  1. From my experience with this app I have found it to be one of the best archive utilities out there (certainly better than WinRar) in that it is fully featured and can be used to archive/extract a wide range of filetypes using either a command line or the included file manager, as well as being free. I would recommend this, although WinRar is good too and can certainly fulfill all of the requirments of a good archiving program. although having said that for zip archives I tend to use the built in Windows XP archiver (simply due to the fact that it is slightly quicker). a problem I have with 7zip is that it does not open the extracted folder once extract has comppleted (unless I didn't see an option somewhere) but despite this the program still offers many features that make it good for the job.
  2. If you'd asked me to answer this question last week I would have voted for Opera 9.01, I would have cited these reasons: Speed (both render and general application, Low reasource usage and inbuilt email client) However recently I've been drifting back to Firefox (which I moved away from due to memory leaking), the first step in drifting back to firefox was to test Flock: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/, which got me used top the superior site compatibility that Gecko based browsers hold over Opera (spacifically with Google products) and it also got me accustomed to Firefox Extensions again (namely StumbleUpon), something which I believe Opera Widgets will never be able to mimic. Adding to this I was able to (after some quick Google-ing) find a solution to the Firefox memory troubles that had driven me away from it in the first place (whihc can be found here: Link). Oh yeah and I almost forgot my favourite feature of Firefox (that is possible in Opera, it's just not out of the box) losding urls from simply typing in a keyword or keywords that are loaded via an I'm feeling lucky Google search (opera simply appends www. & .com to the word to make a url). I have therefore voted for Firefox.
  3. For me it was kind of a combination between the MySQL databases and the email addresses that won me over, however after having been here for a while I have come to learn that by far the best feature of Xisto is the community (ok so the amout of hosting space doesn't hurt too). I have come to find that pretty much any problem you may have with the building of your site or anything else can pretty much always be sloved by someone here, theres a reason this is the only forum I visit regularly (ok so some of it's to maintain the credits obviously, but most of the reason is the people). Oh yeah and the uptime is great (compared to alot of the free hosts out there)
  4. Thanks for the heads up, but again, I'm not big on Yahoo Messeneger, although thats mainly because of all my friends using WLM, which is not a problem now so you never know I might give Yahoo another go. Actually to be honest I prefer Google Talk, but getting people to convert to that was to much of a problem so I (reluctantly) went back to WLM (which is still bloated imo, as is Yahoo).
  5. Runescapes about the least fun thing I could imagine, but having said that mmo's aren't really my thing anyway. From what I've seen of Runesape (I admit I haven't actually played it ) the most interesting thing was that you got to farm and shop (2 things I have no interest in) although I'm sure the quests do take the edge off, I would expect this game to get repetitive really quickly. To be honest though if I was going to get into mmo's I'd stump up the cash for something decent such as Dungeon Seige or WoW.
  6. I seem to remember my Physics teacher explaining this to me, I didn't really understand it then, maybe it was the fact that it was first thing on a Monday morning (which my don't sleep on Sunday/Monday plan didn't really cater for) but now you've explained it here it seems pretty simple, you don't find the square root of the nagative number you just imagine it to be a real number, this of course makes the answer imaginary (I think thats it anyway), well thanks for the help, have you ever considered teaching? or at least tutoring, you could make some money from stupid people like me.

    Noob Talk

I tend to find that the level of experience (ie noob or not) has very little emphasis on the way people type, sure there are a lot of people who do type like this that are new to the whole internet thing, or they found they could do it on some rubish fake MMORPG (read: Runescape) and get away with it. then they decide to branch out and try something else, they visit a forum and try it and thats when it happens instant flamings. These people tend to grow out of it pretty quickly, I find. Then there are the people who continually do it just to annoy everyone else, they tend to see a quick ban related disappearence. But the reasoning behind it isn't the annoying factor that makes people start posts like this, that is the fact that certain people feel the need to do this, and the more people getinto the habit of doing this, the harder it is to combat and the larger a battering the English language takes, Seriously people how much harder is it to type 2 extra letters, try it one day, you never know you might find people respect you a bit more and you last longer than a day on a forum. I know theres not really a name for it but I tend to find your labeling of Noob talk to be slightly off, I would prefer te naming of Text Speak (due to it's large use in Text Messaging), as this tends to be less offensive to the large numbers of new people who are indeed normal. Don't get me wrong I won't pull anyone up on a few spelling mistakes (you've probably noticed the ones that litter this very post), hell the occasionaly shortening of words is fine too, I use cause (insted of because) myself, but when you start going the route of cuz, plz, tnx all those then you really have to ask yourself one question (and no it's not do you feel lucky) do you want to look like a 5 year old, well do ya, Punk (sorry about that, it's late and I'm tired and I don't get out much)
  8. Theres a hugh flaw in this plan though, no one actually likes Real Player. Google and Mozilla gain nothing from this, as if poeple see that they will be bundeled with Real Player I can see a lot of people downloading a standalone version or an entirly different application, just to avoid having to download Real Player. Lets face it after it was selected as the 2nd Worst Tech Product Ever by PC World (to be honest it'd have to go some to beat AOL), why would any one want to: a) use the program or have any sort of association with the program. It surprises me that Real still try and sell it when there are a multitude of better media player out there. That and i don't see the need for software bundles anyway, if people want an application they just want that if they wanted the other ones too, they'd go and get them seperatly it's that simple.
