Thanks quijibow, but here's the thing. The resolution all of a sudden became extremely weird, and I was having to move the screen twice as much as the original size in every direction to view everything, so I went into the monitor settings, changed it, and my monitor decided that it was 'invalid' and since I couldn't get into linux any more as it blanked out every time I loaded it, I decided to reinstall linux. So I went into Windows, and into Partition Magic, and deleted the Linux partitions. BUT, even though I did that, when the PC boots, there is still the message which asks whether I want linux or windows, which I don't want since I already got rid of Linux. Furthermore, when I put the Mandrake CD1 in (which I think is probably corrupt since I did no checks on it whatsoever ), there is a message which says Uncompress second stage change ramdisk error, check linux kernal problem (?) or something like that. This is NOT going well .Well I have promised myself to use Linux, since I hate Windows with the bottom my heart, and I can barely use Notepad without it crashing, so I WILL perservere with this. Please please please help!

By the way, I'm using KDE

OK, I really desperately need help now. I downloaded and installed all the disks of Mandrake 10.1. That was all fine. Now, I can't drag windows. When a window is open there isn't a bar at the top (like in windows) which lets me drag it, and have the minimise, maximise and X buttons in the top right hand corner. This is a pain.Secondly, whenever there is an input field, it won't let me type into it, for this reason, I have come back into my Windows boot to ask for help since I can't type in my internet connection settings into the input field Thanks very much for your help.

Vinyl doesn't last long, it's very very very difficult to carry with you and there is just no need for it in this world.

Convert Now! Why you should give up on MP3s
musichere replied to tattoopunk's topic in General Discussion
CDs are designed perfectly so they are comfortable to hold and big enough so they can't be stolen from shops. Vinyl is hard to steal from shops, but they are a tiny bit too big to fit in your bag and a tiny bit too big to buy a portable player for -

I think Firefox is the best open source introduction for n00bs, it's the ultimate user experience with the plugin and theme compatability and compared to Internet Explorer it's like a haven.

Firefox not only has zillions more features than Internet Explorer, the key is sercurity, and you won't get any installing spyware using it. Also it crashes a hell of a lot less than any other browser so I don't think you can really complain about that.

Sorry to sound stupid again, but what is the difference between KDE and GNOME, which one is the one that comes with Mandrake Linux, and which one is better?

The Beatles are the greatest band of all time without question, that is not an opinion, they have all the record sales, public opinion, and general music industry consensus.I have all the Beatles albums, I absolutely adore them and they are fantastic. My favourite album is Revolver, which has the songs Here, There and Everywhere, Elenor Rigby and Tomorrow Never Knows, all of which are abosltuly fantastic. I hope the new generations really appreciate how great the Beatles are.

Exeem Public Beta Out ! eXeem is finaly released
musichere replied to cryptonx's topic in Science and Technology
Ahh I feel really bad for eXeem, beuacse it's a sellout and it's changed from a nice website for people who want to download and share torrents, but now there are spyware and adverts all over it, and there are now better alternatives for everyone to use, for example eMule, which has millions more files which are mostly better served. -
My favourite films are:1. The Pianist2. Hero (Ying Xiong)3. A Beautiful Mind4. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (Wo Hu Cang Long)...Can't think of any more at the moment, but there are loads of great films out there that are very special.

Greenhouse Effect Is this the so called final countdown?
musichere replied to hast-webben's topic in Science and Technology
We normally only hear one side of the story about the global warming effect, but to be honest, the oceans should absorb any excess CO2, since that's what happened zillions of years ago. So why should they stop doing this? Maybe the current increases in temperature are just anomalies and we are all overreacting to something that could just be a natural cycle and being absorbed by the oceans. -
Midi sounds dreadful, but at least the downloads are instant. I wish there were decent to good download databases of mp3 avaliable on the internet, since classical files are out of copyright, people should take advantage of this and put them on the internet for people to download, but for some reason, nobody can be bothered to.

What Are You Listing To Right Now? what huh what ... lol
musichere replied to Bird Man's topic in General Discussion
At the moment I am listning to Ani Difranco's album from 1994, Not A Pretty Girl, which is an angry spat at the world, it's a very moving and special album, it's a bit depressing and gloomy at times but the quality is really up there with anything else of the 1990s. -
Tips For Slim Health And Long Life Dos and Donts of Healthy life.
musichere replied to OpaQue's topic in General Discussion
I have a few to add, Don't get too excited when you find that when you go to weigh yourself that you are a few pounds lighter, as it is likely that lots of this could be because of loss of water, or simply not reading the scales properly, or worst of all, the fact that muscle weighs more than fat, and that by not eating enough protien and doing the regular exercises you are reducing the volume of muscle and increasing the volume of fat (which would cause you to lose weight net (overall)). -
I think we should keep this thread, it's interesting to debate these myths I'm not sure I agree with you, the ab machines (not the tacky ones) do actually work your abdominals as if you were doing crunches, and you wouldn't be able to do 400 crunches in 10 minues on your own, and I used one of those for a month and I got some great results. I don't use one any more beucase they take ages to put on and aren't the most comfortable thing in the world, plus I got some minor burns in my stomach area , well I can disregard those becuase everything positive has to have it's negatives too.

History Of Music Find out how music was born.
musichere replied to avalon1405241471's topic in General Discussion
Obviously this would take forever, since time lasts forever, and music is universal, but I would start with medieval (otherwise it would take way too long), and with the wooden instruments that they used, basic forms of what we now call Piano, Violin, Clarinet etc. but carved from wood. They played tunes in plain keys (dorian mode etc.) and songs like Greensleves came from this period. Then as technology developed, the baroque period, with Bach, Handel, Scarlatti etc. and the use of Harpsichord primarily, and more modern instruments like Oboe, Trumpet, Recorder, and thus the more complicated melodies and inventions.Classical began the Piano and the biggest bulk of music comes from here led by Beethoven, Mozard, Hayden, Schubert, from whole-scale symphonies to concertos and sonatas.Romantic was the development of the complex tones and tonalities of music, as well as technology in using the pedal in Piano music and greater use of the acoustics of this instrument. Tchaikovski, Mendelsson, Chopin used instrument acoustics brilliantly.Modern came about as people got bored of classical tones, and things like tone-row and modern styles, dischords, use of new technology, electronic technology etc.Anyway I hope that has been a little useful, but could you be more specific of the exact critera, as such a topic is very vague and could be of reference to anything. -
If I write something and write © http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ does that mean I own the copyright, even though in case someone else uses it and claims it to be theirs, that I can do absolutely nothing about it (?). Could I threaten legal action though? Even though I don't have a registered copyright (which costs $40)?

Also it's a good idea to use cameras which use AA or AAA batteries because often when you're on the road in a place where you're not going to be able to charge your battery pack, so it's much more efficient and convenient to buy a camera which uses batteries directly, although they die quickly unless you buy good quality rechargable ones.

If I do eventually want to switch over completely ( God forbid), can I drag and drop all my files (sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but I am a stupid person). Also what P2P applications run in Linux?

I have thought about this for a while now, and I am going to officially try Linux on my own home PC for the first time .I have to admit, I am VERY scared and I hope it goes OK. I have chosen Mandrake and at the weekend I will install it onto a partition. I have a few questions. Can you use iTunes and iPod on Linux, can you use iPod period? Is it safe without anti-virus software? If the installation goes wrong, what will happen to my Windows partition?
