  1. I was just browsing Google, when I realised that there are two Google directories.

    The More, More, More! page on Google links to https://www.google.co.uk/dirhp, but if you go to https://www.google.de/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=7Jj5VJCzLNeqhQSitYCQAw&gws_rd=ssl you get another one.

    directory.google.co.uk seems to be in the old style of Google, with the tabs at the top, as far as I can remember it used to be in the tabs with Web, Images, Groups before it was replaced by News and Froogle. Also, at the bottom of directory.google.co.uk the copyright notice reads 2004 suggesting it hasn't been updated recently.

    The newer one (https://www.google.co.uk/dirhp) fits in with the current Google layout, and has been copyrighted this year.

    Why have Google got two Directorys? Couldn't they just redirect the old directory.google.co.uk URL to the new page?

  2. I know it was quite a while ago now, but did anyone here see Google X when it went up on Google Labs a while ago?

    I've found loads of mirrors and modifications of it, and I just thought is was soo awesome it deserved its own thread.

    Someone's made a Google X Firefox start page - http://ww12.hostingproject.info/
    There's a UK Google X made by the same person - http://ww12.hostingproject.info/

    Here's an exact copy of the original Google X - http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

    And there's yet another modification (or, perhaps, an enhancement) of Google X with a better OS X "dock" animation, the ability to customise it, etc - http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

    Did anybody know why the official Google X was taken down from Google Labs? Has Google made a press release or anything?

  3. I think he means how to have a php file download another file

    I think you should use the system() command. (more info on http://php.net/)

    It works like this

    <?php

    $foo = system('wget http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ ~',$output);

    ?>

    If i'm correct (im too lazy to test it atm, it will download a file file.exe from asdf.com and give back the console messages to the variable $output.

    I hope this is what you're asking for

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    That's the one! It works brilliantly!

    Thank You!

    :P

  4. Since everyone here are geniuses and I'm a bit of a n00b, this should be easy...All i need is some PHP that will find the current logged in user's username and put it in a textbox. I need to be able to apply formatting, etc to the textbox, and the textbox will be used as part of a form.Could you help me? Please?

  5. That looks absolutely terrible. I could probably mkae it in Paint.Rubbish choice of name, rubbish logo. The console can't support older games. I've got a feeling that this new Xbox is going to be terrible.Even worse than that, my 7 year old brother has been saving up for ages, trying to buy one. I feel really sorry for him

  6. the targeted ad algorithms are a bit "big brother-ish"

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    I don't think they're "big brotherish" at all. What you forget is that all the other email providers scan your mail too, for spam and viruses. Google is doing exactly the same thing as a spam filter, except rather than sticking your message in a folder marked "spam" it makes some adverts that are relevant to it.

    Also, if you think Gmail is bad, AOL's terms of service state:

    We encourage you to tell us what your marketing preferences are for your personal data. Unless and until you "opt-out", your name and contact details may be (a) used by AOL Group Companies, such as AOL (UK) Limited, until 12 months after your AOL membership ceases, and (:P passed to selected third party suppliers of goods and services and advertisers until 6 months after you cease to be an AOL Member, for marketing goods and services to you.

    By submitting content to public areas of AOL (such as message boards and chat rooms) you represent that you have permission to do so. And in doing so, you grant AOL Group Companies a licence to use, reproduce, modify, distribute, show in public and create derivative works from that content in any form, anywhere, and waive all moral rights (namely, the right to be identified as the author, and the right to integrity, of the content) and undertake that all such moral rights have been waived in respect of the content.

    Scary, huh?

  7. Nanobots would be so cool. But what if there was a malfunction and they started attaking human cells, thinking they were threats? That wouldn't be so cool. Or they could trigger an alergic reaction or something, so your body what start attakcing the nanobots, and then the nanobots would think that your body was a threat to itself and try to kill you...okay that's a bit too much like a scci-fi film, but you get the idea...
