Is Ssi Available ? Server Side Include
gameratheart replied to ongnoai's topic in Web Hosting Support
Pawitp has a point. The error pages do use SSI. Also .htaccess, the file that deals with them, is an SSI Script (well, so far as I know, but most techies seem to think that nowadays...), so I don't see why SSI isn't allowed. -
Two Reasons: 1. I've already got SMF and won't change it anytime soon, 2. I absolutely HATE phpbb. I tried it before but felt too restricted. DogEater008, i have found the SMF Shop Mod you were talking about. It has recently been updated and now works with all versions of SMF upto 1.1, so you were wrong there. The only thing that doesn't work is the Bank Interest. There is aparrantly a fix for that, but I don't understand it. More power to you, michael!

WYSIWIG Pro HTML Editor does not support .php files. In other words? You can't do it.Oh, and the correct English Translation for Filhanteraren is "File Manager". Just thought you'd like to know that.

Two things Pawipt: 1. This is not the place to discuss which is a better browser. This kind of conversation is totally irrelivant anywhere in Xisto. 2. It's Microsoft, what do you expect? Besides, I do use Firefox - I discovered this when I was on one of my school computers. Strange how my school still insists on using IE even though the administrators know full well that Firefox is better...

Intenet Explorer Glitch causes HTTP Error 500, which is then cached to become "permanent"! In Internet Explorer (this occours in ALL versions by the way), the loading of the homepage can lag considerably if you open IE before connecting to any service. If you open up another page before the homepage loads, you'll more than likely get a "HTTP 500 Internal Server Error". Due to the way Internet Explorer deals with pages, the error would be stored in a Cache when it happens. By default, Internet Explorer uses the Cached version of any page if available to speed up page loads. This causes IE to use outdated versions of websites at times and can be easily corrected by clicking the nice "Refresh" button. However, if you got a "HTTP Error 500", because IE cached the page, you will keep getting this error whenever you visit the page, EVEN IF YOU REFRESH! This error is only corrected if you type in the URL of another page of the website, for example if you get this error when visiting blah.com you can correct it by typing blah.com/somepage and then work your way back to the glitched page. If you are unable to access your site due to an Error 500, I'd advise you tried this before asking for help, as this isusually the problem. Thanks! - The NDPA .

Hi,All this time I've been talking about problems with my forums and things I'd like to do with them, and quite a lot of the time I hear you guys saying, "It only works with IPB" or "You should get IPB" or "I think IPB would better suit your needs". And I agree. I think I should get IPB.But I have a problem. And that's this: I'm VERY short of funds. I would like to be able to run an Invision Power Board on my site but I don't think I can afford it. I mean, I can live without IPB, I'm quite happy with my current SMF forum as it is, but there are a few mods I want to install that only work with IPB.Does anyone know a low-cost solution? Can I get IPB onto my site without having to fork out a load of money? All help appreciated.Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I would prefer it if I could have an IPB 2.0 forum, but I don't really mind.

Sqlbyte, you are most wise. They should make you a mod... lol. I shall search the websites you have listed. As for the matter of Point System on Forums... no I did not intend on using a shop but thanks as I realise now that could actually help me. Currently I use SMF and I am thinking on moving to IPB, but I do not wish to host my forum with another host. I wold rather have full control over the forum. And as far as I know, putting IPB onto a site is impossible...

Do You Know Html? Just Wondering, most of you would know.
gameratheart replied to scab_dog's topic in Programming
If I didn't know better I'd say I knew all HTML. But php, JavaScript, CSS and all that... I'm still struggling with. -
You know how we have a "Hosting Credit" system on here which goes up by the quality of posts. Well, I want to do a similar, "Points System", which goes up by quality of posts. But I also want it to increase and decrease by visiting certain webpages or doing certain thiongs on the website. So I have four questions:1. How can I put a "Point" system such as this onto a website?2. How can I make it so that the points you have are visible on most pages of my website?3. (optional) Is it possible to use the point system on a forum as well as the website? Also, can I use the point system to make changes to points based on quality of posts?4. Is it possible to change the points at random? If so:a. How?b. (optional but strongly requested) Can it actually say when the points have been randomly changed?I know it's a lot of questions, and many of them may not be answerable, but I would really appreciate any help. Also, if you can't think of answers for the questions marked (optional) (3 and 4b), don't worry about it.

I notice someone changed the title of this topic. Which mod did that I wonder? But the new title is much cooler than the one I came up with. And I appreciate all your quality posts. What I would like though, is for all of you to give a rating for your webhosts, at a scale of minus infinity up to 10. That's what I did.And boyCradle, you don't know how right you are!

The title and description of this topic should tell you my basic question, but it's never enough detail just to read a question, so I will explain my intention.Basically, on my website I have a php script for users to register to my site. I then use this data to create forum accounts (I do not use the main forum Registration form because I cannot change it's contents and there are some questions I'd like to ask before registration). Later I also plan to make hidden areas that you need to register for to enter.Anyway, I wondered if it was possible to make a login page where you could choose to be logged in to the site or to our SMF forums, and if you chose the forums, you would instantly get logged in to the forums without having to type your data again. Do you know any way to do this?

