  1. The simple answer....Each Disk has only ONE Master boot Record (MBR) and then has one Boot sector for each partition.Normally, GRUB is installed to the MBR.Grub can then load linux, or chainload the windows boot loader on the windows partiton Boot Sector.SOOO....If you have 2 hard disks...Install Gub to the MBR of the one disk, And GoBackk to the MBR of the windows disk, then set the bios to boot the linux disk first.Grub can then load linux, or chainload GoBack from the other disks MRB, which can then Chainload Windows booter from the boot sector. If you have one disk...You will need to have GoBack on the MBR, and install grub to a partiton boot sector.then configure GoBack to boot windows. or chainload Grub from the partition Boot sector.I know all this talk of MBR's and Boot sectors sounds confusing, but its actually quite simple.I can provide all the help you need configureing and installing GRUB, but you will have to figure out GoBack by yourself.Basically, you just need to learn how to chainload in the correct order
  2. i think you are right xbox....Its just sooo frustrating not being ably to boot a rescue disk, chroot, and re-compile whatever became corrupted in windows.Everything about the indows install bugs me.Last time i installed windows, the timer said that it would be complete in 2 hours.2 hours later, i came back to the computer, to find that it had paused installation 15 minutes into it, to ask me what time it was, LOL.ALL install questions should be asked in one go, so that it doesnt need to be babysat.lol, ohh well, anuther afternoon wasted.
  3. didnt help...so the question is this>what could cause the error message "autochk not found" when the file autochk.exe DOES exist, and it is in th corrcet place.. ???any why of why would it cause a BSOD ?where does windows set the PATH env variable ? could that have become corrupt ?my system is virusfree, auto updates turned off.no new software or devices installed.USELESSSSSS !!!!windowsXP install disk insits on neuking my MBR.. so not only do i have to re-install windows, i have to make a linux 64bit boot disk to fix the MBR afterwards.agh !
  4. WINE's support for DirectX is very inferior to Cedega's support for directX (currently supports directX 9b)however, my subscription to Cedega ran out, and a recent Steam update requires a cedega update, without my subscription, i nolonger have access to the FTP servers.now if we can get back to the problem, rather than asking why i want my problem sorted, LOL...i returned the boot sctor to its origonal state, made no change. Thanks for the download wutske, ive not tried it yet, but thanks anyways. If you guys knew me aswell as the guys at developerfusion, you would know its a miracle ive not filled this thread with rants, hehe.again, thanks.
  5. ive found the autochk.exe program. it does exist... maybe it is corrupt ??? chris@localhost /mnt/windows/windows/system32 $ md5sum `find /mnt/windows/ | grep autochk.exe`ae06f7bb251869edbc9f50a36949a2e3 /mnt/windows/windows/system32/dllcache/autochk.exeae06f7bb251869edbc9f50a36949a2e3 /mnt/windows/windows/system32/autochk.exe if anyone else here has the facilities, could you please md5sum your autockh.exe files, so i can compare for corruption. thanks.
  6. CPU : AMD Athlon64 3400+ 2.4Ghz clock, 400Mhz FSB RAM : 2 * Kingston 512mb dual sided ValueRam PC3200 DDR400 Motherboard : ASUS K8 Graphics : Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 LE 128meg Disk: 80Gb Tripple boot system, WindowsXP on partiton1 FreeBSD 6 on partiton2 Gentoo Linux on partiton3 /boot on partition4 /home on partiton5 swap on partiton6 I only use WindowsXP for Soul Reaver Defiance, and Half-Life games. today, it refuses to boot. after the loading screen, a blue screen is presented with the mesage then a second or two later, the BSOD (Blue Screen of death) Fatal error at <hexidecimal memory address> <hexidecimal memory address>,<hexidecimal memory address> what went wrong ? ive changed, and installed nothing. just play a few hours of games a week. and how do i fix this ??? and PLEASE dont tell me to re-install windows. lol. the filesystem is VFAT, so i have full access to it under gentoo linux. thanks. (trying soo hard not to start ranting about MS, lol) EDIT: i fscked the windows partiton, and found boot sector irregularities. is this a known bug ??? does windows update its boot sector without also updating the on filesystem backup ??? if not, then what could have changed my windows boot sector ??? considering restoring the boot sector.
  7. it Almost works in Gaim (maybe ill try kopete later) It could be a very usefull tool ! have you ever heard of the turing test ? It was a proposed test convieved by Alan Tureing *father of modern computing* in which both a human, and AI computer try to convince a judge that they are human, by holding a conversation on a specialised topic, for example discussing shakespear.
