  1. C++ Primer Plus is probably one of the best ones out there. It's what we used in my C++ class. It's a fairly hefty book, and you can pick up a new copy from amazon for around $35, or used for around $25.
  2. I agree. Nuclear power used responsibly is perfectly fine (the fire analogy was particularly good). I would say however, that we are still not at a point where we can properly dispose of the waste that is created. My personal opinion is that we should just launch it at the sun. While it would increase the cost of starting a nuclear power plant, I think that a part of the startup cost (possibly subsidized by the government) should include the cost of launching a large percentage, if not all, of the waste created when a nuclear power plant is started up. If those costs are included from the beginning, then it will give allow us to better determine the feasibility of switching to more nuclear power. On top of that it will help us determine if it is cost effective to do so. At this point in time it might still be too much, but because of advances in the space industry, and organizations like Google's Lunar X-Prize, I think that we'll soon be at a point where sending nuclear waste into space is a feasible alternative to what we're doing now (stashing it in random places where we think people won't mind).
  3. If someone had a choice between the two, and they weren't worried about spending more money when they have to buy Vista a few years down the road, I'd suggest Windows XP Pro. The only issue is that they are going to discontinue support for Windows XP in a couple years. XP Pro will get support a little bit longer, and then they will switch entirely over to Vista. Granted, I'm not sure if its even possible to purchase copies of XP anymore. If they haven't discontinued it already then they will be doing so in the near future. When I bought my copy of XP Pro it was the last one they had at that Best Buy.
  4. They do look at what college or university you attended. But going to Princeton or MIT doesn't ensure that you'll get the best education (although it is a pretty good bet that you'll get a good one at least). There are a lot of other universities that are just as good, if less well known, but a lot cheaper and probably not as stressful. There are actually a lot of state universities that are on par with Princeton and other Ivy League schools. If you do a search for "Public Ivies" you can find more information about them. Greene's list is particularly good as it's focus is entirely on comparing the academic rigor of the universities.
  5. Considering that you probably produce plenty of water vapor just by making tea, much less cooking anything else, I don't think there would be any significant difference in climate/weather. The amount of water vapor would be negligible compared to the amounts that even produced naturally in nature. The energy used to create the fuel cells could easily come from renewable resources. All that it requires is proper investment. Wind, solar, and tidal/wave energy are all good sources, but I personally think that we should start looking at increasing our use of nuclear energy. With the proper safeguards it is quite safe. Also, once the cost of sending objects into space is brought down (very possible within the next couple decades), then we will have a good way of disposing of the nuclear waste created. Launching nuclear waste at the sun seems a good way to get rid of it.
  6. Well, college is cheaper over there, but usually not for foreign students. My suggestion would be to go to a state university, and then study abroad. In-state tuition is usually relatively cheap, and if you qualify there is usually a lot of financial aid. I have a friend attending WSU (Washington State University) who is currently studying apparel design and merchandising (ie: fashion) in Florence, Italy. There are a lot of good study abroad programs, so I think that would probably be your best bet. Of course, if you decide you love it over there you could probably transfer to that school in France as well, after studying abroad there.
  7. I tend to be a little bit more optimistic about my generation than the rest of you seem to be. I think the largest differences are probably caused by location. Where I live (Northwest USA), my generation seems to be doing pretty good. The largest gripe I had over the last couple years was that my generation seemed overly apathetic, mostly about politics. But, I've had to revise my opinion of that lately because of how much my generation has gotten into the current presidential primaries. All in all, I think things are actually better in most respects. Things are definitely different, but I think the current generation (at least here in the US) is more accepting of other people than previous generations. We've grown up learning about racism etc... but we haven't grown up with racism (this may not hold true for everybody, but it does for me). Most of those issues that r0b-dog mentioned, at least the ones dealing with teachers, I haven't seen. If a student was hurt at my school, the teachers immediately went to help them. I saw it multiple times, it even happened to me. I've also seen teachers break up a fight, but they didn't use a cane afterwards, they just suspended the students for a number of days.
  8. That seems pretty cool. I plan on taking a German class next fall, and I've always been interested in learning other languages. I'm in the process of signing up right now, it should be interesting.
