  1. the most basic and the only answer that came to my mind (actually, my frnd's mind. I am too laazy to use mine)  is to find length and then to find the (l-n)th element with o(n2) complexity.

i am interested in your answer.. it's more than a month since you posted your question.  :)

    Ok.. here is my answer...

This is similar to finding the middle element in the link list with slight variation..

    1. Have two pointer initially ( first and second )

    2. move the second pointer alone 5 nodes.

    3. Now move both the pointers one node at a time until the second reaches the end.

when the second reaches the end , the first node will be the 5th last element..

    node * first ,*second;first = second = root;// moves the second ptr 5 nodes..int i =0;while ( (i < 5) && (second != NULL) ){	second = second-> next;	i++;}while( second->next != NULL ){	   first = first->next;	   second = second->next;}return (first) ; // first ptr is the 5th node from the last..

The above solution is same as the one Sanjay gave. This algorithm can be even generalized to find the kth node from the last similarly....

But the answer that i expected is below..

    Just scan the list twice.

You can get the kth element from the last.

This algorithm is known as hare and tortoise algorithm.

  2. There are several economic events that could happen with Microsoft as well as computer standards being changed significantly.

The economic standpoint of Vista will probably cause Microsoft to lose money.

Most games do not work on Vista, but on XP. This causes Microsoft to lose a huge crowd.

A lot of RAM is required to run Vista and it can bug up your system. Again, gamers will stay away from Vista. This also affects developers and programmers.

Other Economic Factors Toward Microsoft in General

Open Source programs becoming abundant. We are seeing that most Microsoft products are becoming replaced by Open Source applications. Firefox, PHP, and C++ are a few examples. I do not know if C++ is open source, but it sure is free. This will cause Microsoft to heavily invest in it's operating system. If the system fails, Microsoft is dead.

Linux and Macs becoming more abundant. I have noticed that a lot of people use Macs and Linux now. My school has Macs as the main computers when before they had PCs.

Bill Gates being stupid. Yes, the lawsuit against Bill Gates certainly isn't helping Vista. Stupid move in my opinion.

Some computer standards are also ruining Microsoft. PHP, Apache, and MySQL are the most popular webservers and are extremely portable. ASP and VBScript are horrible because they really only work in Internet Explorer. This is very annoying.

Yes, I am dissing some of Microsoft's products, but they did have some cool stuff. I am a fan of XP and would choose it over most operating systems. Microsoft Word is great for projects. I can't say much for Notepad because I could make a better web application (Soon to be normal)

Well there are some of my thoughts on Microsoft.

Microsoft is pretty much stable.. In the sense... if something is not working in Vista.. where do you think people go? To mac?

Definitely not. Its XP... which is again a product of Windows and they are still giving updates to Xp.

Guess whats the best part? -- Windows 7 has already started to send ripples in the community. And I am sure they have got bitter experiences and responses from Vista and I am sure this time they have learnt from the past mistakes and the OS will definitely much much better than Vista and also stable.

I do not think they can lose a major chink of the crowd as the alternatives are very less and not very friendly.

Tell me the OS in which you can install the latest PS games seamlessly and start playing? They are countable and on that front Windows is rock solid and so many vendors are dead dependent on Windows.

So... Microsoft is not losing in any front...

  3. Biggs, a 19-year-old Broward College student who suffered from what his family said was bipolar disorder, or manic depression, lay dead on his bed in his father's Pembroke Pines house Wednesday afternoon, the camera still running 12 hours after Biggs announced his intentions online around 3 a.m.

When I opened my yahoo and saw this, it honest to god made me sick. The internet has hit a new low here. Here we all come to the world wide web to learn and enjoy ourselfs and some troubled teen kills himself as people watch and Egg him on! I just hope that this will shut down some of these sites such as Justin TV. Bad enough that everywhere you turn you have pedifiles searching myspace, friendster and all the others. Now this?

Im sorry and maybe this should had been placed in vent. But It really Pisses me off that this 19 year old had to go and end his live for what? So others could watch.

    This is madness.
This news is allover the web and kind of sending waves.
Why the hell is this happening and why the hell he has to commit suicide with audience? - Crazy.!!

