  1. I think in general "localhost" is all that is needed, that of course is assuming that the script is hosted at T17, and if it isnt then i dont think the connection would be allowed by the rules or the firewall anyway. So give "localhost" a shot. Its the default setting for using the host that the script is on so it always works for me! then again i only use it in: mysql_connect("localhost", "blah", "blah"); but i judge that the variable you are using is going to be used in a connect function anyway and so it should work.
  2. Tis true. As i said ive joined a self defence/karate class so that will help and the idea with this particular "weapon" methinks is that its fairly basic, a string with a weight at the end so it should be easy to take control of methinks. The Kobutan would be harder to learn and use effectively i think.
  3. Hello everyone. this weekend i joined a nice karate class that focusses heavily on self defence (half the lesson was self defence with the other half equally warm up and kata so it really is good for SD ) Anyway, the instructor had a Kubaton (think its spelt right) which is one of these: used to hurt pressure points and therefore take control of a situation. Now im looking for a self defence tool that is also a keychain, this way its concealable and explainable to police etc while still being practical. I thought about a kubaton but its not as easy to explain, its rather clear its a weapon, and in the UK the government is practically a dictatorship and so even such a small tool as this could easilly land me a fine and a criminal record for "carrying a weapon" yeah... 'cause im gonna mug someone with that aint i.... So i kept looking and heard stories of a "sharpshooter" keychain which is this: basically the weight near the keys adds power and you swing it like a flail at the face etc and just slash and cut and hurt, also for self defence and it seems better than a kubaton becuase it has longer range and would need less technique (as for the kabuton you need to get the attacker into the right position so you can easily pinpoint pressure points and use it properly) so does anyone know the name of such a keychain in the UK? Ive tried sharpshooter but i jsut get guns and slingshots etc... I did find one similar, it was a metal chain, about twice the length of that one i linked with the keyring on the end and this looks very useful and easy to explain ( "yes officer its just my keychain that i clip to my belt so i dont drop my keys"). Are there any websites that sell such things? Im looking on ebay but they dont seem to have any and i cant find any sites. Im thinking of making my own from a length of chain from a hardware store, a belt clip/loop and taking the ring off a standard keyring. I have 5 keys so it will have weight to it. Does this seem a good idea? PS: I dont want any "you shouldnt carry weapons blah blah blah" Maybe i shouldnt but this isnt just a weapon, its not illegal, its virtually impossible to turn back on myself because it will need practice and its not as if i could ever use it to mug someone but its perfect for defending myself.
  4. the thing i find is that the mirrors seems to curve off to the bottom left or right so i try to shift myself to get them exactly straight, never works though! What i find interesting about mirrors is the fact that if you asked someone what colour a mirror is, they would say silver, yet when we look into a mirror we see no colour, only whatever colour is being reflected... its interesting because if you look at a mirror it looks silver, but then you realize you cant see the mirror's colour just a reflection, and even if that reflection is red, the mirror is still silver...
  5. Debatable... As i said if you're using PHP to make dynamic content you have to be careful what you do with it. For example there was a topic not so long ago about a PHP script to automatically, and randomly change the website title. but this is very bad for SEO as it is constantly changing and is hard to index in search results etc... so something like that is inadvisable. but you certainly dont need to learn PHP to use SEO though i would advise HTML and the things posted above.
  6. Im not an SEO expert but i know a little... firstly a good understanding of how search engines work is good. Eg how keywords, meta tags etc... work and how to register with search engines ( i wrote a tut on this forum about joining google, use the search function) a good understanding of HTML is important because you will need that to make the pages and therefore influence the SEO of the site and a good understanding of web standards is also important. Im not sure why PHP is in the title of this topic, PHP has little influence in SEO unless you use it to create dynamic pages etc... where the content varies as this can affect what SEO you use on the page and it can bring down its page rank in google if the content is too changeable. Also a good "ring" of related, high quality websites will help too as google uses links to and from webpages to determine their quality.so yes some technical skills are needed, not so much programming but more an understanding of the principals and how to influence the rank of the website. If you dont already know it, HTML is a definite necessity for SEO and any website making really. Any SEO done by WYSIWYG editors like frontpage should always be checked and improved by hand.
