Awesome about the partition information, I have a sizeable partition (20-30gig and a half gig swap or something) for my current linux install so that'll work fine, I just didn't want to have to mess with my other partition sizes too much.Another question, how far along in the sequence before you could hypothetically stop and boot into another OS, and pick up the install the next day? I just have to work everyday so I'd be doing this piece by piece at night when I have a block of free time to kill. Not sure when I'll get to start this, but I hope it will be soon. I'm psyched hehe.

Well, I'm on the verge of doing some major formats/reinstallations on my HD's and I figured it's a good time to re-evaluate my OS choices and see if I want to try anything new out. I'm heavily considering Gentoo currently. I've always wanted to at least try it out but it always seemed kind of daunting so I never got around to it. While I have some linux experience I am far from adept in it so I never really got to the point where I just said "alright I'm gonna do it"Until now.So I know alot of the linux users here run Gentoo or have used it at some point so I have a few questions I was wondering if you guys could answer for me...a)Does portage (I believe that's what it is called) do a good job at software management/aquisition? I am one of the people who prefer not to have to deal with dependency issues if at all possible. As far as I can tell, you just use the emerge command and give a app name and it handles everything for you... is that accurate?b)How strict are the initial partitioning requirements for it? I was skimming over the installation handbook and it basically said you need 3 primary partitions to use on a drive for it... not sure if I can have that currently and it may be a pain to set it up like that (do-able, but if its not necessary I thought I'd check to save effort)c)Is there anything really important that someone should consider before installing Gentoo?I've used multiple linux distros before, but none were ones that took much knowledge of linux (Redhat/fedora, mandrake, mepis, ubuntu, suse, etc) So I was hoping to make the move to gentoo. I'm willing to put in the time to learn how to things 'the gentoo way' I just don't want to get smacked down before I even get underway haha. Figure I may as well check my concerns now while I haven't done anything drastic yet. Thanks for your help, and if you have any random Gentoo comments or want to give reasons why I should or shouldn't move to Gentoo, fire away.

I was talking to my buddy for a few minutes, apparently the one he used was this in-house software they developed at the company so I guess it won't help you out much, but it sounds like it was along the same lines. This type of software seems pretty cool for project management though, I can imagine it'd rock even for some university project group work I'll be doing in my upcomming semester Great for organization and everything, keeping everyone on the same page so to speak

What Is Your Opinion Of The Mozilla Products ?
Jeigh1405241495 replied to Marche00's topic in Software
Hearing you people say you might switch back for IE7 makes me cry inside haha. I won't be switcihng back unless they majorly MAJORLY rework IE and basically fix everything about it, because almsot everything about ie annoys me But thats just my opinion hehe.I switched away from IE before firefox was out, to Mozilla. I used it and IE about 50/50. Then I switched to... what was its original name... firebird? Loved it, stuck with it through the name change, and basically IE was (and still is) only used for the few sites that are incompatible with firefox.I use thunderbird here at work for my email and it's fine. I've never used email clients alot so I don't really have that strong of an opinion about them... my last work place used Excahnge alot so I used outlook and I really don't have any reason to like one more then the other for the features I use. I think outlook is more full featured in ways but t hat's just what I've seen from afar, without actually delving that far into either.Regardless, Mozilla products are all of great quality and I hope they stick around for as long as I am (I have never tried Camino for the mac, but from what I've seen/heard it is a great browser as well.) -
Hmm, I glanced at the site a bit... so is there an overall "goal" of it... or is it moreso just to get to know the other people who use it through the profiles and chat and everything. It seems like you people enjoy it so I'm trying to find out the fascination B)From the info on the site that I read it sounded like you make a avatar/profile then just post on forums and play some mini games and chat? Is that about right or is there more to it that I'm missing?

I agree that *nix based stuff is more secure then windows, but wow you guys give it too much credit haha. If people decide to start screwing with osx, I can't imagine them being "oh no... it's based on unix...can't ever hurt it!". There are independant studies done that show many security weaknesses in many non-windows OS's I'm not trying to defend M$ or diss unix... I just think you guys are making it sound little too much like unix systems are this unbreakable uber system that will never need to be changed because if you are running it nothing bad can ever happen heh ;)Oh and nightfox.... firefox is not the most popular browser... they have a huge market share compared to a couple years ago but still, nothing compared to IE. Also, there are numerous security holes in fierfox that get patched regularly... thats why they release updates that seem to change very little. Security fixes :DSo as for my views on if there is this macOSX virus. I can't see it mattering tooo much. Even though the one back then was a hoax or whatnot, if the news of one was all it would take for people to start developing them, then we would be seeing way more poppin up. Windows IS less secure, AND they have the market share hands down, meaning the punks writing viruses can do the most damage with the least effort. Why would someone bother writing a mac virus and shutting down a handful of businesses and annoying a bunch of home users, when an easier to write windows virus can make cnn in a day due to projected loss to businesses trying to rebound from downed systems.