  4. I kind of missed the last few days in Xisto and so many things have changed. I will consider the change is for good.
So... now the credit stuff will be closed shortly and we will be moving to myCents. That much i understood.

All i need to know is...
I have a free web hosting account in Xisto. Do i have to register for that again once the credit system expires?
Only now, I registered myself in https://support.xisto.com/ and after reading the forums, I came to know how it works. I think that will get linked to my Xisto account in few hours and i will start accumulating myCents....

HOw easy it is to start over again? - I mean the switching and stuff without my site going down for long?
Do i have to make any changes in DNS and stuff when this transition happens? The whole point is that... these days I am spending less and less time here and do not want to go through the hassle. Hope they make it easier for the members who already have an hosting account. From the record, I believe they will do so...

Also.. I think this is very cool, as more things can be done using the cents i earn... which was not possible using the credits earned.
Thanks Xisto for all you do and for the great ideas. You rock.

  5. Did any of you come across this service called heysan.com. I am not very sure as to what they do.. but they have been spamming many people, my friends which comes from real experience and I am very annoyed at them. They just like that send messages to the contacts from gtalk and believe me I got some 5-10 messages asking me to join the service.. the problem being... the messages from my friends contacts... Some of friends got annoyed and sent me a mail telling that it was not them who sent them.. but the service...

    Hi Guys,

If you get any gtalk ping from your contacts with a similar kind of message.. Ignore it.. Its sending to all the gtalk contacts and spreading like anything.. Dont click the link..

your_email_ID@gmail.com posted a photo of you, untag it here: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

This is very bad for the service...
Then i did some checking... and realized they are good, but this is not a way to get popularity and get hits. If you guys are not doing it, its your responsibility to stop the spammers who use your identity and do it. Else the credibility (if you have something like that... ) of the service will be lost.

    Thanks.

  6. All,I am using bbPress for my personal use (in the sense... to facilitate communication with my friends and college mates.. ). I want to know this...Is there an option to add the below features in the forum...1. Adding polls in topics (though.. only moderators can do it)2. Adding signatures. This should be available to all the users... and in all the posts. I basically tried for such an extension... but did not find the right one... It would be great if someone can point me to such an extension... 3. Who's online stats at the page end, which can give overall stats to the forum. Pretty useful stuff... Tell us how these things can be accommodated and also new extensions if you know which can do these stuff...If you have anything in your mind... let me know. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  7. ok i am going to share this trick with all of you that dont know it ok:
right, what you do it is go into a pub and you challenge someone a game of darts BUT you have to do say to them 3 things:

    1. say that you will double off and they can go straight in scoring.

    2. say that your DOUBLE there score for example if your playing a 401 game and they hit a score of 40 you take of 80 which would leave them with 321 left.

    3. say that IF you win they have to give you Ł10 but if they win you have ot give them Ł100 and everytime you do that to someone that doesnt know the trick they will play you.

the key to this trick is YOU CANT LOSE its impossible to lose because its a con and when the opponent is scoring they cant ever get out because they will allways be left with a odd number so e.g if there on 9 left (coz they will always be on a odd number) the could go for 1 double 4 BUT because there score is being doubled they would hit 1 leaving them with 7 etc always odd they cant get out allowing you to win every time.

so there you go people interested in darts a nice and easy way to make money!

    Ha ha ha..
This is a nice one... But I see a big hole in the beginnning. I knew this already so... not an issues.
Anyways thanks for sharing and making some blood bleed... LOL.. :)

  8. Dogs are my all time favorites. And the sad part is I do not have a dog. My dad did not allow me to have one (the main reason being we lost one dog some years back and that kind of pulled everyone in the family down...). So, there will be a big "NO" when it comes to having a dog in my house.May be I will get one in the future. Hope my love towards them remains the same. :lol:Next to dogs, I would also like to have birds and fishes. Fishes though i used to have... this was back when i was in college.birds, just gives a very natural feeling to the place they live. So i have a special liking towards them.I do not know... but i think i will like anything that lives with me... So... any pet is fine. nothing very wild though.^_^

  9. Do you want to give a try on Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T70 and Canon Digital IXUS 80 IS?
One of my friend was asking me suggestions on getting one of this camera...