  7. I hate the Olympic bid...what the hell...not only are we paying for it out of tax etc... but in the UK we have the national lottery which is ?1 to play and you can win prizes like ?8m so its a lot of money... now if no-one wins it for a certain (and quite long time) or if a winning ticket isnt claimed as i understand it this money goes into funding charities and literally millions of pounds every year must be going into these charity funds...but not any more. the government STOLE, yes they stole (ok so it wasnt illegal but you get my point) money from these charity funds to pay for the frikking Olympics. i dont know the figures but i know it was millions they stole from the lottery.now not only is it expensive to build this Olympics but it will invite more bloody immigrants to this country. As said we dont have enough houses or prison spaces and I'm telling you illegal immigrants take up both so then we dont have enough houses for the "native" residents of this country (and in my opinion we come first over immigrants in housing) and people will use the Olympics as en excuse to come into this country and they wont leave.England is in a shocking state and the Olympics and our thieves of the government just make it worse.
  8. I too dream in colour and am surprised to hear some dont...however, this poses a question, do we all dream in black and white?Perhaps those of us that "remember" "dreaming" in colour actually dont, maybe we dream in B&W but when we start to wake our brain changes this memory by adding colour according to our perceptions. EG Grass would be a shade of grey in the dream but as we wake our brain tells our memory area that grass is green and colours it in for us to make it more acceptable...Just a thought...It seems more difficult for the brain to dream in B&W though as in waking life everything we see (except old films) is in colour so the brain would have to then de-colour things... Unless of course the brain only "sees" in B&W and colour is something the brain adds in.
  9. to be honest the entire Multiplayer side of COD4 sucks major...I mean yes, the level up is good and all but there is no split screen support, the game lobby is frankly disappointing, there is no ability to choose a level or modify any settings unless you set up a private match. And that really sucks.. Not being able to modify settings like score limits, time limits, spawn protection, spawn delays etc....Its ridiculous. Also the amount of times you will loose a connection is just stupid (my net connection is fast and stable, i play several online games on both PC and xbox and none have this issue) It just looks like they spent the bare minimum of time, effort and money on the multiplayer side... Disappointing.
  10. Ah i see, I imagine that such a private server could be very fun if you had several friends over with their machines and played together..anyway I see what you mean about it being interesting to see the back-end of such servers and being a PHP and MSQL coder myself i can see the attraction! I think it would be a good idea to make such a tutorial. State that it is for educational purposes etc... and that way you're safe! all tutorials are looked over by a mod before being shown to everyone so if theres a problem they will tell you about it before showing the tutorial on the forums. they wont ban you or anything so you dont have anything to loose. Just keep a copy of it in case the mods decide it cant be posted and dont save it, that way you can stick it up on the net somewhere else
  11. I would be interested in reading it as i play WOW but i dont think i would follow it as for me creating a private server to do fast level ups and get super items etc.. would take the fun out of the real game but i think it would be interesting to read.As for breaking the rules... i would suggest waiting for a Mod to agree but i think this would only break the terms of use of WOW and not actually the law and therefore would probably be allowed on here. But wait for a mod to confirm or deny.
  12. the best editor you can get IMHO is PHPDesigner (Google it) and its free for personal use (which is why i use it)It has syntax highlighting and copes very well with comments of both kinds. It also has hints when coding eg typing "mysql_connect()" brings up a tooltip above telling you what data it needs (host, username and password) It also autocompletes statements by adding the ending brackets and when you enter a quote (either single or double) it automatically adds the second, closing, quote for you do you dont forget. It has these functions for many languages including C, CSS, HTML, Python etc.. and also a plain text editing function with no highlighting etc... and the ability to customize the highlighting. Its perfect in every way really and it also includes a browser (based on IE i suspect) that you can use to view HTML files while creating them, it also works with PHP files providing you have set up a local server and configured the program to work with it.I use windows XP and this program works fine on this and Vista. Im not sure about Nix systems but check the website. Same goes for Mac
  13. What problems are you having? do you know your username, password and FTP address?do yo have ftp software? And do you know which folder to upload to? Get back to us with some info (dont post your FTP username or password on the forums) and we should be able to help
  14. the website of the club is seemaf.co.uk the vids i saw though were just on youtube and weren't related to this website, they were mostly of world tournament events. Thats what interested me. Although i only went karate for a short time there was no mention or hints of throws etc.. and from my basic understanding of karate it was essentially blocks and strikes with the odd Joint lock or pressure point thrown in for self defence etc... So perhaps the videos i saw involved Mixed Martial arts/inclusion of self defence techniques rather than pure karate.
