  1. One of the reasons that AOE3 is slightly better is that it has a unit cap on any spectaculaly good units (like the frigates, or mortar ships) which half prevents the technique of upgrade, build lots of the best unit and wipe out the enemy, while they do the same, but doesn't get rid if it completely, so meaning you have to build lots of different units and then attempt to arrange them so they don't get wiped out. However, this can sometimes get annoying, since once you build your ships, they sail out, blow both sides to pieces, and then you spend the next five minutes rebuilding them....because both sides can build just as fast, there is this continuous cycle won by whoever can click faster...not really the point of a good rts game. However, AOE2 and AOE 3 are still both awesome games, whic really do deserve alot of credit!
  2. Yeah: it is set in World War 2 France and you (in the campaign) follow the route of 101st airbourne division through various battles on their way. However, it is not all based on airbourne stuff, since through the campaign you gradually get the options to upgrade infantry or tank routes aswell, as part of the commander point scheme, and so in the multiplayer, there is no real reference to being 101st airbourne unless you choose that route. Also though in multiplayer, you have the chance to also play as axis (basically germany) which is less specific in terms of "who you are"As a game, I strongly recommend it if you like any rts games, as it does have all the good points of them, accompanied by stunnong graphics and realistic gameplay/physics engine!
  3. Again, I would agree with all of you: quake 3's gameplay does outstrip quake 4's by quite some way: but the graphics on quake4 are still state of the art.Since quake 3 was pretty much trying to challenge unreal tournament though (single "multiplayer" action) it does make this harder, since they aren't really the same game: rather they are only sharing the title and charachters: quake 3 isn't designed to have a plot which fits in anywhere with the other quakes...However, quake 4 could claim to have a plot: timeline, which does make it different...Overall though I think I would probably prefer quake 3: gameplay is so much more important then graphics in this sort of game, but....If they could mix quake 4 graphics with quake 4 gameplay, then there is no doubt it would be a more awesome game....quake 5 anyone?
  4. I just used a website which spooled out gmail invites...they did have 3 million to spare, and since I "donated" one back again, I thought it was quite a good idea!
  5. I like the new style of phpbb3, as it looks modern, but as flajcsi touched on, I wouldn't use it at the moment, not at least until it comes out of beta, mainly because there are no mods, styles or virtually anything available for it at the moment, so unlees you are willing to take a couple of days to edit the old styles, it isn't really worth using it yet. While there are some extra functions built in, it doesn't have many of the custom mods which I've then tweaked for phpbb2, and it would be far easier to tweak pre-made mods, as opposed to rewrite them from scratch, so...I might consider it if there is an easy upgrade route from 2 to 3, but I'm afraid i'll be sticking with phpbb2 for quite a long time yet!
  6. I quite like the concentric circles (but not the colour scheme, sorry), but perhaps not so rigid, more "flowy" with streams in circles like: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ or maybe even similar to http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. This is more the sort of style you were looking for I suppose, but admittedly, they are ALOT harder to make, but they do suit your site... I think that your site doesn't want a "rigid" logo but more "glowing", as I've said as it doesn't fit with the style: it should also be a pale blue/green to match your current color theme. More of the idea http://www.rpgamer.com/games/ff/ff7/graphics/ending/end.jpg might work And sorry that they are all Final Fantasy VII screenshots, but it was the only thing that really worked
  7. I think that it might be a little too unstable for that...O.K. petrol explodes, but that is only because it is put in special high oxygen, high pressure circumstances, but usually fuel should only burn otherwise. Also the nature of it means that if you drove through a puddle, and your tank had a small leak your vehicles might blow up.I can see where you are coming from, and perhaps it could be used alongside a hydrogen fuel cell in some weird and wacky way, but still the most important thing in fuels is the density to energy ratio: i.e. how much powerdo you get from 1 kilo/2 lbs of fuel...the higher it is, the more efficient the vehicle is.Good idea, but needs some work
  8. You might want to look at http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/1595 for your shout box: admittedly I haven't tried it but it look like it has everything that you need: the configurable viewing and editing. Perhaps harder is removing the old chat box, but if you only have chat.php it shouldn't be too hard. As for installing, all mods come with installation documents in the package, but I highly recommend you install "Easymod", available from http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?sid=&f=15 . Mod's usually need you to do three things: install the files, edit previous files, and setup the the sql database. Easymod can automatically do the first two, saving upto hours on installing. All the rest requires is directing your browser to the sql install file! Just PM me or post back if you need anymore help, but it really is quite easy
  9. Having just played the full game, what can I say: this is a truly great game!It really is a revolutionary game: no more dying! Incredible! It really does take out the annoying "reloading from the last save point"Whilst the portal physics, while quite fun is not really that different, since moving from room to room by portal, is identical to moving via doorways. However, the bending of physics rules is the funnest part: wall walking, shifting of walls and floors is funny: and walking on extremely small planetoids is really weird and quite fun!Overall this game is really good, perhaps not quite as scary as advertised, but as an action game, it should become a classic, just for its uniqueness
  10. I also love the Command and Conquer series: they really are brilliant, but my favourite is still Generals.I also love all of the Age of Empires series, but at the moment Company of Heroes is absolutely fantastic! Alongside the Warhammer series there are really great fun to play, which in RTS is far more important then graphics: however, Company of Heroes has high quality grapics and the realism of physics for AOE 3 and Company of Heroes is really quite incredible.