    Both are equally good.
When it comes to stylish look and support, Sony is better.
When it comes to camera brand - Cannon is better.

For first time users... you wont find much difference in image quality and stuff.
Its up to you to select one.

here is the link for comparison between sony and cannon. still finding it difficult to choose the right one? go read the reviews in websites.

Read the experts reviews here -- http://www.steves-digicams.com/camera-reviews/sony/dsc-t70/sony-dsc-t70-review.html

  10. I am not hooked to a particular service when it comes to online payment, though there are so many options out there. Most of the time, it will be either a debit or credit card which is acceptable by the service I use online.Sometimes I also use the services via an online banking account like mobile payments, electricity payments and for other utility services.I do have an paypal account which I use very rarely, reason being, most of the sites that provides paypal access also provides credit card access and why take the pain of creating an paypal account. There are some services which will only agree to payments only from a particular service... see checkout (a payment service launched by Google some days back) for example (Some of the Google services, do not remember which one exactly will accept payments only from checkout.. i think the service was Google base. But It might have changed it model now...).There are n number of such 3rd party services pitching in... these days, financial service providers itself like retail banks, try and challenge in these payment services against separate providers... Anyways consumers have options and that is a very good thing to have.

  11. Check the below link. It tells you how the world financial crisis is impacting the IT industry.

    http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

Guess what? In few days, there will be a new tab called "Project Allowance" in the salary slip, which will be half the CTC and will be paid only if you are actually working in a project. So... idle in bench (actually exploited by the company) and being paid fully may not be the case in the future..

Note: This information is true in India and may or may not be applicable in other countries.

  12. I reinstall (restore) windows almost every 2-3 months. What about you??? Seeing the title some would say "I do it daily" and some others "How to reinstall?". Let's see the poll results. Linuxers, see you in other post.

Reinstalling windows is a daily chore for the students studying computers. They have to switch a lot of softwares, compilers etc etc. Windows as we know, will not tolerate a whole lot of (Un)installations and will ultimately slow down the whole system. This is not the case with Linux. Just consider this, I installed Red Hat WS 3(the older version which was lurking around with me) a year ago, full installation (4GB). The boot time initially was terribly slow. Because by default Linux runs everything during startup, even the sendmail daemon(it takes around 10 seconds) which is not needed for normal use. Then I read articles about linux and disabled all those stuff. The change was just superb and still haven't reinstalled it. Back to windows..

I actually wanted to give you some tips on reinstalling windows. Especially the professionals, say web developers using dreamweaver, flash, local apache, php. They setup nice settings to suit there needs. After this why reinstall??? Forget those students, what if your system gets virus, ok you're using the anti*** but they don't always help. For example some days ago my system was hacked by some .scr scripts. The result, my whole folders in root of every drive(even C:) was hidden and also creating there respective blank folders(basically .scr extension with folder images). I knew it immediately because I always keep the settings "Show hidden files", "show system files", "show extension of known file types" checked. Amazingly the script took back its work after rebooting. But now I wasn't able to see hidden files and extension. It did all sorts of registry edits. I had to reinstall... Oops again off track, now back to the tips...

    Reinstalling Windows (The good way):

First method:This one is a common one. You install some software like Norton Ghost and make up a backup of freshly installed system (Fresh windows with essential softwares installed) and burn it to dvd. Now whenever the system crashes you just restore it with dvd. Check those tons of articles for more info on this.

Second method: I worked out this trick which I thought will never work. The basics are same you install fresh copy of windows with essential softwares like antivirus. Now you archive everything in your C: drive like .zip(it takes time) and either move the archive to another drive or burn it to dvd. NOw when odd thing happens you just pop in some live cd distros of linux which support the fat partition viewing and format the C: drive(you can use win cd's fdisk for formating) and restore it with the archive which you placed in other drive or dvd. Voila! Isn't that fantastic. It saves you money buying software like Norton Ghost. Any opinions, help request about this trick are welcome.

If you don't want to reinstall windows there are some rollback softwares available which restore windows to previous state in case of power failure (hoping this is not your case) or other problems. There is also one software (anybody point out that please) which disregards any changes during a session including folders created or softwares installed. This one is very useful for internet cafes.

