  1. Like most serious webdesigners I know about Flash can program it, but only ever use it when I cannot talk a client out of it.I am soo glad that Flash is no longer the craze it used to be with every person thinking that thier site should be written in flash , without knowing why , just cos its Flash!I find it too cumbersome for what most sites want, i.e most sites just use it for banners these days, some people still design whole sites in it but there ones are normally the showstopping sites used to promote a movie or a big retail brand. The money involved to develop such a site is amazing! ive seen people charged 20K dollars just for a working framework of a site without content.I hope Flash just kind of dies away and gets replaced with funky Ajax scripts, Ajax has more of a future as far as I am concerned;)
  2. What are you saying? I am one of those geeks who stay indoors all day long!! Ho hum!
  3. haha I love it !! I want one right away!! I really dont like killing spiders because they are great for your garden and also indoors ( if the gf and son dont freak out cos of them) but our cat really likes to chase them down and kill them;(this could be the perfect solution;))
  4. I must say that http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ is the best free shopping cart around.I have tested the ones on fantastico and they are really nothing compared to this. Theres lots of different plugins you can install to display random products, featured products etc and also many different scripts to make the disaplying of shop images a lot better than other cart systems. The support on the forums is amazing, I had some tweaks I needed to do for a project and the guys on the board came to my resuce right away. They also have IRC meetings and helpers there can help you with any problems you are having with a cart. All in all I think its the best cart around;)
  5. I am not one of those people that belive sept 11 was setup by the govt, but whay i think for sure is that the Govts of the world really have made the best of it.The new security laws in the US and UK for instance are a complete joke.More and more of our civil rights will disapear everytime theres another attack somewhere.More and more laws will be written to "protect" us- read that as "control" us.Its very scarey to find out that the US govt had plans in place well before sept 11 and were rehearsing some of them on the actual day. They actually spent millions of dollars on a think tank proposing such terror attacks that happened on sept 11 and how then they could make good use of the fear to control the people better.People who who involved with that were Cheyney, Rumsvelt etc. Also a good read is Orwells 1984- I had to read this at school, we are in 1985 right now I think!! and its going to get a LOT worse...
  6. Could be from someone running terminal services sometimes these sessions get reported wrong? Also, I think you should see the recent post about the most spyware infected pc!!Your browser looks just like it!!
  7. Yes people are doing this a lot these days.I saw an advrt in a British newspaper that was for the latest Bourne Identity movie, they were giving a voucher for a 512 mb stick free to everyone. The stick had lots of trailers games etc for the new film.My guess is like those new cruiser drives had some kind of "hidden" partition on them so you could never delete the content but were free to use say the 250mb that was left over.Unless you use some kind of removal tool no matter what the content will always be there after a normal format of the stick.I think its a really marketing exercise, who would turn down a free memory stick? I know I wouldnt;)
  8. My vote would have to goto Knoppix, I use the full DVD version and I have customised it myself with a few packages I use a lot on Linux which are not in the default build.
  9. Css is soo powerfull!! you could spend ages looking at all the things it can do, a lot of designers these days (me included) try to do virtually everything on the page using CSS. Also having your CSS checked by a validator at http://www.w3.org/ is a must for serious designers. This will point out anything in the CSS that is not a "correct" way of using a CSS command. You can also use this site http://www.cleancss.com/ to clean up and optimise your code.
  10. It depends on how many you have installed.I have a Library of over five thousand fonts. If I installed them all I think my pc would take about 5 days to boot up!!I normally have about 30-40 fonts installed at anytime, and my 2gig proc and 1gig RAM seems fine with that.I have a great application called AMP Font Viwer and that is great for sorting out large libraries of fonts.you can preview al the fonts in a folder and with one click add them to the windows font folder. Also you can remove fonts very fast and also make groups of fonts within its library.
  11. Ok first of all im more interesed in using it for WGA issues not the IE issues.Second I think I have been worrying about computer security longer than some of you have lived, im not some noob 15yr old that thinks hes "Leet"When I first used this place I fully checked it out, I have run traffic shapers, a hardware firewall, a software firewall, anti virus and spyware, all against this app and what it downloads. Its 100% clean! I monitored the ports on that pc for days and noticed nothing unusual and no unknown processes running at all.So I think its pretty safe, as I said in the other post I used this and updated then rebooted and went to Microsoft and the lists of updates were the same.I think its basically making a "wrapper" around the MS site with the WGA stuff stripped out and the IE check stripped out.