  15. Very comprehensive list there! Im glad to say my AV and my FW are on that list, being Avast and Comodo. And i second the good quotes of Comodo. It is powerful for advanced users, you can create your own rules etc... and yet so simple for newbies, the firewall creates its own rules as default and you can send off any security reports to the comodo techs for analysis and then advice on if you should allow or deny the connections which really helps newbies or even techies who see an unrecognised but possibly essential connection. Ive tried and seen AVG in action but i truly prefer Avast, the AVG UI is outdated and it seems weak compared to avast. Avast comes with a connection monitor and an on access scanner to actively watch files for any unauthorized modification. Updates come daily, sometimes twice a day and its UI is very easy to use, allowing boot time scans (effectively a safe mode scan) selected file/folder scans and an addition to the right click menu to scan individual files or folders right from the right-click menu. One thing i dont technically have is a website checker, i do use the WOT add-on for FF and the Phishtank one too which show a website's rating and compare URL's to those known to be phishing websites. But when i get in later i shall check those programs out
  16. Well... I've only studied business at A level so this isnt concrete advice but here goes.... Firstly i would imagine you might need to specialize your product further.. Maybe have some flash drives with essential (and free) software installed like document editors or something that would be useful for your class mates to have. Then they have a reason to buy from you and not from the school supplies office or something, because you offer them something else that others dont. Keep some flash drives empty and sell them that way as some people only want the storage. You could also offer free services like defragging of the drives but only on the ones bought from you, its unlikely they will need this service but its sort of like a bonus for them. As for a website... definitely make one if you can do it free and easily, because i fear that as you are a starting business and you sell only one product, flash drives, people would be reluctant to purchase things online from you. I wouldnt buy anything from a small company on the net.Remember to make or advertise your USP, Unique Selling Point, as this is what will tempt buyers to buy from you and not from the competition. you could offer bundles of products, maybe a flash drive, lanyard (the ribbon round your neck to hold it, assuming it doesnt come with one anyway), free software on disc or installed on request and a guarantee for a year or so against it breaking. You need to be as unique as can be, and out of interest what is the name of this competition? I live in the UK and i havent heard of it but id be interested to see how people do. I assume its a school thing otherwise i might be interested myself!
  17. Im with elaks, in the UK ive never heard such a pronunciation of the word so perhaps its Americanized English which isnt English at all, its American! I hate that confusion... English is the language spoke in he land of England. the language spoken in America is a corrupted version of the English language.
  18. I dont think there is but im probably wrong. Most hosting companies will have this set to OFF by default for their own security as well as yours. you can easily check by making a PHPINFO(); command within an otherwise empty PHP page and looking through the output. If it is set to ON Then i would recommend emailing the hosting company and asking for it to be changed to OFF. Even better would be to email their support before registering just to make sure.there could be a way to use PHP code to do change the values but i dont know of it and i suspect it doesnt exist as in itself it would be a security flaw, allowing a hacker to change a lot of settings and give him/herself an easier time inside.
  19. Ah this age old problem.... There should be a sticky about this methinks... For the record the reason you have to assign the variable like that is because of a setting in the PHP.ini files on T17 servers and the reason it is like that is for security. Because if, for example, you had a variable called $level that controls what the user can see, either normal, or aadmin options. With the normal set up all a hacker has to do is type &level=admin into the URL and they are an admin but with the T17 setup this wouldnt work and so is more secure. For more info see: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ And if you want to turn this option off on your local server so that you dont accidentally forget the set up is different go into your PHP folder on your installation and locate the php.ini file and change the line "register_globals" from ON to OFF
  20. Afternoon all!Further to my last post about starting a martial art ive found a local promising club that teaches Shotokan karate and seems ideal for me/Background info on me: Im 18, male not fit as it were and looking for a class to go to where i can learn fighting, self defence, get exercise and have fun. I'll be going with a female friend who is also 18, not athletic but not obese either, she has no experience of martial arts and ive only been once before for about 6 weeks.I explained this on the club's forum and organizer emailed me with more info about the club and told me they teach shotokan with an emphasis on practical street defence. Ive done a little searching on Shotokan karate and it seems very good, the only thing is it seems to include a lot of throws where my last class in karate never mentioned throwing or grappling, only how to get out of headlocks etc... for SD. Now i know most martial arts dont depend on physical strength to throw someone, they rely on their own motion and throwing their balance etc... But is Shotokan ideal for two beginners like me and my friend? The organizer seems to suggest it would be fine for us and i expect it will because the vids i saw were of blackbelts sparring so i expect we wont be learning such advanced moves too early. So what are your experiences with Shotokan karate/ And would you recommend it?It does seem very promising especially as its the only local club and it does seem very good for conditioning the mind and body as it were as well as a good hobby. Im hoping to go there this saturday to observe and talk to the people there and make my mind up.