  8. luckily then, you only need to endure the installer once, and after 10 minutes, the nightmares over. But seriously... you wont find a more simple installer than Ubuntu.if you really like horror stories, take a look at the Linux From Scratch installer
  9. I bough a £50 stick mp3 player.. it broke after 6 months, one of the push buttons wore out (it was stick on maximum volume)the shop had soped selling that mp3 player, so replaced it with a differant one of the same price, 6 months later, that stopped working. it doesnt even turn on, and as before linux kernel saw the device as a "USB *bottom* storeage device" it now sees it as a "IRQ ERROR, Usb device refuces to accept IRQ-7,8,9,10 etc etcv address"So although i agree the ipdo is a little Over the top....i've learned that brand names can be important for quality.ALSO, Ths ipod integration with programs like Amarok is very cool, woo Linux.I actually prefere Amarok to iTunes.
  10. when i read this i thought it was a joke... (it is isnt it ?) Like a librarian who orders books in category and in alphabetical order? Organising information will HELP people get information. whats wrong with that ! sounds like the media trying to make news sound more important than it really is. he didnt *defect*, he left his job at MS and took a new job at google. To me, it looks like a wired reporter was having a slow news month and neeed to fill half a page.
  11. This was an accident. Its near impossabl to have an idea and know if someone else had that idea before (intelectual property) however stealing Open source source code is a very deliberate act. Plus, who actually repects IP anyways. thanks to IP, you can be sued for publishing somthing yuo wrote yourself.
  12. the fix http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ aparently, the powersupply is overheating, and the voltages falling outside of tolerance. the unOFFIICIAL fix is ot have your power supply dangleing from a piece of string. good ol slashdot
  13. have a look at the PDA section over at linuxquestions.org there are alot of guys there who answered alot of questions for me about PDA's Or better yet, join the familiar mailing list, or possably have a chat to someone on the IRC channel. Familiar is an embedded linux distro specifically designed for that
  14. This picture could be made by some child who has a mars-bar.. a pint of water.. and the hand eye coordination of a 5yr old, without using existing images from Mars. LOL. Const... You have just turned this slightly amusing topic into something really worth reading, Thanks !! Welcome to Xisto ! keep up the funny stuff
  15. I run a FreeBSD + GNU/Linux system.. need i say more.I dont see why anyone would purposly lock themselves into MS only platforms. However, i do remember the halfLife hads, where in the advanced graphics options you had a choise of "Sotfware, OpenGL or DirectX"Have you guys ever played UT200X on both windows and Linux platforms ?in windows, the game runs DirectX, in Linux it uns OpenGL.the graphics look exactly the same.there's a sligh performance boost under linux.. but its hardly a fair test, as im running 64bit gentoo on a Amd64 machine, vs 32bit windows.Back on track.... The performance and quality of OpenGL and DirectX are almost identicle, but openGL has the added bonus of portability.if MS made directX Open.. or atleast portable.. then it would be a very difficult decision.HOWEVER... the Cedega team have done well creating a compatability layer to run directX on Unix / Linux. Maybe one day they will manage to write a native DirectX kernel driver??dont hold your breath.... but anythigns possable.
  16. The search is FINALLY OVER ! In the end, they didnt even need to spend billions on those sillly little robots. http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap050401.html
  17. My university was very strict about formats you used to hand in assignments. They prefered you to hand in your document as PDF. (but plain text / openOffice was tolerated)Once a first year student was publically flogged foe using MS .doc
  18. Microsof NTt used part of the FreeBSD kernel to handle Tcp/IP (for non techies, the protocol used for almost all of internet communication) FreeBSD i licenced under the BSD licence, so it is completely Legal to use the code for anything, even in non Open source projects like Windows, however, credit MUST be given to the origoonal author. (Microsoft didnt give credit, and denied using BSD source code) It was the denial that was againsed the licence, not using it. which i think is quite funny. quote sources' http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2001/6/19/05641/7357 http://www.wsj.com/europe
  19. Have you looked at some of the cool things people do with gumstix ??one project added the device to a wether baloon.the gumstix was connected to a GPS , a mobile phone, and two camera's.It was programmed to take a photo every 30 seconds, and when it langed, it sent its full locaction back to the owner in a test message !!!!!!it traveleed 60 miles, and went 20 thousand meters high !!!!!On some of the phtographs, it looks like you are on the verge of space, below the horizon is blue sky... above the horizon is black.. where there is little or no atmosphere to refract runlight !!!One guy used it to make a bluTooth sniper riffle.Allows you to access bluetooth devicees upto a mile away using a sniperrifle scope, and directional anetnna. And one of my favorite...Someone wired up the device to a web-cam.and made a robotic arm holding a soft-air bb-gunthat automatically fires at anything that moves infront of it.like a centinal gun from HalfLife.Alot of people aso cluter them together to make high powered compiling enviromnets.Personally, i think im going to buy 2.One will be a web-server / portable proxy to the tor-ntwork.so anythwhere i go, i can add the thing ot the network, set it up as a proxy, and be annonymous on any machine i find..(cool hacker toy, lol)
  20. although the amd64 can run 32bit and 64bit code simultaniusly, you cannot make a program half-32 and half-64. a program has to be fully 32, or fully 64. drivers run in kernel space. which is why 32bit drivers will not work in a 64bit kernel.
