  1. It's going to be able to find a free host that does all that. Most, even the ones posted like 100webhost have banners and ads. Xisto doesn't, but it doesnt support .mp3's and a few other extensions. One that hasn't been mentioned is: https://byet.host/ But it doesn't seem to be that great. Good luck with your search.
  2. Thanks everyone, that's my problem. I just found an interesting article that basically told me the difference between a HUB/SWITCH/ROUTER. The router assigns IP Addresses to multiple computers based from the 1 IP address given from my ISP. My hub, obviously, can't do that. Here's the article if anyone stumbles across this and needs help explaining: http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Also, I checked into routers and found a cheap router. I assume that the DHCP support is the actual software inside the router that performs the IP manipulation. I found this simple router for $20. Would be sufficient for my situation? http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Overrall I will have a hub as described before NETGEAR 104tp with 4 ports and the above router. These two items would be enough to accomplish what I want to do. I probably will never have more than 3 computers hooked into it. Again thanks for the help.
  3. Thx, the missing piece is obviously the router. I was thinking that a hub/router was the same thing, but what I was really getting at is I thought mine was a combination of the two I guess. The only other question would be, why the need for the 5 port hub? I have a 4 port hub, will this not work? Wouldn't a 4 port hub be enough for 3 computers? The setup is is: ? DSL->HUB->Router->COMPUTER A, COMPUTER BUnless I misunderstood, why wouldn't a 4 port hub work? As I mentioned, I'm basically Network illiterate. Sorry for all the confusion. I guess I just don't understand the difference in a HUB vs Router.
  4. Thank you, it was a very interesting read. Let's start off with a header. I'm not that great at photoshoping much of anything, but I have a basic understanding of how to use a graphics editor. What should the header consist of? For me, it's something that basically describes what the page is going to be about, and some flashy graphics or colors to signify that this is the beginning of the page (top). The graphics should be kept to a minimum size however, and I've noticed a lot of graphics have pieces now days. I think there's two reasons for this. This allows the user to actually see something being produced to the page while the content is loading, which makes them more interested. Secondly it allows your images to be less likely to be stolen or used without your permission.Color choice for a header is something that stands out and has a little stronger than the colors used in the rest of your document. I'm just curious on how you would handle colors. Would you use flashy colors or keep it simple with like no more than 3-5 colors. I am focused on the design aspect, as I have been scripting a lot lately. I starting to feel comfortable with basic scripts, but there's always something out there that confuses me, that's just programming for you. I just wanted to be able to produce a simple website, and make it look nice, hence css. I'm not good @ all with design, so by using a CMS I figured I could control the design and make it a simple yet elegant site without too much effort. As for the footer I was thinking just a horizontal rule or something, then small text signifying the data, and if technical issues contact the webmaster.I dont' know what type of menu I would prefer. The site I'm going to be working on only has a few links and isn't filled with a lot of content. I think that single menu would be sufficient, although if I had more than an admin login in it to add content, I would definately take into consideration of having a hozitonal menu, and a veritcal menu. I think I like the horizontal menu, but it seems harder to implement. I was looking into a drop-down menu, and finally got a vertical menu to work in ie6 and firefox (and i think ie5). I worked with it for hours then followed a tutorial. I understand about 40% of what I did. IE6 presents a lot of errors with CSS, so I see your viewpoint with tables. I would like your thoughts on the header, footer, and menu creation and what types of colors to use. Simple or flashy?
  5. Sorry, but I'm very confused. I first plugged computer A into the router, and it works fine. After going ( in IE ) tools->internet options->connections->settings->properties->advanced. Then I checked the allow others to use network. Only then could computer B have acces to the net. This is where I'm confused. If I did not enable ICS, computer B did not acknowledge the connection. Is there something special I have to do to do this. You talked about simultaneous connections. If I try to connect through computer B while computer A is on, while ICS is disabled I get a busy signal or something like that. This is what I get from the procedure by using ICS. Computer can connect independently. Computer A can connect and computer B acknowledges the connection. Computer B can connect, but computer A does not acknowledge the connection. I'm not too good @ networking, and I'm sorry if I sound noobish, but I'm just plain lost. It seems that I'm going the logical way of doing this. As I said before, computer B did not acknowledge a connection while computer A was connected WHILE ICS WAS DISABLED. If I have to do something in the configuration, I more than likely haven't done it. Is there's something on the router I'm suppose to press?
  6. Thaks for your advice, and if I understood it, I would probably take it lol. Basically I have 2 computers (possibly 3 in the future). Each computer has 1 ethernet card. The dsl modem is external. I then connect the modem to the hub I have. I have a NetGear model EN104tp. http://www.netgear.com/products/details/EN104TP.php <- hub I have no idea what I'm doing, but I know what I want. I want to be able to have any of the 2 (or possibly 3) computers to be able to connect to the internet any time, or have a shared connection from any other the other computers that happens to be connected. So I don't want them to be dependent on 1 computer to get the connection. I have no idea on how to configure stuff, but I can catch on fairly quick if you give me a rundown of what to do. I'd appreciate it, and sorry I didn't specify my layout in the previous post. here's a layout of
  7. Just what we need is someone trying to take more money from us. Thanks for the heads up, I use paypal quite often and I'd probably be fooled into something like this. I usually use it in conjunction with ebay or something but still. Never can be too careful with the $$.