  12. Hey all I found this great site http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ What it does is allow Firefox users to use Windows update. Also its VERY handy for getting updates if WGA is turned on. This site has a databse of all the updates available and really looks and feels like the normal Windows update. They say on the site that its not a 100% version but they say most updates are including on thier database a couple of days after Microsoft publish them. I just remade a new Ghost and used this site to update my XP to the current updates, I ran it from this site first then installed and rebooted then went to the Microsoft Update site and it couldnt find any updates at all. Its even installed all the security patches for IE7 which I thought was strange but great at the same time
  13. Well I have been dabbling in Photoshop for years and also a few years of Illustrator, I use Dreamweaver on a daily basis and sometimes (hopefully never any more) Flash.I was using them all on the CS2 release and thought that was a big step up untill I tried CS3. To start with Illustrator is a bit baffling and confusing becasue of the way the tools are arranged but once you get the hang of it theres no going back.Photoshop CS3 is not a great leap forward over CS2 I find but some of the things I have tried that are new (like the new improvments on the dodge) seem to work well.Dreamweaver CS3 is much much much better than ever before (I have used it for years) I love the new CSS handling stuff because I do a lot of work in CSS these days.Even the templates are pretty damm good I must say, the code is nice and clean if you want it or its full of help text for each part of a layout in a template.I use the Validator tool a lot inside Dreamweaver these days for checking code and that is a great improvment on the past.Infact I do pretty much everything these days on it - in the past I would have Notepad++ open, an FTP program, all doing the seperate jobs of building a site. These days I really use the "Manage Sites" part of Dreamweaver (yes I know its been around since version 6 or something) and fill all the info out and let Dreamweaver do everything.A Nice new feature also is being able to drag and drop from Photoshop and Illustrator right into the Dreamweaver window.Saves so much time locating the files needed, as soon as a graphic is ready for web, just drag it in! Spry - Hmm...not going to say much about this..I just hope its not the future! as some Adobe freaks will lead you to think, Also remember Cold Fusion is NOT the future also )It can do some nice things very fast but I kinda shudder at the way its going to be implemented - I was around when Flash first came out.. ;(Adobe Bridge - now for me this is the jewel in the CS3 crown, before I used to use Explorer on thumbnail view or something like Compupic or Acdsee to browse image folders and site folders - no more!! Bridge to the rescue!!Again I have to say yes I know it was in CS2 but I never really got round to messing with it but after Lightroom came out and I got into that and I heard Bridge had the same interface on CS3 I was curious.I dont know how I lived without Bridge before!! I do a lot of graphics and webpages and I have many cluttered up folders of all the crap and all the copies of the crap in different formats before I have to deliver a page or banner etc.I never get round to sorting out the "Client" folders before now, its been a job for a rainy Sunday afternoon that has not come now for 5 years;) Sometimes I try to sort it out..I burn a few dvds forget about it.Using Bridge I have been able to sort all the mess out because it can Thumbnail just about anything! so much easier than having about 4 different apps open trying to work out which is the "final" copy of something produced 3 years ago. Also like the other apps in the CS3 suite Bridge works seemlessly with the others, its the HUB of CS3 and the HUB of my studio now.Again its about drag and drop and kinda of (I know I kick ppl for saying it) Web2.0 and sooo much easier to get things done with.I think on a whole upgrading to CS3 has already saved me about 6-7 hours in "finding things" time, cutting and pasting huge files backwards and forwards, and less stress on my pc of having soo many more apps open all the time. The installer is Massive! that needs to be said, its littered my documents and settings Application data folders with about 4000 htm help files- noticed that doing a virus scan..added about ten mins on to it ;(But on a 2.5 gig machine with 1 gig of RAM it reacts very well indeed, doesnt feel as "Hoggy" as I thought it would be of my system resources, generally I have Bridge, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Illustrator open at the same time along with Firefox, Opera and Winamp and the PC seems to be running along fine. Its damm expensive dont get me wrong esp if you didnt go though the upgrade system like I did, if you buy it standalone its a big shock! but all in all its the BEST thing out there on the market by a long way! nothing will stand in CS3 way I think.Nothing is packaged and designed like this.Nothing intergrates different programs output seemlessly like this. There is no going back - CS3 is the future of Design
  14. Sure but deepdown in the windows folders, maybe the i386 folder there will be a Frontpage deployment cab.It sets the folder up just incase you need to install it (or windows thinks you do) and then it copies the cab to that folder. Also if you into Control Panel then Add Remove software then Windows Components look for IIS in there, it will probably be there..
