ICS Question About DSL Sharing
miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG replied to minnieadkins's topic in Computer Networks
5 or 4 whichever hub you have will do - although I've never heard of a 5port hub. Hubs usually come in multiples of 4. And if I'm not mistaken you've a slight error in the layout. It should be, DSL -> Router (with DHCP) -> HUB -> PC1, PC2...PCx The router is the one who allots every system on the network their IP addresses. So it has to have DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) working. If your PC1...PCx are set to Obtain IP Address Automatically in the Network Options, they'll poll the router and get their respective IP addresses. However, you need to set a FIXED IP for the ROUTER itself, as it will act as the Default Gateway in this case. A gateway, as the name suggests, is an open path to the outer world. Since your modem dials the internet and then passes on the connection to the Router, the router acts as the Gateway to the internet. So it HAS TO HAVE a fixed IP. Check you manual on how to configure your router with a fixed IP. THis is the one which should appear in the Default Gateway field of all your PCs. ... and all should work fine -

I Hate Cell Phones Being unavailable rules
miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG replied to Sarah81's topic in Science and Technology
Aaah finally someone after my own heart. Even I do like to go totally incommunicado at times. I even let my cell phone lie around at times allowing the battery to run dry. Sometimes I chuck it below the bed and forget all about it... More often that not I leave it at odd places inside the house..Believe me or not - once I even found it inside the FREEZER (after two days of hunting) -

ICS Question About DSL Sharing
miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG replied to minnieadkins's topic in Computer Networks
A quick suggestion - DO AWAY with ICS.If your connection medium is a DSL Modem-Router, then it should be able to dial on it's own. Simply spend another $50/60 and get yourself a small 8port unmanaged switch or a similar hub. Connect the swtich the DSL router directly to the switch and let it dial out, and connect both your PC's to the switch too. That way you can totally do away with all these hassles. I've got the exact same configuration here - except that 7 computers (including a server) are connected to the switch and the switch I have is one expensive piece of hardware well over $1000 - a 3COM Managed 28 port FDDI Switch. The DSL Modem-Router is an external one with both Ethernet and USB support. It's plugged into the switch through ethernet. Only first time after installing the network, I'd to login to the modem-router and set the dialling login/pass into it - and alot it a unique IP - which serves as my gateway address. Then on it just dials out. All computers on my network use this modem-router's IP as the default gateway address and all of them can access the net. Works like a CHARM -

miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG replied to kvarnerexpress's topic in Programming
Do you HAVE to stick to old VB ? Why don't you switch to VB.NET. If you're interested in that, I can provide you with a far simpler and much more flexible solution. VB was never up to my liking - but with the advent of .NET - HELL YEAH -

Man admit it - your Monitor's breathing it's last Chuck it out of your 10th floor balcony - if you want to see a glorious end accompanied by fireworks -
Horizontal scroll bar, eh ? You should use these two properties together for that div: overflow: auto;word-wrap: break-word; That should see you through.

Sorry - this can be answered only by OpaQue. I don't have direct access to the servers. Unfortunately, I'd been away whole day - so I never encountered the problem myself - else, I'd have given him a ring and let him know. I believe you'd agree with me that this is a rare occurence, but yeah sometimes there's just too much load on our servers as it's running so many free hosted accounts with varying contents like huge photo/video galleries, mp3's etc. I think these downtimes (not really downtimes - but service request failures) happen because of sudden overloading at any point of the day. Also it could be the result of some router failure from your end to Gamma. This is more often than not - the true culprit. There's been so many times, I've whined and complained about Asta being slow and my site not loading - where others have looked upon me with astonishment, as their accounts were working like a charm. What can I say, $hit happens.Anyway, all seems fine for now - lets wait up and see.

Yup - mod_rewrite is pretty much at work. Our board gives you a live demo of it and in case you're using IPB or any other forum software that supports the SEF URLs, then you can generate them from your own hosting account to with the help of mod_rewrite. My advise would be for you to get your CMS up and working with dynamic pages first. Get all your units to work in harmonious conjunction - only then start delving into the mod_rewrite issue - coz I can assure you it's gonna take you just a day or two to get the static url generation working. It's the CMS part that's going to take you for the real ride

For one thing - usually, dynamically generated pages contain a lot of variables in the URL, something like: http://www.somedomain.com/somepage.php?id=x&page=y§ion=abcd That's what both Ad engines and Search engines hate like anything causing them to avoid such pages like plague. One easy alternative would be to take advantage of Apache's MOD_REWRITE module, to serve the web-pages in such a manner that they appear as static content to the Search & Ad Spiders alike. Take for example this forum itself - it uses mod_rewrite to it's fullest to generate what is known as SEF or Search Engine Friendly URLs. While in reality the pages are still dynamically generated by the forum software, when you view them in your browser, the URL appears to be that of a static page as shown in your address bar. This is the doing of mod_rewrite. About the exact process you'll find plenty of articles on the net - just google for mod_rewrite and search engine freindly url. Invision Power Board has a module called FURL or Friendly URL, which can be downloaded from invisionize.com. You can study the php code and get an idea how this is done. It's not a very complicated process actually - although my limited knowhow doesn't permit me to get into an indepth discussion. That would be OpaQue's speciality.

ADODB Class - Database Wrapper Class
miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG replied to developer.cool's topic in Programming
Frankly this post is quite useless. You haven't provided any reference material and links to such sites where members can read further on this topic. For those who have no inkling about ADO, wouldn't know that its a DB Wrapper class by MS used extensively in MS Developer Studio to connect to different breeds of RDBMS and lets you manipulate these DBs without any knowledge of SQL whatsoever. When you make such a post, make sure you include links for further reference and also put in more material that helps members understand the topic better - to start with. BTW, ADO stands for ActiveX Data Objects - but recently this abstraction layer aka wrapper has been adapted to other mainstream and scripting languages too (e.g. PHP, Python) - and this new adapted class has been named ADODB. As of now, ADODB supports these databases (list might be incomplete): Access DB2 Firebird Foxpro FrontBase Informix Interbase MS SQL MySQL Netezza Oracle PostgreSQL SAP DB SQLite Sybase Teradata -

My question is why couldn't you get AJAX to work ? It's so darned simple. Need any help on that, check out the Shoutbox files - or the content of the Credits Reporter extension I was designing. Nothing better than AJAX to go with FF Extensions. -
