Perl Vs Php Whats in your website?... and why?
ruben1405241511 replied to rantsh's topic in Programming
I use PHP because I do not know Perl and I'm scared of the cgi-bin folder ^^ I haven't reached the borders of PHP yet, so I don't see a reason to learn Perl. I think PHP is a very easy to understand language and the best thing is that you can learn while you write. I just write and when I come across a function I need I look it up on php.net (usually they have the name I imagine) and then I can use it. If there is a usage problem I will usually find it in the comments (and additionally some handy scripts that are ready-to-use.)I think PHP is the way of the most, because it is just damn popular, you rather get PHP than Perl on a freehost and it's easier to learn. -

Why I Like Apple Less And Less.
ruben1405241511 replied to qwijibow's topic in Websites and Web Designing
lol @ spawn of satan - intelI don't like the idea of Apple cooperating with these bastards either, but several people with knowledge agree that it will make everything better.I especially hope that porting programs/games will be easier because of this switch, that would really make me happy. Or at least you can have a Win and a Mac partition on one nice Mac-Computer. Even though I would hate wasting that space on Windows, I can say that I would do it, for the games and maybe testing websites, etc. too.I actually think, that it is better like that, because I think an Operating System should be what the name says: The system, that operates. Disregard the machine.@xboxrulz: I understand that objection, but except you until now EVERYBODY said that Intel just makes the better and more effective processors. I know that windows machines sound like airplanes taking off and that Macs are white doves sailing in comparison, but don't you agree that Apple will probably/hopefully find a way to keep these beloved properties? -
What Version Of Macos Do You Use?
ruben1405241511 replied to Jguy101's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I had OS 9.2.2 on my iMac G3 for years, the upgrading installation was no problem. There is even a way to get OS X on a iMac G3, but it is difficult, because the system comes on DVDs and the old iMac don't have DVD. But you can exchange DVDs for CDs and that it's easy. There is a website on it, if you want it, I find it for you (try Google for "OS X on iMac"). -
Resetting Mac Os Passwords?
ruben1405241511 replied to WeaponX's topic in Websites and Web Designing
In OS X you do it by booting from system CD right? Did you try doing the same on Mac OS 9? Maybe you can use the System on CD and then the utilites to reset them.. Don't know. If not, then you can still format from system CD.You boot from CD by holding "c" on startup. -
Capital Punishment Please vote and reply
ruben1405241511 replied to KonVicKt's topic in Science and Technology
Killing people for no use is wrong.1. Oh, lifetime imprisonment doesn't scare people? Don't go from your view, man! You are scared by death, but some people kill others, they don't even know, who never harmed anyone. Do you think these people think the same way as you do? If you think so, then I'm scared of you.I don't think that serial killers would make the rational decision to kill a few, just for the sake that they won't get fried in the end.2. Lifetime prisoners neither. Oh, they can escape, right? In what kind of country do you live, where this happens regularly?3. Your organ transplant (only use you mentioned) argument doesn't work in most cases. If they get fried or poisoned you can't use the organs. The way you mentioned (bullet in the head) is practiced in China as far as I know. They liked your idea, man they do that. I don't agree that we should learn from a country that is not even democratic. Also, the dying person can (current law) decide if he/she wants to share his organs. Ted Bundy and other sick thinking beings probably would not have agreed (by the way not only strange serial killers don't want to share their organs).I should add, that I have the slight shade of an idea, that serial killers don't live healthy.. might come with the lifestyle, you know, short but hard...And on the other hand, even if they have a foot in the grave, I do not believe that many people would like to have the body parts of a killer in them.4. What if they convict the wrong guy, because they need to shut him up?DNA and other unique identification cannot help you against corrupt cops/governers etc. Often a murderer cannot be convicted because of unique reasons. I would even say in most cases. We don't have the machine yet, that can tell you "Yes, that guy did it". The DNA on the victim's body might be there for other reasons.5. I think the Eye for Eye thingy is from the Old Testament, Jesus preached forgiving others. I don't care much about religion, but I respect life. Death penalty is old-fashioned. We can do better.6. Makes no sense at all to me.7. Why do you call it Capital Punishment? It's an euphemism for death, killing and crime. Are you afraid of the word death penalty? -
Bnbrown's Questions: Html, Css, Jsc, Ftp Etc.
ruben1405241511 replied to bnbrown's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
I'm not really sure about it, but I see quite some posts with under 25 words round here, also in older posts, so maybe it is more a "mental mark", so that they are not really deleted always. I don't think that one has to use a word count. Just think about the following fact, when writing:– If you ask: Is the question clear? Did you supply all necessary info to get help? Would it help if you clarified your skill level?- If you reask: Have I tried my best solving the problem already? Did I understand the answer? Was there a request for more info? Do I have an idea why it still doesn't work?- If you answer: Is my answer understandable? Does the person have the necessary skill and technical possibility to use my answer? Is my answer taken "as is" useful for people who search the forum later? This helps making this a good support forum, where questions aren't dumped in a ton of spam and real answers are not lost on Page 7. This way the threads don't get cluttered up and finding answers is easier. -
Freeipod.com: Has Anyone Ever Got One?
ruben1405241511 replied to organicbmx's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I just brought myself to look at it and what do I get? The freeipods.com redirects to ipods.freebay.com which redirects back and so it goes on until I get a browser timeout. Is it always like that? -
The First :-) Ever Thread Where It Was Invented.
ruben1405241511 replied to darkranger's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Aargh just wrote that post and accidentally closed the tab. Annoying :-(I think it has become more difficult to establish new words and colloquialisms (on the internet at least).I guess you all know that story about the Dublin theater propretier, who made a bet that a new nonsense word could be made up in 48 hours and that the public would give it a meaning. The story originates in the 18th century but probably it is nonsense itself, there is no evidence to support the theory. Actually they say it came from inquisitive. Anyway, even it is nonsense, today it is even harder.Product advertisers are trying to fill our brains with new names everyday and the colloquialisms.. who hasn't tried to make one up, eh? Well I tried at least, a German equivalent for lol, because it was just as plain stupid.I think to make up a successful colloquialism it ought to be something that you can say too (you can't pronounce ml in one syllable. I personally hate people who say lol in RL (real life) but well, this is one of the best examples. ), the keys should be near to each other on the keyboard (typing time for lol: No time and well it should be for something you want to say often. As you can see among different groups, different colloquialisms appear (ReadThe****ingManual will not be found in a standard chat conversation, but on a lot of support forums). And it should not mean something else in English (and probably French, Spanish and German). As for new words, how about iPod or Hoover (In Germany 'Tempo' for handkerchiefs).. these have found their way into everyday language so they are used for even more stuff than they actually meant. Examples of good advertising + remarkable product names. It is also really hard to find a unique name for a product nowadays, if you want to include some of the orginal meaning. For a bad example see my signature and search the word in Google ^^ It was like the first thing that came to my mind (of course, but now I feel ashamed for it, because it is so Schwarzenegger-inspirated). Now I got the logo with the V already and I'll probably stick to it.Hehe I spend to much time thinking about language issues... -
Multibyte-string Functions since server shift
ruben1405241511 replied to ruben1405241511's topic in Web Hosting Support
Sorry for doubleposting, but the issue is resolved now, after I mailed support ät Xisto.kom and they recompiled the server, so no worries any longer. -
Hej Franklin, welcome here! CGI is possible as you may have found out. What did you mean by "telling your pincode"? So you're website is going to be some kind of freakshow or what?regards, ruben

