I have installed PHP5+Apache2.2 and now I am trying to configure the DocumentRoot folder. I am running Windows XP SP3.
By default it is the htdocs folder within the Apache2.2 folder. I want it to point to a folder on another computer so I have tried a few options:

Y:/Desktop/Shared\\192.168.0.199/someuser/Desktop/Shared
\\MAIN-PC/someuser/Desktop/Shared
//MAIN-PC/someuser/Desktop/Shared
//192.168.0.199/someuser/Desktop/Shared

All of them have not worked so far. The Windows Event Log reports an error from the Apache Service when starting saying that "DocumentRoot must be a directory", which I'm sure it is. I can access the directory fine in Windows Explorer and I have read/write access. I can start the service under my account or the SYSTEM account, neither will work.
One thing that I can try is to map a network drive/connect to it under SYSTEM, but I don't know how to do that. Otherwise can anyone help me with this problem?

Well, it's free to a certain extent. To get additional features which I don't need (although batch processing would be great for my 71 files), you need to buy it. Well, at least I don't have 700 files to do

It would be nice to have a documentation on that on how to get started on simple tasks. I can't even get the command line or GUI to open.

I would prefer freeware or even better, open-source software. I know that A-PDF has a "free" version, but it watermarks your files with it's logo or something.

From scanning all of my documents, I have acquired approximately 50 PDF files of various sizes. I would like to separate each PDF file into separate pages (1 file per page). I would prefer to input a bunch of files and let the program process them and output them into a separate directory (much like PhotoWham! does for JPEGs).Also it would be great if I could automatically remove blank pages because a lot of the documents were not double-sided but I set it to double-sided mode in case.

Internet Explorer works fine, and the TV guide provider loads fine as well when accessed within a browser.

I have tried disabling the proxy and using it and it makes no difference.

Windows Vista/7 warns you that 2 antivirus applications may conflict on your computer, which is true. It can slow down system performance due to the extra processing of files and suppose that you have files quarantined in one antivirus, another antivirus software could possibly detect the quarantined files as viruses and they would move them back and forth endlessly.

Personally I use AVG Free on Windows 7/Windows XP and Shaw Secure (F-Secure) on Windows Vista. I do not run more than 2 antivirus softwares, but I do run a few antispyware applications.

As a side note, popular commercial/free antivirus software such as McAfee, Norton, Shaw Secure(F-Secure), AVG and Trend Micro all prompt you to uninstall existing antivirus software, and some even refuse to install if it detects existing antivirus software.

Never used windows 7 before, so I think I can't help you lot. But, are you using proxy? Have you checked your connection? I mean, are you able to connect to TV guide provider (try pinging it)? Have you checked the regional setting in control panel and in MP configuration. You might also checked your time and date setting etc.

My regional settings, date and time are set correctly. In Windows Media Center, my region is set to Canada, which is correct.

I have had this issue forever now since I have Xisto Hosting but I'm wondering if it is safe.

In Internet Explorer the certificate error tab appears when I try to access http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. In Firefox 3.5, this shows up:

portal.trap17.com:2083 uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is not trusted because it is self signed.
The certificate is only valid for gamma.xisto.com.
The certificate expired on 05/06/2009 1:15.

So is it safe to use cPanel without worrying about other sites looking at my data or what?

I have tried several times now with no luck. I have disabled Windows Firewall and AVG Anti-Virus, it did not make a difference.

You can manually download the Guide in the Settings section under Tasks. Under TV, press Get Latest Guide Listings. If that doesn't do it, reset up your guide, the system will overwrite the old guide data.

It prompts me to download guide listings, and when I manually try to download them it says that they are already downloading, but it's been weeks and the guide is still "No data available".
I also tried setting up the TV again (choosing a cable provider with the postal code), but the wizard freezes when it says "Download more information to continue setup...".

You are right, it seems stupid. However, if a Judge tells Microsoft that he has to stop giving IE6 for free, this means that you have to buy your browser and stop getting it for free bundled with your OS.

Why do you keep talking about IE6? It's IE8 that's bundled with Windows 7 for non-European versions.

I am using Windows 7 RC as my primary operating system right now, and my dad just pre-ordered the Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade because Vista is too malfunctiony to work. I am having an issue with the Media Center in Windows 7, particularly the TV guide.In Windows Vista the TV guide works fine and periodically downloads data every 3 days or so. In Windows 7, data hasn't been downloaded for over a month. All my channels say "No data available". Without the TV guide, Media Center won't record anything because it doesn't know when the shows are on. I am in Canada, using Shaw Cable as my TV provider with analog TV (if that helps).Is there a file I can delete to reset the TV guide function or what can I do?

Personally, I don't know what M$ is going to do. I can guess what is easy to do and what could be complicated. But I have no idea if they really intend to automatically install competitor's browsers.By the way, if M$ has to automatically install competitor's browsers, I guess that reciprocally the competitors will have to do the same thing. I am curious to see on the Mozilla site a link "click here if you want to install IE6"

But Mozilla doesn't have an operating system so it wouldn't make sense for them to put a link telling people to download Internet Explorer.

You do not need a browser to download anything from the web, there are other ways of getting things, FTP, TELNET, BITTORRENT come to mind for this, also, windows explorer does have basic browsing capabilities built into it for those who do not know the old school way of downloading software.

