  1. I think you should....replace the PC....move to a new ISP.....never use MS software on this new pc....change your electricty supplier.....learn to type with your feet just to make sure its not static from your fingers...make sure its not a Tuesday when sending mail.....banish all the pets from the house when pc is on....do a little dance for the computer pixies when turning on the pc.....Then you should be fine!!!p.s. yes I am adding in totally random help just had to jump on the bandwagon ))
  2. Well I think its a good idea cos I mentioned it before..I don’t have much experience in setting it up but I'm sure all can be learnt pretty fast :)I would also be ok and willing to host it-also I could be in control of one of the Xisto - Web Hosting packages so bandwidth wouldn’t be a problem ..I could even just use one from Fantastico like tikiwiki to do it...Ideas of things to include....How about a walkthrough with screenshots of the hosting from when you get the activation email to uploading the files etc A Walkthrough of Cpanel and Fantastico....Then ofc we could have the Stikis in the Wiki!! the sticky threads from the board put up as solutions to FAQs etc etc.We could have wiki editors and subeditors for different content...i.e. the main forum mods controlling the FAQs and Walkthrough pages, but then subeditors to control say other tutorials such as one for Joomla or one including all the Linux help threads so we get an Xisto newbies guide to Linux or something like that....So what do you think guys? I’m up for having a bash at sorting it out...I’m sure Vyoma would help also )
  3. Good stuff..Just proves my point even more that Norton antivirus is a SHOCKING bit of software!@!!Ive found 19 virusses on a pc that had been "Cleaned" and "checked" by a subscription account for Norton...I used AVG and amazed the IT tech at the companyI was contracting at.I urge ALL of you - STOP USING THE NORTON VIRUS !!! cos it WILL give you a virus!!
  4. AHH! Unfortunalty you got hit by the same I thing did..theres nothing wrong apart from the fact we built up more credits than needed to start the package off..If you read the details..it actually says it gets reset after you get confirmed as a hoster..So the best plan is to get the exact amount of credits needed for your hosting plan then wait till its approved before earning more credits because they are deleted ;((I lost about 10 days hosting due to this...but asked Jeigh about it and he pointed me to the details of hosting..It only took me a few posts to earn the credits I had lost...Its no biggy your credits wil from now on tick down by one a day like the rest of us..
  5. I agree with Pyost here...I came to asta looking for a place I could try out ideas and have fun learning some new languages like PHP and MySQL so finding somewhere that boasts these things as a free service is hard..I looked around for a day before I stumbled on a review for Xisto then was knocked out by the features is has to offer...Unfortunatly I am really broke money wise atm ;(( (too many Nike sneakers and football strips for my son) but in the next coming months I will be a lot better off...One of the first things I am going to do is whizz over to Xisto - Web Hosting.com and register a domain name there...the deals are pretty good and I feel I wanna give Xisto some money for setting up Xisto in the first place. If my sites take off and need more bandwidth the first thing I would do is goto Xisto - Web Hosting again and sign up for their deal 2.1g and 33.3gig Bandwidth for only $3.33 a month...pretty amazing deals with all those features I think..I hope Xisto get a lot of customers this way..by giving us a sandbox to play in then when were ready for the real deal they offer such good prices for amazing features.Mark420 Asta/Xisto lover
  6. Well what i would do as a start is to download GEEXBOX or something similar. GeexBox Homepage This is a free linux distro that will do just about everything MCE does and it boots off a CD or DVD so nothing is installed. I would use this as replacement for MCE. Then I would upgrade the MCE to XP this way the user has the best of both worlds..a workign MCE type pc when needed and a full on XPinstall to do the day to day things on.. Good luck !
  7. Cmon in this day and age everyone should know how evil fast food is...If Americans want to keep stuffing it down thier faces ...then sue over it...it kinda makes me laugh...Let them do it and I hope McEvil goes broke by paying all these fat diabetic people to get motorised wheelchairs.
  8. Yeah thats an annoying "Feature" that firefox and internet explorer copied from Opera and failed badly with it...should look at Opera...see how its done properly
  9. The Wiki concept had been around since 1995..only became popular in the last couple of years.. I see it basically as a users manual for anything that the users themselves can edit and maintian. We could put a wiki about Xisto and how it works..how to use the logins..how to activate your account..how to stay on the good side of the admins ...how to use cpanel etc etc But most of the info for this is already in the forum.. A lot of sites duplicate the 'sticky" info from the forum and stick it into the wiki so users can goto one page and pick up the info from there instead of searching the forum. The Wiki software itself can be written in many different languages..Ive seen them in Java, Php, Python, Perl etc etc Heres an example of a well done Wiki.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/ This is one all about hacking and repairing smartphones..I use this one a lot for latest mods and software releases on my phone.. I really like the idea of Wikis...but I must comment that some bad thigns happen when you put the users in control.. Heres a link to a famous Wiki story...Brandt V Wikipedias 16 yr old admins ;( http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ This guy had a fasle page posted about his life.. Also theres been some changes to US politions pages to make them look foolish that went unnoticed for a long time... Just like the newspapers...DONT BELIEVE ALL YOU READ.... Mark420;)
