  1. I found the command, but I've reconfigured the darn thing a million times! Everytime I restart it, It's still at the default 800x600 even though I see the NVIDIA logo (which usually means a sucessful install). I might download another Linux distro and attempt to use it. I don't know why it is mainly Debian that gives the NVIDIA problems...[N]F
  2. Spider is a free PHP & MySQL backend search engine & spider. I felt that I had to write a review about it, since it is a great search engine that is very similar to Google in ways. Sphider's homepage is located here: http://www.sphider.eu/ My high school's website is getting a makeover for when we move into the new building that is currently under construction. Google's a great search engine but it grabs pages from other pages in the district and that isn't cool. Plus, it can take 3 hours for any template changes to take effect in our custom search page. Not cool. So we're planning on a custom search engine and Sphider seems promising to our needs. The admin area has the ability to launch the spider and you can pause indexing too... just close the page showing you what has been indexed! Spider has been approved by me and is really handy tool! Just be careful of what you index. It is PERFECT for sites ranging in 100-2000 pages. It can do roughly 1000 pages per hour and my school's site is a few thousand. Most of our site is images and so sphider doesn't index images so it saves time. But since the spider doesn't index fast (~1 second per page), it is not suggested for sites over 2000 pages or you could just let it index overnight possibly. It's free and open source so you can tinker with it. Other than the indexing spider being really slow, it is worth a try if you want somewhat Google quality search results for your site! I rate it a 7/10. [N]F
  3. I re-installed a fresh copy of Debian on an extra hard drive (I'm not about to experience the troubles I had on a good system) and so I tried to get the Nvidia drivers re-installed. I don't remember the way I did it before, but this time was much easier except I have to reconfigure X. I see the Nvidia logo which means that they were installed, I just need to configure X to use them. What is the command line? I could have swarn there was a command line for it!Thanks (again)![N]F
  4. I must admit, those are pretty good! I love them! I need to get some time to work on my photoshop skills... I do "small" tasks at a graphic design forum because my skills aren't the best, but those simply take my breath away! Nicely done![N]F
  5. Heh... they all seem to be that way, lol. Perhaps if you're interested, you can upload files directly through cpanel to your web space. Here's a HOWTO: 1) Login to cPanel (http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/) with your username and password. 2) Under "Site Management Tools" in the first row, last column, you should see an icon labled as "File Manager". Click it. 3) A new window will open. You should see your home directory (outside public_html folder). Click the folder icon (NOT the folder name!) next to "public_html" 4) Click on the link in the top "Upload files" and you can upload 12 files at once! 5) Click on the link in the top "New folder" to add a new folder. 6) Click on a folder or file NAME (not the icon) to change its properties (CHMOD, re-name, etc), delete, edit, etc. Good Luck! This will be much easier and is built into cpanel. You won't need to worry about getting a PHP script in and then keeping that script secure. Best of luck with building your site the hard way (uploading through cpanel) but I suppose with security freaks on the other end of the proxy, you'll have to do it this way. [N]F
  6. You don't think they have 2 servers with 500, 512 Terabyte hard drives in them, do you? Of course not! They have like 200,000 (I *think*, it could be 20,000) servers running. Some of them are web servers, some are mail servers for Gmail, some are the search servers, some are DNS servers, and others are for whatever projects Google has going on. Gmail can give 500 gigs to each user if they wanted.... but that is a lot of servers right there! Plus, don't expect to go to the local Google data center either. For security and preformance world wide, they've got servers hidden all over. That's the story for the servers... oh, I almost forgot! How can they keep adding new servers so quickly? Their servers are just normal PCs with custom software. That's how Google did it in the past and it is probably how they're going to keep doing it. Now personally, I can't wait for "Gdrive" because I currently use that software that turns your Gmail account into file storage. It would be nice to upload files LARGER than 10 MB, great for sending those highly critical large files I use hahaha I do find it very annoying to have to watch file sizes... "9.9" will just make it past, but something that is 10.1 won't... I mean, come on! Even SquirrelMail in cPanel allows me to send 50 MB attachments! Of course, I'd never use the mail server for file storage... that's what other services are for! lol [N]F