That's enough from me. Now its your turn to tell everything you wanted to about this topic.

there used to be a time when i used to install and uninstall the OS once a month. That was back in college, where i use to try so many stuff. Having dual boot was having fun. In fact having multiple OS in your machine was a geeky thing to do.... Yes it was.

It used to be fun... to format the system... installing the new OS and trying out all new softwares launched and crashing the machine again. But it a learning phase and used to try stuff.

These days... the number of stuff I try has reduced a lot. May be I install an OS once in a year and forget about its existence... provided it does not trouble me much... but i have never stepped back in trying out new softwares... but a bit cautious these days. I have a jinx with worms... and trojans. So, I want a guarantee that the software I am about to install is error free and not a malicious one. Otherwise, I am not an orthodox and like trying stuff from all corners of the web.

    Next question

What is the OS that I have recently?

Windows XP and EDUBUNTU - Dual boot.

    Softwares

That's a very big list. Will try and compile it when I am relatively free.

  13. Hmmm...Viruses are spreading at lightening speed. No technology in computer industry is developing at that pace.Even the security technologies itself. Hard to believe..but its a fact. Really a miracle... And none of the antivirus
softwares are perfect.....If one could detect a virus, another couldn't, and vice-versa. And different companies gives
different names to the same virus. What the hell is this?

Antivirus companies are now focusing more on making profits than eliminating viruses. Even they may be happy with
the spreading of thees viruses, without whom they don't exist  People like us, who have some computer knowledge are staying away from some viruses(at least). But what about other people? They don't know what happened to their system,
if some virus attacked. They don't know how to get rid of that. And finally they have to spend some money to solve their problem. They are paying for someone else's evil happiness. Why should they?

But the term virus is very popular today. Even people who don't know anything about virus, thinking that their system had
    infected by virus.
The funny thing is, even if some hardware problem arises in their system, they think that its due to some virus. How sad?

Can we do something? How do we educate these innocent people? Give your opinions......

Its tough to stop viruses. Because some are made and some come by mistake. So... its not easy to stop them.
But its possible to be safe from them.

Install a very good antivirus software and update it as frequently as possible with the the new virus definition database and keep your system secure.

  14. Please read through the following points very carefully & don't send emails and post rumors related to Medical ailments, AIDS in this case without having complete knowledge about it (even partial knowledge could be grossly dangerous... which i can see in the forum ).* HIV - Human Immuno deficiency virus (virus) requires *ONLY* *Blood or Semen* as medium to transmit from one body to another. This is proven. Some people debate about Saliva. Read through the next point. You will get a picture.* HIV (AIDS causing virus) cannot be transmitted even through *Saliva*(mucous) i.e . even if HIV-infected patient coughs or smooches and another person is exposed to his sputum (cough) or saliva, the virus still can not transmit because concentration of virus particles in sputum is almost NIL & exposure to air anyway kills virus in fraction of seconds. In one of the interviews i heard a doctor say that a bucket of saliva has to be transferred between parties for possibility of HIV virus to be transported... funny... huh...* This is a very rare situation and has not happened much to my knowledge. In case an HIV-infected person gets an injury (like the cut in below mentioned story) and he is bleeding, the virus can transmit to another person only if another person has a cut/wound in his body & that too when blood from both person comes in contact with each other* (this is also very very rare unless bleeding is very high) and not otherwise. Direct contact is not possible most of the time.* HIV can never survive in any other liquid medium also other than blood or semen. There was this rumor that existed... where HIV exists in food items that came from the one who cooks it and eating the contaminated food will bring you HIV, which is a complete *BLEEP*. So there is no truth in as it cannot exist in such mediums.* Will drinking of the infected blood cause the infection/ disease? - Even if one drinks an HIV infected blood (or semen) (which is again a very very rare case) of someone (ingest through Intestinal track or the digestive system), the HIV virus can not survive in the acidic (HCL acids present inside the stomach) pH of stomach. Highest extent of acidity is 0 (practically not possible) so imagine 1 as pH which is in our stomach. (This pH can burn your own finger in less than a second if you dip in that acid). So ignore this possibility too...* Exposure of the HIV virus to air for relatively less time will kill it for sure(hence people carrying needles and infecting others). Even if blood from a wound (of infected person) dries up (clotting of the blood), HIV is no more alive and can not infect anyone else* Transmission of HIV is considered ONLY an INFECTION and not the disease itself. i.e.entrance of virus in one's body. It DOES NOT MEAN AIDS right away.* A person infected with HIV (which is after the entrance of the virus) can progress to a condition of AIDS (which is actually a disease) only after so many years.. so if you have heard of rumors of AIDS tomorrow or the day after... its all crap.* Ok. I have heard that its not HIV that kills a person but something else. What is this all about?Yes. Its true. Its not the virus that kills the infected person but other diseases that attacks the body due to lack of immunity. * Then how is AIDS a killer?Yes. right question. Because, HIV is responsible for the death of your immune system in the first place. That is what HIV do. fight against your immune system.. that is the white blood cells and kill them and makes your body vulnerable for other diseases.* How can i be safe from the disease?--> Safe sex--> Safe blood transfusion (check before taking and giving)--> Avoid blood contact during an accident/ chances--> clean habits.--> Right information like this one. No rumors.