I prefer the new name too, the old one suggested the completely wrong thing. Especially because they do not really make it possible/easy for you to the print the books. To be honest, I can't use it the way I would like to (browsing, reading), but I didn't spend much time trying to figure that out. Just think that it a non-intuitive tool is unusual for Google..

Hi jipman, congrats that you can be shot by some Fed every second because you once surfed confident websites :-)Yes, I would really like to be able to leave my house with the door open (and considering my current financial situation I could do so :-/ ), but of course this would be naïve and not to be recommended. There is a difference though, because there I would have to fear every jerk that walks by. But now we're talking governmental issues, which means that my Chancellor can see what I'm writing in my emails or not. That other people are able to do this, if I don't protect myself well, is clear, but then it would be illegal (and the services I use try to protect me from it).I don't know if this is the common way to feel inconfident about the government (I can't judge a country where people vote for dead fascists :-/ ) in the Netherlands, but even though I do not agree with the German government in many points, I think that the way to go, is the politicial one: fighting for my privacy if they try to take it. But not by using technology but by using the right of free speech. The good thing about the government being no fail-safe machines is that you can talk to them and that YOU can be the government yourself (or at least a minor part voting for the one you want). If you feel that a tax on mp3-players is wrong (I don't think so, they are luxury goods and putting tax on them probably doesn't make poor people poorer), then speak up against it. In a country where everyone just lives his way and if law interferes he bypasses it, you don't have to wonder, if the Feds shoot you in your own home. Use your rights as a citizien or you might lose them. Frustration isn't helping nobody.Sorry for the big topic drift, if you guys still want to talk about Google's coherence we might open a new thread in Science Talk or something.

ah alright, nice to know.. but I guess creating your thumbnails yourself and not automatically is the better way, right? it's mostly for people like designers who have a lot of pictures? is it difficult to learn?

Hehe, good one, clagnol ;)By the way what in Gd's name is Gd? I never heard from it (neither from God if it was really a spelling mistake).

