, to entertain, to inspire, and to convince Delivery, structure, and topics will all be determined by the purpose3.Analyze the audience and occasion Your speech should address the needs and level of understanding of your audience Contact someone if you know nothing about your audience4.Gather materials Start in advance so that you?ll have plenty of time to get what you need Get things from unusual sources if you want to add interest Have a wide variety of sources5.Arrange and outline points Arrange the points in a logical sequence which can easily be followed Organize the content so the listeners can sort it out as they receive it Use transition statements to link one point to another Include personal stories to engage emotions and jokes if appropriate6.Practice the speech out loud Always practice your speech so that it does not sound awkward when you give it Practice all parts equally so that you are familiar with the entire speech Ask others for feedback to make sure you?re on the right track Practice in front of a mirror to notice any distractions, and tape record yourself to concentrate on your speed and tone and listen for verbal clutter
  21. I set up my own blogging system using PHP and MySQL...that way I can customize it specifically to my needs. It wasn't difficult at all. One of the things I don't like about blogging systems is that all the sites that use a given system look similiar; you can tell what they're using based on the layout of their site. I wanted my blog to have its own unique look, so that was the main motivation behind creating my own system. I recommend this approach to anyone who wants greater flexibility in the features of their system.
  22. Many of the descriptions of the zodiac signs are vague to the point where they can apply to anyone. So when you read one, you think "yeah, that kind of does sound like me." I find that the descriptions of my type hit my personality about 50/50; some of what it says is true, but other parts are so off. I like reading my horoscope for fun, and I think many of the times the advice they give is good for anyone since it's stuff like "don't spend too much money" or "take some time for your friends." I think that as long as you take it lightly, astrology is fun and entertaining, but like most things, should not be followed without discretion and common sense.
  23. Just as you think that your Christian beliefs are "correct," so does your friend believe that his non-Christians ones are "correct." Your attmpts to convert your friend would be equal to any attmpts he made to convert you to non-Christian beliefs. Would you change your mind in this situation? Most likely neither will he.Everyone believes that their beliefs are the right ones, otherwise they would change them. It's pointless to try to change people's minds by telling them they're wrong. The most you can do is present your case objectively and logically, and let them choose what they want to believe for themselves. I believe the Christian thing to do in this situation would be to accept your friend's differences and forget about them, rather than using them as a basis for judgement.
  24. You can argue that women in Christianity are viewed as less than men as well...the issue isn't so much the Qu'ran or the Bible, but rather the way they are interpreted. While many suras in the Qu'ran seem to say that women are not equal to men, there are others that indicate positive things about them. The Qu'ran does not make maltreatment of women acceptable; it is mearly abused by certain patriarchal societies to justify their behavior.Islam is more than just a religion; it is an entire way of life. This is one of the reasons it is difficult to intergrate it into non-Islamic societies, especially ones that advocate separation of church and state. Many governments are afraid of conflicting loyalties; they feel that if a Muslim is dedicated to their religion, they may put that above their loyalty to their country. I think this is one of the reasons Islam gets such a bad rep. Because it is so traditionalist, it has been difficult for Islamic beliefs to become modernizded to the extent that some other religious beliefs and practices have, and this also creates tension. By adapting to the changes that many socities wish to see, Islam could more easily be integrated and accepted in more people's lives.