  15. I think so its personal. If you want to have many... go ahead and have as many as you want. Law? - stop worrying about it... as if everyone holds to it like life. I have to say this... whats happening is polygamy has been made illegal and prostitution has been made legal. Why take the pain of supporting someone when I can go and get what I want so easily without all the hassle. what say?forget about right and wrong. I cant even imagine that this is not happening. Its happening in every damn part of the globe at all scales.

  16. Cool.. I am sure going to have some fun with these plugins. After all I am a big fan of firefox even if it sucks sometimes.... I am purely in for the test drive.I expect some of these features to become part of the next version of Firefox by default and do not want to hang over with extensions. That being said... I will try these extensions and give my feedback... so that when it becomes part of firefox, its as expected and works.

  17. One of my friend recently asked the basic difference between Investment banking and traditional banking....

Can anyone explain what is the difference between Investment banking and Traditional banking?

Traditional banking is the normal bank accounts we have. Like, put your money in the bank and they act as a security and you will get only the normal interests (decided by RBI in our case, FED bank in US). Investment banking is entirely different. Here, people who are having so much money (money in excess which will yield only less interest if in Banks) will invest their money and get higher returns. For example, If i have more money instead of taking the pain of investing in share market, buying properties etc. I will give to investment banks and they will do the money management and give me higher returns when compared to traditional banks. And FYI... GS and JP Morgan are not becoming Traditional banks, but Bank holding companies which is a little different -- http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/.

Thats because, these companies have made little profit, but meager chance to come out of this crisis and in need of so much liquid cash, which obviously FED will have or other traditional banks will have... (that's y Ameri. Bank gave a hand to Merill Lynch). Why? - Traditional Banks will always have Liquid cash. Check out the the 2 links in this post 2 understand y exactly this financial crisis and what is sub prime lending --

I am sure... I have not explained everything in full. Someone can elaborate on this more.

  18. The google chrome browser is good... But still lots of things have to be added to the box fr it to catch up with the big players in the market. It has just started... so we can expect a lot of new features getting added to it in the days to pass.. having my fingers crossed. Also, its very fast and cool.I don think its going to be a big blow to IE... because they will not shift that easily. Its only the people who are using firefox, will be shifting. Basically the power users. Lets wait and see how the browser usage trend changes in the future.

  19. For those of you... who really reall

Ok... I am sharing to Xisto an easy to use image file to brush up your understanding of database normalization. Everytime I have to understand the concepts, I have to go through the complete text and its a little hard to do that... Had some requirement recently, and I thought I will prepare something like this and refer to, when there are future requirements. This is not exhaustive and very detailed. Helps to get some basic understanding. Prior knowledge about the databases, structure will help in understanding the complete concepts in a detailed way.

    post-50968-1221479456_thumb.png

Here is the PDF format of the same file for your convenience.
Created using freemind, a free mind mapping tool. Its awesome. I have started to use this extensively now. I have been recommending many people about this software. Choice of many....

If you have some doubts on this, go ahead and post it in the thread... Will try to answer them when time permits.
