  1. I've never known the difference between football and soccer . Is soccer the game you play with an oval ball or is that football ? I've also hear the word fussball, but that might be a German one
  2. Does Yahoo Messenger allow you to sign in with a Live account ? I know you can add Yahoo contacts to your Live Messenger contact list (and vice versa), but I don't know about singing in with a different messenger .ps. I always use Mercury Messenger for chatting, it's a memory hog, but it certainly kicks every other free live messenger alternative
  3. so, by giving some unknown sites your information which they have to remove is a smart thing ?
  4. I'm looking for a freeware PIM (personal information manager), something like outlook, but more lightweigth (and free of course ) . It shouldn't be able to do much, just: Calendar, Contacts and maybe capable of sending/receiving e-mail Sync with a PocketPC Sync with Google Calendar Anybody knows a free app that can do this ?
  5. shopping Sporting is nothing for me, going to school by bike (2x 13km a day) is more than enough for me . Other than that, flagswinging (if you'd call it a sport) is my all time favourite
  6. I'm realy addicted to the internet . A week or 2 ago, I went to Buret with my class for a week of teambuilding. Most of us brought their laptops with them (we are electronics-ict students for a reason ) and so did I , only to find out that Buret is a retarded village where nobody has wireless internet .So, basicaly, I spend 3,5 day without internet on my laptop while trying to download my e-mails using my pda when we were on foot. After 3,5 day, we suddenly had an unsecured network available and damn we were happy . Everybody with their laptops in the kitchen where the recpetion was best .I was realy happy that I could chat again, send mails again and last but not least, talking to my girlfriend
  7. An account is usualy suspended because you don't have enough credit (= you don't post enough on these forums). You'll need to get your credits above a certain amount (something about 5 credits) to get your account un-suspended.
  8. Everytime I connect my usb stick to my laptop (vista), a pop-up appear asking whether I want to scan and repair my usb stick. It does this because I don't use the "safely remove device" thingy in the taskbar .I've never had any problems with the usb key before so I'm not going to waste my time to check it for errors. Is there a way to disable this annoying popup ?
  9. Windows now works by calculating some key based on some hardware components in your computer, then sends it to Microsoft together with a unique id for your windows installation, just to make sure your only using windows on one computer. This has proven to be ...crap !I've always hated activating microsoft software, it limits possibilities, it identifies you in redmond and your sc***** when you upgrade your computer. So I got thinking about another way to prevent piracy. This technique has been used before to protect expensive and professional software from being pirated, if you buy the program, you get a usb key. If this key -which seems to be very hard to copy- isn't present then the program doesn't work.So why can't microsoft do this ? Bundling a key to 'activate' windows, office, etc ... This would be a lot more easy and this does allow users to install windows on more than one computer whilst only using on at a time (something I tought was allowed by microsoft). Why don't they make it so hard for us while it can be a lot more easy ?
  10. wot ? I've read some things I'd like to ... correct. First of all, Vista isn't bad at all, I used to think the same but I've been using it for about a year and after some tweaking and chaning some settings it does run great ! And guess on what it runs ? Yes, a Dell. I haven't had any problems with this laptop neither did my school (they were using Dell that were like 4-5 years old ).As for processor, even tough I'm a fan boy, I advise you to go for a Core2 Duo, they are fast and consume only a litlle amount of energy. Avoid getting a PentiumD, they are hot and slow .Btw, skype runs fine on AMD cpu's .Last thing, can't imagine an iMac is cheaper than a regular pc . Their iBooks are way too expensive (a €1255 iBook can never match my Inspiron 6400).
  11. I give google a 10/10 too for their search results, yet I do not use google any more as my primary search engine. I got a bit bothered by the fact that a lot of things I do and have on the internet are property of Google (search, gmail, calendar, maps, blogspot, most ads on websites, ...) and they all link to my profile. I got a bit worried about my id and that's why I've switched to Yahoo as my main search engine and as my main route planner and I'm pleased with it, the search results are almost as good as the ones google returns and I even like the route planner more than google.maps . What Quatrux said is right, I even do recognise myself a bit in it; I do have a few websites in my bar that I visit more than once a day and sometimes that all I visit. A few years ago -when I didn't have a social life - I visited a lot more fora, I read like 10 hardware reviews a day (I did learn a lot from those reviews and I must admit I don't feel up-to-date anymore when it comes to hardwareknowledge), I browsed a huge amount of website, those days are over .