Run Your Own Mail / Radio Server SHOUTcast and more
gameratheart replied to Compute's topic in General Discussion
Oh man I have wanted to startup my own mail server for AGES! I am definately going to look at this guide, as I didn't know there WERE programs out there that could help you do it. Thanks a lot Compute! -
Hey all, I've been wanting to post this topic for absolutely ages but you apparently have to be hosted to post here... which I only get two days ago. This topic basically tells you the exact reason I came to Xisto, by talking about my two previous hosts and why I left them. I would advise that if you're with these hosts then LEAVE THEM NOW! Unless you want your sites to be totally unpopular like mine... Ok, one day I came up with this radical idea after playing a game on the internet and listening to the comments people were giving. A lot of people where saying negative comments, mainly about lack of choice or underuse of characters. I won't go in to all the detail but basically I came up with this idea for a cool website. After making a basic framework on the computer I showed my ideas to some friends. Realising the sites' potential I decided to start putting it on the web. Host 1: Wanadoo FTP My Site. My score: 5/10 (average) I wanted to get the site up as soon as I could but I didn't want to have to pay more than I could afford. I have an Internet connection with Wanadoo and after exploring their site I thought I'd found the answer. Unfortunately I thought wrong. Wanadoo FTP My Site is an FTP Webhost that is free for all Wanadoo customers. It gives a fair deal of space (30MB per site, max 150MB) and also supports downloads, unlimited subdomains and uploads of other webpages and zip files. However, i found later that there were two big problems. The first was the site URL: although my site was popular at the start, not many people could find it and even fewer people wanted to have to type in a stupidly long adress such as: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ The second thing was that it was to restricted. You could only use files that are HTML- or Zip- Related, pictures, or files that can be downloaded. So you could use files with .txt, .exe, .zip, .htm or .html extensions, and pictures, but you couldn't use ones like .php, .phtml, .htacess, etc. This proved to be too restrictive, as I couldn't change my sites actual layout or add things like forums. And since I didn't want to use other hosts like "Free Forum hosting" websites, I decided to look elsewhere. I still kept my site on WFMS for a short while, though, just in case I didn't find what I was looking for. Host 2: cjb.net My score: <0/10 (Below 0, ie. BAD!) At first I was really just looking for a way to shorten the URL of the site I already had with the aforementioned host. But I was recommended to the site by a friend (whoever that was ). They did free web hosting and also the URL Masking I was looking for. I tried using their hosting first, but when I found out that they didn't support subdomains, I was immediately bummed. All my images where kept in an "images" subdomain and I wasn't going to put those on the main site. What is more, if I remember correctly they limited you to 50 pages on the website. Useless! Immediately I removed my site with them. Remebering about the URL masking they offered though, I decide to change the URL of my old site to a .cjb.net one. In return they put a small (roughly half a centimetre) ad ticker on the top of each page. As it was small and not that noticable, I ignored it. But then they - without any notice - started using pop-up advertising. (Most of it was pop-under, but still...) This annoyed so many members that when I finally realised what they had done, I had lost them all. I was like, "this blows", and I deleted all the emails I have from them. I mean, who'd pay Ł5. A MONTH just to get the ads to stop!?! I now wait for the account to expire so I don't have to use them again. After these episodes, I decide to do a thourough search of the web for some decent free web hosting that satisfied my needs and was simple enough to use. And I am glad to say, I found it. Here I am, at Xisto, the only web host that has not only fulfilled my needs, it has done so much more. If I gave you guys a rating, it would have to be >10/10 (More than 10/10), or to put it simply, THE BEST *darn* SERVICE EVER TO EXIST ON THE WEB! I rarely give out 10/10s, but this service, and the people who run it, deserve much more than 10/10. I love this service and I don't think I'll ever leave it. Thank you for running such an excellent service. If I was your boss I'd give you all double promotions. Feel free to quote me on this post, and Cheers Xisto!

Viruses are made by people who's prime intent is to destroy other people's work or use it for their own personal gain. These people don't have a care in the world - even if they DO get on the news or attract major police attention - and as we've seen here, they will do anything to satisfy their greed. But it is astonishing to see the level of extremes that have been reached! I mean, faking to be an FBI agent and sending a virus... that is a whole new extreme and a whole new low! Whoever you are, I hope you get caught and sentenced to death! (you may delete the underlined bit if necessary, I'm not asking for trouble)

Update 3: Phpbb does work perfectly. For some reason it seems to crash if you leave the site after admin'ing it for the first time, if you do not add any forums/topics/posts. SMF is not working at all - I have done some more research and have found that the reason for this is that Fantastico does not setup your admin account correctly. As this is the account that controls the board, this causes the board to crash. You will need to put SMF on another way (anyone else know a way???)The PhpChat only works if you do not define an admin account when you add it. In this case, your account name and pass will become admin. There doesn't appear to be anywhere you can admin it though, so this is rather pointless.
-
Update 2: phpMyChat is working after all. It seems the script will not properly install if an admin account is defined in the installation. Leaving these fields blank made it work.SMF definately does not work however. I have tried Phpbb again and this time it appears to work perfectly, but I will try to find out for certain.

Hey guys, I am not entirely sure if you can help me here, seeing as how the forum software is not your own, but I have a problem with my site. Fantastico will not properly install any of the forum software. To clarify: I have used Fantastico to install SMF and PHPbb2 on my site, but neither have worked properly. After installing SMF, when I visited the site, I got this message: I have tried this three times and all three times it has given the same message. I then tried phpBB, and it worked fine for a while but after logging off and leaving the forums, I came back to them and got this message: What's wrong? Why aren't my forums working? Please help, this is majorly frustrating me.