  15. I use the AVG free version on my pcs here and I found it over many years to be the best one around.I have many times found a virus at work or on someones portable hard drive that is "supposed" to have been cleaned and protected by Norton. Take a look at it here
  16. Yes they deploy it as part of XP, I dont think its the FULL version but a LITE version to do some basic editing tasks.I think also by default the XP build has IIS (Internet Information Server) installed and turned on.Its been soo long since I installed XP properly I cant really remember, I have made my own XP build you see with SP2 and Wm11 installed and a whole pile of junk thats not needed removed, so my build probably has IIS and Frontpage taken away so its never installed when I do a clean rebuild.
  17. I will eat my keyboard, mouse and TFT if the new version of Windows is like what is shown in the film.I will eat my new 500g HD if its ready by 2009!! no way !!!

    Swf Playlist

I would attack the problem a different way..You say these files only have sound that you weant to play in a list.If you have a dual channel soundcard (most pcs do) why not play the flash files then use something like Wavelab (the best thing) or some free program to capture the sound from the flash files and make a .wav or .mp3 from them? That way you could just use winamp or media player to put them on a playlist?
  19. Well if you have a firewall installed which i highley recommend, you should just not trust the application you want to block and the program will try to goto the internet but will be blocked.Something like Zonealarm is pretty easy to use and offers pretty good protection and theres a totally free version, google for Zonealarm Free and you should be able to pick it up.I have some software on my system here that "trys" to register itself each time I start it up but zonealarm just takes of it and I carry on using the software without any fuss or nag screens.
  20. yeah I have the same thing ;() three physical hard drives, one DVD burner, one 19-1 card reader which adds 6 drives on!! and an external hard drive then also two virtual drives from magic iso and alcohol, then my phone when thats connected - it sees the flash drive as a hard drive and assigns it a letter.ALso I have two network shares mapped to my server. So all in all i have the possiblity of 16 different drives!! It also drives me insane trying to work out which drive my camera memory card is in and which drive letter my portable hard drive will have! I think like me you know how to change a drive letter inside the Computer Managment console in the control panel but reserving a drive...hmm I have done a little research and it really doesnt seem to be possible ;() Heres what Microsoft say about the problem. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/282530 Ive read a few forums on the topic also and apart from changing the drive letter you cannot seem to "reserve" a drive letter for use by a certain device. Anyone know a registry hack? cos thats the only way to solve it i feel.
  21. Well I had a great rant about this when it was first unveiled to the world, now I have seen one and played with it I am more qualified to add my two cents. I am now stranger to Smartphones, I have had a Palm since they came out, I even had the treo you could call on, then I dumped Palm and went over to the HTC smartphones based on the MS Pocket pc OS.I have had my HTC 9090 for about two years and it kicks the *bottom* on anything on the market!! Its an amazing bit of kit. There are many big companies like HTC, HP, Palm, RIM etc all making really decent smartophones and have been in the market for years already So I was very skeptical when Apple decided to try and gatecrash the smartphone market with the Iphone. As usual Apple made wild and basically UNTRUE claims about their new product and how they have invented something totally new and different but in reality make something that is a cheaper (but way more expensive to the end user) copy of other products already on the market, like the revolutionary Ipod – funny that I had an Mp3 player with a HD three years before the Ipod came out… The same has to be said about the Iphone – the actuall technical specs are below the standard of many of its competitors. HTC have been working on a touch interface for a new phone for a couple of years now and released the HTC Touch a few months ago http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ so the one thing that Apple claim they have invented, the touch screen was already invented and in production a long time before the Iphone. Apple claims like they do with everything “Its so easy to use” example..it takes three clicks to make a phone call! You have to go into the contacts etc to call, most smartphones have an override “call” button, one press you get a keypad to make your call, press the contacts button and your contacts come up, on the Iphone you keep having to go through the main menu to place a call or enter the contacts because there is no buttons on the phone – this would drive me crazy!! On my phone its got about 6 buttons on the side and front that you can map to do just about anything. Another problem is the random Echo you get during phone calls on the Iphone. It now appears that Apple is replacing units for some users reporting the problem. So to get the Iphone to work you have to change the config of your Wifi base station and the config of your pc, laptop etc. Also this brings in more