  1. If someone could invent a free Voice-over-IP thing which lets you connect to people on landlines and mobiles for free (in the UK) that would be the greatest invention of all time ever. I hope google does this for good and not for money.
  2. The most likely thing that could be a problem is the permissions. There is a little message in the control panel of invision which says that you have to change the permissions to 777, which can be done easily in both FTP and in cPanel, and after you've done this you won't get any error in invision any more.
  3. It's umm....interesting but I don't think it's practical enough for anyone to really consider it. People that want to buy this kind of product will probably not want to bother going out and buying another monitor and another keyboard just to save a few dollars. The audience is a bit confused and I think if apple made a screen + keyboard for this then it'd sell much better.
  4. The odd popup won't bother me really, Firefox's is sufficiant. The thing that worries me is that maybe this website was set up by evil advertising companies that want to find out how they can deliver adverts to you ahead of the popup blockers can block them out.
  5. I would love to have a go at this but I don't think I'm brave enough to risk f***ing up my my iPod at this present time. Has anyone on this forums used this iPod Linux thing and successfully? Does it run well and is it backwards compatable with everything currently on the iPod?
  6. Wow that's actually really good value. I have a value-for-pixels camera too. It's called KODAK Easyshare CX7530 which has 5 million pixels and 4x optical zoom, which is in my opinion a very underrated feautre of a camera. It is around 250-300 dollars and that is very very cheap for a 5 million pixels camera.
  7. Flightgear is a wonderful little program, it does take a while to load (i didn't know how to use it until i read up) but it is possibly the most brilliant idea for an open source software ever. I recommend this to everyone using Linux or Windows XP, as you'll have hours of fun with such a simple, open-source program.
  8. You should definitely put Linux in your poll. We have that at school, it runs awfully, but this is mostly because they run it on the worst servers ever (since we have no money). I do love the idea of Linux, but for usability at this present moment Windows still beats it out, but in a few years I'm sure, with programs like Openoffice, the GIMP, etc. that Linux will rise to equal Windows in every way.
  9. http://www.dot.tk/en/index.html?lang=en isn't a real domain, all it does is redirect your page from the virtual domain. If you want cheap domains just try http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ adsense is popular becuase it is made by google (a company we all know and love) and because they are clean and people often mistake them for parts of the website (thus generating revenue). I persononally don't have them (because my website is non-profit), but if you want to use adverts they are probably the best way to go.
  10. My favourite movie is Hero with Jet Li and Zhang Zi Yi. It's a very powerful movie about a man who is out to kill and emperor, and has dedicated his entire life to prepare for that one single moment, ever since he was orphaned, but in the end realises that for the good of the country is different than for his personal pride. A very moving and brilliant film.
  11. Digitalising is always a good thing, because it gives more choice, and choice gives people hapiness. Google has always been a revolutioniser and so far it has had a great deal fo success. Lots of out of copyright books are just collecting dust in pubilic libraries and there is a lot of potential on the internet for it to reach new audiences.Apart from that of course, every day as a whole the population is getting lazier and this will mean one less thing you have to get up to do.
  12. I know this mod comes intergrated into vBulltin and it's a very clever way to increase user participation, and for this reason it's definately a good thing. I am still trying to find one for my Invision Power Board version 1.3.1 and I'm sure the one here will help increase user participation.
  13. Question: Is the Invision Power Board version 1.3.1 that is included in the Fantastico package at Xisto a limited trial or is it the full version that used to be free (?). If so is it possible to convert it to phpBB2 without losing any user data and settings? Thanks for reading.
  14. Same question from me, and I wanted google adverts on my website, but they said that because it reqired a log in to access it, they would not permit advertisements. I am not sure why this is, and I am reapplying for Google Adsense after my site has been finished and uploaded, when I hope they will accept, because at the end of the day they are a trusted company and they pay a lot of money.
  15. Actually now I am promised to get an 80GB External Hard Drive for Christmas It's very exciting since I way over-use my computer (storing DVDs rips etc) and now it means I won't have to delete things as I can just store them on the external hard disc.
  16. Recently discovered Peer2Mail. Do a google search on it, it's very clever and it takes advantage of the new compnaies offering 1GB mail to their clients. It splits up the files into 10MB chunks and lets you send them to each other by mail at fast speeds.
  17. You could use the download manager that comes with Firefox, which is very reliableDitto For OperaORFreshdownload - very simple to use and effective download managerFlashget - Very popular, haven't tried it myselfFree Download Manger - what I use, tons of features for free, and wonderful site crawlers.
  18. Also http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ using your ftp settings that were proveded for youuse Upload Files to use their net interface.
  19. The quick way would just be to use an add-on domain from cpanel, but you should ask for a DNS change from Opaque, and from then on all you have to do is point the nameservers.
  20. Embarssingly I learned HTML many many years ago from a children's website called Neopets (http://www.neopets.com/) whom have an incredibly simple and effective way of teaching HTML, in categories. I've actually recommended that website to many people simply for learning HTML with. The bright colours and flashing images honestly help you learn HTML!
  21. I disagree about phpBB being easy to install mods in. There are definatley more modifications for the software phpBB than for any other software (e.g. Invision or vBulletin) but nevertheless they are probably more difficult to install. Also phpBB is overall harder to use that Invision Power Board.
  22. To be honest I really dislike the console gaming indstry. They charge a ridiculous amount of money for sometimes very poor upgrades. They bring out new consoles very often so that you have to spend a lot of money on them. I was planning to get a console, but by doing some calculations I realised that the cost of maintaining one would just be too much money for me.
  23. I think overall Firefox is the most popular out of all the alternative browsers but in my opinion it is definately not the best. Opera browser has many more features (yes don't lecture me about firefox plugins) that come WITH the browser and it is immensely easy to manipulate the buttons and toolbars to suit your needs and preferences.
  24. Thank you very much. I will try that now and tell you how it goes.[edit - sorry I need help again I don't know how to tell if a php file is using a mysql process and also I can't seem to edit the mysQL database inside the control panel of invision or the Cpanel that comes with Xisto ]
  25. yep we love Opera, voted browser of the year 2004 by one of the PC Magazines (I forget which). Opera is very nice looking and has a very versatile interface that can be changed to suit your preferences. The tabbing system is so fluid and can be changed and manipulated easily, unlike in Firefox where it is more rigid and ugly looking (sorry firefox lovers)
