  1. Personally, I still use GoLive 6. I haven't updated the full suite since the only two applications I use are GoLive and Photoshop (which I did upgrade to CS1). I have hated DW since version 2. It never seemed to do what I wanted it too and did things like save absolute paths instead of relative paths, etc. This day in age, everything I do almost is CMS based. So I actually do very lttle design work and use BBedit to make changes to templates for Xoops. Granted BBedit is a Mac application, but a damned good text editor.
  2. I found it takes a couple days for the approiate ads to resolve themselves. I have a couple sites about Blender 3D, the OSS rendering and 3d Animation package) and I get ads all the time for kitchen-aid blenders. But then most of the time, it's ads for Respower, rendering engines, and other 3D technologies, which are all relevant. Also since my site has to do with Xgrid, I get a lot of apple ads, which actuall pay the most dividens it seams as nearly 80% of the folks to my site are Mac users.
  3. I took that as the space sim market. I remember when Doom 3 game out, we played it at one of my friend's house one night on his xbox. After 6 hours of going, "wow, these are cool graphics: nowhere is some ducttape so I can attach the flash light to my gun" we got extremely board beginning to realize "Wait a minute...this is Doom 1 with better graphics." I don't think any of us even finished the game. We got board. Just like 50 other FPS games out there on the market all trying to sell eye candy instead of the game. KOTOR I for the Xbox was one of the best games I had played in years. Graphics were good, but the story line and characters were fantastic. That game was fun because of the characters mixed with a decent story line that made you want to play. I remember spending about a week at a friend's house as we took turns playing the game trying to beat it in 40 hours. It was fun not only to play, but just to sit there and watch...while drinking lots of vodka. Same friend rented Halo 2 when it came out and we beat it on medium in coop in a single weekend and thought: Well that sucked...it's over all ready. I'm getting harder to please in my old age I guess...
  4. What got me was how well Hezbaullah used the media in the last war. Iran got the heat taken off their enrichment program, got Hezbuallah to START a proxy war with Isreal and then got the world press to turn against Isreal making them look like the bad guys. There needs to be some kind of new round of meetings to write a new Geneva Convention. I haven't seen a war yet that has adhered to the rules set forth in the agreement and I've never seen a war outside of western europe where people actually made an attempt to adhere to the so-called rules of war.
  5. Simple answer: no.Why? I guess I', just getting old now as I find spending that much money on a game system, not to mention the games, doesn't interest me anymore. Now with the Mactels out, I just bought a Mac Pro and dual loaded XP Pro on it so I could play a couple games and then use the Mac side of the house for work (Final Cut Pro, Lightwave 3D). The only game I'm playing these days is Falcon 4.0 Allied Assault or whatever it's called. Basically Falcon 4.0 (released in 1998) updated with all the bugs taken out and improved graphics. Now that the dyanmic campaign simulator works in really simulating a war where your actions have an impact, it's a fun game. Takes hours and hours and hours to master as it's a Flight SIMULATOR (one that meets all the USAF training requirements) not a flight GAME. But it's a blast to play since I'll never spend one minute inside the cockpit of a real F-16. Frankly, no body is producing games that keep my interest. After Ubi Soft screwed up the Ghost Recon series from a tactical sim to an shoot-em-up (especially on the consoles) I'm stuck with the classic Rainbow 6 series of games.Even with my PS2 I started to wait for games to hit the $20 bargin bin before buying them. The last 2 games I've bought have been Lego Star wars I and Starwars Battlefront II. Interesting and fun games to play, especially with friends, and I might shove out the money for a new hockey game this year (my last one is 2003 so a little dated). I guess as someone in their later 20's, I'm finding other cool things to spend $600 on other than video games.
  6. Legal action can be dicey. For starters, even though they had a US registered domain. If the site is hosted outside of the United States or the EU, good luck on enforcement. Although most of these people are really idiots, like most criminals, the smart ones will have an array of shell and dummy corps to protect themselves. That being said, if you can get at the legally, it is the best way to do it because you can go after their money supply. Of course this also comes from someone in Law School who's area of interest is internet and international law..l.
  7. To me, no. I play my PS2 about 3 hours a week and there are many other things I can spend $400 on. That's halfway to a new iMac that I can use for work and play. Guess I'm just getting old.
  8. This being a tech site, I read PDA = Palm Pilot. Then I was going to go onto this be speil about in locus prentes and the case in Mass. where school officals wanted to take student cell phones and see who they've been calling and texting under the context of drug enforcement....
  9. The niche has disappeared. I grew up on the Wing Commander games, Privateer being one of my all time favorites, and the Xwing Series, and Freespace. I never played free lancer.Check out Vegastrike.sourceforge.net Vegastrike is an opensource game and there is a remake version of WC privateer all freely available. Another game to check out is Battlestar Galactica: Beyond the Red Line. BSG:BRL is based on the Freespace 2 code (now opensource) and when it is released will be a totally awsome game I might have to get a new PC game for. (this is a fan made project)I still have my PS2 from my college days and often play Battlefront I & II with friends, along with the lego starwars games, but given what they want for a 360 or PS3...I'm thinking I'm getting out of gaming as I play a couple hours a week now.
  10. Windows Movie Maker (which should be included with Windows XP). If that's not enough, Download Apple Quicktime and then buy the Pro key ($30). The combination of Quicktime Pro and Movie Maker should be able to handle most of your tasks.Quicktime Pro has some limited editing ablities, but it's main feature is that it can read and write most formats with the execption of Real formats. So then you can convert the MPEG into AVI and then import into movie maker to do some edits/add sound/etc.
