  1. So far as your email accounts are concerned it is the credibility of the service provider that matters the most. I have tried out few other free email service providers, but, their services are not consistent. You may find one fine moring that your important email account has been deleted and you can do nothing but to create a new email account. Luckily, the other free service providers which I have tried out, do not seem to be as much popular as Yahoo or AOL. So, I could use the same username even after it got deleted for some surprising reason ( obviously, not because of inactivity). But renowned providers like Yahoo will never do that but for your inactivity as per their stipulated rules. Your email accounts are actually the key to your existence in the internet. So use of reputed email service providers appears to have definite reason. I, personally, have suffered a lot with few other free email service providers. Obviously, there are good providers ( other that Yahoos), but one must be extremely careful while selecting FREE service providers ( other than Yahoo or such big names).Regards,Sid
  2. What's the point of this though? I mean, it's cool and nifty and all, but what about the price to power it up O_O;; Wouldn't it waste a lot of electricity, and money of course, just to leave it on 24 hours a day?! Sorry, I find it to be an amazing 'toy' and all, but for the common consumer, it's a waste. If I had to rank it in 2 ways it would be :8.5/10 for nice idea5/10 for the ratio of want to price.
  3. I sort of agree with you there buddy Just Half Life 2 is fun and I like it very much, but Counter Strike rules the Half Life series here everyone. Most obvious that shows Counter Strike better than Half Life is how the multiplayer is much more concisive with people, usually ones that are good and/or you know personally. I find that the Half Life 2 multiplayer is sort've like a a 'deathmath' realm, along the lines of Unreal Tourny and Quake. If it's trying to compete with Unreal's next generation or current generation, it's barely standing up to it in my opinion. Though I do say Half Life 2 multiplayer is better than Unreal and Quake etc, I'm just basing this on most opinions I've heard online. Counter Strike is more of a army game, something like Medal of Honor, or Call of Duty, but slightly more arcade-ish, more fake along the lines of Half Life 2, but not much! It's a very balanced game, making it unsurprisingly better than just about every multiplayer FPS online game around. I can't really say if Source is the best, but playing version 1.6 is still the best ever. Though Half Life 2 is a great game, Counter Strike win's over it.
  4. Although I have not tested your code, but I think, due to unwanted resize, your layout is getting distorted. If that be the case, try to use <TABLE> and put all the outputs in <TD> $field_name </TD> tag.I appreciate that the suggestion I have placed here is a mere hint, and not the actual script, obviously based on the assumption that you are facing a layout related problem. Regards, Sid
  5. Thanks everybody for your interests, suggestions and comments. Let me directly come on to the topic. While testing some sites for W3C compliance, I found that almost none is cent percent valid. And it has also been reported by the members of different other forums that they had the same experience. So I think, one may not bother too much if there are few errors in their webpages. But I don't want to mean that you can ignore such errors. Now here is a good suggestion for those using scripting/programming languages. If someone in this forum is using such an editor for PHP scripts, will you mind telling the name/link of that editor. It'll be of great help for me.Now comes few views regarding search engine ranking. So far as search engine ranking goes, as it has already been pointed out, they really care least for valid HTML till date. But you never know what will happen in the near future even. Finally, I have a question, and frankly speaking, it may appear to be meaningless to you all, but it has bothered me a lot. I would like to spell out it in little more details. While validating my site for correct HTML, I really could not find a suitable <!DOCTYPE> declaration. My site uses lots of PHP Scripts. So I used the following declaration : <!DOCTYPE php PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD php 4.01 Transitional//EN"> And I observed two things. 1. My CSS got distorted, that means, each <DIV> layer seems to be shifted by few pixels. 