First off to answer a previous post: Windows Live Mail is the service provided to you for you to use your mail. A mail client is just a software to use that service. Outlook Express amongst others like Thunderbird, Mail ... etc are clients to use mail services with. Like many others, I have been a long user of Hotmail (now Windows Live Mail) before moving to GMail. I spent a very brief time with WLM because it was loading very slow even on a cable connection, I just did not like the waiting time. Configuring WLM with my default mail client was extremely difficult, not sure if it has been changed in any way now. GMail on the other hand was simple and easy to get it to work on Mail. Huge storage space, easy to configure steps and not forgetting quick loading speed on their web mail (not that I use it alot). Most if not all of my Emails come to my Mail application, and I store a copy of them in the server, just in case I accidentally delete it via my client. GMail is definitely the way to go for me. And since it is so easy to configure and it offers way much more storage space than WLM, why not consider it?

Welcome to Xisto. I trust you will enjoy posting here. Once you have enough credits, why not apply for hosting here at Xisto, it is free. All you need to do is to maintain positive credits and the only way to do that is to be active on this forum. Not too much to ask for a host with no restrictions, now is it? Though I am no longer hosted with Xisto but rather with Xisto - Web Hosting which requires me to pay some money for it, I do take the time to come on this forum to post from time to time because that's how good this community is that it gets us non-hosted members to keep coming back to participate in the dicussions going on here. Probably this will kickstart your Xisto experience. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

I have been using my iMac for slightly over 2 months now and just like you, I am loving every moment of it. I was previously a Windows user for almost a decade, starting all the way from Windows 95 to 98 and eventually to XP (Skipped 2000). I don't recall even having to scan my Mac for any virus whatsoever or spyware. The most I do is to simply clean up my HDD from time to time to ensure that space are not hopelessly used up by configuration files from uninstalled applications. A computer with higher specs running Vista turns out to be even slower than a lower spec computer running OSX Leopard. I am running Windows XP on boot camp, don't be surprised it is not Vista. And the only reason I log on to Boot Camp is when I need to play some games or watch some webcast which is not supported on a Mac for some reason, issues with using the Windows Media DRM. Otherwise, the Mac works for me. I do my web design and programming all on a Mac.Just a tip for any Mac user, if you are using Boot Camp, don't use Parallels and vice versa. Because both programs needs to activate your Windows CD key, you can't use it for both. Unfortunately, that is a huge flaw in the Parallels software.

I was looking for a hybrid layout where the header and footer are set to full percentage width and the content is set to a fix width, a very popular layout in today's websites. Do you think you could provide such an example? Not that I do not know how to create one, I just want to know about the right way to actually layout with such specifications.

Php Or Asp? need help on opinion what to master first
darran replied to jopak134's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Personally I would use TextEdit or Dreamweaver Code view as you are totally in charge of your own coding. It would probably be easier if you can find an editor which gives you hints on the syntax and methods available, but then again that's just me. -
I have been hearing by many that I am able to use an existing partition which in this case is via bootcamp, but I do not know where I can find this option to select in the preference. I read on some forums that I can use the same serial after 4 months since Microsoft will remove the registered information from their database. My Windows XP partition is not pre-installed with the OS, I just basically used my Windows XP retail version to install it.

Of course above all that, you need to have the services running on your PC. The 3 services available are apache and mysql. Filezilla is bundled as well, but you don't really need that if you are just simply testing out PHP pages.

Hi all, I am running a Mac and I have a Windows XP home edition already installed on another partition via boot camp. Then I ran into Parallels and began installing it. However, instead of using the existing installation via boot camp, it is asking me to provide a cd key to activate XP. I couldn't possibly provide a cd key as I already used it to activate. How can I get Parallels to use the existing installation without asking me to provide another cd key?I gave up and thought of uninstalling Parallels but I couldn't do it on the Windows side as I was required to uninstall the application via running Parallels which was literally impossible since I could not even get to the desktop screen.Would appreciate it if any mac user who had solved this issue replies.

Php Or Asp? need help on opinion what to master first

I believe the best way to master the language is that you actually working on it without any assistance. In other words, start creating PHP pages with any text editor, notepad would be a good choice. Refer to the documentation if you need any reference to any functions you might want to use. XAMPP is a great tool to use if you are using Windows, if you are using Mac and do not want to load up your site, you can use MAMP, pretty good tool to emulate the apache web server and mysql. I am still learning PHP as we speak, getting to terms with the syntax and also how it works. -

PHP is a server script, while JavaScript is more of a client script. PHP will form the bulk of your site's functionalities, JavaScript on the other hand will enhance it. So I would advice you to start off with mastering PHP before making use of JavaScript to further enhance your site. Of course, if you do not know basic HTML and CSS, be sure to learn it before hopping onto a server side language -
I don't understand your dilemma. Xisto provides everything for you, web hosting as well as a domain name if you have enough credits for it. You can easily get what you want with Xisto, the only catch is that you have to have lots of credits and that is only possible by posting regularly, but looking at the number of posts you have to your name, that shouldn't be a problem now would it?

