  1. After a bit of research, here's what I found. Imprinting and Parthenogenesis and the abstract of the study it references is at this Nature address (it costs money to read the full study). The study's interesting in this debate, because in it the scientists manage to create healty mice from parthenogenesis (through a large amount of genetic meddling), but use their findings to prove that parthenogenesis can't occur naturally in mammals. I guess everyone will take from it what they want ;-) Not that we were going to change anyone's mind anyway...
  2. To answer your question directly, the content's too far over to the right because it's outside of a table that it should be inside of (or so Firefox's webDev makes it look).About half way down the page you re-declare your doctype, html, head, embedded stylesheet, and body tag. The doctype needs to go at the top, the stylesheet needs to go in between the initial head tags, and the rest needs to be removed.Honestly, you have so many needless tables in there that it's hard to find where your exact problem is. I would suggest simplifying it down to a single table to arrange all the pieces, then add in your extra tables for effect, if you so desire. Better yet, since you already have stylesheets, you should be able to create the layout you want with only the initial table, or no tables at all (using <div> tags).
  3. The one pelborm wtih taht sduty is taht it flias to tkae itno anuocct the ctelpmoe rasrevel of all cretcarahs beewten the fsrit and the lsat. Mekas it hedrar to raed, d'nseot it? Ah wlel, the garenel cpecnot slitl wkros. As far as (mis)spelling english, it's much less phonetic than most other languages due to the fact that it's an amalgamation of german and french (with a bit borrowed from other languages). To complicate it even more, local dialects can drastically change pronunciation. If anyone's interested in a completely phonetic way of spelling, there's an interesting system called the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) which maps each speech sound to an individual character. It's interesting to see how you're actually pronouncing words, which is often radically different from your preconceptions, which are based on the words written form.
  4. There's one controversy in stem cell research I don't understand: establishing new stem cell lines from refuse tissue at fertility clinics. I can understand and respect the idea that killing a zygote destroys a human life (well, as long as the belief isn't actively forced onto others), but in the case where the cells are going to be destroyed anyway, why is it still such a moral problem? As far as I know all of the current (government funded) stem cell lines in the United States are pretty much useless, because of contamination from genetic crossover with mice DNA, so it makes sense to procure new lines, if possible, without offending anyone's moral beliefs. Does anyone have thoughts to why this particular venue (where the cells are going to be disgarded and destroyed anyway) is morally wrong?
  5. The fact that no religion is innately supperior has already been covered. I'd like to add two things. First, Christianity is not more inclusive than other religions. If anything, many of its sects are much more exclusive than liberal sects of other dominant religions (Judiasm and Islam).Second, truefusion I have to state pretty strenuously that the article you linked to is so dubious as to not really merit any consideration. As far as I know, there has never been a case of a man (xy genes) not recognizing testosterone, or indeed a woman (xx) not recognizing testosterone. That's because both men and women need testosterone to develop -- it's an essential hormone. I think what the author meant to point out when they were talking about an androgenous person was someone with XXY chromosomes, who displays secondary female characteristics but is infertile. Even if we accept the scientifically implausable supposition that such an individual could be fertile, there is no research, anywhere (according to my knowledge) that shows that two gametes in the same individual could fuse to produce a viable zygote. That's because humans and our ancestors chose sexual reproduction for more genetic diversity over asexual reproduction. Let me be specific that I'm not attacking or disputing your religious beliefs, but I do call in to question their scientific backing. If you would like to show me a credible study proving asexual reproduction in humans, with accessable test data, I might change my mind.
  6. I recommend against using GIFs for two reasons. First, it only supports a 256 color palette, which means if you want to post something like a photograph, or indeed anything outside of those 256 colors, it has to try to compensate with dithering (basically sticking some of those 256 colors together to try to simulate your color). Secondly, it's a patented format, which doesn't affect the usability that much, but does keep bearing in mind.
  7. Your story/poem seems very fervent -- which is what you were after, and I think it works. However, as a lot of rants and off-the-cuff writing goes (and this is both), any sence or sembelance of meaning is highly fragmented. I would go back, and try to clean up the thoughts a bit so they mesh into a more cohesive whole (note that I said thoughts, not sentences, as I think it's fine to leave sentence fragments). Add in a short preface, which establishes some sort of context for the piece -- it doesn't need to be written in the same charged style, but you really do need context to bring sense to the piece. Finally, go back and replace the cliche phrases (fingernails on a chalkboard leaps readily to mind) with ones which are more specific to the context, or the character.Good luck with the quasi-poem. I used to write daily, but sadly I've gotten far out of the habit of doing that.
  8. People also like it when you're straight forward with them. Since you're comfortable with talking to her over MSN, simply tell her that you're worried that when you meet in person you'll be overly shy and she won't like you. Chances are, she's probably feeling the same way (man this has happened a *lot* with me). Even if she's not shy, and you warn her that you might be in person, she'll understand and give you time time you need to open up.Good luck.