problems when trying to Wifi on the hoof, how many public stations and at cafes etc are WPA? 99% of the ones I have ever connected to on my phone are WEP. How many times have you had to change the battery on your phone in the past? in my case many times!! Now Apple have had the wisdom to install the very same battery from the Ipod in the Iphone.I think they have done this to save themselves a lot of money. Heres the kicker!! just like the Ipod you will have to send the phone back to Apple to replace the battery!! how obsurd is that!!!!! esp bearing in mind that the Iphone is "on" 24/7. Heres the price breakdown on a new battery you will need to send your phone to Apple and pay $86 — a service fee of $79, plus $6.95 shipping — to replace the battery.Thats a handsome profit in anyones eyes!!! There’s no third party applications allowed on the iPhone; with Steve Jobs suggesting that developers use the Safari web browser and AJAX to simulate them on the internet. Yes, he actually claimed that was just as good as allowing third party applications with a straight face. And Safari really isn’t up to the job it seems.. You can’t import more or use your MP3s as ringtones which for me is a pain because I actually have my own ringtone I made and its very distinctive and I have been using for ages ;(( The headphone jack is 3.5mm great!! So you can use any type of headphones right?? Wrong!! They have recessed the connector so far into the case it seems only Iphone or Ipod headphones can fit in the hole!! Oh my another product “lock in” also may I point out that the headphones supplied on the Ipod and Iphone are REALLY bad for your ears!! I have spent years with headphones on ( I used to be a professional DJ) and have perfect pitch hearing.I would not put these things in my ears for more than 10 mins or I would be really worried about my ears. The Iphone only has 4gb storage and cannot be upgrade – why? Because there is NO expansion slot for any kind of flash memory!! What the hell is this? For what reason?I think its because Apple have not got around to making storage cards yet? Yes I think so!! I bet my house on the new gen Iphone having its own totally uncompatable storage system, a totally new memory card that will not fit with anything on the market also forcing you to buy a new card reader from Apple if you don’t want to keep hooking your phone to the computer. My phone on the other hand came with a 2gb fast TX Sd card.I now have a collection of these, a 4gb for music, a 2gb for my maps of Europe for Tom Tom and my GPS add on to the phone and I have a cheap 512mb card for backups of the phone incase anything goes wrong..not that it has ever crashed in two years of being on 24/7. Service contracts – Apple have decided to let only one carrier per region that is worthy enough to handle the Iphone. In the US its AT&T – In Europe they are using Orange as their “Sole” provider…FFS this is just plain WRONG!! How many times over the years do you hear Mac freaks complain about MS and being “locked in” to their software and their partners..when in reality Apple are FAR worse at doing this! On my pocket PC I do not have to use Windows Media player (infact I have never used WMP on my phone- I am allowed to install other 3rd party software that is better) to register my phone, on the Iphone you have to contact Orange or AT&T via Itunes!! Lots of people in the US are having major problems actually registering their phones on the AT&T network, So you have paid all that money, signed up to a really harsh contract worth a lot of money, and now you cant even use it!! Nice customer service from AT&T and Apple. So if you have read all this, how do you feel about the Iphone now? I know what I think…Its garbage!! A toy for teens and people who think they are "hip" and ofc the legion of Apple freaks..Nothing that the serious tech user could live with and use…
  22. I think your trying to crack a wallnut with a sledgehammer here!Have you not tried using a windows bootdisk with Fdisk on it?Fdisk is here to sort MBR problems like this out.At the command prompt just type thisA:fdisk /mbr And it should rebuild the MBR for you. After a reboot it should be fixed, if not then move on to another program to try to fix it.
  23. Sounds like an odd problem!! ok maybe I have an odd solution for it then, I use VNC a lot here and I once did have some odd connection errors like this, for some reason it wouldnt connect a-b but b-a was fine..both firewalls were "trusted" and ports open and fine cos the link from b-a wouldnt have worked..it seemed to work fine again when I let it use the Windows system name instead of the IP..in the vnc connection box "housepc" instead of 192.168.2.10:5902Maybe just give that a go, I guess the pcs are all on the same Workgroup? or domain?
  24. If I click on the links above I get a login box ..I tried it a few days and it wasnt resolving and no login box.I think Buffalo has fixed it.It seems fine to me now..
  25. Well to start a game like that would take many many many hours of programming testing etc, I know I have been involved in making a game before. The programmers on this game were all over 25 and had many years of programming experience in business applications. All i can say its an uphill battle and will take months to get finished. One good thing tho is..Astahost will be able to handle it no problem, our hosting provides Apache, PHP and MySQL so if your thinking of making the game in php then it will be no problem at all.
