  1. Time is not the only important thing.I must confess that I would like to see if my Unix AIX professional experience makes me able to help a guy having Linux environment variables problems, in a fild where I know almost nothing ! If it could happen to be really helpful, this would be really grat !
  2. I'm using the standard desktop, CDE. I only use the desktop for starting something on my PC.And, of course, all my old MS-DOS games don't play on my new XXdows computers, so I have to boot on a floppy disk.
  3. What is The HURL ? are you talking about "HURL: The Hypertext Usenet Reader & Linker" ?
  4. OK, let's talk a little bit about philosophy.the "set" command shows all the variable which value is set to something. It's only a display, nothing dangerous.Simply, the usual philosophy with Unix is that, if a variable (let's say DISPLAY or TERM) has a value (like TERM=vt220 or TERM=aixterm), then this value is used.If this variable has no value, then the default values for the system are used. So, suppose that in KDE you have something like "USER_SETTINGS"=/var/homeand has another value in the other environment, the results will be different. So, look in your two settings listing which is the difference, and try putting in your fluxbox environment what you had in your KDE environment. One non-destructive way could be to create (using vi for instance) a script named "mysettings.sh", and activate it by typing ". ./mysettings.sh".Unfortunately I am not famliar, neither with fluxbox nor with kmix. But what I am telling you is quite standard Unix things, occuring so often that it's probably the reason of your problem.By the way, isn't kmix the mixer coming with kde ?
  5. when you log in with fluxbox, do you use the same login as when you login with KDE ?If yes, then there a no permission problems. So, you have to look at the exported settings. When logged using fluxbox, open a unix shell window, type "set |sort", put in /tmp/file1.txtwhen logged with DKE, open a shell window, type "set |sort" again, and put it in /tmp/file2.txtThen look at both files to see if there is a difference, explaining the defferent behave of kmix.
  6. yes, that's exactly what I meant. The Red Hat Enterprise versions are rather expensive, so for testing purposes I would like to try with Fedora. But, for "quick-and-dirty" tests, the bootdisk should be able to boot, create partitions and write down the booting area, so that the system reboots without more complicated things. And, on the Power5 processors, you can create a system with only 0.2 cpu power, which means that creating a testing machine is easy. Next step of course : testing Oracle for PowerPC on Linux for PowerPC.
  7. Befor re-installing Nero, I would suggest make a test : create a bootable CD using a bootable ms-dos floppy disk, and check that this CD under dos.
  8. Lot of people don't like IE, they prefer firefox or Netscape.Unfortunately, a lot of sites don't like it. I have several sites performing security checks, rejecting my passwords if I connect with Netscape or firefox, accepting them if I use Crosoft Internet Explorer.
  9. @xboxrulz : he cannot create a bootable CD, so he will probably not be able to boot from the UBCD...
  10. Hey, Man, your site is quite impressive ! I like it! I just wanted to precise something about tutorials. This is of course only my own opinion, but I think a lot of people will think like me. concerning the copyright things, what you want to do is quite forbidden. If I have something interesting on my site, you cannot create a pdf file with it and let people download it. The only way to do this would be to ask me the question, and to write on top of your pdf file "This document is from yordan's web site, exhibited here with yordan's permission, and cannot be reproduced without author's permission. Remember, some persons earn they money selling their knowledge, so you are not allowed giving for fee what they want to be paid for. By the way, personnally, on my site you will find nothing interesting. But everything I said, here on this forum and anywhere else, cannot be reproduced except if you mention "this clever thing has been explained by Yordan".
  11. @neilski : who is the poor guy you are talking about ?I must update my previous post : now my php + mysql works fine, I can startup feeding my database.By the way, concerning learning Xisto how-to, is it possible to create my private forum (for my parents only) hosted on my Xisto account ?
  12. What is ubuntu ? is it a free linux ?If tye CD does not boot on your system, that probably means that your hardware is not known from the linux on the CD. Then, have a look at the ubuntu web site and look if there is a boot floppy disk. However, the fact that you cannot read the CD from Windows seems to indicate that your burner is not able to burn any cd, just test that with some other files.I usually use Mandrake, and when I break the Lilo booting part, I simply boot on the Mandrake CD and it automatically starts the Lilo reinstall program and everything works fine again.
  13. Do you use Cypherix ? Are you satisfied with it ? Can you tell us a little bit more than what the tile looks like (hide files and folders) ? Nevertheless, this seems to be exactly the subject of the present topic...
  14. @technocian, your signature image "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/;'>http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/; is not readable with my Internet Explorer, maybe you should check that. Notice from Klass: Hi, I decided to post off topic and Klass gave me this Note. Next time I want to post something for just one person I will PM them. Hope I do not go Off Topic like this again or I will get Warned.
  15. thanks a lot.I heard that they have a version for Power5, I would like to know if it works in a sub-partition.
  16. I would also suggest Mc Afee freescan Freescan is online, immediate, and will give you the name and location of the infected file, and the virus name. You should also download their trial version, which will protect you during one month.
  17. er... your e-mail "promote" seems rather strange. Are you sure ? @Himanshu : "3. The space is increasing though I have never used more than a few MBs. " How did you do that ? I am now using about 150 Megs, still growing.
  18. By the way, do you know where is the Fedora download site ? i would like to get familiar with Fedora, now I am rather on Mandrake which is sometimes slightly different.
  19. Now i've got the hosting, so of course I will try have more space.I'm really impressed till now : - correct access times.- no limitation to ftp connexions : I was able to upload five files simultaneously.- the control pannel is really impressive.Presently,I'm trying to learn how to use php with the mysql database. I am more familiar with Oracle databases, but I should be able to learn in a reasonable amount of time.
  20. @saxsux : and what do you do when you loose the password on the rarfile on your cd ? You read what you write on the label ?
  21. DriveCrypt eems really great.Of course, I see no real reason for krypting my files : There a so many files that I forget where each one is ans what it's useful for.
  22. Are you using graphics with your Linux on 184 Megs ram ? Really feel satisfied ?
  23. Read your doc carefully. On unix or Linux shell scripts, "exec" means "execute what I tell you and exit immediately after that".This means that, in Unix, all the lines after the exec instruction are ignored...
  24. Now it's 1 gig... starts being correct. And no problem with big files, they accept up to two megs in a single file so you can put short avi movies.
  25. By the way, was your question really concerning "home only" or "in your whole life" ?I think answering the questions "what system are you using at work and home" would be a more exciting question. I think today everybody has to have a personal something, mac or Inel. And at your work, what do you use ? Sun-Os ? HP-UX ? I use AIX at work, and home I will not answer because people could be jalous, come home and steal my computers.
