  1. I am having exactly the same problem. I initially used a wireless router, which allowed both PC's to access the internet. However, I use a VPN connection on my desktop to access my work LAN, and I couldn't get this to work through a router at home. I then tried implementing an ad-hoc network and although both compters can see each other and share peripherals, the laptop cannot access the internet through the desktop. I have checked Microsoft's recommendations at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ but I still can't get internet access on the laptop. Any further ideas?
  2. Hello everyone. My name is Elaine. Eaq is an acronym. I've been to many forums but I'm likewise glad to be here and tackle with a new community and new people. Aside from the web hosting, I hope to get to contribute somehow to Xisto. I think it's a humble company and many have given rather brighter opinions about its services so it's nice to be a part of it.See you all in the forums. B)El
  3. The funny thing is, Yahoo! doesn't even have to have unlimited resources to pull this off. They simply rely on the fact that people require relatively "limited storage space" from their email. We can look at it this way: today, 80% of all email users can fill 1 GB of email storage space (which is a serious exaggeration). Let's say that, 5 years later, 80% will fill 50 GB! THAT's when Yahoo! might start facing trouble. Their claim of "unlimited storage space" will be put to the test then. But then again, in 5 years, storage devices will have been much bigger and much cheaper, so 50GB then could very well be compared to 1GB now. And Yahoo would still be safe
  4. BEFORE YOU READ ANY FURTHER: The market of "Domain Name Registration" is swarming with many great registrars. If you're already dealing with one and satisfied with it, there's probably no need for you to read this. Although Dynadot offers a very good service, there's nothing extraordinary enough about it to make you change your current registrar. But if you're not satisfied with your current registrar or you don't have one yet, then this review might prove useful. ---------- Two months ago - on the 20th of May to be exact - I stumbled upon a Domain Name Registrar called Dynadot. I was searching for a registrar which accepts "less-common" methods of payment, e.g. PayPal, MoneyBookers, etc. I couldn't find many, but Dynadot certainly looked like an interesting option, so I clicked on its link thinking that I'd probably just take a quick look, get disappointed, then click the BACK button in search for another option. Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised Although Dynadot offers a few supplementary services alongside its domain name related services, I'm not going to discuss them here since I haven't tried them myself. I'll just focus on what I have tried, which is domain name registration and administration services. First of all, here's a list of their prices for all new domain name registrations: They also offer a domain privacy feature, through which you can hide your contact information from spammers, for a yearly sum $2.00 per domain. Now, here's a list of their FREE features which are included with every domain registration: ---------- A couple of paragraphs back, I mentioned that I found Dynadot while searching for a domain name registrar which accepted less-common methods of payment. I personally used my MoneyBookers* account to register 7 domain names since then. On average, a domain name registration with Dynadot took less than 1 minute -- sometimes 2 minutes! I have to admit, it might be silly, but seeing the ENTIRE of process of registering a domain name done in less than a minute was pretty impressive to me Here's a list of all payment methods supported by Dynadot: Credit Card -- Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and JCB Paypal Moneybookers Money Order/Cashiers Check Personal Check ---------- Personally, I've had a great customer experience with Dynadot for the past 2 months. Their service is impressively prompt, easy, configurable, and it doesn't need a genius to figure out how to use all the features. If I were to rate it, I'd certainly give it a 10/10, because I honestly can't find anything wrong with it. I even discovered that NamePros.com, THE Web site for anything related to domain names, has rates it 4 out of 4 in features, value, usability, and customer service. You can find the full review thread here. Finally, I'd just like to clarify that I'm in no way affiliated with Dynadot! I neither work for them nor get compensated for referring new customers to them. I'm simply one of their appreciative customers who are trying to share a good thing. Have a great domain name registration experience Notice from WeaponX: I don't think referral links are allowed here. Referral ID and footnote removed. If you intend to copy stuff from other sites, you should learn how to use the QUOTE tags...