  11. Most men are: what you see is what you get: If they stare blatently at women, it usually isn't because they are trying to remember where they have seen you before! We also do like pleasent suprises... even if we don't show that!I agree with Striker with most of what he says aswell: a girl must be ready listen to her guy, she can't be too plain but not too flirty: there is nothing worse then a girl who flirts with her boy friend's friends!
  12. I tend to use basic templates which I then embellish a lot more in dreamweaver, and edit the pictures in photoshop. However, I like to create pictures and graphics with Xara as they can create some pretty nice effects which photoshop can't replicate!
  13. I thought the point of this was to encourage people to christianity, not to put them off from sheer disgust! It really does blind you though....I would understand if it was just a banner at the top of the page, some adverts at the top of the page are pretty horrific, but this is pretty ridiculous!
  14. I can see the logic behind it: it is a fairly big deterrent to stop people from doing "annoying" crimes all the time..... especially since it is so hard to get a thief to pay inconvenience charges: where do you expect him to get the money? It is sort of a good idea, in that sense, but also it is rather harsh for someone to get prison for life for minor crimes, and on top of this it gives no chance for someone to change....If he was forced to work/pay his rent to make sure he wasn't any cost to tax payersHowever, in England where I live, this is not such a good idea at all since the prisons are too full: even if he did get a life sentence, he would be released after a couple of years to make room for the murderers....the current government really has no idea!
  15. As a site, it looks quite good: the grey theme works quite well with it. (Personally I prefer phpbb but I won't go there :-p)I highly recommend you break the "Games" forum into sections by genre, so RTS, FPS, MMORPG, Adventure etc. as otherwise it will soon become unreadable. Also the "need help" could possibly form the basis of a "support" topic, where people post help for the site, for their consoles, or (more for the pc) problems with getting games to work. You also might want a specific post about the money system (perhaps add an announcements topic, as opposed to News) as how it works is a little unclear...even with you trying to explain it here!Other then that, good job
  16. If you want a service which allows hotlinking, try http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ the speed you download from them is not exactly the fastest speed you could imagine, it does however offer 25GB of space and 50GB of bandwidth. As with any of the above, it is till not reliable enough to permanently store backups on, however it is a lot of free space: especially useful if you wish to save bandwidth on your website.Unfortunately, it does not allow certain file extensions, but if you are willing to put everything into zip files, this is not a bad choice (I think mp3 files are not allowed sadly, but again, it is sensible to archive it in the first place. While I have not been using this long, so far I have found no other major faults...I'll report back if I do.(Oh and max file size is 750MB, but this is highly unrealistic for you to use anywhere near that!)
  17. I've got a steering wheel as well, and the TOCA series has always been good: the ability to drive so many cars around so few a circuits is brilliant for a driving game! You have the challenge of having to learn different techniques for every car that you drive in: something that allows a driving game to have some form of a plot, and preventing you from just picking the best car and beating everyone with ease.Toca 3 is again a game which means you have to have some skill, but also allows you to refine your technique: so when you start off, driving into every wall in sight is still an option, but by the time you hit the "fast" cars, you need to have improved a lot: no longer using the barriers as a guide around the track...What can I say: I think all the TOCA series are really good!
  18. Whilst Doom 3 is an amazing game: the special effect lighting creates an awesome atmosphere, the plot line of Doom is gradually trailing downhill: I can't see how they would be able to release a Doom 4: they would be hard pushed to improve on the graphics, so making it better looking or scary, and the entire point of the game is minimal puzzle action, maximum shooting! However, I can see them changing location: perhaps moving it into a city: so perhaps bringing it off Mars, and onto Earth, since when computer power moves on, the size maps that will be playable will be 10 times the size of the current maps! This I think would be the best way to go: similar to half-life 2: a fully interactable world with real world items in a large map: perhaps with vehicles, etc.The enemies probably wouldn't need to change that much, and gameplay should always be prefered over the graphics: if they can make it just as scary over a large open space (similar to 28 days later ) then this would be amazing, being scared in a claustiphobic area is not hard, and perhaps gamers are getting used to this....The question is, is anyone willing to try?