Windows Explorer uses the Internet Explorer shell to browse the Internet prior to IE7. I highly doubt that Microsoft will install a BitTorrent client on Windows 7 just to allow people to download browsers. I also doubt that they will distribute Internet Explorer via the P2P because it is unreliable.

And as for telnet, ok, upon installation:

A browser allows you to view Web sites on the Internet. With previous versions of Windows, Internet Explorer was included. Please choose the browser you wish to install:

If that's how the software is supposed to be downloaded, through telnet, people will be way too confused to install any browsers.

Due to antitrust regulations and stuff I don't really understand, Microsoft is releasing a version of Windows 7 which is browserless. This version, called Windows 7 "E", is to be released in Europe only. Everyone else in Canada, US, Australia, any other non-European countries will receive the standard editions of Windows 7 (Home premium and Professional) with the Internet Explorer 8 browser included.

I think that this is a great option for Microsoft in order to help balance out the browser competition. Because Firefox and Opera are so popular in Europe already, it doesn't make a huge difference. I think that Microsoft however should release the "E" version to everyone, not just European countries.

Personally, I think the best option for this is when Windows 7 is first installed, a screen should come up asking if users want to install Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera or Chrome. These are the most popular browsers, and Microsoft can add others like Flock if they wish. This is the best option because if the operating system is browserless, you cannot go to Microsoft's web site (or Mozilla) to download Internet Explorer or Firefox.

On my Windows Vista SP2 machine, Safari runs quite fast. The lack of extensibility is still a big disadvantage to me though. I like the Developer tools where it visually shows you the process of scripts and the network progress though.On my Windows XP SP3 computer, Safari runs extremely slowly for some reason. It uses the same network settings over the wireless network but compared to other browsers, Safari doesn't load the pages half the time for some reason.Overall my browser preferences would go in this order:Firefox/Flock, Google Chrome/Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer, Konqueror

A big photocopy engine very often has an embedded scanner, and some of them allow saving the scanned file, yes, it's a smart solution.

It turned out to take much longer than I expected because of 2 things:

Crinkled/ripped paper jams easily in the feeder

I didn't know that so many of my documents had staples in them.

Nonetheless, it is quite fast and now I have to download 50 PDF files and split them apart.

If the scanner is big enough, you can put as many documents as you could at one time, say 10. This way at least it could reduce your labors down to one 10th since your documents 90% of it is in regular 8.5"*11" letter sized paper. And I am so curious about the solution to this problem you found, could you sharing it with us? Thank you!

The solution: I am requesting permission from administration to use the school photocopier to do this, which can take approximately 100 documents each time and create a PDF file with 100 pages. The PDF will be emailed to me when it is complete. This way I will only have to reload the documents 20 times or so (I found out I had less documents than estimated).

It isn't books, 90% of it is in regular 8.5"*11" letter sized paper. Some of them are on 11"*17" but those are not that common.Anyways, I have found a solution to this problem that will create one huge PDF file approximately 100 sheets at a time.

I have been wondering if there is a fast way of doing this. I have 3 piles of documents that I would like to store digitally on the computer as PDFs or whatever. This translates into approximately 3000 documents, maybe a bit less.

Lexmark X5070 all-in-one

Windows XP SP3/Windows Vista SP1/Windows 7 Beta/Ubuntu 9

Anything that came with the all-in-one

The whole process of scanning the document, waiting for the computer processing the image and saving it takes a total of 50 seconds or so per document. By going non-stop, I estimate this will take at least 42 hours to do this.

 

I was wondering if there was a way for the all-in-one to take, say 60 papers, scan them one by one and save them with image1.png, image2.png or whatever. I need to do this automatically so I can leave it unattended for an hour without sitting there putting papers in and watching the progress bar over and over.

 

The documents contain a lot of textual information (right now I'm not focused on newspaper clippings) and typing them up would take even longer. All I need is PNGs or PDFs automatically created, then I'll sort through them in My Documents. The first priority is getting rid of the physical papers and recycling them!!

 

Any idea on how to do this?

I found out about this Facebook linked accounts feature through Download.com or CNET somewhere, but I can't find it now. Social networking is not blocked, but other categories are blocking Myspace and I do not have a problem with that.

Does anyone know how to duplicate user accounts in Windows Vista? I am running Home Premium right now so I do not have Group Policy Editor. I have looked into "control userpasswords2" but there is no Copy option, only Add and Remove.This isn't for backup purposes, otherwise I could just back up the %Homedrive%\Users\. I need to actually make 2 copies of the user account. I know user accounts also have the associated registry folders in HKEY_USERS but I do not want to do something really complicated.Is there any way to duplicate user accounts in Windows Vista?

Recently, Facebook has allowed you to link your Facebook account with profiles/accounts on Google, Yahoo!, Myspace as well as any openID (most notably myOpenId, which has its own separate option).

As of right now, I am aware of the fact that by being logged onto Google or openID, you can be automatically logged into Facebook if you linked your accounts. This does not work with Yahoo! (a message states that), and I did not have a chance to test Myspace because OpenDNS blocks it.

I think that Facebook is moving in the right direction here. Because users use their email address to sign up for Facebook, they aren't creating a Facebook ID (although there are ID numbers), but support for openID is definitely a big step. I am also surprised that Facebook allows Myspace users to log in.

Major companies are supporting openID, it's about time.

To link your Facebook account with other sites, go to /login.php?next=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fsettings&_fb_noscript=1 and choose the appropriate service. You will have to log into the other site to identify yourself.