  7. hey, I need to know some "cyber laws" stuff. Here's the overview: this kid in my web design class at school goes onto his friend's website and makes a post about me calling me a ******* ****t (censored for a reason) and here's the part I don't get: he naturally hates me. I don't talk to him or make any other contact with him. THEN, on myspace, some other idiot decides to flame me in my school's forum and then it goes WAY BEYOND flamming... I mean, it gets personal. The thing on MySpace stopped (and I've repeatedly contacted MySpace asking them to remove the topics and nothing) but I found yet another post on the forum. In the last post, he says that if I read it, go to this link. The link is a Google search of "free speech", which I'm perfectly fine with. BUT, couldn't this count as slander/libel (they're quite possibly talking behind my back). One of them has probably been hacking my site too (the one I pay for, not here). I just wanted to know what the United States law says about stuff like that. I've been thinking that I might take 'em to court for verbal harassment, slander/libel, and anything else this fits under.I've shown the offensive content to school administrators, but they can't do anything because it happened outside of school (I figured this, but I might as well show them). I'm waiting for these idiots to threaten me so I can take 'em to court for all of that. As for the website, I've contacted the kid's host to see what they think of cyber harassment as the first post was NOT freedom of speech. In my research of it, personally attacking another person is NOT free speech. To make sure this stays Internet related, can anyone point me to some "cyber laws" for the United States, please? I want to scare them with all the legal stuff I can before I make it a full harassment lawsuit. From what I've been told, I COULD nab them for harassment (verbal & written) and anything else under the sun. Also, one of them tried to hack my (paid) website. They "kinda" succeeded, but I'm too good for them. I made the login script not allow logins from my account. What kind of punishments are involved for litterally hacking a website? Also, to clearify some things, my password was like gd63s5f2 so it had to be pretty hard to hack. Thanks for any info! It makes me sick when people think the Internet is "law free".[N]FP.S. Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this... it is related to the Internet ("Cyber crime")
  8. Oh boy... so those multimedia devices also known as cell phones aren't enough and we have to move to iPods now?? Cool, heck yeah! Usefulness, absolutely none.[N]F
  9. I don't get this... I've tried every command you guys have given and none of them work!service apache restart gives me: "bash: service: command not found"/etc/init.d/httpd restart gives me: "bash: /etc/init.d/httpd: No such file or directory"/etc/apache/apachectl restart gives me: "/etc/apache/apachectl: No such file or directory"/sbin/service httpd reload gives me: "/sbin/service: No such file or directory"hmm... I don't know... the file structure seems to be normal.var/www contains all of the default documents, etc/apache2 seems to have everything normal. Is there a way I could go about uninstalling Apache and re-installing it?[N]F
  10. thanks for the heads up m^e! *adds to address book*though, I'm not too big on sending passwords via email unless its encrypted... [N]F
  11. I've worked with Apache long enough that I know (or at least I thought I knew) how to restart it. The problem: my terminal is filled with "command not found" and other errors and the such.httpd restart, right? NOPE! Command not found!apachectl restart, NOPE! Command not found!I'm out of ideas! I can't just keep physically re-booting the machine when I need JUST apache to restart! Thanks for any help, my system is Debain 3.1 r1.[N]F
  12. Haha... never seen this. Of couse, I soar above the rest because I went directly for my 30 credits... well, last year when I found Xisto, I did have the starter package, but I did posting and within a few days upgraded. But that is very interesting though...[N]F
  13. I'm a reseller to. The web hosting industry is VERY competitive! Of course, Xisto is the BEST free host and no one can beat them. But yeah, you're going to want a script that works with WHM (I'm assuming you're on a Linux server with it) to create accounts on the server. My main host provides ClientExec (it costs... you will not find free billing software) and a free license so I'm lucky. But I suggest looking into it. I HIGHLY suggest that if you're going to be getting into this industry as a paid host, you'll want to check out and join http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. You'll find that just about every web host has a rep there. I warn you though... It's not like you can just start a host and "get rich quick." I've been promoting (not here of course, I respect Xisto ) within my budget (very little) and I have yet to get a customer. You've been warned. [N]F
  14. It's worth getting a leased license or buy IPB. You get tech support and upgrades and IPB 2.1.4 (this board's version) is actually pretty nice! I'd say go buy it or go with vBulletin... another good one. SMF is a great free one, do NOT go with phpBB... they release a new version on average every 2 months "fixing" security holes when they really add more just don't even concider it. pretend that it doesn't even exist. paid options are the best, but because I'm dirt poor right now, I just use IPB 1.3.1 because I downloaded it back in the old days... lol[N]F