  10. Same here I use Lilo and have a dual boot screen.Danaseh..when you setup Suse and it gets to the writing of the bootloader you can click on the entry for Windows and then SET AS DEFAULT also you can change the time in secs how long the bootloader sequence is displayed..I have mine of 3 secs..so my gf and son can just leave the system to boot into windows...when i come to use the pc i get the choice to go into Suse..With a working Linux build you will have to find the Grub.conf file and edit it manually it should be in the /boot/grub/grub.conf folder.Been a LONG time since I did this but...ive checked around and this should be ok..default 1 timeout 3splashimage (hd0,1)/grub/splash.xpm.gz title Suse Linux root (hd0,1) kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/hdh5 ro title Windows XP Professional rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1This will give you XP as default and the timeout at 3 secs..Hope this works!! Good luck!Worse case..you format and reload again ;( and then like I said..when Suse gets to the boot loader config click on the Windows entry and change it to default and you can change the timeout there too!I bet your getting used to the Suse installer right
  11. How many more times do we need to see this thread about the browser wars?Ten - eleven?Do a search and find all the threads that have gone before...Oh and it might be good if your facts were correct..Opera was NOT built for MAC's..The first version was ten years ago on a WINDOWS pc...I know cos I was one of the first 10K people to download it now I have it free for life...Just for the record I dont like Firefox either...im an Avid Opera user for years now
  12. Hey mate your a bit late with this one ;( http://forums.xisto.com/topic/91092-topic/?findpost=1064354634
  13. ahh man thats sad ;(I liked to watch his programmes...he and his wife had a real passion for what they were doing.Ive sat many times wondering how long it would take for a croc to snap him up..then he gets killed by a stingray ;(( Poor guy poor family ;(

  15. Well I paid a LOT of money to get all my DJ software and hardware together..Looking at the pirate radio thing..well i cant..theres two screenshots on the site and a link to download a player (please tell me they dont lock ppl ini with this player! i.e. u HAVE to have to player to listen..this would be foolish!!Not even a demo I can play with for an hour. There seems to be a link to a page that is blank that allows you to get it for "Free" So to even it try it I have enter my CC details in...bad move form the makers of the software..I think I pass and use Traktor and Shoutcast like I have done for years..
  16. If you goto the page look at the ALL OS link on the right..this will give you the MAC and Linux versions.I really like Azureus to my mind there is no better torrent client around..so many options that this can do that the others cant do
  17. hmm had a look at this pirate radio...you have to buy it!!! wtf!Best to stick with Shoutcast I think..no way will I pay for software like this..
  18. Your right Yordan I got it wrong ;(((It wasnt a 28k ;( i was a lot smaller prolly about the same 1200 baud..this was prolly about 1989 when I started work for the first time.
  19. Probably a dodgy installation of Outlook..Prolly one of its many dlls has gone *BLEEP* up..My suggestion...dump Outlook!! use a different mail reader..Outlook does nothing that other mail programs cant do and they will run better and lighter on your system than the memory hog that is Outlook.
  20. Really can Firefox do those things now?? Big deal!!Lol been using these features for years..cant imagine not browsing with 20 other tabs open and saved in thier positions when I start the pc next time..Oh yes I use Opera :)Had those features for 3 years orso now....
  21. Its all possible Danesh :)Im an old git as you should know by now :)Years ago before the internet I used to have to ring up a company in the USA over a 28.8k modem and download technical drawings from thier servers..At night they would turn thier modem on and unplug the phone so that people could get in via the phone line...Oh and before that...BBS @!@ prolly the only one on this site that used to use BBS )
  22. PAN anyone?Personal Area Network I.e. setting up an adhoc network using bluetooth or wifi enabled phones or PDAs.
  23. If Metal gets included then how about House ??I know its more popular than metal ever could be...Or Infact Indie too..that should be included..
  24. Now your opening a new kettle of fish :)Looks like your going to have to setup some USERS and assign passwords and groups to them.Goto the Control Panel then choose USERS & Passwords then I would make a new account for yourself that belongs to the group ADMIN that is seperate from the MAIN admin-the account made when windows was first installed. Then make an account called PORTABLE this is the acocunt you will use on the laptop. Here you can make the account a restricted user so that this account cant install stuff. Now goto explorer and find the folders that you want to deny access to the PORTABLE account-RIGHT click on them goto PROPERTIES and look at the SECURITY tab.Look at the bottom of the window and you should see a check box saying "inherit permissions from parent folder" uncheck this! this is whats going to make it work for you :)Remove the first entry for EVERYONE then click the ADD button and ADD your new admin account and give tick every box in the permissions tab. Then click ADD again and then ADD the PORTABLE account but do not give it full access..heres where you can choose what control to put on the account..Do this for all your crucial folders you want protecting on all of the shares and the desktop should be locked down a bit more than before..Good Luck
  25. I wont use winblows XP so I dont know hows it handled in that..but Im pretty sure its the same way that Win2k does it..Goto explorer and RIGHT click on a drive..Choose SHARING.A new window pops up and you have a big button with NEW SHARE written on it..Click it and add the name you want..I.E. my M: drive is my music drive..so in Win2k I shared it as MUSIC. E:is my apps so its called APPS.By default on Win2k the share is FULL CONTROL to ALL users I hope it does the same in XP ..if not then look at the permissions tab and enter the values that you want.Remeber also that it will ask for the Windows logon name used on the desktop to connect via the laptop. If you dont have a password on your account or tell windows to assume that your logged in it will still prompt for it OK then goto the laptop and do what you did before-RUN> \\192.168.0.2\Now you should see the shares..A good thing to do is also find the desktop from the laptop using the windows network icon and then choose the desktop and you should see the shares there too...RIGHT click on one then choose MAP NETWORK DRIVE from the list...then you get the option to reconnect on logon etc etc. This makes it a drive letter on the laptop thats always there..really handy for installing software and stuff from the desktop because a CD shared out will act just like a CD in the drive of the laptop..also works great for virtual drives..Good luck!