How Long Have You Been Programming ?
Jeigh1405241495 replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Programming
Hasn't been too long for me... well I guess it depends on your perception of time really...Started oooh, 6 years ago? Grade 10, GW Basic haha. My high school had no money and barely had computers. Tiny little town. So the teachers didn't know that the language was pretty outdated, regardless gave me an intro into programming. I never did anything fancy with it since the teacher was just following along in her book and I had no real resources to get much more info on it, but still it gave me the bug. Then gr11-12 was me learning web stuff, not really programming languages but html, a tiny bit of javascript, stuff like that. Kept me interested but wasn't very amazing stuff. Finally got to university, CS == freedom. First year I learned java and VB/SQL, and then last year I started learning C. Now I've learnt/am learning C++ and PHP for the job I have right now. I wouldn't really say I "know" any of the languages, but I know lots of each... there's so much you can hypothetically learn about them that I always feel weird saying I am fluent in one because I know there are people who only use that language that are much more adept with it. UNtil I get done university though I doubt I'll get to hone my skills toooo much with any one. Regardless I'm getting a good taste, probably get another language under my belt next year and whatnot. Regardless I don't see me giving up on programming anytime soon -
My Thoughts On Windows Vista Beta 2
Jeigh1405241495 replied to xboxrulz1405241485's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Ooooh vista, how wonderful a story you weave. For me, it's going to be a pain in the *bottom* once it comes out. FIrstly, eye candy isn't important to me. FUNCTIONAL eye candy is awesome, for people who like those OSX style docks thats great. Making 99% of the gui translucent just rapes your system and doesn't actually benefit much (unless like sarah mentioned you can actually see the folders behind other folders and their contents, that would be useful) but the majority of it will simply be for show. Meaning I'll be doing my best to disable most of it (assuming I ever upgrade to vista).I'm also still saying it won't be out this year. It could happen, but I doubt it. I just have a feeling it'll be out first half of next year... probably will get held back to either unbreak something or remove glitchy features. Frankly the longer it stays away the better for me, as I don't want to upgrade and the longer it's not out for, the longer it'll be before the majority of people start switching over.I had completely forgotten about the built in DRM stuff... that should be interesting too. To see how intense it is, or see how crackable it is haha. -
Video Card: Need Help On Purchasing A Video Card
Jeigh1405241495 replied to SpartacusUSTASA's topic in Hardware Workshop
I would assume he is talking about a graphics card, since the two terms 'graphics' and 'video' are used interchangably by most people, and he mentioned having issues involving games, not tv out type things. -
You can't really say smaller = less durable. I've seen stress tests done on the iPod nano (tiny little thing) where they basically ran over it with a car and it still ran. Obviously the screen was busted, but that'll happen to a device regardless of the case size. As long as a company uses the right materials they can reduce a devices size dramatically without it having a detrimental effect on the durability. Also, a smaller size doesn't necessarily mean a thinner case. The parts inside could be smaller, or laid out more efficiently, giving the illusion of a thinner case when in fact there is just less internal room needed for parts. I'd guess in this case, thats not what is happening, but it's a possibility.

Wait..what? I think I'm missing something... how is a text based game 3d? Text is text... which is 2d... unless you use a pseudo 3d font in which it's not exactly any different :|So what are these '3d text based games' ? I'm kinda curious now...

Wow, seeing as the majority of my attempts at 3d modeling ended in me lighting a compuyter on fire, I think those are awesome! I really like the mech-like robot thing at the top. The shocks or coils or whatnot in the legs are pretty awesome looking. I like the reflection on the tv and the perspective of the still in the second one. Good work indeed.I'd ramble more, but I'm sure you want some opinions of people who actually know what they are doing in regards to modeling haha

I've never really looked into that kind of software before, the only work I've done everyone was local. SO is it mainly to just organize files between group members who may need access to them from remote locations? (I only looked at the site for a second)I know I have a friend who used to use something similar that was apparently amazing at one of his previous employers, I'll ask him about it if I see him online later.

Cool, excluding Warcraft 2 and 3 I haven't like too many fantasy RTS's, hopefully this one will also be one I like.Note - There is a gaming forum down farther where this type of news would be more appropriately contained. Just so you know for in the future in case a mod doesn't move this.

Windows Vista Discussions
Jeigh1405241495 replied to philbrennan537's topic in Websites and Web Designing
I agree with the ideas that it will be bloated. Personally I'd rather have a streamlined OS interface that looks nice but still runs well. We don't need "futuristic" looking desktops in order to enjoy an OS... I'd prefer it just not be a piece of crap myself They are going for mass appeal, and non-techies will eat Vista up once they see all the shinyness. I agree also that it won't be out until 2007... they've pushed it back this far and have no reason to release it before they want to... meaning they still have time to break more things and remove more features and make the interface even prettier ...;)Vista is at the bottom of my priority list. Personally I don't plan to upgrade for a long loooong time. I didn't get XP until it's bugs were worked out, and I think Vista will be 10 times worse. Hell, maybe some good will come out of it and more people will start switching to linux heh. I know I'll be using it more if programs stop being compatible (or at least able to be run well) on xp.Then again who knows, M$ could release the OS on time, have the system req's lower then expected, and make it the best OS ever........ what...it could happen.... -
Boast About The Collector's Spirit In You
Jeigh1405241495 replied to miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG's topic in Introductions
I used to collect the generic stuff, baseball/hockey cards and the like. I collected coins for a short while but never got too into it... I dunno I think I enjoy seeing different things but not that interested in holding onto them. I more like exploring into different collectibles' realms but not actually caring if I own them or just get to see them for a short time. (that came out weird, but I am not awake enough yet to reword it better haha) -
I voted for other simply because I've only truly played the old school zelda games. I've played the n64 ones to an extent, but not owning my own n64 limited that severely. Maybe I'll have to get my hands on someones who doesn't play anymore and give them a run through... I've always wanted to try them out more then I have but I just never really got aorund to it. If I do I'm sure I'll come back here rambling about which I think is better then hehe