  8. Diablo II was a very addicting game, but I still play Quake 3 a lot. I can't get enough of the rail only mod. Just something I like I guess. I think mainly it's the people I play against and compete with, just like a social hang out. World of Warcraft and Everquest look to be very promising games in the 'addictive' category. I'm just too poor to afford more bills, not only that I don't have enough time in the day. AOE, AOE2, and I'm assuming that AOE 3 are all highly addictive. Strategy games usually are, the good ones anyway. Blizzard make some addicting games including diablo, diablo 2 (as mentioned above), and the entire warcraft series. Starcraft is also a great addictive game. Just so many aspects to the game and there's never a definate outcome. So many games out there.
  9. A quick question about Sharing a DSL question. Let's say I have computer A, and computer B. I can connect to my connection (it's a login/password connection) with computer A. After enabling ICS, computer B shares the internet. Works fine. Now, I disconnect from computer A, and use computer B to connect. Computer B connects fine but does not share with computer A. When trying to enable ICS, i get error # 799 about the IP address. I disconnect from computer B, then reconnect with computer A. I then reconfigure the IP address of computer B from the LAN properties to 192.168.0.2 (instead of 192.168.0.1). Computer A is connected to the net just fine, but obviously with IP changed, computer B does not get the shared connection. After reading into this I came accross this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/238135 A summary (from what I got out of the article) is that I need 2 NIC's. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I gather that this is the only way to accomplish what I want to do. My DSL does also have a USB port, so I suppose I could use that to accomplish this, but before I resort to that I would like to make sure I understand everything correctly. Summary of what I want just in case my story above doesn't clarify: I have 2 computers. I want them to be able to connect independently to the internet through a xDSL connection, but at the same time, I want that connection to be shared to the other computer. P.S. What happens if I throw in Computer C? Would that mean I would have to have 3 NIC's? To all you networking guru's, someone please help me out on this. Please tell me there's a simple fix.
  10. I can hear my desktop whimper at the sound of this notebook. Nice. I'd have to agree with Jeigh. Desktop replacement all the way, but hey wait a minute, you and a few friends want to get together for a lan party (rare these days with broadband like it is, but it still happens), instead of unplugging the monitor and lugging it downstaits and putting it in your trunk. Simply fold it up, put it in your case and off you go. Maybe they'll create a better system for the battery life. I'd be a beta tester for them or something... -.-
  11. I read the thread below on windows themes, and someone mentioned the idea that it could slow your computer by a lot. I was just wondering if anyone has skinned or used a windows xp theme; if so, then how fast does your computer run now as compared to before the theme was applied? Also, is WindowBlinds the better application to use to install XP themes. Just curious, because I am kinda bored of the same ol' XP theme, and some of those themes at deviantart look pretty nice. For linux users: While I'm on topic, how hard is it to install a linux theme? Can someone offer a link to some good linux themes. I'd appreciate some advice.
  12. I know i'm reviving a dead post here, and sorry, but I looked around and found nothing past this point. I did pretty much the same thing, but just included a standard include file, and created functions to display each blocks of html code. This just keeps it simple for me by instead of having a directory full of .inc, .php, or .html files, I can just open that single file to edit the header, footer, and menu. Obviously the content pages displayed in my #MAIN div are seperate .inc files. I was wondering about more of the CSS aspect of it, and ideas on design. I've read many tutorials and examples on css, but when trying to design a menu using a list object, internet explorer just gave me way too many problems. Eventually I used a free css approach for the menu. Anyway, what I was wondering is where do you go from here? I guess more of a template (style) approach for each of the sections. Should they displayed in a table as the example above, or is CSS more effective? Again, sorry to revive this post but I'm very interested in this thread.
  13. Honestly when I was in the lab a lot, I found a nifty little programcalled "Beyond Remote" ( you can get form download.com ) tha allowed me to acces my dorm computer. It's free to use for personal use, but you'll have to license it if you use it for business use I think. Not too sure, but I'd give it a look if I were you. It's simple to operate and worked fine for me.
  14. *BUMP*I am sorry for the double post, but seeing as an admin/mod hasn't responded, I didn' want to re-apply for a space w/o their approval. Should I contact the support staff of Xisto for this problem? If there is no response to this, I will just re-apply for new space as I have built up to 32 credits, and my account did not become active again.
