  1. wrong time, wrong person. I've been trying to install Gentoo on my computer for a whole day ... nothing, nada, noppes. Can't realy say that that is reliable ? Slax is pretty reliable, as longs as you don't start adding modules, these sometimes get stuffed up or there are some dependecies missing.
  2. errrm, actualy ... there have been numerous topics dealing about this, you should check out the topics in the war of the OS subforum.
  3. so you first boot into DOS and then you run slax from the USB-stick ? How do you do this ? Plus, you've forgotten to mention the most important thing about slax, it's full customisable using a windows app. You can add and remove software (these are provided in modules) before you create your own, personal live-cd
  4. I'm still trying to understand your myspace concept. I don't have a myspace account (and I'm refusing to get one), but I can't remember having seen a myspace page that has toolboxes like in the link you just gave.Anyways, thanks for the page, it's well designed, has a good structure so I guess I'll visit it from time to time (when I'm back in a webdesigner mood ).ps. myspace isn't just for youngsters. A lot of musicians have a myspace too and some new musicians are being discovered through myspace (eg. Secondhand Serenade).
  5. You can capture your screen using the windows media encoder (http://www.microsoft.com/expression/eng/) . For the text boxed, fades etc ... you can use windows movie maker. Last but not least, you can convert the .wmv file into a .flv file using Super from erightsoft (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html).It's all free
  6. Thanks for the info , I love to play old-skool games from time to time, they prove that fancy graphics and details aren't nessecary
  7. Run a checkdisk from the windows recovery console. To do this, insert your WinXP installation cd and wait untill you get the option to enter the recovery mode (this shouldn't take too lang). It might be the case that you'll need to load drivers for your hard disk controller (this is usualy the case if you have a SATA hdd), you'll need a driver disk and when the setup asks to press F6 to load the drivers, you should do this. So, when you are in the recovery console you'll have to select your windows installation (there should only be one) and you'll have to enter the administrator password. Then you type the following: chkdsk /r and let the computer do it's work. The /r option finds bad sectors, re-allocates them and tries to recover information. If you get a message that there isn't a hdd or a windows installation available, then one of the following things might be wrong: completely dead hard disk drive (in this case, the BIOS shouldn't find the hdd either) you haven't loaded the drivers for the hdd controller the partition table of your hdd is bogus I know this is a bit difficult if it's your first time, if you realy don't understand it, it's best to find someone who knows somethings about computers and is willing to help you (a friend, relative or a computer store if you want to waste money ).
  8. if you don't use it, you can disable the task scheduler service too. for more info on COM+: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm
  9. Interesting , but:2. doesn't work if you have a router at home. This trick renews the IP adres from your computer (=a private adres if you have a router and these private adresses are invisible from the outside). If you have a router and you need a new IP, you simply have to turn off the router, wait a minute or two and turn it on again.3. nice, but free proxies usualy are slow4. same things as 3. + you're abusing the system, people offer you their bandwith for security reasons, not for your downloading pleasure.5. what link ???
  10. interesting, a vision from someone who realy used a lot browsers before starting to piss on Internet Explorer .I personaly I'm not too fancy about Internet Explorer or Firefox. It takes too much trouble to get IE safe and secure and since I'm a lazy person I try to avoid having to do that. Firefox is getting more like IE, the number of known bugs and security holes grows every day ... the 'safe' days of FF are over. I'm a happy Opera user and even tough it doesn't allways starts very fast, it still works a lot faster and more convenient than FF does.
  11. There are 2 kinds of programming languages, object oriented and not-object oriented (<- can't remember the exact name ). Once you've learned a programming language (and you know how to program), it isn't to hard to learn another one if it's the same kind of language (eg. if you learn C++, which is an object oriented language, you won't have too much trouble learning C# or some other OO languages). If I were you, I'd start with C++, but the choice is up to you .ps. please don't start with Visual Basic. It might be an easy language to learn, but it realy sucks when it comes to the rules of programming, it'll only teach you bad habbits.//edit: just to make things a bit more confusing, there's another kind of programming language, usualy called scritping languages. The difference is that you don't have to compile (making an executable file) these codes before you can use it.
  12. now I finaly know why the sticker is torn on my laptop . I honestly didn't care that it was damaged, my sister her laptop and a friend's laptop had the same 'problem', so I assumed it was normal.
