  1. By using bittorrent do you mean using a downoad manager like Flashget which splits up your large download file into many 'bits' rather than downloading it in order?I'm not sure how you can downoad a common download using bittorrent.
  2. We all know that all the so called 'celebrities' that Paris Hilton has on her phone book have already changed their telephone number so there is no point in this list whatsoever.
  3. I think AVG is by far good enough for any user at all. I think Norton has a more professional look and feel (interface), but in reality, it's slow and bulky, and runs far too many system processes that I don't like at all.AVG is FREE and works very fast and takes up much much less systemm resources than any of the major paid ones.So in conclusion use AVG for quality without any of the pricetag.
  4. Can someone summarise the main advantages of Ubuntu ahead of Debian (which seems similar)? Thanks.
  5. That's unfair becuase if you think about it, since they recieve lots of donations, and CDs cost about ÂŁ1 shipped, it's actually not much money. If you don't believe it's any good just download the ISO and have a try, or even better, order the CD from their official website.
  6. I know I am probably the last person you want to hear linux advice from, but if you want software/hardware support and compatibility, the way to go is http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ is an absolutely free people-power distriburtion and has the most packages of any distribution.Haven't tried it myself but it's supposed to be very solid.
  7. Tiscali: WORST ISP EVERThey were supposed to upgrade my line to 1mbit in JANUARY but they still haven't and now it's more like dialup than anything else with the 512 adsl line going at about 5kb/s download rate.
  8. I am downloding Ubuntu, but judging by the front screen it seems like a total retard OS , so I guess that's perfect for me.
  9. Thanks for all your help. I ran the test 3 times without errors.I will try Ubuntu, but I still wish there was a way to get Mandrake.
  10. I think I know what the problem is now, It crashes on this blue screen and then gives the 'fatal error' screen (in last post). Then it gives the following message.
  11. Knoppix is fine, the computer is only 1 year old and the drive has no problems whatsoever. I actually got this disk in a shop and they do thorough tests on every disk, and by looking at it there are no scratches at all. How do you change the kernal?
  12. I reinstalled Windows and now I want Linux again, but there are yet more problems Can you explain these screens I get when trying to install Linux?
  13. You can get very cheap domains for http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ £1.99!!! ($4)
  14. Update:OK the LILO is no longer a problem; I just repaired it using the mandrake CD. Only the eth1 FAILED part and then the ppp0 hanging up and not doing anything for 10 minutes (you can't hear anything from the processor either) is hanging it up.
  15. That's why I always wait for you before doing anything I have a USB ADSL modem. I fiddled around with some internet settings (in mandrake) but I think they were wrong. USb Broadband There is no graphical desktop problem. that is all fine, it's just that when I boot the Mandrake CD, instead of the default graphic INSTALLATION mode, it goes to a DOs mode which has much less features and is harder to use than the normal Mandrake installation mode. no I'm not sure of the differences between those two but I'll try out Grub since Lilo is being a pain for me. Thanks again
  16. The thing is, I can't get it to use the graphical installation. I don't know how to change bootloader.
  17. OK I posted some wrong information in my other post. Here are the screenshots i'm talking about. I can only boot to Windows through using the XP disk every time. I'm thinking of reinstalling both Windows and Linux. I'll try the thing you said quijibow. Thanks again for helping this Linux dumbarse.
  18. I've already installed linux twice now, I think it's not a good idea to do it again, also quijibow said it's bad for the computer to keep reinstalling the OS. Is there absolutely no way to fix it? Also I still can't ge tthe Mandrake graphical installation to work properly.
  19. Okay, my saga continues I bought a new 160 GB Hard Drive and installed that. Then I installed Linux on one of the 80GB partitions. Then that was all going fine, but on the opening sequence there is a PPPoE Failed, OOOpe Failed (or something like that)It crashes during the searching for PPPoE now.Why does it load this wierd sequence of checks every time I load linux? is there a way to prevent this? Also sometimes when I boot the computer it goes L 0707070707070707070707070707070707070707707070707070What on earth is that?!?!??!
  20. I assume it won't make Windows avoid crashing for me during use of programs such as Azureus, Firefox, Internet Exporer and even Notepad
  21. Hi everyone!I used your guide to removing the dual-boot and it worked great, thanks ever so much again !I think one of the reasons my last Mandrake installation went wrong was becuase it didn't load the graphical interface for some reason. I know this is a Mandrake Linux specific question but I was wondering if you know why it loaded it as a DOS mode (or whatever it's called) rather than graphical mode. Thanks
  22. Answer me honestly, did you buy it or did you download it? Either way, read the .nfo file which came with your download and it'll tell you how to change it into English.
  23. Thanks for that. I have ordered a 160GB hard drive from ebay, and a Official Linux Mandrake 10.1 DVD, that should solve the problem. Now all I want to do is get rid of all trace of linux from this hard drive and keep it to Windows only. I'm still not sure how to use the MBR thing. Is there a guide anywhere? Thanks
  24. Linux can be made to look like anything, it's the basic skin they're talking about in KDE or GNOME I guess. Then again Windows can be made to look like anything too.