2. The brightness of the image appears to improve. So far as the first observation goes, I corrected it by changing the positions of the <DIV> layers, but regarding the second observation, I am really confused. Now on changing the <!DOCTYPE> declaration back to : <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/; - both the position of <DIV> layers and the brightness of images were restored. Also I tried to validate few other websites having PHP Scripts ( few popular forums) and found that these are not W3C. Now my question is that, whether there is any other <!DOCTYPE> declaration for pages containg PHP Scripts? And is there any site that will validate my PHP pages? Once again, I must say that my question as well as observations may appear funnny but I am helpless. <!DOCTYPE> declaration for PHP pages has really bothered me a lot. Before leaving, just one more link for those who actually intend to validate their sites for W3C. W3.org provides the necessary guideline for selection of proper document type for your HTML pages. 6. There's quite a few good resources about Web Designing here in Xisto in a few of our forums you might want to look at, that will help with your checklist.I see no checking for accessibility, in some countries that is discrimination. It's not over here but I still think designers should use their talents to cater for everyone equally.Cheers,MC
  7. Knoppix is a Live CD there's quite a difference between bootable and Live CD, a Live CD is bootable but runs an entire Operating System from it, e.g. booting DOS from a floppy is a similar concept except Knoppix runs a lot more programs and is graphical (terminal if you want too). What Knoppix does is the whole Operating System runs straight off the CD. All the programs you use etc, all from the CD, the Hard Drive is not touched unless you allow it to use a part of your hard drive as a swap partition, or your perform some sort of File I/O on the drives yourself. There are many Live CD distributions around, you can get Ubuntu which can be shipped for free to you if you go to their website (comes with a Live CD and a HDD Install CD), the problem though you may have to wait a few weeks before you see the CDs, but if you have slow internet, this might be an option.Otherwise you could download Knoppix, Ubuntu or the other Live CDs that are around. It might pay to look at all the Live CDs though, there might be one that's just built for Web Site testing, in which might shave a few 100 MBs off the CD so it'd be smaller. If you're wondering how they can store 2GB of programs on a 700MB CD, then it's the use of their compression technique. Basically everything on the CD is compressed and uncompressed into your RAM (like using a RAM Disk) and if needs be, using your allocated swap partition if you chose to have one. Before grabbing it though, check out if it has the packages that you require for testing, e.g. Galeon and Konqueror, since it uses KDE, Konqueror would definitely be on it, I'm not sure about Galeon though. There's really only minor differences from Galeon/Konqueror compared to Firefox, as long as you leave newer technology behind (web technology takes about 3 or more years to be implemented into browsers, sooner if commercial demand is great). At first Knoppix might be hard to navigate, but if you're only going to use it for that purpose, then you'll find the browsers you want in the Internet folder, which you'll find by clicking the KDE cogs/gears (like Windows Start button).Cheers,MC
  8. How much Linux experience do you have?First two errors, file does not exist, you should verify if that is true or not. Now the question is, do you really need that in your script, if not, then where it checks for /proc/scsi/scsi and /proc/bus/usb/devices you should test for the condition that they exist before trying to use them, e.g. if(file_exists('/proc/scsi/scsi')) { ... then that part of the code; } and the same with the other. Another reason could be CentOS may have a different file structure, so paths maybe different. The other errors are all related to permission errors and possibly why those other two files don't exist because the script was denied. It's quite a security issue to allow permission for your script to be dealing with it this way, I would suggest using something like using suPHP.Cheers,MC
  9. I prefer good music. I think the rap vs. rock is just so much *BLEEP*. So many "rockers" hate rap music because of 50 cent, eminem....etc. (and their likes). And some "rappers" hate rock music becaue of fall out boy, nickelback..... etcSo I think we should just stop putting music (among other things in labels).Unnsteinn
  10. The problem is that some bands have a tendency to think less about their music and more about the money if they go mainstream.
  11. can't you just get a crack? I have a licensed version of CS and my luck, it was a present. So, I guess it is a licensed version, but I don't know now. Cause the crack was included to the cd itself. And plus I've read in the instructions that i should use a crack to activate it, there's no activation code. Though I don't know if it's right to recommend to use a crack...
  12. OMG. I live with my mp3 and I always listen to music on a very high volume. And I can't listen to it when the volume is "normal". When I listen to music I shouldn't hear other people's conversations and I don't talk at all. That obviously means that I will die deaf and blind, lol.Maybe I should start using my old and forgotten walkman again...