  9. This definitely seems to one of those things that I'm sure is cool but doesn't have a large application, sure you could use it for tourism, but what's wrong with videos (sure they lack the interaction but to be honest if you're going to visit somewhere do you care if you do or do not have an interactive 3D walk trough before hand or not). I figure like almost everything it could have a military application, all you need is some photographs (and with modern photographic equipment you don't have to be anywhere close to the target) and you could reconstruct them into a 3 dimensional representation, could offer an improved reconnaissance application. Although I doubt this application is targeted at me, so that's probably why I don't understand the need for it.
  10. I would say about an hour and a half ago, I watched Tron, it was (still) good, but apart from that I don't really watch much TV, although there is always a TV on in the background (the rest of my family watch alot of TV), I however tend to spend most of my time either sat at my PC or playing on my PSP (while a TV is on in the background). I would also say that alot of the time I watch TV it is not actually a TV program it tends to be DVD's.
  11. Brown, that is the colour of my eyes and it is also my favourite eye colour (so I guess I got lucky), even if my eyes wern't brown I wouldn't want to change them, although if i was going to change them I'd go for something abit different, like white, no purple, Deep Purple.
  12. Currently no, the main things stopping me are (in order of importance) I don't really need to use a lot of Desktop applications of this nature i.e. Word/Writely, Excel/Google Spreadsheets, my current lack of broadband makes certain Google applications too slow (Maps mainly, again I have little need for that), I rarely need the collaboration aspects of said online office applications. The one glaring exception however has to be Gmail (imho the best Google application outside of its core search functionality) indeed if MS would let me forward my Windows Live Mail email to Gmail I would not use another applications for email (currently it's Gmail and Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta, occasionally Opera's built in mail client M2).However the cross platform and accessibility aspects (i.e. the files are accessible from anywhere) do appeal to me and if I did need to use these types of applications more often I would certainly look Google's way for a solution, plus given the way Google applications evolve what seem to be low powered applications today may one day grow into a full on Google Office that may rival Word. But currently if you are looking to dump Word the only alternative I can offer is Open Office.org 2.0 (well that and I'm still waiting on my Writely invitation)
  13. Seriously though as far as I could tell this guys a genius, especially the MySpace thing, I'm yet to see anything that is worthy of even existing on there (the content of the pages not the people I would never say anyone was not worthy of existence). For the large part MySpace profiles are badly coded and written even worse (I'm not against using short hand, I even dabble in the occasional bit of l337) but there's a point when the assault on the English language must stop. dude and don't even get me started on Runescape, jees is that ever boring, why not just stick hot pokers in your eyes and get it over with.On the other hand though I did notice a lot of hypocrisy, He stated that the mentioned sites were very low on intelligence and served no purpose at all, well that could be said of this guys site (and his poor handling of DreamWeaver). The contact page is a classic example, just read it and try and find one intelligible thing on the page you won't there aren't any it might as well be on MySpace for all the good it's doing.the inclusion of Google and WikiPedia stumped me a little too, i would guess that his problems are Google fanboy's i.e. those for whom Google can do no wrong, and with WikiPedia I suspect it could be related to the open nature and that sometimes articles are edited so as to be false.
  14. Well I'd buy one, actually no scratch that I just remembered theres very little worth watching on TV anymore. Anyway the ideas cool, just I personally wouldn't go the TV route, maybe if it could be attached to a computer somewho that would work but for TV I personally wouldn't go for it. If it was in glasses maybe but an implant is too risky, plus theres the cost of this technology, it isn't going to be cheap. Obvisously it's a far way off by now but currently while I can see the attraction for a lot of people I personally wouldn't go with a TV implant, an Implant that would allow me to stream videos from my PC / the Internet to my brain, now that I'd go for.
  15. Well, i wouldn't count on there being a massive shift away from Apple any time soon just because Microsoft step up for a fight. Granted MS do have the money and the skills to pull it off, and if they can get this thing tied in to Vista, and the 360 (Windows Live Anywhere?) than that will definitely be an angle Apple will have great difficulty in responding to, what with the massively smaller hardware support for Macs. However the simple truth is that Apple have too great a lead for a real challenge (even if the iPod isn't the best MP3 player around, IMHO Creative make far better players) and Apple have pretty much everyone cornered when it comes to content (again IMHO iTunes ain't great either). And due to Microsoft's classic failure to see an emerging market quickly and apply the classic MS stranglehold (see: OS, Browser, Office Suite) this thing has a way to go yet. PS what was wrong with the name Argo? why would anyone call anything Zune?