I agree, I believe what you are trying to emulate are examples of blog posts except that the data will not be stored in a sql table but rather a file. Am I right? There are several alternatives out there like WordPress, CuteNews ... etc

I didn't exactly reboot. Power down everything and power it up again.192.168.1.1 by right is your localhost, did you try it on your host computer? Meaning the computer which has your eternet cable plugged in directly to the source?
-
What I do when I freshly plug in an eternet cable is to actually shut everything off and switch it on again and usually this works for me. You can always use the wireless connections and double click on the network you want to connect automatically. Or you can use 192.168.1.1 on your host computer to actually configure the router settings. Not sure if I managed to help though.

A very clean layout which makes reading your site an ease on the eyes. Though it lacks any real CSS creativity, for e.g. your link hovers are a simple underline, or an underline disappears. Lacks any real design to actually convince me to appreciate its beauty. You have already gotten off to a good start, so why not build it on and finish off with a classy and attractive look?

Some Pages On My Site Won't Even Load..
darran replied to DSGamer3002's topic in Web Hosting Support
I have no problem accessing my site which is hosted on Xisto - Web Hosting. I think this issue should be raised in the hosted members forum insted. -
HP have never struck to me as a brand which is good in graphics processing. They are more suited for businessman who needs to have their laptop on the go for presentations and meetings. If you are actually looking into graphic processing, I would suggest a Macbook or Macbook Pro to you because Macs are born together with designers. At the same time, if you are purchasing a Mac notebook, do not buy the Macbook Air because of its pretty looks, you are going to suffer a lot when it comes to doing work with it.

This really sounds a like a potentially good competitor. When I use Google, I normally do not get the past the 2nd page of results because most of it are simply irrelevant to what I am looking for. When results get rated, I am actually quite intrigued as to how the whole system works, how does the engine determines what you rated is relevant to a particular search term?

I have already submitted a ticket and the wonderful staff at Xisto - Web Hosting has replied me.One quick question, if at any point of time during my hosting period I want to upgrade to a better hosting plan, will my current one be void? For e.g. I am using Plan B now, but what if at any point of time, I want to upgrade to Plan C. Is there any complications involved? If so, please let me know.

I have registered on Digg and actually got down to using it. It works decently well because I have had a couple of visits coming from Digg looking at my articles. Though it isn't much, it is indeed boosting my traffic. The 2 sites you have mentioned, they don't seem very popular and running though. How different are those sites from services such as Pingo-matic?

I have been using flickr for more than a year now but I am not sure whether that is the direction I want to be heading any longer. I intend to host all my images on my server though I am fully aware I may be sacrificing a lot of bandwidth just to load them, but at least I feel safe that my images do not disappear if one day Flickr goes down permanently.

It is ironic when you say you don't like Macs because their GUI is ugly, especially when Vista took some of their visual ideas from the Mac. About the right mouse button, if you actually insert a non Mac mouse, the right mouse button would function properly. If you love the Mac mouse, then control + click is the way to go. How can you say a Mac is bulky, I got a 20" iMac and it has definitely saved much more space than my previous PC which had such a bulky CPU. I just have a monitor which functions as everything. So bulky is the last thing a Mac would be. And again, I do game occasionally so sometimes when I am bored, I would boot up Windows XP via boot camp and start playing. But most of the time I am on Leopard. I am not a hardcore graphics designer but I am using a Mac, it is an overall much better OS than Windows in my opinion.
-
Well I take it that you are refering to me as an "idiot", whether personal or not, I leave it to you. I am web developer, but I still use a Mac. A Mac usage are not confined to just those professions. To start off, I find a Mac beautiful yet classy, it does what I need to do well and efficient, what can I ask for? Put that through Windows, and probably I will get error messages not knowing how did it specifically come about. Microsoft may have taken the idea from Apple, notice how similar the design idea is? A geunine idea by Microsoft seems very unlikely. If Vista is anything like you have said: Shouldn't it be performing much better in its sales instead of releasing statements like Vista was released too early and have its consumers stick to it instead of XP? What's wrong with Linux? There are enough essential programs to go around, for e.g. open office, gimp, audacity just to name a few. Unless you are primarily using your computer to game, Linux is alright if you intend to make it your primary OS.

Google Vs *other Search Engine* Which is the best???
darran replied to Thorn's topic in Search Engines
Based on my site's analytics, Google is definitely the cream of the crop, for example searching for 'dark theme bartelme widget' would probably land my site in their search results, but put just one of the search terms in it and you won't find my site listed. On the other hand if you were to use Live, you would find my site listed with just one of those search terms like for e.g. dark, which makes no sense at all considering that there must be a zillion sites on the web which has the keyword dark in it.
