I'd recommend DamnSmallLinux (damnsmalllinux.org) and get either the original DSL distro or DSL-N (the newer, slightly larger distro) liveCDs. You can pop them in and boot with them in the drive, and if you like them, install from the cd.DSL was my first linux distro, and you can get packages for OpenOffice and Gimp and everything for it.

Xbox 360 Vs. Playstation 3 The good and bad about each
lacking_imagination replied to SoCalAztec's topic in Computer Gaming
I'm a former sony fanboy, but $599, Giant enemy crabs with weak points for massive damage and RIIIIDGGEEE RRAAACCEERRRR kinda killed E3 for me, and I bought an x360. So far I'm really digging Dead Rising (as are ~450,000 other americans ) and Ninety Nine Nights is great too. Defintly worth $400 -

lacking_imagination replied to lacking_imagination's topic in Web Hosting Support
Is there any credits/refunds due to us on this server, since its been down over 2 hours now? That's a good bit of time to be down for monitoring (especially for paid sites) -
My site is down, and the http is on the delta server, just letting y'all know.

Psp Vs Video Ipod what to buy....
lacking_imagination replied to Scrounger's topic in Computer Gaming
Actually someone ported a linux distro to the iPod and remapped the keys for doom and installed it that way. Last I checked, Video iPod cannot support iPod linux. I have an iPod nano and a PSP. Personally, I use the nano daily. 4gigs is more than enough for music (I have 3 gigs and use 1 gig for a portable HD). The psp, I use maybe 3 days a week. I have a 256mb mem stick for movies (and some homebrew, but we won't discuss that here), 6 games or so and family guy volume 1. The battery life isn't *that* bad. I turned brightness down to the lowest setting and used headphones and watched the entire first volume of family guy in 2 charges. Currently, to get the same storage, you'd need between 10 and 30 2gb Memory sticks, depending on your flavor of iPod. Now, with the compression rates for the psp videos, you can cram hours onto a mem stick. With my 256mb memstick, I have all my save games, 10 songs or so and a full 2 hour movie. One thing with the PSP, if you're into open source/homebrew development, Sony is constantly trying to kill it. Also, iPods HD do wear out. And the battery costs $65 to replace. All in all, if you want games, get a psp. If you want video with (tiny) built in speakers, get a psp or a DS. If you want massive amounts of music and movies on a tiny screen, get the video ipod. (Yes, I do know the increased size there.) ...there's also a 1gb ipod nano for $150 I saw in a microcenter ad. I dunno how reliable it is though -
How Do I Encode A Video File Into Divx?
lacking_imagination replied to CroSpartacus's topic in Software
Well, you can use AutoGK (autogk.net)Personally, I prefer to use XviD encoding. I'm more an open source person, but I think its much better.Windows media=meh if you're going for cross platform compatability (mac/*nix)That's the main reason I use XviD encoded AVI's for the site I run.It may be worth looking in to...Xvid.org -
Is Invision Power Board 1.3.1 Free ?
lacking_imagination replied to itssami's topic in Web Hosting Support
Hey, if you find out a free legal version could you post about it here? I'd REALLY love to have IPB, but I'm cheap (my new hosting is expensive enough) -
Alright...I'm not one to complain about things, but on the delta server, the MySQL has been down multiple times a week.I'm getting hosting with a different company soon, on completely unrelated issues that I knew about before coming here and didn't expect to run into quite so fast, but...I just want to know if the version of MySQL is a stable version. Or is it being over used? Honestly, there have been hours straight when I've been without a forum. Like now for instance. My forums have been down for 2 hours straight on my paid site. My Xisto site is still up.I'm sorry, but I know I don't rely 100% on the forums, but they are a major part of my site. And others use the mysql for their main page.It may only be $3.33 a month, but its almost not worth the hassle. Your free sites are higher quality than the paid ones. I won't miss the hosting here once I purchase my hosting at the new company.I don't hate this network, in fact, it's my first paid host. But 2 hour+ straight outages multiple times a week? Tuesday mySQL and cpanel crashed.C'mon guys, we're paying here, please take care of us.

My blog is also down, but the HTML pages work like normal... any help? My site was vgmr.uscpanel came back up, but the sql databases are down... is this due to the other topic from earlier?
-
My forums have been down since ~ 7:45 am est... I logged in to my cpanel, and this is what it said: Is there an issue with the mySQL databases right now? My forums are kinda vital to my site starting up :\ *edit* Fantastico is also down. It says this when I go to load a page:

Would Wanna Register Domain gave me some advice
lacking_imagination replied to guangdian's topic in Web Hosting Support
I recently registered through yahoo small business. It took about 3 hours to register so I could change the nameservers, and then I had to wait for the name to register on Xisto - Web Hosting's servers. All in all, it was maybe a 18 hour process. Not too bad (and it wasn't too expensive)Xisto - Web Hosting is really great (all the features, but more bandwidth and space and you don't _have_ to post here) and pretty cheap for hosting -
Fantastico On Paid Accounts? Where is it?
lacking_imagination replied to lacking_imagination's topic in Web Hosting Support
Not trying to nitpick, because I'm glad you guys were able to get it installed, but was there issues with getting invision boards for it? I saw it on the features page being advertised and was just curious (I prefer invision to phpBB)Thanks for your time again,Aaron -
If you would have read Opaque's post on the other thread, they just got the license to install it on the delta server (which your site may be on). Check the server name in your cpanel, and just be patient. That's all we can do.