  11. I haven't switched to the intel based system (I'm still using my trusty old Titanium Powerbook [1ghz G4, 1GB ram])Still, at work we have a few of the new intel iMacs and they work extremely well. Personally, the one thing I don't like about the new Macbooks is their size, 13" screens. It's a compromise between the 12.1 and 14.1 inch iBooks. I did own a 14.1" iBook before this powerbook and I do have to say, if your planning to do any traveling, the smaller size is nice. Lugging around a 6lb Laptop around Europe wasn't fun. I would have liked the 4lb smaller iBook. That's why my work bought a couple 12.1 inch Powerbooks when they came out. We use those for traveling because they fit nicely onto airplane tray tables. If you do get one, make sure you get the glossy screen. Those are nice from what I've seen. My next big purchase is going to be a new Macbook Pro in the next year or two. Basically I plan to switch from Final Cut Pro 4.5HD to 5 when the next version of Shake is released. That being said, iLife is the media applications, iWork is the office application and Keynote (like PowerPoint). iWork is a good little application if your not going to be needing a spread sheet. Personally I use MS Office 2004 for Mac and love it. Powerpoint works so much better on the Mac as does all the office applications. The big thing your missing is an easy to use database system like Access. That being said, if your familar with MySQL, no big deal, use a real database (same with PostgreSQL), but it doesn't sound like your be needing those. Still I'd wait until lepord (OS 10.5) is released. Then you'll have native 64-bit support and Apple's pretty bad about not letting you upgrade to the latest OS if you just purchased a product. (I bought my iBook in July with OS 10.1. IN Oct they released 10.2, but I had to buy the upgrade.)Also something else to note: iLife no longer comes with your computer. It's preinstalled, no media. So if you do wipe out your harddive, you'll have to go and BUY a copy of iLife. I found that out the hardway. I had the last free version of iLife and did a fresh install of OS 10.4 on my laptop the other day and had to go out and spend the USD 80 in iLife '06. I was not happy about that.
  12. Orginial tracks for use in the upcomming Battlestar Olympia video iPod series I'm working on.
  13. Nice work. verything was simple, easy to follow, easy to find, and you have a good domain for your subject matter. Now all you need is more members and if you keep the site up on a specific topic, that will come. Usually sites like your take a while to build a core audience, but in a couple years you'll get a lot of regulars. I know from my own websites that I have a lot more lurkers and visitors than members. Since it's related to a 3D animation program, I force people to register to download the models, and then offer ad free accounts for a USD 20 donation per year. Again it takes time your site has a good layout and specific ad content. If your looking for more revenue generation, try adding a classified ads section and charge a nominal fee (5 pounds) to list an ad until it sells. Maybe even offer it free of charge for the first year or free to premium members etc. Also look around to websites that sell rc car parts. See if you can become an afflicates and add a block or set up a mini-store on your site. maybe see if they'll sponsor the site in exchange for getting their ad banner plastered on every page in a neat way. I'm afraid if I give any more advice I'll have to charge you
  14. The most common method, and many well coded apps support this, is table prefixes. So let's say you have xoops. All the tables would be xoops_news, xoops_conent, xoops_banners, etc. Then let's say you want to have Promisance game engine. Then those tables could be prom1_game, prom1_news. Let's say you want a second Promisance game engine:Prom2_game, prom2_newslet's say you want to include phpbb...phpbb_news, phpbb_membersso on and so forth. I used to have to do this back in the day when you only got 1 MySQL database with your hosting accounts.
  15. You will need to have the physical media to install Windows. So even if you do download a copy (which other than legal issues you can run into problems with nasty programs waiting for you to install) you'd still need to burn it to a DVD to install onto your computer. I have installed XP on an intel iMac with book camp with no problems, but I had the physical disk and this was XP pro. (where I work decommissioned its last PC's when the second generation Mactels were released. Why keep the extra machines around when we could now duual boot if we needed a windows application.
  16. I'm in Law School, so I don't think you get any more corrupt than hanging around lawyers and politics.
  17. You have Gunship, the old Apache Helocopter simulation? I had the later version for IBM/DOS, but I still remember trying to play that game at a firend's house who had a C64.
  18. Kim Jung Il is unpredictable at best. While it's unclear whether he would use a nuclear weapon with a first strike against Japan or their southern neighbor just isn't known. The guy is nuts as in Hitler nuts and has the population basically brainwashed. I didn't believe it myself until I talked with some folks who were in N. Korea as part of an UN envoy. (the people were Germans, not Americans) At least during the Cold War, both the Soviet Union and United States were ran by mostly rashonal men who knew that there was no winners in a nuclear war. Both sides fostered backdoor channels to ensure there were lines of communication and while the two sides publically clashed, privately there was a notion that neither side wanted an exchange. I think Tom Clancy summed it up best in the sum of all fears when he wrote: "It's not the guy with 27,000 nukes I'm worried about; it's the guy with one."Most of the fear over a North Korean bomb is that of uncertanity. N. Korea has shown in the past the willingness to sell other weapons technology for hard cash. Would they do the same with nukes? Would Kim Jong Il actually use a nuke in a first strike? It's those questions that keep the intelligence analysts up at night because the truth is they don't know. So they assume worst case and that is Kim Jong Il is crazy enough to sell nukes or use them first.
  19. Guess what, I still have it in all it's 5.25" floppy (when disks were really floppy) glory! I also have it's sucessor, F-117A Stealth fighter developed after they really knew what it looked like. It was a shame to see the demise of Microprose and the end of PC military flight sims. I know the atari folks released Falcon 4.0 Allied something arouther last year, but this was Falcon 4 with the game engine fixed and graphics updated. Probably the last such true military flight sim that will be released unless the genre comes back in vogue.