  13. This is going to be a very short list.Licensed and legal:Windows XP Pro (main pc)Windows Vista Home Premium (Laptop)Xilinx ISEMultisim 2001ModelsimI use a lot of freeware applications, but I'm not going to list them because I have too many of them . I only have like 5% of software for which I have to pay and 50% of that isn't legal (I'm not realy proud on that fact, but as a student I just can't afford everything I need/want)
  14. The only advantage of a camera phone is that it's already in your pocket . Some camera phones are good enough to capture some pictures on an event (where you don't want to walk around all the time with a camera bag), but only for the emotion/memory/feeling/mood, not for the quality.
  15. actualy, 'streaming video' isn't the correct term if you refer to sites like youtube, dailymotion, ... These sites offer a flash player that is embedded in a website and which plays a movie file that your browser is downloading in the background. The two sites that you gave just find out what file your browser is downloading in the background and then offers you the direct link. Sometimes you can even find the direct link to the video in the html code.
  16. It certainly looks good . But, I'd drop the "Hello visitor from BELGIUM" thing, I personaly things such gimmicks suck and shouldn't be on a website. Secondly, I'd love to see a freeware/shareware filter, some people only want freeware and they certainly aren't going to use your website to find it. I also have absolutely no idea why on earth you are doing this: Why are you repeating yourself ? Don't forget that search engines don't like this behaviour. Last thing is the "Recommended" thing on top, it's empty Anyway, keep up the good work
  17. the only reason I have Picasa installed was for uploading my Europeade pictures to my picasaweb album. In general, I'm not too fancy with 'picture-organising-software', I have all my photo sorted in a set of folders and subfolder and I can easily find all of my photos. For editing, I prefer using The Gimp and Image Analyzer. Slideshow are done using Faststone Maxview (which replaces the windows image&fax preview thing). Not exactly an all-in-one solution, but it works a lot better than Picasa :Pjust my 2 cents
  18. For it's search results I'd give it a 9/10 (perfection doesn't exist, neither does a 10/10).For it's mail service, I'll give it a 8/10 (because of the advertisements).Picasa gets a 5/10 (for having no sub-albums and bad Opera support)Other things don't get a rating because I hardly use them. And for it interfering too much with my life, I'd give it a 6/10.
  19. I've had a lot of different things on my desktop. I've had cars, bikes, women, shapes, landscapes, flowers and just a simple background color (no image). I haven't had much animals tough. Lately I've been using a lot of b&w images for my desktop because they don't draw too much attention and I just like b&w images . Currently I have a fallen angel on my desktop.
  20. when I want to open a link in the navigation part of your website, this opens a new window. Avoid this as long as the linked page is still in the same domain (belongs to your website).I also don't like the green-blue thing on the frontpage, it looks a bit like advertisments and I'd almost closed the website before even reading it.
  21. it's quite obvious that your wireless range gets a boost when you switch from 802.11b to 802.11g . 802.11b is the slowest technique of them all, followed by 802.11a, 802.11g and 802.11n . 802.11a and 802.11g have the same maximum transfer rate, but 802.11a uses a higher frequency (shoter wavelength) and thus has a smaller range, thus 802.11g is better .
  22. euhm ... spam isn't only annoying because it send crap to your mail box, but it also generates a lot of traffic which in fact slows down the internet. By giving overloading spambots with fake adresses, you also let them generate a lot more useless traffic ... thus you're not realy fighting the problem.
  23. I've been using Avast for a long time now and I'm very happy about it. It's maybe not as good as Antivir, but working with avast is more pleasant than antivir.
  24. not bad, but I still prefer filefront.com . Unlimited photoalbum, hosts your videos as flash video (like youtube), photoalbum, blog, ... everything you need
  25. It's like sex, there's no such thing as 100% protection . There are some website that can check your pc for vulnerabilities, but your better off not relying on them. There's a small checklist of things you must have and must do have anti-virus software installed and running in the background have a firewall installed and running in the background have a few anti-malware apps installed and let them do a regular scan (real-time protection is a good idea too, but it'll only use more resources) avoid using Internet Explorer, it's the main target don't visit louche sites make sure all your software is up to date Think before you act. Don't enter your password everywhere you're asked for, don't click on a link without being sure it's safe, ...) Anyway, if you're still looking for some sites:Secunia Software Inspector (checks to see if your software is up to date, it doesn't know every program tough): http://www.flexerasoftware.com/enterprise/products/software-vulnerability-management/corporate-software-inspector/ Firewall test: http://www.hackerwatch.org/probe/ (useless if you're behind a router) Browser security check: http://bcheck.scanit.be/bcheck/