Saint-michael Says Goodbye
lacking_imagination replied to Saint_Michael's topic in General Discussion
Again, who needs a post count... I'm leaving Xisto's hosting soon as well.I just want to say, you're not alone. Others have been there. There was a time in my life that I was alone... I was suicidal. And I took a while but I had to find that there was someone there for me that loved me... Someone that cared. You have been a great help in this forum, and your designing skills are amazing. You will be missed, even though I won't be as active due to running my site...I'll be praying for you.Peace, and God bless,~Aaron -
I just purchased hosting today and was wondering if there was a way to transfer the files from my blog and forums over to Xisto - Web Hosting (like a transloader). Since I don't even see fantastico on Xisto - Web Hosting, and I don't have the time to upload all the files for phpbb and wordpress again, it would be really handy :\Any help is appriceated
-
i was just curious where fantastico was on the paid accounts... i went to install wordpress and phpbb (moving from Xisto) and it wasnt there O_ois it down for now?

Honestly, you'll miss it.I was in school from 7:15 am to 2:36pm, and then on mondays until 5pm for jazz, tuesdays until 6 (marching band), I went back from 6-8ish on thursdays (marching again), and then football games (if they had one) on fridays, and about every other saturday we had competetions. On top of that, I worked 10-20 hours a week, had church wednesday nights and sundays, ran a website and a forum and still had time left over. Its all about managing your time.and then once you get in work v_vIt gets worse, and you have to take care of yourself. Enjoy school while you can.

Rhythm-action/music Games
lacking_imagination replied to lacking_imagination's topic in Computer Gaming
Did Vib Ribbon ever come out in america? I don't want to import a ps1 (or ps2) for just a few games (vib ribbon, mojib ribbon, for teh most part)... I'm also looking for Rez for ps2, but its pretty rare too -
Xbox 360 Vs. Playstation 3 The good and bad about each
lacking_imagination replied to SoCalAztec's topic in Computer Gaming
A question like this will only lead to fanboy wars at the moment... Wait for the ps3 to come out and then wait to see how the games look there (the demos at E3 were done on PCs and not actual ps3s)Personally, the ps3 will see more japanese made games than the 360. If you like sports games, your best bet will be the 360, but still wait it out to see. -
I just noticed there's no subforum for this.. Anyways, anyone play rhythm action games?I love DDR and In The Groove, and lately I've been playing Guitar Hero on ps2. Another recent favorite for me was Gitaroo Man for PS2. It was really different from a lot of rhythm action games and it was freaking hard... Its really rare though, so good luck finding it :rolleyes:Anyone else love music games?

The Best Games Ever Created And Played top 10
lacking_imagination replied to Tonny's topic in Computer Gaming
After getting a few new games, I'm gonna rebuild my list... (Mostly ps2)1. We Love Katamari2. Shadow of the Colossus3. Gitaroo Man4. Katamari Damacy5 Resident Evil 46. Ico7. Bokuno Watashino Katamari Damashii (psp import)8. DDRMax 29. Guitar Hero10. Final Fantasy IXI recently ran into a few old/rare games (Ico and Gitaroo Man) so they had to work their way into the list. And Shadow of the Colossus is just by far the most beautiful game I've ever seen so far. If that's the future of gaming... O_o wow.And sorry MGS and GTA, but you're just not worthy to be on the same list as Ico and SotC -
Playstation 3 general reviews and views
lacking_imagination replied to semeticsister's topic in Computer Gaming
Actually, the PS3 is supposedly slated for a fall release according to some magazine. Not sure exactly how reliable that is. Check the link from my blog to see... http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ It'll be the link to pspupdates.com A fall release would surprise me, unless by fall they're meaning the week before thanksgiving or so, which is also around the time the nintendo revolution is due out, according to their president. To anyone saying "product XXXXXX is better than product YYYYY", "better" is a matter of opinion. Personally, all system specs aside, I'll prefer the ps3 to the x-box 360, as I like the games on playstation better than the games on xbox. I'm not a halo person, and sony is planning an online system like xbox live, so I think I'll just be sticking with sony and nintendo's revolution. Honestly, though, if you like both sony and microsoft, its too early to decide anything because 1. There isn't even a working ps3 known to the public and 2. There aren't any extremely good xbox 360 games yet (nothing that a decent pc couldn't already do, at least). Give it time, people, before the fanboy wars start up. -
Playstation 3 general reviews and views
lacking_imagination replied to semeticsister's topic in Computer Gaming
@ .Hack//G.U.- You have to remember that they will support it until 2007, but that's only a year away. The Xbox is still getting new games now, but give it until around march. When the X-box 360 is widely available, all the developers will "jump ship", so to speak, and abandon the original. The same thing will happen after the PS3 is widely available. So don't expect anything after march 2k7 for PS2. @ GB Lolz- The PS3 is not available anywhere. They haven't even shown a working model at any conventions (all the ones you saw were conceptual cases, and may be changed). Anyways, I found some info, but I'm not gonna spam it on here.... I posted it on my blog if anyone's interested: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ -
Honestly, I really disliked the original splinter cell... There were too many times that required absolute precision and half the time if you shot one person or if one person found someone knocked out... *mission failed* I skipped pandora tomorrow because I heard it wasn't much better... But chaos theory is another story. I actually like chaos theory in small quantities. I prefore more straight out killing (which is why MGS appeals to me, you can play either way). But I do have to say, sam's move list is very impressive in chaos theory. The graphics were great and all the lighting effects were really good... The only thing was on the ps2 there was way too much loading. All in all, I liked CT but didn't like the first one at all

Personally, I use photoshop 7 (too cheap and no internet on my main pc to upgrade to CS2). When I'm working in linux though, my weapon of choice is the Gimp. Its free and basically does everything Photoshop does, and it can open .psd photoshop format. I really like it...Also, I use Macromedia Fireworks and Corel Painter some, but not as much as ps or teh gimp.If you're interested in gimp, check out gimp.org
