Leaving Your Computer On? - is this good for it?
fsastraps replied to nickmealey's topic in Software
As far as i know, computers are made with the idea that they could possibly be on for very long periods of time. Now the only way that it would be really bad for the computer, is ifyou are overclocking any part of it. But other than that you are in good shape! -
**NOTE: before anybody does this teak to the Registry, you really have to be carefull on what you do, and anybody that changes it, should make a backup copy of the registry, just incase something goes wrong.

Definately dont use windows firewall, i dont trust them that much. Although i do use a firewall, i use Nortons FireWall, but i also recomend ZoneAlarm, which is freeware, well you can also get pro tho but that cost some $$$.

Windows Update And Pop-ups? I installed SP, but still...
fsastraps replied to nickmealey's topic in Software
I dont thik you should expect a lot from MS, you might want to get ad-ware, to go the cheap way and get most of the pop up out of your pc, and you should get firefox, to get some of the popups out of the way to. Or you can just get Norton System works, which will help you out too, but still download firefox if you dont have it yet. -

Internet Explorer 7 reviews of IE 7 and its Betas
fsastraps replied to haron's topic in The Internet
Just like the post above i will only get it if it is going to protect me, which i doubt, i only think they are doing it to get people from firefox, i probably wont get it because i am happy with firefox for now, so i wont change to IE anytime soon. I dont know about you guys but i hate spyware. -

I think Ad-ware is the best, but i currently use the one that Norton System Works has for the Intivirus that searches for the spyware, and i havent changed it because it has worked fine so far.

Mozilla Firefox is what is use, it is the best i have used so far, it doest take all those popup in that attach to IE when it goes to different websites.

You guys just wait till PS3 comes out, PS has the best games, all i hear in the Post is Halo2, there is no other game mentioned, for example in PS there is GTA, Final Fantasy, Driver 3, Grand Turismo 4, and there are many other Greatest Hits, so i definately think playstation is better. If you ahve ever played Final Fantasy x or x-2 you know the capibilities in graphics ofthe PS2.And now with the PSP, its just very cool game console.**A comment for Spazz, you might want to put your next game topics under the games section. Although i understand that it could've been a mistake.

I have honestly never liked Dell too much, not for any particular reason but i just dont like it, but i have to say that that PDA does look pretty cool, you also have to look at the ones made by HP, because they have pretty good one too.
-
Its also got memory card, which is upgradable, and they are not very expensive as you may think, they will also come out with writable mini discs in which the user will be able to write music, vedio or picture files to them, its got a left analog stick.*although i hope you can connect to another PSP to be able to play in 2 player mode for that games for which you can.
-
Definately the PSP way much more things than DS plus the games are way better, yeah the touch scree, but i mean playstation games are way better for me. I cannot wait till it gets out, i mean just knowing taht you can put pictures, video and music in it, plus you can play games, its amazing!

I use windows, i really want to start using linux, but i think im waiting till windows longhorn comes out, and then buy new hardware for that OS b/c its supposed to be momory and speed hungry, and then ill build a new computer for that and ill install linux in the one i am currently using.
-
well, i think what you can try and that i know that will work, is if you have Norton System Works, then run the defragmenter that it has, it will make your computer run faster, you can usually get it for free, the ones of previous years, like in mail in rebates. Well but if you are concerened about the speed of your computer, your HDD does not have to d much with that, try getting some new memory that will definately help, or do some teaking to the OS, so it doesnt appear so fancy, it might help.

Compiler The compiler is a program that "translates" the entire program in to assembly object code that then goes through a linking process to create one large binary executable file. Advantage of the compiler is that it can see the "big" picture and may go through more than one pass to make sure the translation is correct. A disadvantage of compiling is that any changes or modifications to the code require a complete rebuild/ compile-link process. Interpreter This is a program that interprets each line of code one at a time and then executes them one by one. The advantage of this is that the code itself can modify itself as needed while it is executing. The disadvantage of this is that the interpreter only sees the little picture and may execute instructions out of context and there is no way of "speeding up" the code by optimizing the way the code is sent to the processor. Language - Level - Compiled or Interpreted Assembly - Low - Compiled/Assembled C(++) - Medium - Compiled Java - High - Interpreted Fortran - High - Compiled Perl - High - Interpreted Basic - High - May be compiled Most often Interpreted We see from the above table that Java is interpreted and that C(++) is compiled. Which is better? To be quite honest each is the best for each use. C(++) is the languaget to write most application programs such as Netscape, Word, etc. It is the preferred language to write these becuase these are compiled few times in comparison to the number of times it is executed. Much work has gone in to the improvement of the compilers to provide optimized efficient executing files. C(++) allows direct interaction with the hardware of the system. Java on the other hand runs on top of a software emulated Java virtual machine (JVM). Becuase the hardware is "emulated" using software there is no actual access to hardware by Java. So the Java byte code is executed one line at a time or interpreted. To take advantage off this Java programs can actually be modified while they are actually running. Since these are often used as programs over the networklk you can update them even while they are in use without requiring the system or program itself to be shutdown or restarted. This is basically the long way of saying that each magnifies it's strengths by understanding their weaknesses. I hope all this helps a little.

Hey, you might wanna do what everybody has told you before about the spyware thing, b/c that could be a problem, but it would also be helpsull if you told us, if your computer was running at 80% as soon as it started, or if its after you use the computer after sometime, but you closed all the non-windows applications.Well, it can also be a windows update that made your pc slower, or a program that is not loding right. If you cant fix your pc then you might asswelljust intall your OS again.