  5. Offering unlimited email storage space is certainly a generous offering. I won't argue that. But being the cynic I am, I'd like to tackle this from a different perspective, namely Yahoo's The Web Hosting market is all too familiar with the claims of unlimited space. I'm sure each and every one of us has seen at least one hosting service provider claiming that it offered unlimited hosting space, whether as a free or a paid service. Unfortunately, most of those providers have gone out of business, most likely due to their lack of proper business sense. Their failure implied that the notion of "unlimited space" or "unlimited bandwidth" or "unlimited anything" is a surefire way to go bankrupt. But if you think about it, unlimited space on the Internet is not such a far-fetched notion. It's not even that risky! Let's move the example to Yahoo. They've been offering 1 GB email accounts for a while now. I have no doubt many of us took them up on that offer and have been using Yahoo Mail accounts for a while now. And I'm willing to gamble good money that no one has ever gone over the 500 MB limit . Heck, the majority probably uses less than 20% of the space they have now. And, of course, Yahoo knows this. They understand that at least 80% of its mail users will never use more than 20% of their storage space (the old 80-20 rule of Pareto's ). So why not offer their users "unlimited" space? Yahoo knows for a fact they don't really have to worry about that, and it sure will look so cool to their users. Plus, even if more people started using their storage spaces, storage devices are getting bigger and cheaper by the day. Please understand that I'm not saying that Yahoo is pulling a cheap trick or anything. Of course not. Actually, they have good business sense. And that alone is reason enough for me to trust their durability... if over a decade of operation and billions of dollars of venture capital hadn't convinced me already, that is .
  6. I suppose that's true... to a certain extent Even though Microsoft practically started out with Xenix, the following Operating System had nothing to do with Unix... in terms of functionality and structure, at least. So, actually, even though Microsoft may have its roots in Unix, Windows doesn't! But then again, it's quite arguable that every operating system has been influenced by Unix. DOS, Windows, Mac OS, Linux, you name it! In many cases, OS creators grafted portions of Unix code onto their OSes. I even heard - though I can't be sure - that the head programmer of Windows 2000 was a Unix veteran who employed every Unix trick he knew into Microsoft's new and promising OS (at the time). That would actually explain the gigantic increase in Windows 2000's stability and performance over its predecessors. Thank you for reminding us of those days, livingston Notice from WeaponX: Put your copied information in text. The words may be reworded around but we still catch them...warning issued

  13. Hello everyone, I'm new to Xisto ^^^ Well, a little about myself.. I am fourteen years old, and in the 8th grade. I enjoy school for the most part (except my technology class- after all, we do poems in it...). I enjoy doing projects, since I usually FDL/GPL them, just to be interesting ^.^ I am a procrastinator, however I seem to get more work done when I don't have to do it, and just do it on my own. (My teacher yelled at me for using OOo that was installed on our school computers, so I went home and wrote an essay of why OOo > M$ Office that night, and gave it to her today). I'm advance placed in Math and Science, which are enjoyable classes. Well, what I like to do: I'm not very good at any languages, but I enjoy programming. I enjoy the occasional Warcraft III game, I like finding new freeware software, I like tinkering with a Linux box, and I <3 almost all electronics. Well, there isn't more about me, except that I'm a nerd.

  23. Hi, My son wanted a shoutbox script so he could give away shoutboxes to all his buddies on all the gaming sites. So I wrote him one and he put it up on http://shoutboxpro.com/rg-erdr.php?_rpo=t He liked it so much and got such great comments that he talked me into selling the script to some of his buddies that wanted to give away free shoutboxes to their other buddies. Anyway, one thing led to another and finally I set up http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ to sell the script to ANYBODY that wants to give away free shoutboxes. As far as I know it's the ONLY script on the internet that allows you to host shoutboxes for other people. There's lots of shoutbox scripts but there isn't one that allows you to give away shoutboxes to other people (that's why I wrote the script for my son in the first place). Since the site has been up I've gotten about 60 orders from the 500 or so people that have visited. My question to you, as a reader of this forum, is... would you buy the shoutbox script from http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ If not, why? Anything that you could tell me to help me improve the site would be greatly appreciated. Please be as specific as possible. Thanks, Vernon
