Rhel - Red Hat Enterprise Linux Is it any good?
ethergeek replied to .:Brian:.'s topic in Websites and Web Designing
RedHat didn't go downhill...they still make (and support, key word there) a very stable linux distribution. RHEL's primary focus right now is supporting enterprises who want to run linux instead of windows and have server machines that are certified to meet certain requirements like LSB and SELINUX. Even with the outrageous support contracts running into the many thousands of dollars offered by redhat, the TCO is STILL lower than running windows.Fedora isn't really the "free version" or RHEL...if you want something really similar to RHEL without the huge cost, check out CentOS. -
I like the idea of fiber-only connections some day...one wire, many wavelengths, blazing fast.

Why don't you just use grub and chainload the vista boot loader from there? It seems alot easier given how well documented the grub configuration is. -
I have a reclining office chair and wireless peripherals...I never have any time where I'm uncomfortable...just change positions often and you won't get repetitive strain injuries.

I wrote a review of Comodo Personal Firewall on my blog awhile back...here's the link: http://www.hugedomains.com/domain_profile.cfm?d=ethergeek&e=com

I'd go with Ubuntu. RHEL is designed around the demands of businesses running mission critical servers, since the non-security updates are few and far between, and the platform has paid support. For a personal machine, Ubuntu will offer much easier access to the latest applications, as well as newer drivers for things like video cards, sound cards, usb peripherals, etc. -
You're better off going with ATI at this point...they're much more open with their drivers now, so there will be excellent linux ATI drivers and people will be able to create custom windows drivers as well.

My jaw clicks all the time, probably TMJ or something...but I just got used to it and now I gross people out with the sounds I can make with it

Yeah...that's what I'm thinking. Just use ACLs to prevent children's accounts from writing to the drive, or add an explicit deny to their account and let it recurse on any drive you don't want them looking at. It will give them this nice access denied message to, so they understand that it's not their computer to hose ^^

If you don't know what something is, google it. There's legit reasons for hiding files from the API...some being to hide emulation software like Daemon Tools from the retarded protection schemes on game and software CDs, to hiding important antivirus engine files from potential attack from viruses. So just because it says "hidden from windows api" doesn't necessarily mean it's bad.

The title casing made that painful to read, lol. The Halo 3 beta is downloaded via XBL marketplace, so no, you don't need to have a modchip to play it. You can download all sorts of free demos and whatnot from the XBL marketplace, like Beautiful Katamari, which, in my opinion, is a much more addictive game than Halo 3 will be

On that note...any idea why my Kubuntu Edgy system will randomly replace my xorg.conf with one generated by dpkg-reconfigure??? It's driven me so far up a ****ing wall that I have a script in my /etc/init.d/local that diff's my xorg against a backup in my home directory and copies it over before I even log in.It's really frustrating...

I'm not gonna preorder it...I want to play a demo of it first, and like all 360 games, it will have a demo soon enough that I can experiment with.

Yeah, I can't imagine why I'd want to integrate BT into opera...unless the pocket pc version of opera has it...

Menu Bar In Task Monitor Missing
ethergeek replied to unimatrix's topic in Websites and Web Designing
That was entirely non-sensical. Windows uses dynamic mapping to resolve library dependencies and only clears open dll's from memory when they are no longer in use by any application. -
You want to use remote assistance, not remote desktop. Just get the 2 of you onto msn messenger and have your friend send you a remote assistance invitation...he'll be able to see what you're doing and interact with it.

Another Howtoforge.com - The Linux Vault

Didn't there used to be something like this awhile back? Linux Documentation Project or something like that? I vaguely remember it but not as of recently.Linux support is easier from the vendor's community areas (like the forums on the various distribution's sites) and on IRC. It's hard to beat live support like that. -
How could you hate linux ?.? Anyway, there are alot of text browsers for Windows...most are targeted at users who are blind, which speak the contents of the page.

My Summary Of Vista Bugs User summary
ethergeek replied to Ronel's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Did anyone see the news on engadget over the weekend that a bunch of Swedes can't get online with Vista? Apparently, the Swedish ISP's infrastructure is running on Linux and some protocol-incompliant piece of Vista's network stack can't seem to talk to it properly. -
Intro A Excellent Free Rpg Style Online Game
ethergeek replied to kingng625's topic in Computer Gaming
Exactly You really do get what you pay for with this game...great graphics. (mostly) intelligent player base, frequent updates, servers that are almost never down, rich storylines, and a TON of things to do in-game. As for Final Fantasy 11 being primarily Japanese players, this has never been a problem for me (even without speaking Japanese to them, which is sometimes just easier than the auto-translate in the game) in parties. There are some continental lag issues (due to the servers being located in Japan) where sometimes Japanese players can spot mobs and camp more effectively than American players, but the reports of this happening are usually blown way out of proportion by some child who got pissed that he wasn't paying attention and someone else claimed the mob he was camping for a whopping *gasp* 20 minutes. -

I really think all free MMO's are doomed to failure. There's just no revenue stream to support the server upkeep and bandwidth cost, or development on the game.If you want a fun MMO that will last long enough so you don't feel like you've wasted your time on it, play final fantasy 11 -
Bioshock Review Oh glory of glories :)
ethergeek replied to Herbert1405241469's topic in Computer Gaming
We'll see about that when Halo 3 comes out. I'd say that right now, bioshock is one of the most realistic-feeling, entertaining games on the 360 right now...it has the feel to it that doom 3 did...you feel like you're there.
