This site definitely goes into my bookmarks folder! I like the idea very much, but it's not the idea that makes this site so good, it's the way that it was created. The scoring system is realistic and looks like live people are "reviewing" your web site. I wanted to check the score for my new web site, The Brits, and I can say that I got what I expected. Marketing is the worst part of my web site, but that is normal, since it's less than a month old. The other three scores are satisfying, in my opinion. Moving on, I found four bad points. Three out of those four are because the site is new, whereas the fourth is quite interesting. But hey, if my site contains the word "Brits", it doesn't mean I'm British, right? I guess there's nothing to worry about On the other hand, I have two good points - speed and layout. By the way, the site is hosted at Xisto, and this shows that the servers are fast. To sum up, my web site got 6.6. I can't say I like it, but it is the real state of my web site. I'll run the test once more, at the end of August, and see how good it gets till then. Great service.

Make Your Windows Some Funky how to make windows look better
pyost replied to biso38's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I have just recently tried this, but with a different program. I'm using StyleXP, which is considered to be the best one for these things. I've changed the boot screen (now it says "Windows Pirated Edition" ), the login screen (Biohazard image) and the main theme (Vista-like). Besides changing these major things, StyleXP also offers a few minor tune-ups. However, I can see that the program you mentioned also tunes-up Windows in the sense of speed. Honestly, I don't use those tools, because they rarely help. They just clean the registry and perform some similar actions that do not affect the speed very much. The best way to speed up your computer is to buy new hardware -
Before applying, I advise you to read this topic, since it will help you understand the crediting system: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/83399-topic/?findpost=1064300025. Once you have the required amount of credits, you should fill out this form and post it in the "FREE WEB HOSTING : NEW ACCOUNT REQUEST" section. However, I think you shoul post for a few days in order to improve the quality of your posts. That way you will have more chances of getting accepted, and will be able to apply for the second hosting package, which requires 30 credits. If you find it hard to post here, due to the technical nature of the forum, you might consider switching to Xisto.com, our sister site. There, posting requirements aren't as strict as here, but you still need to be active in order to maintain your account.

I am not quite sure who does Free Site Designer work, but I think I can answer your question. If they don't offer hosting, they must supply you with a package that can be used at another host. Xisto supports all the features that a professional site needs, and therefore I don't see why you wouldn't be able to run the site you mentioned.
-
On the index page of the forum (http://forums.xisto.com/index.php), below the shoutbox and the ads, there is a box where you can see your credit count.
-
It depends on the lenght of the post. A one-liner won't bring you much credits, whereas a single good post can get you those ten credits. Anyhow, if the posts are really good, it usually takes 4-5 posts to gather 10 credits. However, I must warn you that you must use the QUOTE tag when copying texts from another web site, since this is a common reason why people get denied.

Limewire Gets Sued Man file sharing to be destroyed
pyost replied to iGuest's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Exactly. This might be a little off topic, but did you hear what happened to "The Pirate Bay"? It is considered to be the biggest torrent site. And we all know that torrents are usually used for warez and distributing copyrighted and pirated material. Anyhow, their servers were located in Sweden, where torrents aren't against the law. Nevertheless, because large companies insisted (MPAA and RIAA), all of their servers were shut down, and the site stopped working for some time, since this action wasn't expected. But the guys from The Pirate Bay didn't give up - they moved everything to servers in Netherlands, where torrents are also legal. Now it's up to lawyers to discuss this "raid", because the law wasn't broken, so they didn't have the right to do this. What's more, people didn't like this move. After a few days, some hackers managed to hack the Swedish police web site Also, it seems that all the data was returned to Sweden after a few days. You see, piracy can't be stopped, it's a part of our lives. -
Happy Birthday Pc born on 12th., Aug., 1981

Aww, that's so cute We might not notice this, but the personal computer has advanced a lot during these 25 years. Who knows what we might have in another 25 years! As for the price, this can be really interesting. A home computer used to cost around 1500 dollars, and now it can be bought for let's say 300 dollars. Does that mean that future computers will be cheap? I guess we'll have to wait and see.. -
Glad to have you back, even though I don't remember you - you were probably gone before I registered May I ask, are you here for the hosting or for pleasure?
-
I see that you are not hosted at Xisto, and therefore I don't know what kind of cPanel you have. Where are you hosted? Anyhow, there is another option where you aren't supposed to upload anything. On the cPanel home page, try to find a link saying "Fantastico". If you do have, it will help you to install SMF or any other script package available. You just have to specify where it should be installed. I won't explain the process in more details, because it's rather simple. However, if you do not have Fantastico, you should do what XIII said, or ask for help on your host's forums.