  19. I have quite a few favourite cars: Lamborgini's, Ferrari's, Aston Martin DB9....but it has got to be the Maclaren Mercedes SLRI'm sorry, but it is a sports car with an air-brake yet it still has high enough ground clearance to get over speed bumps!
  20. I just can't see how it would be worth it...you can get your own domain name and use Xisto webmail for cheaper :)Yahoo's search engine is pretty goodSomehow I can't believe it would ever happen; it is not exactly like google is poor or anything!
  21. I would agree with much of that: linux is not going to overtake windows for a standard desktop operating system, because the ease of expanding and compatibility can never compare: It's main advantage would be in the business sector with a group of experienced staff who would be able to preside over it: with several thousand computers, with no game playing: but rather all office applications like word processing or databases or spreadsheets! The cost is far less and easier to maintain, whilst the security is far improved: however the lack of teaching about linux as people grow up has always being the thing that held this back. Since your standard network administrator only has qualifications in Windows and other microsoft products, whilst the user has probably never seen linux in their life: even for just simple things like word processing, where open office can be an adequate replacement whic works identicallt to Word, it is the problem of using something different from "the Norm" which causes the large companies which hold the sway over Microsoft to turn away from using the alternativesLinux needs to have more compatibility "out of the box" as it is called for the home user: the "click and install" attitude would be so much better and easier to use: I believe Suse tried to implement it. If you need for example a graphics program, you just put in the dvd, type in your search term: so graphics, and click INSTALL next to the Gimp. Easy to use and no seperate installing. This combined with the interbet downloading of programs clearly works better then compiling out of source code: the easy to use setup.exe of windows is perhaps its strongest point, hence why people will still use windows 98 over linux: not because of the GUI. To have a chance getting into the home user market, a linux brand like Suse needs to come forward and convince computer manufacturers that ordinary, non-geeky users will be able to turn on the computer and understand what to do: otherwise people will get windows installed as standard and never consider anything else.Alongside all of this, nobody would consider using linux if their old printer doesn't work with it, or even their new printer: linux is very far behind on offering support to extra hardware: part of the tight and vicious circle: if they can convince people that linux is the way to go, it would also force companies to offer support and drivers for their products straight off the cd, as opposed to finding some hacked together driver off the internet which only provides limited support: if linux can get itself established in this market, then it stands a much better chance of being widely accepted and perhaps as a result, find its way into the world of standard destktop operating systems
  22. A pigeons sense of direction is apparently very good due to their inbuilt "compass"...not sure how it works, but they can tell which way is north with their eyes closed, hence their ability to find their way home: however all bird's navigational skills must be pretty good if they all migrate between continents each year
  23. Did you know, that because of this problem, on Palm OS, in the calender on OS5.4 you can't get it to go past a date past 31 Dec 2037....try it :)Not that I'm planning ahead or anything....I get the feeling that if manufacturers only give you a three year warranty they aren't expecting the product to last 35 years, and also expect you to buy a new and improved version without this problem in 10 years time: though at that rate Palm OS might be replaced by Windows Pocket Vista or similar :-((Also it isn't 2048 because the calenders on software doesn't start on the year 0: it's soemthing like 1910 instead...very weird)
  24. Just remember, it's not the hair, it's the way you use it :)Around where I live, long hair is not what makes you gay, rather the style you put it in: the slicked back shoulder length hair with a hair band is pushing it, but a mullet is regarded as funny!
  25. I'd agree, Company of Heroes is an amazing game! You actually have to have more tactics then just: get lots of money, make loads of the most powerful unit: go beat up everyone else. The fairly low unit limit (especially at the start of skirmishes) gives a real challenge about having to decide what units to use: as the tank which takes up 1/4 of your unit limit is worthless if it can be defeated by a 3 unit anti-tank gun!Plus it is realistic: air drops as opposed to units just "appearing" and the physics engine is one of the best I've seen: it is actually possible for units to miss! When was the last time that ever happened in a game! The buildings sometimes collapse of theire own accord if damaged badly enough.I'll admit, there are some interesting points, like when tanks drive through each other, but this is more a bug than a game feature, but the ability to actually use tactics to gain an advantage is amazing!Inferior units can take out superior units if you are careful: so 1 infantry man can still take out a tank if you move quickly and use cover!Great game, need anything else be said?