  16. Personally I'm with Tenshigami on this, it's all abit pointless to me and I know I got sick of it, any way it definately eases of once people grow up. It's just a sad fact that it will be there to start with and it will always be there, some will carry it on in later life (and may even take it to further extremes) but at the end of the day we are all essentially the same, and anyway it's the differences that make life interesting. If it bothers you that much just stay away from people who label you, but (and this goes for everyone, in a similar situation) just remember that it's their problem not yours.
  17. It's not really good but it would probably just confuse the other person so it might be fun. Me and my friends do this kind of thing for fun (it's more fun than it sounds ok) anyway the strangest comeback I ever heard was 'so's your face', which really doesn't make sense.
  18. Personally I don't go to many hot places, I really cannot deal with excessive heat currently where I live it's about 29 degrees Celsius (84 Fahrenheit) and thats hot enough for me.
  19. Well thats interesting, it definitely fills my 'you learn something new everyday' quota. Anyway I managed to get 2 programs to die due to this (Opera and Google Talk), although I was admittedly not very thorough in my testing. Anyway I'm sure most will fix this in the 22 years they have to do so. It's really weird how it makes affected machines display Friday 13th, get kind of cool. Anyway Y2K was seriously over hyped so I don't see this causing too much of a problem.
  20. The only new feature I found was that it was at least 5 times slower than version 1.5, I do however like the additions of some of the new features, even if the only one I can't get in Opera is inline spell checking (it has spell checking, its just not automatic) and extensions although I don't really care for those as all they do is add to the bloat. The fact that places was dropped is a good thing for me, having used places in Minefield (Firefox trunk build) I can say that it did nothing to increase the ease of use and still doesn't work properly. The re open closed tabs feature IMO is horribly implemented, They should be a toolbar button (as in Opera). I even noticed a few new render problems with the new version of Gecko (1.8 I think). Anyway it's still better than IE 7 b3 (only just mind) but for me Opera is still far and away the best browser currently available.
  21. Yep sorry but this is perhaps the worst movie I have ever seen (closely followed by Darkness Falls). This film contains only one (very short scene) that I actually liked, the bit where the mask dude bites the guys tongue out, thats the single good point in this film, which quite frankly made me wish I could un watch it. The songs sweet though.
  22. Personally I don't really like the design much, however the idea and the principles behind it I do like the whole wireless thing which could be a great asset to Microsoft. My thought about the interface would be that the device functioned as a normal MP3 player, but when viewing videos I guess that the device would be held sideways giving it a widescreen aspect ratio. I also suspect that there are either side buttons or touch sensitivity to manage navigation an seeking within media.I am also intrigued as to how MS can link this in with the Xbox as this design clearly doesn't play (conventional) games, it will obviously allow for streaming of media from Xbox's and from PC's (unless MS go crazy). anyway seeing as this is just one design in Project Argo I would expect there to be other (better) designs, ones that may include gaming and link in to Windows Live Anywhere (or is that Everywhere?).
  23. Its really too early to tell at this stage as Sony and Nintendo are far from release, however my best prediction is Sony (just), Nintendo then MS. When Sony and Nintendo release the PS3 and the Wii (When you yet used to that its actually a good name), that due to the price issue Nintendo will take the lead, but Sony will come good eventually and bring the price down and show us that they do still have a clue, but they have a tough job ahead of them and are by no means guaranteed the win this time around, but I'm sure Final Fantasy and MGS will be enough to sell the system when they come out. I know personally I am getting a Wii (for Red Steel and Metroid, possibly Wii Sports) and a PS3 (MGS, Killzone 2, and whatever else). overall however I see this being the closest race yet and it could go either way, however it is still Sony's to lose.
  24. I want to love Firefox I really do, but it is simply becoming unusable. Its far too slow in almost all respects, slow to open, hellishly slow at doing anything. I will however say that it it far excedes Internet Explorer (Although 7 beta 3 is promising, and almost usable). However I have recently moved away from Firefox (due to the memory leaking) and gone over to Opera, which I can highly recommend to anyone not wanting to use IE, but put off by firefox's speed (or rather lack of), true Firefox has some advantages (More widely supported, especially by the big 3 (Google, MS, and Yahoo) and the extensions (although most extensions simply mimic built in features of Opera) and Opera is usually fine if you mask the User agent as Mozilla, or IE). Opera is widely regarded as the fastest browser currently available and features pretty much every built in feature of Firefox (and some extension features) and more (Bittorrent, built in mail client, IRC, download resuming). Firefox is good (better than IE) just not as good as Opera, but the main point is you don't use IE. Notice from electriic ink: Removed the second part of the post, which is simply a duplicate of the first.
  25. I know this was a while ago, but I must say I have never experienced any of these problems (barring one , hardly noticable, dead pixel). That is however becuase my PSP is fairly new, so these problems have been sorted out. I will agree that Kutaragi was abit foolish (arrogant, too) to claim that it was a design choice.P.S. about the twisting thing, you know you really shouldn't be twisting your PSP, anyway (now maybe I need to work out more) I really cannot twist my PSP (not that I would) I'ts pretty rigid. and The new ones (the white ones especially) are supposed to be even better quality.