Google Analytics: Web Traffic Analyzer
ruben1405241511 replied to vdhieu84's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I can't make a use of it, since I don't use adwords and I don't have a high viewer number, but they offer you a service to optimise your keywords in your website (for adwords and other progs)? -
Hi all,Well, the problem I saw with your site, is that the menu is much bigger than it needs to be for its small content. This way, when one takes a small window for your site, a giant nav frame covers the content, which is not appropriate for the content.Using percent might make the problem a little bit smaller, but in general I agree with guy saying that frames shouldn't be used, since they are deprecated by the W3C and bad for many people's view. You can easily implement the permanent parts with serverside includes or PHP, we can show you if you want to.good luck,RubenPS.: I don't know why you would need to post the source code for your frameset, because everyone can see it on your site.

Hello,I use multibyte functions to split a string by letter and I was wondering if you could turn them on again, because they were on before the server shift (and they are in PHP by default) and now I get fatal errors, when trying to use them. In the Phpinfo they don't appear at all.. I've been waiting for quite some time now and it is only a basic PHP-integrated feature..Thanks,Ruben

I use an iBook 14 inch.60 GB HD, 1.something ghz and terribly convenient to use ;)When I'm back in Germany I'll invest in a second monitor because this makes working with layout/web projects much more convenient.

Hi all, just yesterday I was interviewed for a statistical program (chat-interview, about an hour, I applied for it). The interviewer asked me about a new web feature and if I would like it: it was a little something which ought to save your personal information and make it accessible to the services you want to access. I kind of liked the idea (no more writing down your personal stuff, ged rid of routine, decide who knows what, protect your emailadress from crawlers) and I also said that I would sacrifice some privacy for the convenience. This also occurs to what jipman is talking about:I use a convenient service, which offers me a lot of possibilities, but all my information is linked together (makes it easier for me to be tracked down, if I'm involved in illegal activites. not only terrorism...)But shouldn't the focus here be on the law? I mean instead of using ten anonymous remailers, going into internet over a proxy and whatever paranoid people and terrorists do, you could try to get a right for privacy. In Germany we have something like this, I don't know the exact conditions but not everyone can be monitored by the BND (BundesNachrichtenDienst, secret service) if he wasn't involved in crimes or something (I guess they spent some thinking on this). So as a German citizien I do not feel as if I had to protect my privacy, because they can not take it that easily. If you are living in a country where you do not have privacy as a spotless person, then you are living under the wrong law! When you have to be worried because the Feds (they monitor Netherland citiziens too? they have a big budget and catch few if this the case ) know where you are going and who your friends are? Sorry, but then you are probably involved in illegal activites or paranoid. The only thing I would be worried about is the Email, this is really personal, but I sure hope, that no one reads me emails without me knowing. If that is the case again: wrong law!I don't want to have to protect my privacy by technical means, it should (and is here) be covered by the law.So the punchline is: If you live in china, don't execute google-services, you might get executed yourself Might apply to other privacy-unfriendly countries too (jipman mentioned the USA).----------Opensource software:Well I use Firefox, Adium X and Azureus and aMule (maybe some other apps that I'm not sure about and I don't use often) as a normal user. But I wouldn't say the trend goes to open soure. There ARE some terribly good apps out there like Firefox, that just go without concurrence, but I still think other apps are more popular and unlikely to be beaten.A lot of the cases, where people (I ^^) use open source software, is filesharing. Because by a minor change of law, an app might become obsolete/forbidden (and the responsibles busted), no one (of the good companies) considers making a filesharing app anymore.Another field of use is where opensource is used, is the internet, probably because it is developing so fast :Pdamn huge post ^^ but I think a lot about these issues.Ruben

Battle Of Music Players: iPod vs. Creative
ruben1405241511 replied to altsr's topic in Hardware Workshop
Creative Drivers don't support Macs (as far as I could find out, trying to connect an Creative Zen). I'm not sure about Linux, at least not natively.iPods do.. and honestly fellows, most people want the headphones, not the iPod, because they show the style/riches/attitude. It is like the golden chains for the ghetto or the car for the average 45 yr. old Kraut. First impression. status symbol. -
Well, I guess I made my point pretty clear already: Subtract the time the one took to register from his already gathered hosting credits. If someone accumulates 400 in a month, afterwards he would still have 340 (30 for hosting, 30 for the month). I would consider this guy a valuable active member because he posts a lot (hopefully good), so why would he be charged more than the valuable active member who accumulates 30 credits, applies, and then accumulates 370 credits in a month? This is not fair and it is not too difficult to change it. I agree, that this problem only applies to unexperienced new members who accidentally jumped over this rule while reading, but where's the point in punishing them?Btw. if the migration is complete, I'd like to complain now... ^^ My website cannot access my database, it says "panda.unixbsd.info" is not allowed to access, even though I added this and even a wildcard ("%") to my access hosts.

ruben1405241511 replied to bnbrown's topic in Graphics, Design & Animation
Doublepostings are deprecated, except if they contain new info (then you are supposed to edit your old post, search the forum for that). I do not believe that impatience counts as new info but no worries, I guess it should be ok. It also says in the rules that posts under 25 words will be deleted by the maintenance system because they are counted as irrelevant.