  21. Yordan.....There are still some 16bit applications on windowsXP. ( and 32bit CPU's have been dominant on desktops for decades now)x86_64 is an extension of x86.my amd64 runs 16, 32 and 64bit code simultaniusly just fine.and like the main selling point of the Amd64 says.Just make sure you STICK WITH 32bit windows... 64bit windows is useless.you wont be able to take full advantage of the 64bit hardware untill windows develops a true 64bit OS... (unless you plan on playing around with BSD / Unuix / Linux)1 have a Amd64 3400+ with one gig of ram.Even half-life 2 doesnt need all the power i have.save your money and only buy 1 gig of ram, keep a DIMM slot free for an upgrade if you still have the machine in 3 years.
  22. For all you laszy readers, if you get bored of the following over excited computer nerd jukie ravings of a description.. please skip to the end where you can view lots of fun piccys and video's of variosue cool robots and things. Ive just found the gumstix computer, and im hooked. I NEED ONE !!! the gumstix itself is a small board the size and shape of a large(ish)_ stick of chewing gum (8cm long) the board itself has...... 1) 400 Mhz CPU 2) 16 megs of flash memory 3) Bluetooth 4) two expansion boards. using the expansion boards you can add... *) upto wired ethernet network cards *) a MMC card reader *) wireless ethernet *) Usb client *) Usb Host *) 2 serial ports *)a breakout board. The breatout board is simply a cirtuit board that gives access to the main bus tracks. the breakout board can be used to make your own addons.. OR to access more featuress of the chip.. *** THE CHIP ON THE GUMSTIKS HAS AN INBUILT TFT / LCD MONITOR CONTROLLER !!!!!!!!! *** best of all, the expansion boards attach to each other in a sandwich design (like lots of chewing gum sticks in the packet) And thats not the half of it... THE BEST FEATURE.... THE FEATURE THAT ROCKS THE HARDEST.... Is the board fully 100% supported by Linux 2.6.X... ohhhh yes ! The website will not only sell you the hardware, but has a free gcc based Cross compiler. and it has somthing called a *builtroot* which is very very very similar to freeBSD ports and GENTOO PORTAGE !!!!!! you built the software you want on your computer, then download the programs onto the gumstix and run them ! even program your own software and drivers. okay... video time.... http://www.gumstix.org/ download the piccy of the fish, it acts exactly like a real fish, watch it swim.. its amasing. Also, have a look at the first first flying webserver !!!!! thanks to anti-hotlinking, to see the board you will need ot go here, and click the camera icon half way down the page to see the board. https://www.gumstix.com/ and some sexy sexy addons.... https://www.gumstix.com/ I just need one of these... the question is.. what to do with it ??? My First idea was to use it as an insanely low powered, always on web server. then i kept adding to it untill i had designed a full laptop with serial / bluetooth keyboard and everything. maybe ill read up on the robotics addon.... after i can scrape some cash together, maybe ill be posting here using a tangled ball of wires nailed to a plank of wood ???
  23. really ? How do they manage that ? is that even legal ? sorry for the offtopic.
  24. Linux from scratch leaves you with a bootable linux OS and a full set of development tools. bascially, all your basic bash commands, and a compiler. This took me 2 solid days on a 1.2Ghz Athlon Thunderbird. he whole of the linux from scratch is equivelent to a gentoo @emerge system@ (forgive me, im on a windows machine, and the keyborad is set to american... no speach marks) Its a good learning experiance, but it gets repetative. you spend half the time readinf explanations of why you need to do each step, and typing... wget files and patchestar -zxf blahgzcat patch.diff.gz | patch -P0./configre --prefix=/usr <and other random options >makemake install the *FUN* doesnt start untill you more onto the other books, like BeyondLinuxFrom scratch, which helps you build things like Xorg.
  25. Its amasing, but this thing seems to happen all the time in the Linux forum.A question is asked, but instead of beeing answered, they get an alien surgestion."Q: How do i create a new distro ?""A: Use Ubuntu""Q: Does Linux support brand X wireless network""A: I dont Know, use Ubuntu""Q: Whats the capital of Scotland?""A: Ubuntu"Lol. If only this site had a humour section.Seriously though.....Go for Linux From Scratch, or google for "Meta Distribution"a Meta Distribution is a bit like a distro used for creating s custom distro ( gentoo yipee )