  12. Recently Windows Live Hotmail started to have some problems. First problem is that when I want to reply or forward a mail, it doesn't include the mail (the box in wich I have to compose my mail is empty). Now the real problem is that sometimes it does include the old mail (the one on wich I want to reply) when I press "send" and sometimes it doesn't. Am I the only one having these problems ? [After clicking the send button hotmail gave me this page, my whole text was gone] ps. I do use Opera and haven't had this problem before.
  13. It's cool, that I must admit , but I wouldn't use for as a background either. I prefer darker wallpapers without bright spots, b/w backgrounds are my favourites . You should try converting it to B/W and change the curves a bit, looks much better .
  14. I've used Avast for a long time now and I'm very happy about it (if you configure it correctly, because it tends to stall Vista a lot ). It has a great on-access protection and they update the database very often. I'm not a fan of AVG and Free-AV, basicaly because their user interface is below par , they are hard to use, BUT they do offer better protection over Avast.Bitdefender (free version) and ClamAV are good back-ups, but aren't suited for main protection since they don't offer an on-access scanner.
  15. It's a good thing they make it harder for bots, but they shouldn't make it harder for people. I sometimes get annoyed by these captchas because even I can't enter them correctly . A more efficient way of using captchas is to let people recognise objects or to select the right image. This technique has been used already, people have to select the photo with a cat out of 9 different images.A lot more easy and almost impossible to crack.
  16. Allright, crap , I still have a lot of things to learn about java , EDT, serlialization ... I think I'll spend my weekend reading, reading and more reading :P//edit: as soon as I've found out how to use vector, I'll implement them in my program , don't want to write a crappy project, going for at least 18/20
  17. lol . Instead of making a 'lightweight' version for the unsupported browsers. Anyway, if that site was made according to the W3C standards then there shouldn't be a problem with using different browsers or operating systems.I'm also surprised they do block Firefox and not Opera, since Opera is more known for support less sites (this used to be true, but nowadays Opera is on the same level as Firefox).
  18. in gmail you don't create folders but labels. It's actualy easy once you get used to it . Movig existing messages to a label is a bit more complex, 1 step more complex in fact . First you add the label(s) and then you archive the message so it isn't visible in the 'main' inbox anymore.
  19. I think the cold classroom was freezing my brains a bit . It is possible to create an array of checkboxes and I did it this way (it's still very basic): private void generateComponents() { JCheckBox[] seat_checks; seat_checks = new JCheckBox[6]; for (int i=0;i<6;i++) { seat_checks[i] = new JCheckBox("seat " + String.valueOf(i)); checkspanel.add(seat_checks[i]); } } Still don't know why it didn't work this morning @ethergeek: I know vectors are more dynamic then arrays, but are there any other advantagen when using them ?
  20. I'm currently working on a small project for school. I need to place a variable amount of checkboxes in a jPanel, but I have no idea how to start .My first tought was to create an array of checkboxes, but this doesn't seem to work .Any ideas ?
  21. To speed things up a bit, windows caches all the thumbnails it has created in a series of thumbnailcaches. After an extent period of time, these files get huge (before re-installing Vista, my thumbnailcaches had a total size of 900Mb) and big files slow down your system so it's a good things to clean them up. Where ? The caches are located in: C:\Users\your_name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\ . How ? You'll see 6 files in the folder previously mentioned, select them all and delete them. Explorer will complain that it can't delete the files, but ... it did understand what you wanted to do, because the caches are now 1Mb or 1K each (if not, try deleting them again helps). Saves you a lot of spaces and time //edit: I'm not 100% sure, but I think that rebooting completely clears the caches, but again, not sure
  22. Gallery from menalto is realy the best gallery software, it very easy to manage and there's a java-application (and applet) available to easily upload, sort and add titles to images.
  23. Nice gimmick, but useless and annoying imho . It won't work here anyway, I've disabled all javascript options in Opera, damn stupid features .
  24. I've been using Avast for a few years now and I'm happy about it, except (and I've only recently found that out) the fact that it realy slows down Vista if you set it to scan dynamic libraries (dlls) on load. If that option is enabled, showing the send-to menu takes upto 15 seconds, showing the network-popup-thingy takes 5 seconds, network center is loaded after 7 seconds ... I've now disabled it to speed things up and set it to scan every created or modified file, safety first you know
  25. You could write a small script that only shows your friend's name if the operating system is windows, macos or linux.