  15. I use a DBI that one of my instructor's introduced me to. I use it for PostgresSQL and/or MySQL. It works fine, and is based (i think) on a standard cgi DBI. I have to admit, it's rather nice to have the consitency and ease of use thru all different database types. I'll give this one a look-over, thanks for the post but maybe a link or something next time.
  16. I just saw this on my gmail account the other day. Somewhere at the top they had a "new feature" or "what's new" or something like that. I clicked it and. KAPLOOEY. The delete button. True that we prob don't need it, but I hardly ever give my gmail out, still it's loaded with spam. So sad. I have like 3 or 4 emails that have been converted to spam-mail accounts. Poor gmail prob has like 20 gigs of spam from all their users. Ah well, it works for me. Good addition with the delete.
  17. There are 2 different types of ways to host a server in quake 3. Dedicated (which means it's purpose is to only host quake 3. Generally people are paid to do this for clans. Then there's obviously not-dedicated, which means the server is being hosted while you play. You will be going for the non-dedicated. If you was a hardcore gamer/clan leader you would want to configure your own server so you could have more uptime for your members. Let's got started with the basic server. In quake 3 (if you don't have it download the demo, it should work the same) simply click multiplayer. Then click create ( to create a server). Choose your map and style of play (Free For All, 1v1, Team...) On the left hand side you will see several "slots". This determines how many people you want to be able to join the server. For instance, there's you and if you want your friend to joing, you would close all slots except one. I'm not too sure what pure server does, but I think it makes it harder to cheat or something. What you're looking for is to make sure is that "dedicated" reads "no". Then click fight. Your server should be up and running. Now in order for your friend to join this server he's going to have to know your ip address. You could download a firefox extension to tell you your ip address or go to "start->run" Type "command" and hit enter, then type ipconfig and hit enter. There is your IP Address. Your friend would then (after knowing the ip address would then launch quake, click multiplayer, click specify, and type in your ip address. Or your friend could hit the tilde key in quake (beside the number 1 key, and below ESC) then type "/connect IPADDRESS_GOES_HERE" There are several ways of creating a server, and this isn't the most efficient, nor most effective way. I'll leave this link to kinda guide you in the right direction if you want to launch a server through a configuration file. http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ One particular part of this article would be This is a dedicated server being launched, but why couldn't you changed dedicated to 0, or just leave it out complete (it should default to 0)
  18. Google's really making a name for theirselves. Before google i use to use astavista.com to search the web. Lately, out of habit I typed it in and *POW* not there anymore. Just craziness I tell you. I think yahoo bought into astavista or owned it or something, but google's a major competitor out there now. Any company that's any company has a place in the google pages. Gmail is great, and that extension, although it's not from google, is nice to have an emulated drive. Now this. This sounds pretty nifty. Thanks for the news, I had no idea. I'll check into it.
  19. Do a quick google on "gmail virtual drive" and you'll find the extension. There is such a thing but the last one I had wouldn't work anymore. Gmail I think keeps blocking it, but from what I hear the guy keeps updating it and has a workaround in a few days. If anyone knows where to find the latest version post a link.
  20. A lot of games support TCP/IP. If you host a server tho you can just make it pass protected so it's limited to just you guys. I would just find a site dedicated to the game that you want to play and briefly read thru a readme.txt. You should find the answers your looking for. Hosting servers or TCP/IP would be your answer tho. Gl to you. I would recommend starting with a FPS like quake 3. Good fun.
  21. lol agreed, it does look just like a rip-off of firefox. They'll do something, just like what they did with netscape. IE isn't bad, but after awhile I noticed how buggy it gets. I can't even go to gmail with IE. The plugins in firefox just rock. maybe we'll see more in-depth uses for IE rather than just the appearance.
  22. My friends and I use to play D&D and Marvel comic rpgs. We didn't really go by the rules because there were only like 3 or 4 of us that really played it, but we were pretty close. It's pretty funny to think about it now, but back then it wasn't half-bad. Now if we had a real dungeon master that knew the rules (we did have references but they were complicated o.O) then I'd still consider playing. Just not enough time in the day.
  23. Pokemon, gotta catch em all! Lol, great stuff. I was into pokemon for a little while. I mean comeon, everyone was. I don't play it anymore tho, I got bored of it pretty quick, considering you pretty much do the same thing in red, blue..and all the other pokemon games there are out there. I played a couple of them and they weren't bad at all. I'm still surprised they are still putting out the games tho. I figured their sells had hit bottom. A guy I work with started collecting the pokemon cards for his kids and he has almost every card, lol.
  24. Again, thanks for the reply. I am aware that one post is not a static number of credits. It is worth the content within the post, even then it gets looked at by an admin/mod then your credits can be adjusted accordingly. I was just saying that approximately 1 post per day can keep you active fairly well. Probably a post every 3 days or so could actually keep your account active.
  25. Obviously they were both very lonely and in need of a friend. o.O One day they'll turn. The snake will try to impress some girl snake and that'll be the end of mr. hairball.
