  3. Hi ElFoReal, from what you describe..it sounds like the drive is dead : ( : (IF the read head is making contact with the HD disk.. then you can be pretty sure that that part of the disk is "toast" .However there MIGHT be a part of the disk that hasn't been damaged yet.. IF the read head has been getting "stuck" part of the way across the disk.Basically you have only 2 options:> send it out to a HD recovery shop (very expensive) :POption 2 (beware you risk permanently losing any data that might be undamaged yet by using this method). You will ONLY get 1 shot at it !!> get a linux based boot CD (ie. Knoppix or Pengiun Sleuth...etc.) & make sure it works by testing it in a good machine first.> remove the damage hard drive> place the hard drive on its side/edge on a flat surface.> GENTLY rap the edge of the hard drive against the flat surface 1X-2X.> turn the HD over & repeat the previous step on the opposite side/edge.> re-install the HD>Boot the computer using the linux CDIf you can "see" any of the files- copy them IMMEDIATELY to CD or another HD.If you can't "see" any of the files using the linux CD- then it's REALLY dead. Send it out for data recovery OR junk it. :P :PHope this helpsRGPHNX

  9. Hi all, came across this newspaper article (& web posts about it) the other day. Thought it would be good for an opinion poll. re: more ways our personal privacy is being invaded. When will it all stop ? The article talks about government agencies gaining access to your personal files in an underhanded/"sneaky" way without "due process" of law (ie. court orders..etc). Here's the link(s) : http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/ln01a.html-FBI& computer repair shops Guess everyone should learn computer encryption & hard drive "wiping" security precautions BEFORE having your computer repaired. What do you think ? RGPHNX "The man who trades liberty for security deserves neither" Hi again all, the previous link at the Honalulu advertizer newspaper has been taken down. Hmmmmmm..... Wonder why ? Here's a new link to the complete article (thank heavens for the internet ! ) http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ What do you think ? RGPHNX Notice from BuffaloHELP: Next time if you need to double post to correct your previous post, don't forget to click on REPORT with message to merge or to correct the link. Merged two posts.
  10. Hi again suz, re: In general what you want is to have incoming links (ie. people linking to you) to link to your main page to improve your PR. From what I've read...That is generally considered to me more effective in building PR than having links spread out all over on the "subpages" in your website. After you get enough links to to your homepage.. go for more links to your websites' subpages which wlii build the PR for each individual subpage. Some of this is open to speculation because Google won't disclose exactly how they assign PR to pages.Hope this helps RGPHNX
  11. Hi all, Yup, its not how long your connected to the net that matters .. it's HOW your connected & WHAT programs your using to connect that create the security problem. re: This is entirely accurate. One of the best ways to protect your self is a firewall + (plus) actively scanning antivirus software. Even better is a hardware firewall Plus a software firewall Plus a anti-virus program. If anyone needs quick links for software firewalls (some free) you can check out the "links" page at my website. Also, DON"T use software that been proven to have security "leaks"/vulnerabilities,,etc....Like IE , Kazza (& other file sharing proggies) IMs & others. Also.. scan ALL downloads BEFORE you click on them-ALWAYS. Never.. click on e-mail attachments before scanning with antiv-rus programs first. Hope this helps RGPHNX
  12. Hi all. re: Thanks for the kudo/compliment. Glad to be of help. Also, Nice to know that there's other people here who will do a little "hard core" reading to get at the truth. Hope the explaination will help others also. Cheers to all RGPHNX

  14. Hi overdrive2023x,From what you describe..it sounds like your monitor is going bad. You can troubleshoot it using the charts at my website in the "Beginners" section. Can't say if its fixable.. but you could save your self a bunch of $$ by taking it directly to a TV repair service. Most Computer shops don't do CRT monitor repair these days & ship them out to TV repair shops instead.Hope this helpsRGPHNX

  16. Hi again all, re: What a "heuristic" ID trys to identify is a part of the virus program that is UNIQUE to that particular virus. The other parts of the virus code (which often use some of the same instructions that other programs use [eg. Windows OS..etc] ) usually remain unchanged from one version to the next. If the anti-virus scanners tried to ID a piece of code that BOTH the virus and Windows used.. then.. the Windows program would also show up as a virus. That's why the "new" versions of the virus are called "variants".. the ID part of the code has changed..but.. NOT.. the rest of the code which is not unique and therefore can't be used as a ID to identify the virus. Hope this is clear RGPHNX ps- if you need a more detailed explaination you'll have to do some research on virus writing. There's lots of tutorials on the web.
  17. Hi again all,There's also an second excellent group of articles available via email from an expert author over at http://www.seochat.com/ . Just go to the forums & search on the name "Brad Callen". His advice is spot on & very helpful for sorting out everything you've heard elsewhere.Hope this helps,RGPHNX
  18. Hi ManOfSTEEL,Both Furor & Styx are correct.First, Scan your computer for virus, spyware etc. Second, check your "msconfig" file.Third, do a hardware troubleshoot for parts problems. Be sure to checl ALL your ribbon (IDE) drive cables & connections. That should solve it for you.Hope this helpsRGPHNXPS-iF YOU NEED MORE HELP POST BACK.
  19. Hi BigmanB,Saga & WeaponX are both correct. When you re-partitioned you drive.. you probably lost the driver program for your dvd/cd drive. Windows uses a generic "default" driver that cannot make your drive work properly. If you need more help troubleshooting & re-installing the drive.. you can go to my website in the "Beginners Charts" section for a step by step guide.Hope this helpsRGPHNX
  20. Hi all,anti-virus scanners using "heuristic scanning" methods are totally defenseless against true "polymorphic" type viruses because the virus' "signature " is totally changed each time it "mutates". Thats precisely why the the whole "hurry to catchup" scenario by all the anti-virus companies exists. Unfortunately, there's probably never going to be a totally automated, 100% effective, scanning anti-virus program. As long as the enduser lets the computer make automated changes to the OS files (like Windows does).. the computer will always be vulnerable to attack.RGPHNX

  24. Hi suz (Fun4TheMoney, Here's the real scoop on links. People linking to your pages, any page-it doesn't matter, will NOT negatively affect your PR. It will ONLY enhance it ! Next, when you link to other peoples pages... it will "pass PR", ie. negatively affect your own PR , but not very much for each link. Google (or any other search engine) has NEVER and probably will never hold you accountable for other peoples actions that are out of your control. That only makes sense, doesn't it ? Hope this helps RGPHNX PS- If you need help on this & other SEO questions, you can find lots of true experts over at the following forum. http://www.seochat.com/
  25. Hi BeyondEarth,Your two issues are both related. Theyre probably related to your computer not being configured correctly with your DSL modem(box). You internet provider can (and should) help you with this issue.Hope this helps RGPHNX