  13. Sarah81 Thank you! However I've already tried it all...and plus people steal not from the blogs but from the artfolio websites. shiv Thanks, I guess I should try it. organicbmx People steal ehmm....art? Well they still blends, collages, layouts etc. And usually people put their copyright on them, but still, they are a lot of ways of erasing the copyright and putting your own name on them. So I'm kinda confused, but as I said I really don't care if people steal what I do, cause if you publish smth in the Internet that 100% means that it will be stolen or just taken without your permission. I could remake all my stuff and resize them, but people will find another many ways of using them, for example for making icons. Uh, perhaps it's just human nature and all we have to do is just live with it.
  14. The key is to write valid (X)HTML/CSS from the start, instead of developing your site then fixing it after it's been completed. This also helps when scripting too, making sure that what you output dynamically is also valid. As for search ranking, it may improve your rank, because you're capable of accepting a much wider audience if your site is accessible for everyone, which may bring you more traffic because you cater for everyone's needs. Most companies don't even care about having a site that conforms to standards, but if you can tell them how valid (X)HTML/CSS can increase their revenue, lower their expenses and draw in more customers and in the long run, make it easily maintainable, then you'll be doing a lot better than most the web designers I've come across.Just remember, comply to the standards, and try to keep it valid, there might be some things that don't validate that you use, I'm positive there would be an alternative to it, because I've rarely come across many problems in my time, but I do await CSS3 which will make creating sites how you want, easier.Cheers,MC
  15. I'm not sure if this is the right place for posting this, but I'll give it a shot anyway.I have a problem with copycats. There are a lot of people who steal my and my friends stuff. Well I don't really care myself, but it really bothers some of my friends. They all disalbe right-clicking, however people still can copy their stuff using Print Screen, so I'm just interested, is there any script/code or anything that can disable print screen? Is it possible? Thanks in advance.
  16. There were times when I searched all the net to learn PHP. It seemed sooo difficult. But then I found these sites http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ I hope you'll find them useful.
  17. I was looking for something like this site, thanks a lot for sharing. It's really good source for inspiration and I found some useful tutorials. And yay they have psd files so people can edit those. But as for me I hate using free templates. Firstly, there is always something in the template that I don't like. Secondly, I hate writing on my page that the layout was taken somewhere else. And the third reason is that it's obvious that there are A LOT of people who use just the same template as you do.But the idea of making sites with free templates is wonderful. A lot of people out there can't use any graphics programs and those templates are very useful. And plus, as I mentioned, it's great inspiration source, especially when you need a layout change asap.
  18. It is told that valid HTML code is the 'right' way to build website. It is also said that valid HTML allows for greater accessibility, cross-browser compatability, and might effect search engine rankings. I have got a link wherein you can validate your site for right HTML. It is here. This is the W3C Markup Validation Service, a free service that checks Web documents in formats like HTML and XHTML for conformance to W3C Recommendations and other standards.
  19. I don't get what you mean... You say that he left the battery in the laptop while its fully charged and the computer running? I don't see anything wrong with that. Unless I'm missing something, which I'm sure I am since I don't understand what you're getting at...
  20. I found this game both odd weird and pretty neat at the same time O_oIt has these pretty common yet original gameplay that seems to catch my attention. I was playing it a few times at my friend's house just for the heck of it. Got me on for about 3 hours before I got off. Thought about buying it, but then I realized I had too much games that I haven't played yet and buying another one would just add to that stack. So if you don't have any games to play, then this would be pretty good to get just for the heck of it. If you're in the case I'm in, where you have more than enough games to play at disposal, then either get it to add to your unplayed stack, or stick with what you got haha.