I have noticed another thing that might have something to do with this problem. When we generate and download a full backup, we get some files that aren't accessible through FTP (amongst them is the mysql folder and the homedir folder).Beside the folders that we have in the root of our backup, there is also a file called "nobodyfiles" that has no extension. As far as I could see, the file contains pathways to files created/uploaded by some script - exactly those files that I cannot change. This is probably the file that somewhat controls the permissions, right?
-
Unfortunately, deleting the folder didn't work. Total Commander didn't give me any errors, but after the action had been completed, all the files were still on the server. However, I thought of another solution that worked. The component I installed was in a zip archive with all the files. When installing, I just selected the zip archive, and Joomla! uploaded and did what was necessary. Anyway, instead of changing the problematic file after installing it, I changed it on my computer. After installing it, everything worked just fine

Your Opinion On An Edited Joomla! Template
pyost replied to pyost's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Am about to do that right now I used the ones supplied by w3.org, but I'm customizing everything now. The idea is tempting, but there are also some negative points. I would like people saying "Hey! I saw that template on MamboHut and numerous other web sites! You n00b aren't 1337" I put a lot of work into it (a week for a template is a lot to me ), and sharing is not something I like. Urgh.. That's the most awful thing that can happen to a human being. Internet Explorer misinterprets the margin, padding and border attributes - and probably some others, too. If you need some help, be sure to create a topic at Asta I feel helpful this month -
vhortex, what you just said gave me a possible solution a problem that I had I installed Google Sitemap Generator component for Joomla! through the administration panel. It required me to CHMOD some files, but I just could. Neither Total Commander nor the cPanel file manager could do it - both gave me errors. Not only that, but I am unable to edit any of those files, and that is the most important thing, since it's not working properly. I have to edit one of the core files (not to mention that I still don't know WHAT to edit). Can you remember where the permissions are changed in cPanel?

Unfortunately, not all pages have 300 words, but we can say that the content is quite good. In my opinion, the average number of words per page is about 200. I have 4 pages with over 1000 words, and the rest is between 100 and 400 words. I guess that word number can be ignored if there are many pages

Your Opinion On An Edited Joomla! Template

Yeah, I'll change those images so they fit the template. By the way, do you happen to know which font is used on those images? I was thinking of a transparent background (or the same colour as the web site's), green font, and a border that's the same colour as the one on the site.As for MamboHut, correct me if I am wrong, but they offer templates for download only, right? I couldn't find a place where you can only look at the templates, if you know what I mean I just don't want this template available to anyone else. If someone really wants it, nothing can stop him/her from "stealing" it off my web site -

Well, the back background is black, but the front background is a shade of grey - but I guess you've noticed that. I will experiment with those colours you gave me, as soon as I solve some other problems, which have appeared now that I've set up a domain name. Yes, I finally got it You can check out the complete design at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ -
There is quite a simple explanation to this, my dear dhanesh. Everyone wants credits, and everyone can think of random nonsense at any time This topic is a blessing, considering that it is in a forum with post count on Heh, I think I got at least 10 credits while posting here

I tried those three fonts that you suggested, but I wasn't really satisfied with them. While the texts and titles do look nice, none of them gave me a satisfying menu. What I am trying to say is that the menu titles look a bit messy. To be honest, that's the only thing that bothers me. I'm rather neutral for the rest, but this is just wrong. Arial just gives the menus a simple look and it is easy to read.I thought of combining Arial with another font, but that would make the site a bit confusing. I'm not saying that other people could tell the difference, but I don't like the idea. Maybe I change my opinion during the night, who knows, but at the moment I'm keen on sticking to Arial. -
I guess you could still submit your site to some more popular directories, and skip the suspicious ones. But I don't think directories are that important or useful. Sure, links are always useful, but it's better to have a link on a web site with a similar topic. And remember, Google AdWords is your friend Now this is a good news! I've just installed a component on my new site (the one mentioned here: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/90830-topic/?findpost=1064352721) that generates Google Sitemap. Amongst other functions, there is one that shows you how many links were generated - and that is how many pages there approx. are. Currently I'm at 404 pages, but I think 150 more will be added until the completion. But there is still the problem of visitors..

I never really thought about the font being a negative side But why not give it shot, maybe I get something better. What font would you suggest me to use? If I start choosing fonts, it will be a disaster I mean, look at the logo font -

OK then try the deviantArt link: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. I don't know what's the problem, I can see the image at the given URL -
Designing a template from scratch can be very hard to me, and all attempts to create a completely new template have failed. However, since I wanted something unique for my new web site (under construction), I just couldn't use a pre-made template. So I decided that the best way to do this would be to edit an existing template. I started with the default Joomla! template, which is Rhuk Solarflare (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/). I wanted a darker theme, so I had a lot to change. After a few days of work I finally got what I needed (and it is hard to notice the resemblance between the old and the new template) - but in Firefox only. Internet Explorer was still making some problems, but I think I've managed to solve them by using !important in my CSS file. Now that it's all complete, all I have to do is tweak it. And that's why I need you. I would like you to take a look at my template and tell me what you would change if you were the author. I want to make something that will suit most people. For now, I will supply you with a screenshot only, because I don't want the subdomain to be public. When I get a domain name, I'll give you the link. Until then, check out this address: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

Strange, I didn't notice this one before. It seems like a good host, since I don't see any and on the forums hosted there. Also, there aren't many web sites that offer SMF - it's usually all about phpBB (*vomit*) or IPB 1.2/1.3 (which are legal).I don't know if you noticed, but in the directory, all the forums have one member and one post However, there are forums with more posts, but they are not in the directory, for example music.smfhost.com (but it's still a small one). Unfortunately, we can see that not many people use this service, since a lot of popular subdomains are free, such as pc.smfhost.com and sex.smfhost.com - we would expect these to be taken

Well, I wouldn't say anywhere AdSense isn't anything special, it's just a block of text. Since you are creating a web page on your own, I guess you know the basics. The AdSense code does go between <body></body> tag, but you are supposed to paste it where you want it to appear on the page. So, if you want the ad to be part of the footer, you will paste the code just before the </body> tag. Experiment, you'll get the hang of it quite fast - but don't <- snipped -> !}