  15. I've got a 3mbps connection but the upload rate is pethetic (35K). I've got the fastest DSL for residential property my phone company offers! It's not bad and I like it! I usually run 2mbps though, but I've hit OVER 3mbps sometimes, but it is just a spike and doesn't last long but it is still enjoyable...I remember when I still had AOL. I'd download at like 1K. Now on my DSL connection, I can download at 320K normally! wooo! lol[N]F
  16. Because Google isn't interested in money like Micro$oft is. Google is a great company and they excel above others in the same industry... Yahoo for example. Gmail isn't basic. If it was basic, then someone else would have already created it. Google has rocket scientists and neurosurgeons working for them so I think great care was put into designing the Gmail service. This was just one little security flaw that got overlooked somehow. One security flaw is better than 100. M$ is already hated because of the terrible job of security on Window$. M$ is more intrested in a GUI than system security so lots of people have posts against the company. I switched over to Linux for this reason, but since not all of my favorite software works in Linux, I'm stuck using both for a long time... M$ wants all the money it can get. Google could actually care less about money. Mr. Page and Mr. Brin started the company as a search engine. The ads were only to keep it running because there are bills to pay. That's how Google operates to this day. [N]F
  17. Hmm... in the terminal I get the following: Package cups is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source. E: Package cups has no installation candidate [N]F
  18. Hmm... I've never used SuSE 10.... then again, I've never used SuSE (or any Linux) on a laptop that used wireless! A good place to search for Linux things is https://www.google.com/linux. I use it at home and school with Linux problems and whenever I need to find something. Of course, it isn't always the best as it just narrows a regular google seach down to "Linux only" items, but good luck! [N]F
  19. OMG, I knew this was going to come! Basically, this is my network:Win Comp + Linux Comp ---> Net Hub ---> Router ---> Win Comp2 ---> WirelessMy printer is attached to Win Comp2 and apparently I need CUPS. Their site has me in circles... I'm confused with what they're saying... I had an easier time getting my video drivers installed, lolThanks for the help![N]F
  20. hmm... I use cjb.net, mostly because they're located close to me lol, so it takes maybe 15 minutes to 1 hour before the DNS works for me. I've never tried uni.cc before. I might just have to try them now! [N]F
  21. lol, yeah. Firefox is on my to-do list. Konqueror isn't on Gmail's "supported browser" list. But there is the Mozilla browser too... but I'll be sure to get Firefox since I use it for all my browsing on my Windows machine[N]FEdit: Ok, I downloaded it, but is there a "proper" place to extract it to? lol, it's the Windows user in me talking... all used to executable installers that put everything where it should be
  22. well, the difference between us Linux users and Mac users is, well... our OS is open source so I'd hope they would be a little more secure, lol Actually, I would think they've got to be right under Windows. I remember the first time I even heard of Linux. It was like two years ago, no joke! I was like, what the heck is that? and here I am today, on Linux! I guess Apple figures that the majority of "hackers" are going to be going after Windows systems since MS is allways announcing new holes before they circulate a patch and get a lot of people updated. At least Apple has the right idea, just not enough programmers to fix the holes. [N]F
  23. I did have it and was testing it. I overwrote it with Debian Linux because Vista requires too much out of systems. Personally, no offense to anyone, I think it is an ADD playground (probably why I was overwhelmed with it, though I haven't been tested for ADD) and is quite buggy. It thought my 100 Mbps network was a 1 Gbps, lol. All that's left are screenshots for a review I'm writing for my website and my school's website. But personally, I didn't like it that much. Other than the intense graphic effect, it was alright. But personally, I'll stick to Windows XP and Debian. [N]F Edit: Oh, btw, it is supposed to be out in late 06 or early 07 to mid 07. And, for the cost, depends on which of the 6 versions you want, (hence the reason why I'm sticking with Linux and WinXP on my other comp)
  24. Guess what?! I don't know what I did different, but I got my graphic drivers installed! Me = VERY happy right now!! I'm so excited that I ran around my house! lolLinux is simply amazing! It puts up a challenge for sure, but you just have to get over the humps and you're on the way! Thanks for all the support! omg... I love this! haha, Konqueror has built in spell checker (or is it a feature of KDE?) and I love it! NEVER again will I have to open up wor... err... OpenOffice.org to do spell check on things! :oWeeeee!!!! Wow! I can't believe I stayed on Windows for so long! I love this Linux world! (a very excited) [N]F