  21. As a long time Fedora Core user, and now Fedora Core 5 user, I still would recommend SSH over Telnet. I would suggest turning off SELinux if you haven't done so but it may cause problems, even in FC5, customising policies for every single aspect is not what I am wanting to do, and is just as bad as running scan disk and defrag on a windows box, it's too time consuming. First I would check if you have OpenSSH-Server: rpm -qa | grep openssh If that doesn't return openssh-server, then I'd use yum to install it: su -c "yum -y install openssh-server openssh openssh-clients openssh-askpass" Hopefully that will also resolve the needed dependancies from the repositories that you download from. Next would be starting the sshd server First check that it's not already running: pgrep sshd If any PID numbers return, it's running, if not do as below: su -c "/sbin/chkconfig --level 2 sshd on"su -c "/sbin/service sshd start" Just to explain the above, we make sure that sshd will be started as a service next time, we then start it manually (one off thing to do if you make it a service to run when your computer starts). Next would be testing it out: ssh -l YourUserName localhost If all goes well you should be logged in as YourUserName@localhost You can also use it for SCP/SFTP using clients that support it, as well as if you're a GUI user, you might be able to track down a GUI frontend for SSH or a GUI SSH Client. And before I forget, make sure you configure your firewall to allow SSH (usually port 22). Cheers, MC
  22. This is an old post, but I still highly recommend using XAMPP (WAMPP/LAMPP) https://www.apachefriends.org/index.html as the best packed server goodies for Windows (though they also do a Linux package, I think configuring it all under Linux is easier to do from scratch). It may however have more than what you want though, e.g. FTP Server, Web Statistics, Mail Transport Agent, etc. Cheers, MC
  23. If this is the case, then 'a' can be any number except 0 or 1 and possibly negative numbers although I never checked:e.g. If a = 5 then c = a - 1 and b = a + ca = 5, b = 9, c = 4orIf a = 4, c = a + 1, b = a + cThe equation I'm using is:a^2 - ab + b^2/c^2 = c^2 - bc + b^2/c^25^2-5*9+9^2/4^2 = 4^2-9*4+9^2/4^2I don't know how to put it, but 'a = c' does not work with my equation other than 'a' could be replaced with 'c' as long as 'c' follows the rules of 'a - 1' or 'a + 1' and that 'b' remains 'a + c', in quadratic equations you can have two answers, although I'm trying to think how this came about, could it be a graphed on a 3D cube?Hopefully someone can make sense of this, but that's it for me, basically without the additional added to it, we get a^2 - ab = c^2 - bc which evaluates to true as well.Cheers,MC
  24. Well everything seems to check out right, except I found those algebraic equations hard to interpret, here's something that may help interpret why this maybe so:a^2 - 2ab / c + ( b^2 ) / ( c^2 ) = ( c - ( b / c ) )^2Wherea = 3, b = 5 , c = 2 and ^x is used to represent powers by x (a number)So in that above equation, what you're trying to prove is that:a = cAnd it's quite obvious, in that relationship, considering there's no 'a' equivalent on the RHS, so in solving this equation to it's simpliest form, it's possible, you'll get a = c.I haven't proved this, however I've looked at the above post and can see why it would be considered this, Ramanujam was an excellent Mathematician, could say he was obsessed/artistic with numbers.Cheers,MC
  25. Try this one line Javascript code. Place this code at the end of dynamically generated pages.( i.e., once the WHILE LOOP for fetching record is complete) <a href="#" onClick="window.open('/downloader.php?query=<?php echo $sql?>','mywindow','width=400,height=350,left=300,top=300,screenX=300,screenY=300')">Down load CSV!</a> To run this Javascript code accurately, just copy and paste the code as it appears here. Otherwise, you will have to waste too much time in getting the required output just like me!This will open a new window containing the page downloader.php and a query string $query which will contain the query to be executed later on. In the downloader.php file, just get the required query using: $query=$_GET["query"]; Now connect to the Database as before. Fetch required records using $query, put it in the CSV file ( i.e. $new_file, as mentioned earlier) .Finally, in the same downloader.php file, put a line of code which will allow your visitor to download the selected records in CSV format. echo "<a href =\"$new_file\">Click here to download</a>"; Please let me know whether it worked for you or not. Regards, Sid