  9. If you plan on using Swastikas and things of that nature, make sure it is tastefully done, possibly even a little understated rather than blatant. Without knowing more of the plot I can't really give you much more advice. What sort of movie is this by the way? Are you planning to do just a short 5-10 minute type of thing?
  10. I'm not going to lie, I enjoy watching Naruto. Of course, I can't stand it in English, and can only watch the subbed versions. Also, I wholeheartedly agree that there is much better anime out there, stuff like Planetes, Black Lagoon, etc...
  11. I think there are plenty of people that commit crimes, even crimes that would land them in jail, that don't fit the classic "criminal" stereotype. I know plenty of people who break the law, but that doesn't mean they're necessarily bad people, and plenty of criminals are patriotic about their country and would be willing to protect it. The military provides a very structured and rigid environment with set rules. Sometimes, thats all a person needs to put their life back on track. On the other side, there are people who are convicted of crimes that should definitely not be a part of the military, but I don't think judges choose to give those people the option of joining the military. I think the option is only given when the conduct of the person warrants it.
  12. I enjoy Coca-Cola but I wouldn't say I'm addicted to it. I used to drink quite a lot of it but I've been trying to cut back on drinking soda lately. Now I only drink it when I go out for fast food or go out to restaurants, instead of drinking it at home as well.
  13. I think it's a good thing in most respects. I've talked to multiple people who say the military has done a lot for them, so maybe it can do a lot to help criminals get back on track. In my opinion, any sort of method that attempts to rehabilitate people instead of sending them to jail is probably a good idea.
  14. I think Graffiti is definitely art. If you've ever seen some of Banksy's work you'd probably agree. He's a very well respected Graffiti artist. I'd suggest googling Banksy and checking out his work, it's pretty cool.
  15. You might want to look into seeing a Notary, they might be able to help you with something like this. Not entirely sure thats what you should do, but as you don't want to see a lawyer I'd say thats the next best thing.
  16. As you're only 16, my suggestion would be to not worry about it too much at this point. Give yourself a few years to figure out what you really want. Who knows how you'll feel in a couple years, but 16 is usually an age where you're trying to figure out where your place is socially. Don't let how you feel about sexual stuff influence how you interact with other people on a normal social level.
  17. It sounds interesting. What kind of stance are you reading it from though? For me, I'm not especially religious so if I were to do this I'd probably have entirely different reactions than someone who has gone to church all their life.
  18. I've found that free anti-virus programs like AVG are actually more effective for me than Norton and McAfee. I've also found that combining it with a good firewall is especially effective, I haven't had any problems with viruses or malware since I started using AVG and Comodo Firewall.
  19. The link isn't working. Is the sight down or is it a bad link?
  20. How is the service pack? I have a copy of Windows Vista but I've not installed it yet. I'm quite happy with Windows XP Pro at the moment. If the service pack does enough to improve Vista I'm tempted to install it on a partition.
  21. I would suggest using an Anti-Virus, and possibly even a decent firewall as well. I use AVG anti-virus and Comodo Firewall Pro, both of which are free. I wouldn't suggest Comodo, as it interrupts what you're doing a lot. It doesn't bother me, but most people would get fed up pretty fast. ZoneAlarm firewall worked well for me in the past however, and wasn't too obnoxious. Reinstalling Windows will work, but it's a lot easier to use a firewall and and an anti-virus and prevent yourself from getting it in the first place. If you do reinstall windows, I'd suggest getting some security software (free) as the next step before doing anything else.
  22. MicroTorrent all the way. Although it is commonly referred to as uTorrent.
  23. I tend to believe that we're entirely organic beings, and our concept of "consciousness" is merely a byproduct of our hyper-developed brains (a sort of genetic defect unrelated to survival that has persisted because it is not detrimental). On that note, I think that the only way we are "reincarnated" is in the fact that the atoms that make us up will eventually be broken up and reconstituted into some other form.I'm also agnostic, so it's not that I disbelieve in god, just I can't be sure and it makes more sense if we're just random bits of energy formed into mass that happen to interact with each other in specific patterns.
  24. I just voted other because I regularly use the first three, and I have used the fourth one. I have various uses for all of them, and I actually have four gmail accounts... but I only regularly check 2 of them.
  25. You could try asking her if the relationship is working for her. Let her know that you're happy with it as it is, but if there's anything you need to do different for her you'd gladly be willing to do so.