  21. Interestingly i can see it from the second like you provided with the .cc domain name but not from the T17 subdomain so perhaps it has something to do with the T17 cache? Or the name servers or a cache that is between you and T17 such as your ISP's .Try forcing the refresh of your browsers cache with CTRL+F5 and try looking at it from the .cc domain name.It could just need a little while to fix itself so try again soon and see what happens. And although it seems you've done so remember to delete the old Index file and make sure that there are no other index files on your space other than the one you uploaded and check it to make sure that is the one you uploaded. As i said i expect you've done that but you cant troubleshoot properly until you can be sure of all the things it cant be
  22. I did a little karate, about 6 weeks and ill be starting again soon hopefully but from my experience and what ive heard karate and most likely other martial arts arent the best thing for self defence, my theory is that with karate you learn to adopt a certain stance and are taught moves that are best when an attack comes from a specific place or person or angle and you have plenty of room to swing your body etc.. but in the street it could be a guy who just walks up to you and demands your money, you might be in a tight space or it could be a case of face to face combat in which case specific self defence classes are better. However, MA's (One member here seems to be rather proficient in several MA's and so can help more) are really good for teaching you general fighting skills and confidence, discipline etc... but for actual self defence you would be better to go to a SD class as they will teach you how to use objects like telephones, brooms, stones, anything you can find to take the other guy down and they wont be afraid to tell you to go kicking in the balls (literally) if you need to where karate will generally stay away from "dirty" tactics like slamming a brick into their head (dont do that.. bad idea!)SO if you're looking for a hobby and some self defence go for a MA, thats what im going for, a hobby, fitness and a bit of SD but if you purely want hardcore self defence i would suggest an SD club or even Judo or more close contact MA's. for example my dad went Judo and could easily throw someone over his shoulder into a wall... slightly more useful than trying to throw a roundhouse kick in a corridor or against a wall.but i guess in the end its personal preference and to define exactly what you want to learn, pure self defence or all the other perks but slightly less SD?
  23. jlhaslip covered good code there so take a look at that. Also google Tizag and maybe "php mysql tutorial" alongside it and you should find an excellent website for PHP and SQL tutorials which is where i learned all i know today.as for datatypes. Im a lazy person when it comes to DB's, unless you're going to be using functions like comparing two numbers to find the highest, or incrementing a number, or comparing dates you dont need to worry too much about data types (IMHO) So you can store a number in a TEXT field and it wont make any difference. Unless you ask the DB to compare the numbers to see which is higher etc.. then you have problems. Also with numbers in Ms access you couldnt start a number with 0 for some reason.. i dont know if this is true in MYSQl but if it is then numbers like phone numbers should always be in a TEXT field, otherwise you hit errors. As for text i just stick it into a TEXT field, it makes sense, i dont know the reason for all tghe other data types like blob and such.. they just seem useless when i have text, char and integer types. I guess its for validation but its better to validate with PHP and JS (or whatever language you're using) rather than passing it to the DB then handling the error it gives without showing the user a messy error message and then going back to the PHP page to get them to change it. Its just a waste of time and BW if you have a big site.
  24. I agree with SM, though i didnt know that the deleting of old posts would affect credits, i assumed credits were stored in a separate DB and not connected to posts as it were. Ingenious! And i totally disagree that T17 needs LESS forums. I think we have the right amount for the time being. I guess as SM said the tutorials section should be categorized a little and the make money forum should definitely be dropped, that might even lower the number of spammers that find T17 as i imagine "make money online" is a fairly big keyword if you plan on spamming up referral links. I see you're a fairly new member and i can understand how complicated and huge T17 might seem.. but its not complicated, it is rather large but simple once you've been here a little while. My advice is just when you make new topics have a good look for the right forum to put it under and put it there and you will get to know the forums etc... There are forums i haven't visited yet and I've been here well over a year.
  25. I just checked my Sys restore and it let me select dates of december 07, i didnt go any further than selecting the days using the calendar but it looks like it would let me... Ill assume you did use the left arrow button to try to go back a month?for the record im on XP pro SP2