I think if they offered an iPod quality mp3 player with a good quality pda level of available software, THAT would finally be what convinced me to spend that much money on an iPod. I could go for having a multi-purpose handheld that actually does each of it's jobs as well as any device does one of the inidividual tasks.

New Catalyst For Ati Radeonx1900 Series version 6.2
Jeigh1405241495 replied to jedipi's topic in Websites and Web Designing
Personally, wehnever either company releases a new feature through their drivers I really like it. It's nice to see the companies trying to think up new ways to improve their cards rather then the usual "OMG HIGHER CLOCK MORE RAM MORE CORES WEEE" type speed boosts. Sure those are awesome, but once you HAVE the card it's nice to get some new things that you didn't expect to, even if they are just features for teh noobs.Glad you made this post though, I had forgotten to upgrade my Cat's for a few driver versions... and we can't have cobwebs growing on the drivers now can we -
I never trust those big money schemes... I mean real advertising is one thing but this type just seem fishy to me. Plus if they were having that much money to give to their users, why would they need a billion popups on their site haha.

Actually the worldwide sales for PSP vs DS are within a million units... at least they were a month or two ago. They both had about 14 mil units sold. While I agree its not needed, its a smart strategy that nintendo has always done. I mean gba, gba sp, gba micro? Come on, you can't say them selling the super micro version of the gba that alot of people already have 2 versions of is a required upgrade ;)Nintendo makes a KILLING by doing this, and until people stop buying them why would they stop releasing them haha. Personally to me it means the original drops in price, and if I decide to buy one I can either get one cheaper, or a nicer designed one. It doesn't affect those who have one, and those getting one for the first time now get a nicer design. Seems fine to me PLus they need to keep bumping hardware sales for their handhelds until the next actual gameboy comes out.

Awesome, I've never really thought about it but was always curious how those bots worked and if you could influence them directly in any way, I'll have to read up a bit on that site you posted when I have some more free time, thanks for the link

Can I Use Dreamweaver With This Free Host ?
Jeigh1405241495 replied to clear's topic in Web Hosting Support
Oh yea, I forgot to suggest CMS's... which is odd since I am using one currently... but yea those are really good especially for people who don't want to put a huge amount of time into a site to keep it up to date and still have it looking insanely professional. Most CMS's have a ton of theme's you can download, and it's not hard to mess around with the code to configure them to your personal liking. They also have a simple form based entry system usually for making news posts and whatnot and they automatically handle all the information you upload. If you want to have a regularly updated news page, or a blog like page, or anything of that sort, I would suggest checking out the CMS choices (they can be installed right in cpanel in the fantastico menu I believe) -
twitch, the reason the EFF cares is becauseA)Most computer users trust there systems, therefor they will keep much personal data on there (even if we know you shouldn't unless its well protected)B)The average person is likely to trust an app from googleC)Google is making their data much more vulnerable. Now I didn't read your whole post as I read the original articles about this all a week or so ago, however I did notice you said they would have the datat all firewalled. That isn't the point of the EFF's arguments. They are saying if the government gets a subpoena (apparently quite easy to do, it's not even as hard as getting a search warrant) BOOM, they'll have access to all of googles data for a certain person. This is a pretty hardcore violation of privacy, ESPECIALLY if they start turning this feature on by default. While google will make sure to cover there legal *bottom* (putting it in the eula or whatever) they still shouldn't do doing this stuff. I don't care if it's a "genuine service" they are trying to offer, this is a bad way to go about it.You kept saying people would be stupid to have personal data on a computer. Well then you just insulted a shitload of people, because in case you haven't noticed ALOT of the world is run by computers now. Plus someone can have an amazing firewall... and if they get google desktop and dont know of this new feature, all of a sudden they authorized their data to be a subpoena away from being viewed by the government or whoever. I wish the US gov was too busy tapping their citizens phones to not care about this, but I'm sure that's not the case. But yes to summarize, everytime you said that important data should be firewalled... irrelevant if this program copies the data out through a program you are letting communicate past the firewall. The EFF knows what they are doing, I'm glad they are at least making google realize this might not have been a good choice. Now, if they release it as a seperate download which blatently states "YOUR DATA SHALL BE COPIED ONTO OUR CORPORATE SERVERS FOR SEARCH USE" that is fine, people will then either know what they are doing or are too lazy to read to care. But users should not be expected to have to check all the new options in the option menu of a prog every time they download an update for it or else their data gets copied to google's servers without them knowing :S</rant>
