Avoid Flash Disk Viruses This ruins a lot of Windows PC
wutske replied to x2envi's topic in Websites and Web Designing
bwa, having an Anti-virus program installed is everything you need (doesn't matter how you look at it, having no anti-virus solution up and running is suicide).Best way to avoid is not to use Microsoft programs (because they are the most used and most populair under viri-writers). -
there's a very good program available, it's called 'a search robot'. Google for something like 'windows xp speed up boot' (or do a search on the forums), a lot of guides are available on the net and they usualy do tell you the same:1) use msconfig to stop useless applications from starting up2) stop useless services from starting3) defrag your hdd ...and a lot more tweaks

It Just Isn't Fair That Windows Users Get All The Viruses
wutske replied to dserban's topic in Websites and Web Designing
more windows users than linux users, yes. Linux being written better than windows ? Nobody knows. Most people believe linux is written better than windows and they only believe this because there are less malware and exploits for linux. The reason that there is less malware for linux is because less time is being put into looking for possible holes. If you would spend all the time that has already been spent into looking for windows-hole, into looking for linux-holes ... a lot of people would feel very sorry for even thinking linux was the safest of them all. You could compare it to the Internet Explorer <-> Firefox battle. Everybody believed that Firefox was a lot safer than IE ... but as soon as Firefox gained popularity, so did the amount of exploits. At a given moment, FF even had more new security issues than Internet Explorer ! Think about that -
Having Network Card Issues On A Dual Boot Laptop

Does the NIC show up in the device manager ? (right-click 'my computer' > Manage > Device Manager) -
Take a quick look at it . The first page is an introdution and a small part about which hardware you might need. The rest of the article is about installing Xubuntu. Thanks for the link, your timing is perfect. One of these weeks I have to set up a linux server as a school assignment .

Some Questions About Your Computer Usage
wutske replied to Propeng's topic in Websites and Web Designing
the most used app isn't the best application you know . A lot of people use program X because they don't know Y or Z . Don't forget YOU are the one who's going to use the application so I suggest you to test the available program (or look for reviews, testimonials, etc ...).Personally, I'd suggest you to get WinXP+Avast+Tune Up program. WindowsXP because it's so widespread, it's mature, fast and stable. If you want, you could install Linux as your secondary OS. I would pay for an Anti-virus program, Avast, FreeAV and AVG are all good applications and they'll cost you nothing. Tuning applications are useless imho, sometimes they even make things worse than they already are. A program like CrapCleaner (CCleaner) is all you need, it removes useless files and searches for some faulty registry entries. -
I'm looking for a freeware program that can create DVDs which I can play on my standalone dvd player. Nothing to complex, creating simple menus, converting to the right format (I do care about quality, so being able to change some encoding settings is always welcome ) and burning the disc is more than enough.

who knows . It might be an 'inside joke' (the virus on the medion computers was 13 years old) or maybe an infected computer in the manufacturers lab has been infected.
-
One more addition ... don't buy a computer and/or hardware anymore . It has happend before that a new computer or new piece of hardware came with a virus installed (two recent cases: medion laptops and Maxtor external hard disk drives).

uhm, PET bottles are strong too. You realy have to throw (yes, throw, not just drop) them very hard to get them leaking. They are made to sustain quite some pressure. I don't realy feel bad if I buy new bottles everytime I go to the store, mainly because they are being recycled anyway. I'd also rather run around with two seperate 0,5l bottles in my backpack because then I can distribute the space they take (I've been so stupid to buy a €80 backpack especialy for my laptop just to find out that there just isn't enough room for my laptop, books, food, drinks, rain clothing (I go to school by bike) and some other stuff I usualy have to carry around with me).

What a big opinion for someone who has only used it once ... I hope you don't judge everything this fast because then I wouldn't like to know you. About your problem, type the following in the adressbar: opera:config in the search box, type: History Navigation Mode The settings are: I've always had it set to 3 and I've never had any problems.

I don't realy recommend using only the windows firewall. First of all, it's doesn't have outbound protection (eg. if there's some kind of malicious software installed on your computer, then it should be blocked before it can send data or spam or ...), second of all, it's weak and since it's been used so often it's the number one target for hackers. And if the PC cillin doesn't allow wifi connection, then it should be configured better.

He means the german group Tokio Hotel. I just love them (for their music), powerfull, yet still sensitive with meaningfull lyrics . For those who don't know them, search for "Tokio Hotel" on https://www.deezer.com/en/

You get used to it . Getting a laptop is a good thing, I'm now sitting quite relaxed in the sofa, much better for my back I guess (probably worse for my wrists, especialy since I've already had RSI problems with my wrists )

What motherboard do you have ? Does it support more than 512Mb RAM (it's probably like 10 years old if it doesn't do so ) ? How many memory modules are already installed ? Are the memory modules single-sided our double-sided (are there memory chips on both sides of the RAM cards ? ) ? Have you tried installing only the 256Mb RAM card ?

There's no way this will speed up your internet access. First of all, your download and upload speeds are limited by your ISP and it's impossible to get faster. Most proxy servers available are slow (because a lot of users are using it and are congesting the line).Anonymity is doubtfull too, you don't know who owns the server and you don't know what the intentions of the owner are. Plus, not every server offers full anonymity, there are three kinds, transparent, anonymous and full anonymous (just google, I'm too lazy to explain the difference ).Freedom on the other hand is a fact, proxy server abroad can allow you to visit sites that aren't available for every country.

We usualy recycle al our plastic bottles (and cans and drink flacons), so we won't realy need it . It's a good idea tough . A water filter isn't a bad idea, but doesn't is use electricity (I don't know where you're from, but a lot of electricity is still generated using processes that generate a lot of polution).

I have used Comodo firewall before when I was looking for a replacement for Sygate Personal Firewall, back then I didn't realy like it (mainly because I was looking for something exactly like SPF, but something that didn't hung when I used Mercury Messenger). At the moment I use Comodo Firewall Pro Beta on my laptop (Vista Home Premium) and I must say that I'm moderatly happy with it , you'll have to take your time (a lot) to set it up exactly the way you want it. The built-in Defense+ system is a nice addition (it monitor application behaviour), tough it's annoying because by default it ask you everytime a program uses a DLL, access the registry, ... I've turned it down so I'd ask me a lot less -if it asks too much you don't read the messages anymore, rendering the defense+ system useless-. I'd say, give it a try, take your time and you'll be happy .ps. the defense+ system can solve a problem with WMP11 . Normaly, it'd take about 5-10 seconds before a track would load and then the song sometimes skipped. If you prevent WMP from loading MFPMP.exe, this problem is solved (the downside is that you can't play wmv or wma files anymore).

lol , I found it on softpedia.com , thanks for looking it up anyway .I did however find a nice program called dirLock (http://download.cnet.com/dirLock/3000-2092_4-10416554.html). Too bad I have to retype my password everytime I want to lock it, but that's the least of my problems

That would be ideal ... but I'm running a single user environement (I sometimes share my laptop with other people and they can use my account). But your suggestion reminded me about a program Microsoft released a while ago (and removed it a week later ). Anyone else remembers this program ? //edit: microsoft private folder it is //edit2: it does exactly what I want it to do, but I'm limited to only one folder ... and that not what I want :?

Adaware is NOT a virusscanner nor does it protect you from virusses. Adaware is -as it's name implies- a program that looks for adware, this is something completely different than a virus. My personal favorite is Avast, though it's results aren't the best of the crowd (I had a link to a document that compared all the available scanning engines, but I can't find it anymore ).
