Use a cron job to do it. Create a PHP script which does the checking and use the PHP cli from a cron job to execute it. If you don't have access to a PHP cli executable, you can do the same thing with perl, and I can't imagine a web host that doesn't have perl installed on it (unless its *BLEEP* windows).

Why don't you just install oracle on your development machine? That's what I do for my oracle development at work. You can download 10gR2 from their site and install it in a non-production environment completely free.

You need to delete the hiberfil.sys. Use unlocker or some other program that can close handles on processes while they're running. Delete the file, restart, then enable hibernation.

Isn't there something in this site's TOS about posting referral links to other sites?

I used to love doing these little mathematical parlor tricks and head games when I was in grade school...the teachers would try to "amaze" us with math...it was kinda pathetic, since the teachers who were doing them were just reading them out of a book, and had no idea how they worked.

Pomegranate Digital Painting for a workshop
ethergeek replied to Vyoma's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
Done with open-source software too...very nice. Goes to show you don't need to buy a 1000$+ software package to get pretty impressive things done.*gives Adobe the finger* -
Reserving A Drive Letter For An External Enclosure
ethergeek replied to dserban's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I've never had a problem with this. Just go into the disk management mmc snap-in and manually assign drive letters to logical disks. I set my ipod up as drive I: and windows xp seems to reserve this letter for my ipod; I've never seen anything mount on drive I: besides my ipod. -
Global Warming - Global Catastrophe Global Warming
ethergeek replied to jeremycollins's topic in Science and Technology
I'm not convinced that global warming is a real threat...the evidence that the theory is based on is derived from models of dubious accuracy. There is just as much evidence to support that our planet goes through "hot cycles" and that the warming is a natural phenomenon as there is to support the global warming as a result of human intervention theory. The fact is, we don't have evidence that goes far enough back to show that humans are causing the gradual increase in the temperature on this planet. -
Taming The Tornado! Taking the Twist out of a Twister
ethergeek replied to jeremycollins's topic in Science and Technology
It makes logical sense. A tornado is caused when you have warm air currents and cold air currents spinning around in a funnel. If you heat the cold air with microwave energy (thus making it hot air, provided the humidity is above zero percent) you cause this cycle to terminate. The only real logistics problem with this is how much energy it would actually take, and how to power the massive magnetron required to generate said energy. Other than that, good concept, probably rockier execution. -
Careful with this...the top fan should NOT be a high CFM fan if it's right behind the power supply, otherwise you create a vacuum at the power supply's intake and it doesn't cool properly. This only applies to power supplies where there is a fan in the back and the front of it; for flow-through cooling. If you *must* use a high-cfm fan there, add a baffle (a tube will suffice) to drop the intake of the top fan below the intake of the power supply.

Interesting idea...advanced organ donation.

This is why I use spamgourmet...I don't care if the address listed here is harvested, since only the Xisto.com domain can email me at that address

Can We Get More Than One IP On A PC With Dial-Up

LOL, wow...that will teach me to look at dates more carefully. This site needs a feature to automatically lock topics after a few months of inactivity I think... -
Can We Get More Than One IP On A PC With Dial-Up
ethergeek replied to saggi's topic in Computer Networks
I'd also like to know why you would want multiple IP addresses on a dial-up connection. Every time you dial in you'll usually get a different IP address anyway, so if you need to change it for some reason (i.e., getting blocked from something based on your ip address) just terminate the connection and restart it.You could always install 2 modems, 2 phone lines, and dial in to your ISP with both at the same time, then multipath the connection (or whatever the hell windows calls it). Your ISP may not like this, however...fortunately if your ISP is your phone company, and they figure out what you're doing, they tend to look the other way on it, especially if a faster internet option is not available in your area from your telco. I wouldn't try this with any ISP except your telco, since anyone else won't know that both of the numbers using the connection belong to the same customer.Just an idea. -
Don't forget about code obfuscation! Because obfuscation tends to replace with smaller variable names that make no sense, it can also have a dramatic effect upon the size of your final script. I don't know of any for javascript (google to the rescue here) but I use retroguard (for java) and dotfuscator (for .net) and it trims my binaries quite nicely.

Get truecrypt. Free, open-source, encrypted disks. You can even choose your crypto algorithm and hashing algorithm. Severa; FIPS-140 algorithms included.

You can get a free domain from NamePros...all you really have to do is post on their forums. It's really about 2 hours of work in the NP$ Incentives forum (there's a guy in there right now offering to give ya 50 NP$ for just posting a comment on his blog) to get enough credits to register a domain thru them. They're an eNom authorized reseller, so the domain is actually in your name -- it belongs to you, so you can transfer it out wherever you want. I got several of my domains through them, it's really easy. Check it out when ya have time...it's really quite cool; it's also an excellent resource for web developers.

Receive And Send Mails From Your Desktop
ethergeek replied to iGuest's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Why not just get a gmail account? I have plenty of invites, just PM me if you want one. GMail supports pop3/smtp, 20 mb attachments and 2GB+ storage. Plus ya get all other kinds of goodies thru google accounts, like calendar, browser sync, reader...the list goes on and on. -
Haha...true...it was obvious...I just tend to regard any attempt to hide a "catch" as couching it in fine print. I bet this is the same guy I saw on namepros a few days ago asking where he could buy a redirect script :/

Never Give Out Your Password! For real
ethergeek replied to Nintendo's topic in Security issues & Exploits
I'm with ya on this one...but for a different reason. I don't like the way the password storage works...so I use keepass. It's free, open-source, runs on everything imaginable, and encrypts your database with 256 bit symmetric AES crypto. The firefox password storage is pretty safe on a data level with regard to encryption, but getting passwords out of an already authenticated session is just a little too easy for me to regard it as "secure". That and the firefox password storage doesn't always understand that there is a password to be remembered. -
LOL...reading the fine print on the site...basically unless you have a site with a PR 2 or better, you have to force your visitors to deal with a pop-up advertisement. Really, there's no need to try to hide the desire for a backlink to boost your own PR with such altruistic jibber-jabber as "because some people might redirect to sites they don't own" either. Just be straight with your potential customers. I'm gonna go ahead and call "shenanigans" on this one.

I'm Looking For A Free Virus Scanner spyware and virus protector
ethergeek replied to marmaduke29's topic in Software
I wouldn't run it from a CD...it prevents you from updating the virus definitions and leaves you with just the heuristic scanning engine. -
LOL...can anyone say "licensed contractor"?

ethergeek replied to marmaduke29's topic in Software
AVG and clamwin are what I recommend. AVG is great if you install it, clamwin is better if you want to run it from a usb key to scan systems before you use them in places like libraries, etc. You probably won't have access to fix the infection, but it can tip you off to pick a different machine. -
I always wanted a treehouse when I was a little kid...problem was I lived in So. Cal, and there weren't tall enough or dense enough trees at my disposal to do it.