  9. While I'd tend to agree with all the people above, the viewpoint is quite a bit slanted. Evolutionarily, we become sexually mature somewhere between 9 and 19. This is for a reason. Back in the middle ages, 13 was a perfect time to be an adult, have sex, and have a family. Currently, sociatially (well, in most societies), under-age sex is frowned upon, and with good reason -- it's a big deal.I'd go with an alternate rubric to what's be previously proposed:Are you comfortable with your partner? Can you talk about sex with them frankly and specifically? Have you talked to them about what kind of protection (condoms, birth control pill, etc) you'll want to use? Have you figured out what you'd do if you or your partner (depending on who's female) got pregnant from having sex? Are you sure that both you and your partner want sex, and not just to please the other person? Have you tried other sexual things besides sexual intercourse? Are you sure that later in your life, for religious/moral/other reasons you won't regret having sex now? If your parents found out about you having sex, would their reaction be ok? Better yet, have you talked with your parents about it? They might be more supportive than you would think.Only, and I mean *only* choose to have sex if you're 100% certain that it's what you personally want. Don't worry about your partner; if they care for you they'll be willing to wait.Make sure you have someone to talk to (besides your partner) about it. People on the internet don't really count in that respect; you need someone who can give you strait-forward, intelligent and honest answers. (Other 13 year olds might not always be the best choice.)I've tried responding to you in a way that treats you like a fellow human being, capable of making your own choices. Many people (and most of our governments) choose to act like it's not your choice until you're legally of age. But in the end, it's your decision; no-one can prevent you short of locking you up. Please act responsibly and carefully, and make sure you won't later regret anything. You will have many opportunities later in life (trust me) to try sex if you decide to delay it now.I'm sorry if anyone finds my post offensive or immoral, but I felt that I had to be honest and genuine with my response.
  10. Canada, this script can be used with pretty much any webserver. Simply save it as .htaccess, and use a ftp (or scp) program to upload it to your website like you'd upload a normal image or html file. It will be effective for the directory you upload it to, and to all of its subdirectories.
  11. The problems with the child selection trick above have already been mentioned (while it's valid css, it's an unsupported feature, and thus still a hack). What Tyssen mentions in passing is really the only way I've found to properly use different css in different browsers (besides the insanity of doing a javascript check.) Internet Explorer includes code that allows its browsers to read comments which are hidden from other browsers. What's even better is you can specify which versions of IE will pay attention to the code. Furthermore, because this is a specifically supported feature, it won't go away with a new release of IE. Conditional comments won't work on any Mac versions of IE, but then again 1) the mac version of IE tends to work a lot closer to the w3 standard and 2) Mac IE is no longer supported either by Microsoft or Apple, so it should be dead shortly. A good introduction to conditional comments can be found at http://www.quirksmode.org/css/condcom.html I use it a lot in my websites to include a specific stylesheet for Internet Explorer that has fixes for my normal stylesheet. Hope this helps. Edit: Oops, I just realized that this post was a month old. I'm sorry for resurecting it, but I felt that it was important to point out conditional comments. I'm new here, so I'm not quite sure how the forum works about replying to old threads.
  12. A few more tips:1) Know your audience. Example: If the main people you're trying to get to view your site are college students, then they're going to be on at least a Cable or DSL line, so worrying about how a page will load on a 56k modem is fairly irrelivant. Same with most business users.2) Pretty much any flash content will bog your site down -- use it sparingly.3) Keep your images small. a. Most everything should be saved as a .jpg. If you have photoshop, when you save a file as a .jpg, you should be able to select the quality you want. Usually you shouldn't need over "9"; look at the preview and if you don't see any artifacts then decrease the quality until right before you do see them. Gimp (a free alternative to photoshop) has a similar option. Doing this is essential for webpage content as it will usually halve the filesize. b. If your image uses only a few colors or especially if it uses clean or simple geometric shapes, then try saving it as a .png (portable network graphic). Pngs use a very nice algorithm to decrease the filesize and unlike .jpgs they're lossless -- when you save something as a .jpg it'll degrade the image quality (sometimes imperceptably), if you save it as a .png it won't. c. Never save anything as a .bmp or a .tiff, as both are massive and inefficient. d. Only save something as a .gif if it either needs a transparent layer or it's animated.
  13. I started out learning a terrible language called calc-basic used to program TI calculators...From there I moved into doing C++ in high-school, and then system level C (writing things like a shell, a proxy, and other fun stuff) and java in college. Now I'm taking a class in SML, which is close to lisp, completely functional based, and a horrid mass of pain. I've also picked up a bit of actionscript, and the neigh useless language called Lingo, used only in Macromedia director. On the web dev. side I know html, css, javascript, and php.Not to be horribly pedantic, but why does the poll use radiobuttons? Checkboxes would allow us to select more than one language.
